I had a little background on Osaka after teaching an essay about here that appears in a recent collection of Best American Sports Writing. I also read a chapter about her in a middle grade book about Kid Olympians (biographies that emphasized their childhood trials and triumphs before their big Olympic achievements). However, this book gave me a lot more detail about her.
Young readers learn about her parents, her childhood, her early training in tennis, her biracial identity and how others did not always accept or understand this, and her career in tennis as an amateur, a pro, and an Olympian. I learned a lot of detail about her career, but I also learned that she has a fashion line and that she was very outspoken about the Black Lives Matter movement in the wake of George Floyd's murder (and a handful of other unarmed Black people killed by police officers).
Osaka, as I learned a few years ago, is also an advocate for mental health, particularly the mental health of athletes who often live under a lot of pressure placed upon them by coaches, event organizers, and the press.
It was a great book that humanizes an athlete while still acknowledging their immense talent and hard work.
An inspirational story that follows the work and persistence of Naomi Osaka and her rise to success and fame, including the seasons where she found the courage to prioritize her mental health and advocate for Black Lives Matter.
Very well written, this book will bring readers into the life Osaka, when she started training for tennis and how she ended up a Grand Slam Champion. Chapters are of shorter length with illustrations scattered throughout. Back matter includes thoughtful questions for readers to consider how they can persist, and references.
I read this aloud to my friend Alex over the phone as she did errands! We wanted reading time but phone/ errand reading demanded something chill, so we read this.
