A Mandeville Mystery #3

The Mandeville Shadow

Rate this book
The unputdownable third book in the Mandeville series, full of secrets, mystery and romance…

It’s the week before Halloween, and Kate Durrant is helping her mother move out of the little cottage her parents used to share, until her father’s sudden, heartbreaking death. Plagued by guilt that she couldn’t visit her dad in the days before he died, Kate now has only memories for company. Memories and… something else. Since she was a small child, Kate has been able to see and feel the history of objects she touches. She’s always kept her gift secret, not knowing fully what it is, or how far she can push it.

One evening, while visiting her father’s grave, Kate takes a detour into the shadowy woods behind the church. Wandering the mossy paths, deep in thought, she realises she’s lost her way just as she stumbles upon the wrought-iron gates of Hill House, home to the illustrious Mandeville family.

Welcomed in and offered a position on the staff as a housemaid, Kate soon discovers that not all is right within the ornate halls of the manor house. The family’s closely guarded secrets are beginning to unravel and it seems that a spirit from the house’s past is bent on taking revenge.

With the clock ticking, will Kate's unique gift, combined with the strength of a love beyond the grave, be enough to save the Mandeville legacy?

While this book wasn't quite as interesting as the first two books in the series, it was still a very enjoyable read.

The whole series has been such a joy to experience. Whether it be time travel or seeing the history of an item by touching it, Callie Langridge has done a fantastic job weaving the story of the Mandeville family and Hill House with these paranormal elements.

It's fascinating to see how the special visitors help the family and affect everyone at Hill House.

The Mandeville Shadow is a good installment in this series. I hope for more to come.

I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are my own.

Another journey into the mysterious Hill House, owned by the Mandeville Family for generations. In this story, we find our heroine Kate is hopeless, just the kind of people that Hill House likes to help. Kate's father has recently passed, and her Mother can no longer afford their house. So the Mom moves in with Kate's brother. Mom thinks Kate is still working at the steel mills and will return to work with them, along with her apartment. But what Mom doesn't know is that the steel mills are suffering and have left Kate go. She has no job AND no home! But by happenstance, as she is leaving the cemetery after visiting her Father's grave that Kate meets someone from Hill House who will change her life! I love the mystery surrounding the stories! Who is wreaking havoc? And why? But, most importantly, can they stop the danger before someone gets hurt permanently?

Wow! Another spellbinding story by Callie Langridge! I adore the Mandeville series and each one is greater than the one before. It is easy to get lost in the atmospheric setting, unusual events and dramatic lives of these unique characters. It is all a perfect paranormal package that immediately pulls you in to the time travel magic of Hill House. This third instalment is exceptionally written, creatively imagined and exquisitely memorable. It flows like a winding river through some fascinating dream-like territory. The Mandeville Shadow is aptly set in the week before and during Halloween so no mystery or ghoulish event is spared.

I loved seeing ‘old friends’ and ‘family’ members from the previous Mandeville books. And it was a pleasure to meet Kate, an intriguing new character. She is a lovely person, hard-working and kind. Being the newcomer, her life is showcased and we, of course, wonder what special part she will play in the Mandeville saga. We learn quickly she has a unique gift that she doesn’t quite understand. It has been visible since she was a child. Her family hailed it as a party trick but it definitely is not that! When she touches certain items, she can sense and see their history. This is quite unsettling for her as she never knows when these visions will strike. This gift will become an important ingredient in the story’s buffet of twisty drama.

As we learned before (if you have read the previous two), Hill House chooses who it wishes to utilise and interact with and it is often someone who has had a deep loss. Kate has just lost her job and father in the same day, followed by her family home. As a result, her mother can no longer pay the mortgage. Kate is riddled with grief and guilt for she was unable to be with her father in his last moments. She did not know he was so ill as he kept his sickness hidden. She was very close to him, took his advice and sought his approval. Her talent was actually in dressmaking but she took up a position at the Steel Works to fulfill her father’s wishes.

Once Kate’s mother moves in with her brother and the house is sold, she has no idea where she will live or work. After visiting her father’s grave at the church, she takes a detour into the shadowy woods. Unfortunately, she gets lost and with darkness not far off, she tries hard to get her bearings. After wandering in various directions, she sees a couple of unusual trees and then bumps into Bertie, the caretaker of Mandeville Estate. He offers his help out of this confusing location. She begins to share about herself as she feels very comfortable with him. When he tells her about an available housemaid position, she cannot believe her luck. After applying for it, she is hired on the spot. It is an answer to her dilemma as room and board are part of the deal. She now has a place to live and an income. Once meeting the other staff, she settles in and many strange things begin to happen.

I loved how Callie explores and utilises the history of Halloween and its roots in Ireland in the plot. This deepens the mystery but also quietly educates those who may not know of its origins and how it has been added upon. The ‘evil enemy’ in this series has grown in his sinister activity. During the time when the veil between worlds is at its thinnest, some negative things begin to bleed through. I won’t say more but we get quite a frightening picture of what has been happening since the previous book.

Tommy’s safety remains central in this novel. From the start, he has always been an intriguing character. He is older now and in university but returns home extremely unwell. What is causing these bizarre episodes that come and go? As the plot unfolds, strange events occur that call upon Kate’s gift. And the story builds to a galloping climax with plenty of action. It’s a wild ride before all is explained in a satisfying resolution.

I enjoyed The Mandeville Shadow immensely and could not put it down until I had read the last word! Amazing writing with never a lull or dull moment. A must read of 2023! I highly recommend this enchanting novel and give it 5 stars. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Thanks to Storm Publishing and Netgalley for my review copy.

frustrating read

I was sorely disappointed by this book. It felt like possibly the first third of the last book of the trilogy, but the author ran up against the deadline and decided to publish what she had and call it a series instead of a trilogy. A good two thirds of the book is lead up, and by the end I was left scratching my head.

**SPOILERS**
A few of the problems with the book:
*Many of the “rules” created in the first two books are seemingly randomly discarded.
*The bad guy is obvious. And he’s not caught or dealt with in any way. In fact, he’s more powerful than ever but after a ridiculously brief climax everyone seems to think life is a bowl full of cherries.
*Characters from previous books suddenly have powers and history they didn’t before, while others are suddenly impotent for no defined reason.
*Where is Capt Mandeville/his ghost?!
**END SPOILERS**

The writing continues to be good and I liked watching the children grow up, particularly Bertie. Kate is sweet and I like her work ethic. Her story is nowhere near as tragic or traumatic as Louisa or Nell’s, which was a pleasant change. The historical tidbits, though much more sparse than previously, were still fun.

Overall it’s an ok book. I don’t think it lives up to its potential or its predecessors. Honestly, I want to know how they finally defeat the bad guy, but after reading this highly frustrating story I don’t think I want to read several more like it to get there. I’m not sure how Ms Langridge will be able to introduce yet another Visitor with even greater powers without really going over the top. It will be interesting to see if she breaks her mold and sticks with the current cast for the next book. But instead of reading it the very day it comes out, I may wait a while and read the reviews before I decide if I’ll continue the series.

Catherine’s brother Harry just picked up their mom because since the death of Catherine‘s father they have sold their home on the Manville estate and she is going to live with her brother Harry and his family this leaves Catherine at a bit of loose ends her plan is to stay at the home until the next weekend when the new tenants arrive.her mom doesn’t know it, but she has been laid off from her job at the steel factory but after visiting her dad‘s grave she decides to take a quick walk in the woods when she finds a gate covered by shrubs after a bit she gets lost but thankfully runs in to Bernie the caretaker for the Manville Manor in what a lucky run in it is. The next day while looking at the post office for want ads in the window she runs into Bernie again who is there to post for a new house made at the Manville Manor and Catherine jumps on the opportunity it is on her first day there while getting settled in that she sees a door leading to an unused portion of the house and although the door is locked looking through the glass cc a shadow move in the dark interior but blows it off as to the strange activities of the day. The family seems so nice not only to each other but their staff and it all seems too good to be true… End it almost is because the longer Catherine stays the more she knows something sinister is a foot. OK I’m going to stop here I want to say for one thing I am so tired of in the summary it says it’s a time slip novel and I would not at all considered this a time slip book to me a time slip is when the person is actually in a different time not only that in the beginning of the book they said Catherine could only touch items and get a glimpse of the past when in her parents home and I won’t say win but that was the first thing I noticed that was a discrepancy not to mention I was getting so tired of listening to them clean the house on myself I’m not big on cleaning house and don’t want to read about others doing it either. That wasn’t the only Mundane details I will say once the book got into it which was almost 40% into the book it really got into it and I did enjoy the last 60% but almost DNF it at 30 having said that I do recommend it to those who like paranormal
Historical fiction then I do believe you will enjoy this book I am curious to read the first two books and this Siri‘s because so many people I know love it I gave it three stars because even though I struggled at first I am glad I finished it. I do recommend it if you’re a big fan of the genre I specified. I want to thank the author the publisher and NetGalley for my free arc copy please forgive any mistakes as I am blind and dictate my review.

I've read three of the Mandeville books, in order, so this is more a commentary on all three.

First, I love the premise, because I love a good time-travel romance! And the first one ("A Time for Change") in particular fits the bill. Of these three books, I think this one is best. The author sets up the framework for a good series, and she doesn't deviate from it. The means by which her characters travel through time is complex, but she is solid in how it works throughout all three novels. It would be easy to cheat a little in how the travel is handled, but she keeps it consistent.

Next, the characters are interesting and enjoyable, for the most part. The main female character (MFC) in each is a strong person who has been beset by a deep tragedy, which is important in how she comes to the Mandeville estate. (I have a few quibbles with Nell/Helen in the second book, "The Mandeville Secret," because she became a wee bit annoying, but I might be a little harsh on her because I, too, have had writer's block!)

My biggest complaint about the series is that books 2 and 3 are too long! I felt like I was living right along with the characters because every single activity felt documented. Every cup of tea that was poured, stirred, drunk and enjoyed. Every fire that was laid in the hearth. Every meal that was prepared and served. I like detail, but this was just too, too much. These books needed a good editor to trim out some of this excess.

While I enjoyed the third book, "The Mandeville Shadow," I felt like it took too long to get to the heart of the mystery. Not until a good third of the way through the book did we get a handle on what made this book a mystery, and find out what the shadow and secret were.

I will probably go on to read book No. 4 in this series, but needed a break from time travel so escaped into a romcom ... only to discover that it, too, is a time travel story ("Cassandra in Reverse"!)

If you enjoy a very British novel with a little mystery, a little fantasy, some healthy doses of romance and a credible time-travel plot, give the Mandeville series a try. Just be patient, because these characters drink a lot of warm beverages by the hearth!

The Mandeville Shadow is the third book in the Mandeville Saga. A house that helps people in need and allows love over different time periods.

In the 3rd book Kate Durrant is hired as a housemaid for the Mandeville’s at Hill House in 1935. Her father has died, her mother has gone to live with her brother and his family and she has lost her job in the accounting department of a steel mill. The job at Hill House is manna from heaven. The work is hard, but there is a lovely room rent free, the companionship of the sisters Audrey and Rosemary, a family that treats her well and with kindness, and then there is Bertie, young Bertie from the previous books is now all grown up and the estate manager for the Mandeville’s. Kate has the ability to hold objects and see their past. This has always been a parlor game within her family, but at Hill House, it starts to take a sinister turn when Tommy, the Mandeville’s eldest son come back from Cambridge extremely ill, and seemingly possessed by an evil entity. It is up to Kate, Bertie, Elliot and Mrs. Hart to root out the villain and save Tommy. We even get a cameo appearance from Louisa, which is never long enough (I want to know more about her life) and once again, love and the magic of Hill House conquers all,

The third book in the series was an excellent addition, but I will alway have a soft spot for the 1st book, A Time to Change., but I love revisting Hill House and it;s inhabitants and hope for future novels in the series.

Thanks to Netgalley, Storm Publishing and the author for the chance to read and review this book.

1935 and Kate Durrant is still grieving for her father who died just a few months previously. Supporting her mother in the sale of the house she can no longer afford to live in, and arranging for brother Harry to help clear the house has kept Kate’s emotions under control, but when Harry drives off with their mother and a few belongings, Kate breaks down and realises that life will never be the same without her beloved father.

Desperate not to add to her mother’s misery, Kate has kept it to herself that she no longer has a job, nor anywhere to live. Plans need to be made. Step in Bertie Morrison and the imposing Hill House.

This is far from my usual read and I did approach with some trepidation. However, I was pleasantly surprised. A good story, well written and I would happily read the next instalment if only to find out more about the mysterious Louisa! Personally I could do without the love story element, not to my taste at all, but appreciate how it helps the plot move forward.

Read in one sitting, so I must have enjoyed it!

3.5*

A fantastic new installment in the Mandeville family saga.
Whether it be time travelling, channeling memories and essence of people past or future, or sensing the history of objects through touch, Callie Langridge has all of the paranormal elements superbly down pat. All embroiled within a scarily accurate description of historic life in the 1910's, 20's, 30's or beyond.
The Mandeville family and Hill House is definitely somewhere I would love to spend time with, if only in each installment of the series.
I am always fascinated by how 'special visitors' find their way to Hill House and help members of the family and how each visitor helps in a different way. They never seem to find the answers to what they need to know until the ending of the book however, maybe as a twist, one character may enlist the house and the help of Elliot, Mrs Hart, Bertie and Tommy right from the start!
I love each new installment and can't wait for the next one!
My thanks to Netgalley and the author and publisher for a temporary copy in exchange for an honest review.

I read this book based on the description of the plot, not having read the rest in the series. I’ll go back and read the others, but I was mostly able to follow the story without problem. Kate has lost her father, her job, and her family home when she stumbles upon Hill House and a new start. An unexplained paranormal gift starts to become more active even as she settles in the house, makes friends, and finds someone she cares about. The odd happenings become more intense as Halloween approaches and it becomes clear that a member of the family is in danger. I liked this book and enjoyed seeing the relationships between Kate and her new friends develop. The spooky atmosphere is well done, and the dialogue is well written and believable. I did feel the story moved along fairly slowly until the last few chapters, when several things seem to come together so quickly it became harder to suspend disbelief. A couple of things I’m sure will make more sense once I read the earlier books. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an advance copy in exchange for an honest opinion.

I’m always in my happy place reading a Callie Langridge book!

We are transported back to 1935 with the telling of this wonderful story.
This is the third book that I have read from the author, and my third return to Hill House and the Mandeville family. Every book has been fab, and I get so excited when I know a new book is out.
I struggled each time I had to put this book down, I get so absorbed and lost within the story that I want to speed read, to know what happens next, but I also knew I needed to slow down as all to soon the book would be finished, and then I would feel bereft leaving Hill House and its characters behind.

Kate is featured in this book, her time to experience Hill House, which is a house that draws people that are down on their luck, rock bottom in their life to it.
I won’t say what the story of the book is about as it would give too much away, and that would spoil someone else’s enjoyment.

I can’t wait to read future books from the author.

Many thanks to NetGalley and Publisher for an advanced e-book copy. Opinions about the book are entirely my own.

The Mandeville Shadow by Callie Langridge takes readers on a captivating journey through time, mystery, and love in the third installment of the Mandeville series. The protagonist, Kate Durrant, grapples with guilt and grief after her father's sudden death, all while harboring a unique ability to sense the history of objects through touch. As she finds herself drawn into the enigmatic world of Hill House, Langridge expertly weaves paranormal elements into a rich historical tapestry of the 1910s, 20s, and 30s. The Mandeville family's secrets unravel, and a vengeful spirit from the past threatens their legacy. Kate's character development, coupled with the seamless integration of familiar faces from previous books, creates a compelling narrative. The novel explores Halloween's Irish roots, utilizing the thinning veil between worlds to amplify supernatural elements. The Mandeville Shadow is a masterpiece of paranormal fiction, blending historical accuracy with a suspenseful plot, leaving readers eagerly anticipating the next chapter in the enchanting world of Hill House.

Callie Langridge is back with her third historical mystery featuring the Mandeville family and Hill House. I love how she weaves mystery, romance and time travel together as she introduces new characters who need the Mandevilles as much as they need her characters. Central to the stories is a magical house that connects the people in need.

In the Mandeville Shadow, Kate stumbles into Hill House's estate manager in 1935 shortly after her father dies and she loses her job due to Depression downturns. Bertie, the estate manager who grew up working for the Mandevilles, senses something special about Kate and brings her to Hill House where she is hired as a live-in maid. When Tommy, the Mandeville heir, stumbles home from Cambridge desperately ill, Bernie helps Kate understand her supernatural skills, so they can solve the mystery of Tommy's illness.

A sweet romance and interesting mystery. I look forward to more installments in the Mandeville Saga. Thany you to NetGally and the publisher for an advance reader copy of this delightful book.

1935: Kate Durrant has just lost her father and her mother has moved to live with Kate's brother Harry. Kate has what her family has always described as 'her party trick' where she can see the history of items she touches. After her father died, Kate is lost after visiting his grave at St Mary's Churchyard. She is found by Albert Morrison, manager of the Mandeville Estate, Hill House.
Albert takes her to Hill House and, without discussing with anyone about her personal loss or the loss of her job, she is offered the position of maid to the Mandeville family.
With this position, Kate discovers both the house and the affection of both the family and the other servants.

I was only part way through this story when I realised that this book is only part of the story. I have since discovered that there are two more previous stories which I now must investigate.
I loved this story, it has the right of mystery and intrigue to give me a very happy reading experience.

Book 3 in the series moves ahead in time another 10 years or more and introduces us to a new character named Kate. She is another troubled soul that somehow winds up coming to Hill House to be employed as a maid. She is immediately drawn to Bertie (who has been in the series all along). We've followed him from a very young age, but now he is an eligible bachelor, and he and Kate fall in love.

Of course, there is a reason that Hill House has brough Kate into the fold. She is there to help young Tommy combat the evil George Caxton, who is now in prison. Even behind bars, Caxton is still out to torment the Mandeville family, but with Kate (and Louisa's help), good triumphs again.

Admittedly these books are starting to feel a wee bit formulaic, but I find the characters endearing. Each book in the series reveals new character layers (like that of Bertie and Elliot), and I find it rather charming to be a return visitor to Hill House.

So lovely to be back with the Manderville family once again. It is clear to see that the author is really getting comfortable with writing about her characters now. The first two books were very enjoyable but this one was even better. Set around Halloween 1935 it has an extra spooky atmosphere. Kate comes to Hill House after the death of her father and loss of her job and home. The Manderville family welcome her but her gift of 'seeing things' when touching old objects intensifies. She strikes up a friendship with Bertie who understands what is going on and helps and guides her in fulfilling her real purpose for being at Hill House. Another episode of a brilliant, captivating story. I really hope there's more to come. 5*

Absolutely loved this riveting read. This is the third in the Mandeville series by Callie Langridge, and I’ve loved them all!
Hill House has many secrets and a lot of history. Kate Durrant has recently joined the household after losing her father, her job and her home. She’s welcomed with open arms by the Mandeville Family, but she senses that things are not as they may seem on the surface at Hill House. Kate has a unique gift of being able to glimpse past events, and what she sees in the house is dark and very troubling. There are things that just do not want to let go, and the onset of Samhain brings a sense of menace. This is a compelling story that kept me engaged from beginning to end. The characters all gelled perfectly, and the story racked up the tension, drawing me in and not letting me go. Highly recommended

I wanted a break from murder stories and I found it in this family saga, touching on the supernatural in a beautiful village setting.

Kate is burdened with grief and loss. Her father dead, her mother sold the family home moved out to stay with her son and Kate has lost her job at the steelworks. No home, no family her chance encounter on a walk brings her a chance of work and a welcoming, warm family home.

Hill House has a history, most of it good but with one villain who reaches out mentally to destroy the young heir of this home. Kate has spiritual powers of her own, hitherto known to her in the most fleeting manner but now developing at a faster rate to protect and save Tommy from death.

Fascinating story, beautifully crafted.

I really enjoyed Kates story in this next instalment of the Mandeville series. I love the paranormal aspect with Kate’s special talent developing in time with her move to Hill House. I really like the idea of the house choosing the person it needs to help the family, in what ever shape or form that person can give them. The era is well researched too, and the writing is evocative of the time. I’m glad I’ve read the previous book, as it definitely helped sort out the characters, but it is still a stand alone read. Really enjoyable, and I definitely want to read whatever comes next.

Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read and review this book.

I love this series of books where the main character is a house! If you haven't read any of the Mandeville series, I urge you to begin as soon as possible. Kate is the person who is brought into the orbit of the family following the death of her father and the loss of her job. She gets work with the Mandeville family, where we meet some familiar faces. I couldn't put this down, as with the previous two books, the characters suck you in to their lives and there is a real sadness when we have to leave them.
I cannot recommend this series enough, it is a worthy 5 star read. Thank you Netgalley and the publishers for an advance copy of The Mandeville Shadow.

I loved this third book as much as the first two. The story is engaging, the characters well developed, the plot keeps you reading until your eyes close or you are done. Callie Langridge has created a marvellous little world with the family of Hill House, one the reader comes to care about; eager to learn more.

I very much enjoyed learning more of Bertie's story, and watching something lovely happen in his life. In the often difficult world, Hill House is, at its heart, a story of family and ultimately of love.
So very well done.

With the death of her father, the loss of the family home and her mother moving away to live with Kate's brother, and her state of unemployment the position of maid in the Mandeville home seemed a godsend. But appearances can deceive and mysteries ensue. A delightful read, but I wish I had started the series sooner. Still, a very nice read.

This is the third book in the Mandeville series and personally I think it is the best. It is a standalone story but I personally think it helps to have read the other two because characters from them are very relevant to this story.
It is a story of how love can conquer evil as well as a budding romance.
It is one of those books that grabs you from the very first page and you just don’t want it to end.

Fantastically atmospheric and oozing with the supernatural, this book was a real treat and ticked a lot of boxes for me. I loved the story as a stand-alone historical book but the added intrigue of the mysterious goings on and the gift for seeing things bestowed on our main character made it just perfect. I was very engaged by all of the characters and they were well crafted with their win backstories and personalities. The budding romantic edge was also very sweet and compelling to read. There was a good sense of tensions brewing throughout and some scarier moments and the real sense that you ‘feel’ the resonation of events past in the very fabric of old houses rang true for me. An excellent read, would definitely like to read more.

A young woman who is still reeling from the death of her father and the loss of her family home has nowhere to go. Until she meets a man who says they are hiring for work at The Mandeville estate. She gets the job and now has a place to live. She realizes she was brought to the estate because she has a special set of skills that the family needs more than ever.

This was such a good read!

Outstanding

Called Langridge really know how to draw the reader in. Another page turner. I read in a day.
Recalling characters from earlier books. What about Alice she hardly got a mention. Yet she was part of the escapades in the Mandeville secret.
Once again I was drawn in almost feeling what Kate did.
Any reader won't be disappointed

This book was just too far fetched for me especially the ending which was so quick and confusing. Lots of irrelevant details and perhaps I should have read the previous books. Nevertheless the book with it’s supernatural references was a blah read for me.

This is the third book of the Mandeville series. I enjoyed it. Kate has the ability to touch things and feel the history in them. Seems hard to grasp, but so heartbreaking. Must read.

I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

The third in a series, The Mandeville Shadow by Callie Langridge delved into the supernatural too much for my reading pleasure. While enjoying the first two of the Mandeville Mysteries, I did not enjoy this one as much.

I received a copy for my review, but all opinions are my own.
