I'm going through a phase at the moment of re-reading old favourites and the Daniel Jacquot books have long been on my list as he is, without doubt, one of my favourite detectives. But is it him or Marseilles where he works? Probably a combination of the two.

When the sixteen-year-old daughter of wealthy Parisian parents – and the niece of Marseilles' Chief Examining Magistrate – goes missing, Jacquot is brought in to find her. With no ransom demand forthcoming, the authorities fear the worst. Jacquot goes undercover in Marseilles and discovers a child trafficking network. Along the way, he has to deal with a beautiful young woman who is able to see and sense things, a jealous rival cop, a number of seedy small-time crooks, two deadly Corsican hitmen, and their boss, the sadistic daughter of a Marseilles crime lord.

Brutal and bloody (some of the deaths and torture scenes are hard to read), this is a fantastic crime novel. And I really need to visit Marseilles.
