A break-through volume, or maybe it is a two-volume highlight of the series, possibly a kind of turning point. The Manbagi/Komi/Tadano triangle has been a known thing but unaddressed, until this volume, #17 (!?), where an unusual thing happens (spoiler alert!!!): Komi and Manbagi finally communicate to each other about their mutual attraction to Tadano, and they agree to commit to their friendship in spite of whatever happens. Yep, rather than fight with each other in jealous rage, they agree to support each other regardless of what happens.

Whatever else happens in this volume, any typical joking around, it's all in the background as this is a key occurrence. And note: Komi is communicating, and not on paper, with Manbagi. Now Tadano, who dresses as a girl for the play because Komi is talking to Manbagi, remains largely sweetly clueless about what is going on. No one is talking to him. And technically he has two separate culture festival "dates" with Komi and Manbagi, and doesn't even seem to realize it! And yet another girl who plays opposite him may also be falling for him! I say all clueless nice guys (like me and my sons, I am thinking, guys that as teenagers freeze up around girls) have Tadano as someone to cheer on.

OMG!!! Komi communicates.

Back in my review for Vol. 10, I wrote,"After an onslaught of new characters who haven't contributed much of anything to the story, Komi's newest friend, Rumiko Manbagi, has an interesting personality and problems and could actually upset the status quo if a little crush hinted at continues to develop. Promising."

Promise comes to fruition in a manner beyond my best expectations, and it finally accelerates the glacially slow progress that has been made since this whole thing kicked off two-and-a-half years ago.

I generally don't linger on books, but I have reread pages of this volume numerous times in the last week. Writing this review has taken forever because I keep picking up the book and reading large sections of it between every sentence.

It's the dad in me, sure, but I just feel so proud of Komi's progress and so much protectiveness for her friend Rumiko. Total emotional engagement.

The school festival continues to be a seething cauldron of hormones. Manbagi put two and two together and came up as the odd one out, but she hasn’t reckoned on her friends. Elsewhere, Tadano gets in touch with his feminine side, the FBI and CIA throw down, and things that make you go hurm.

This book is quintessential Komi in the best sort of way. It starts off pretty good and just builds and builds on itself to be rather excellent without relying on Najimi or going for any especially gut-busting jokes (although that one sequence with the older woman who loves theatrical productions was pretty stellar - she really says what everybody was thinking at the end).

Even if it just kicks the can a little further down the narrative path, the way they resolve the Manbagi/Komi/Tadano triangle is pretty satisfying and really has a little something for everybody. I thought last time that Manbagi’s revelation would lead to her silently letting things go, but the poor thing is made of more emotions than that and it really sets her up for a bruising.

Yet, despite my futile preference for Manbagi, there’s no denying that Komi kills it here - when she needs to step up and be there for her friend, she is there and not just as a bunch of scribbles on paper. It’s a really nice progression for her and, for all the times that others have been there for her, it’s such a nice twist to see her there for somebody else and amidst such a messy situation.

Friends liking the same guy is never going to end well, but you can make it end less painfully and everybody is trying their hardest. Well, minus Tadano, who gets two dates and doesn’t even realize it. The food stall he and Manbagi visit might be the book’s highlight, but this is Komi and Manbagi’s volume through and through (too bad that one girl who is hellbent on sniffing out yuri couples is a few minutes too late)

Everything else is a blur of antics. The student council goes too far, the former student council president goes too far correcting it, Naruse and Ase have half a beautiful moment together (why do these two work so well as a couple?), and somebody is definitely going to realize they’re a little gay for Tadano, by which I mean a lot.

With a lot of time given over to the Komi and Manbagi talk, it’s pretty easy to forgive this one for not being constantly funny. I’d much rather know that the series can split between being serious when it needs to be and still going for big laughs, which it does, and remain just as strong, if not stronger. For it to be as fun as it is, seventeen volumes on, is a minor miracle.

5 stars - c’mon, they didn’t totally crush Manbagi’s hopes and dreams and she got a date out of it! And everything else was great too and Yamai only showed up in a couple panels and was never seen otherwise. It’s like Komi perfection.

We’re getting closer and closer to the end of this slow burn and I absolutely can’t wait! Komi is becoming more confident and her speaking moments are happening more and more often! I love seeing her growth.

I also love seeing the other characters starting to notice this slow burn 👀

Happy reading!

Possibly the very best volume yet. This was gorgeous and so much fun. I live for Tadano in drag and will take it whenever it is available thank you very much. Shoko has grown so much, and we see a new side of her here. She expresses herself with such enthusiasm and love. Lots of great guest appearances and development for some of the newer characters. There's so much to love here and I was pretty emotional. The art is so good too. A gorgeous style has emerged and nothing else hits quite like it. I well deserved phenomenon, can't wait for the next one.

This was a cute installment. No new friends were made, but a deeper understanding between Komi and Manbagi was made and I'm all for that character development and girls supporting girls and not tearing each other down or forcing one to give up on their feelings because a friend has the same feelings for the same person. I liked how Komi is starting to grow in her communication skills and is starting to talk more the more comfortable she is with her friends.

The class’s play is a roaring success thanks to their star princess Komi, and her and Tadano’s performances get cheers for her but jealous leers for him. Later when Tadano gets into a funny wardrobe situation, Komi and Manbagi have an emotional moment together when they both share their feelings for him and ponder over who suits him more. It definitely looks like their friendship will still stay strong, despite them both liking the same guy. A (100%/Outstanding)

It's been a while since I've read one of these. They've been tricky to get my hands on lately.

Because of this, I hardly remember any names, and I've even forgotten some faces.

As far as I can tell, this volume has a lot of development compared to many others. It had its usual fun, as well as some more serious moments.

There are things I personally dislike about this volume. But after some thinking, I believe that's more so my personal preferences, rather than an actual issue with the book. I would explain what it is that I don't like, but I worry it's a bit of a spoiler, and I try to stay away from spoilers when reviewing.

While yes we got some greater character development, and story development. I’m not really liking the direction it’s taking currently. Also, this series is becoming less cute and fun to read :/

Best volume so far! I loved how instead of letting a guy get between them Shoko and Rumiko acknowledged they both have feelings for Tadano but their friendship will always be more important. Love to see girls supporting each other 😭❤️

AND this is a huge milestone for Shoko Komi and her communication... she spoke more than she ever has in one go to Rumiko (she even shouted!) and clearly expressed her thoughts out loud. I'm so proud of her!
