Crave [Dramatized Adaptation] #1, Part 1

Crave (Part 1 of 2) [Dramatized Adaptation]

Rate this book
My whole world changed when I stepped inside the academy. Nothing is right about this place or the other students in it. Here I am, a mere mortal among gods...or monsters. I still can't decide which of these warring factions I belong to, if I belong at all. I only know the one thing that unites them is their hatred of me.

Then there's Jaxon Vega. A vampire with deadly secrets who hasn't felt anything for a hundred years. But there's something about him that calls to me, something broken in him that somehow fits with what's broken in me.
Which could spell death for us all.

Because Jaxon walled himself off for a reason. And now someone wants to wake a sleeping monster, and I'm wondering if I was brought here intentionally—as the bait.

Have I had this on my TBR for almost 3 years now? Yes
Was I a huge Twilight nerd? Also yes
Am I a 37 year old woman who went in to this book knowing it was a YA paranormal romance with Twilight vibes? Yes
Did I eat it tf up? Every single word.

“𝘐 𝘴𝘢𝘪𝘥 𝘪𝘵 𝘸𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥 𝘣𝘦 𝘣𝘦𝘵𝘵𝘦𝘳 𝘪𝘧 𝘸𝘦 𝘸𝘦𝘳𝘦𝘯’𝘵 𝘧𝘳𝘪𝘦𝘯𝘥𝘴, 𝘯𝘰𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘐 𝘥𝘪𝘥𝘯’𝘵 𝘸𝘢𝘯𝘵 𝘵𝘰 𝘣𝘦.”
- Okay Edward lol

While I understand what other reviewers are saying about the voice actors. I still loved it. But I do feel like they picked somebody way too old to play the mmc, this is supposed to be an emo teen boy, not Rhysand jr. But other than that, I loved the actual story, it gave me the same feelings that Twilight did, even though some parts were of course a bit cringe. lol. I still love it and I will be moving on to part 2 of this specific audiobook now.

Happy reading babes!

I liked it a lot, but I do love Graphic Audio’s full casts a lot. Jaxon does sound way too old - but I think we often forget he isn’t 18 years old, he is over 100.

“I said it would be better if we weren’t friends, not that I didn’t want to be.”

Me to this book. I did want to try this again in a different atmosphere. And well, the graphic audio made it a bit better but I still have the same concerns and issues I did when I first read this book... The writing so far is pretty, eh, its alright. Simple and causal. Luckily the audio makes the long winding paragraphs tolerable, and her endless descriptions bearable. I think my main issue is with the characters themselves in a character driven book so far.

Grace is just...ugh she is so freaking dumb. She literally ignores so many red flags, writes them off even when she is sus about them. But does she listen to her instincts? No. Maybe this is just what teenagers do. Maybe this book is TOO YA for me. I just cannot suspend my disbelief that this girl literally falls head over heels for the first hot guy she sees in a day. Like...what kind of Anna BS is this? Jaxon, just like prince hans, aint your prince. I do not know, maybe this is just teenagers are like and my brain is just too mature to go along with it.

As for the guys...Jaxon is/was a bit better in the graphic audio but eh..he doesnt really set my heart aflame. He just seems like the guy who wants you to himself but then doesnt want you out in public because it will ruin his image. He will talk sweet to you one day then almost murder you the next. He is just too wishy washy for my liking. But he can pull on the slight charm I guess.

But not going to lie, I would of been a Flint gal. He is just so funny and kind and intoxicating. With no reason to worry about his behavior and such. Right? Flint is just the guy everyone wants to be around and who makes people smile. But he is a poor imitation of Jacob. There can only be one Jacob.

Overall, I think the author is trying to write both a plot driven story and a character one and both are falling to the wayside. The first half so far seems character driven. I believe the second half will be more plot driven. Wish me luck.

Was twilight my comfort book when I was in high school?
yes. yes it was.
Did I know going into this book (even though I'm 31 years old)- that it was a YA boarding school paranormal Fantasy Romance?
yes. yes I did.
Sometimes after reading High Fantasy, we all need a little break.
I don't know what she put in this book, but I devoured this one like I didn't have 3 other books I've been trying to simultaneously read.

The Graphic Audio of this book is Amazing!
and while I gave the physical book a 3.5 stars, I'm giving the audio book 5/5 because even though it's obviously the same, the Voice Actors made all the difference in taking this book from "cringe" to something I actually wanted to listen too!
Melody Muze is hands down one of my favorite voice actors. - How I'm supposed to wait for the rest of this series to come out on G.A I have no idea.

I will always listen to something that has Anthony Palmini in it though, I love his voice, and it doesn't seem to matter what book / character it is. The same goes for Gabriel Michael. I can't get enough, those guys could read grocery lists and I would have it on repeat. ( #sorrynotsorry)
I will say this is my first audio book Wyn Delano having a larger speaking part; and while I absolutely love his voice, (swoon) it sounds too mature to be considered in high school ( IMO) But on the same note; I have to have to remind myself that he might be in high school but he's 100 + years old. not 18. so I guess it is fitting in a way.
and while Jaxson's voice is too mature, I find that Macy's voice is too childish; too whiny. Too annoying.
Will I continue with the second book? possibly! still unsure on that.

If anyone has any other recommendations similar this series that is more adult geared I would love that!

Overall, this was a fun read. It made no sense for them to bring Grace into their world without telling her what to expect, but she was a bit ditzy anyway. So many suspicious things are happening, and all it takes to overlook it is a hot guy, sure. It annoyed me how much she was doubting what her cousin was saying about Jaxon in the beginning, but then again, Macy was such a flip flopper about people and who to stay away from.

I am having a really hard time getting into this book. Very much Twilight vibe but their interactions and buildup isn’t as good. Like, how long are we gonna drop hints that “things are different here” and avoid telling Grace what’s going on? It’s dragging sooo much. I hope the next part is better.

Summary of Book 1 Crave:
Human girl Grace is sent to a school in Alaska; Katmere Academy. Apparently it's a school for supernaturals. For some reason people want her dead. She escapes all attempts of killing her, but she does get scarred by these experiences (figuratively and literaly).
Niece and friend Macy is a witch. On first impression posibble friend Flint is a dragon. "Hot brooding boy" Jaxon is a vampire. Weirdly friendly Leah is the "crazy" ex-girlfriend of dead, vampire brother to Jackson; Hudson.
As Grace survives being a human sacrifice for the resurrection of Hudson (by crazy ex Leah), she thinks she can finish her senior year with her boyfriend/mate Jaxon. Until Hudson arives and Grace steps in front of Jaxon to protect him.

Summary Book 2 Crush: Apparently Grace turned in to stone and woke up 4 months after stepping between Hudson and Jackson. It turns out she is a gargoyle. A supposed to be extinct race of supernaturals. And while she woke up, she lost 4 months of memory. Jaxon is delighted to have her back and turns even more protective. His group of friends, Macy and even Flint, try to protect her. After a few days, Grace learns why she gets unsetteling periods of emotions and feelings that don't seem to belong to her. Hudson is stuck in her head. And he does know what happend, but doesn't tell. It is clear he knows Grace on a way deeper level that should be "normal", despite beeing an arrogant vamire prince, Grace learns to listen to what he has to say. He even helps and supports her in ways that Jaxon lacks in.
To get Hudson out of Grace's head, they need to get multiple magical objects.
A yearly sports tournament has one of said pieces as the main prize. Trying to collect the magical items and training for the tournament, Grace learns to navigate her powers. She also learns that she is now the target of the ruling government of the supernaturals; The Circle. Hudson's and Jaxon's parents try to get a grip on Grace, as her being a gargoyle does not comply with there wish for full power.
The group of friends win the tournament. But The Circle's Leading couple; Cyrus and Delilah Vega (parents of the vampire brothers), try to get Grace for themselves. To escape impending torture, Hudson urges Grace to claim a position for The Circle. Trail to become part of The Circle? Ludares hard mode.
Before the new trail will take place, the group of friends try to go to the Unkillable Beast to gather one of the pieces for the ritual/Spell to get Hudson out of Grace's head. The Unkillable Beast turns out to be more than just a beast; he is a gargoyle. Desiding note to kill him but to show mercy, Grace promises to gome back and free him. With the loss of a friend and being exhausted, the group of kids return to school.
High school nemisis and asshole Cole found the spell Jaxon threw away months before. A spell given to him, bij the Bloodletter, to break the matebond between Grace and him. Dispite the pain and hartache they both feel, Grace must go to the trail to claim a seat on the Circle.
Before she steps in the arena, she preforms the spell/ritual to free Hudson from her head. She Chose to complete the ritual without taking away Hudson's powers, as she realises, that it should not be up to her to decide that for him. In return, to help her with the trial, Hudson leaves his powers behind within Grace.
Grace wins the trial, but ofcourse, Cyrus Vega is a true villain and he cheats, manipulates and tries to kill Grace with his eternal bite (poison). Hudson, filled with anger, disintegrades his father, after a dying Grace gave is powers back to him.
After also desintegrating the stadium (the building, not the people inside), Hudson carries Grace in to the forrest with Macy and Jaxon on his heals. He know's a way to maybe save her, and he succeeds in convincing Jaxon to help him.
As Grace is healed by absorbing the stone from the ground around here, Hudson gets territorial as Jaxson tries to comfort Grace. Telling them that he and not Jaxon is Grace's mate.

Summory of Book 3 Covet: With all that has happend, Grace has a hard time of understanding who she is and what she wants. Jaxon is the one she love-s/d, but the matebond is broken. Hudson is part of the living world again and is supposed to be her mate. Chosing means hurting someone, so she holds of to do anything. To end his and her suffering, Jaxon ends thing between him and Grace. Hudson an d Grace go to the Bloodletter to try and "fix" the bond with Grace and Jaxon, as they both care a lot about him and it seems like Grace wants to stay with him. It turns out that fixing is not a posibility so Hudson and Grace try to develop a relationship.
Freeing the Unkillable Beast, leads the tension filled group of friends, to the giants. Because a smith made the shackles that keep the Beast trapped. And they need his knowledge to try and free the Beast. While gathering information, Hudson and Grace share more and more moments where theire relationship can start to form. Hudson gifts Grace a ring, that has more meaning to it. As Hudson hints to a promise he made before.
They find out that there is a magical prison where the smith is held.
Flint, now dating Luca, one of Jaxons friends, asks Grace to join him to come to the Dragon Court to celebrate a festival. Macy, Eden, Hudson and Grace join Luka and Flint. Nuri, Flint's mother, tries to capture Hudson for his crime of killing her eldest son, Flints older brother. After Grace comfronts her and learns that The Crown knows a way to escape the prison, she goos to get Hudson from the in-house-cells and they continue enjoying the festival. The friendschip with Grace and Flint strengthens and as the group revels in New York, Grace and Hudson find eachother in a romantic string of events where Grace learns that a relationship with Hudson is multifaceted. Where Jaxon was an easy relationship, Hudson challanges and supports her in a way that she has and keep agency.
Knowing now they need to go to a specific witch, the Crown, the group of friends try to enter her home. She denies Jaxon access because he 'has no soul'. Grace bargains with the witch for a favor in exchange for a way to escape the prison.
With their return to Katmere Acadamy, Jaxon looses his shit and attacks Hudson. With the time that has passed, more of the friends see and know that Hudson is not the villain he was portraited to be. They hold Jaxon accountable for his actions. He than tells them that because of the breaking of the matebond with Grace, his soul is loosing him. Where Hudson's bond with Grace, made sure she was 'whole' again, he had no such thing happen to him. Knowing Jaxon will slowly die, both Hudson and Grace realise she will choose Jaxon anyway if that meens saving his life.
Graduation comes and Hudson and Flint are arrested by order of the Circle for their murder(attempts). Grace states she has a right to stay with her mate, and thus the three of them are led to the prison. They ask for and land in a cell with Remy. A powerfull warlock who lived his entire life within the prison. His cellmate Calder, a manticor. They learn from Remy how the prison punishes it's inhabitants. The mental torture makes it very hard for Flint and Hudson to keep hoop and believe in themselves. Grace can't be tortured by the prison for an unknown reason to Remy and her. She does get the oppertunity to help Hudson with his mental punishment. His guilt and selflothing do develop further and even though he knows Grace will choose Jaxon, he tries to enjoy these last moments with her.
When de prisinors proceed in there plan to escape, it turns out that the posibility to escape, is rigged and made more dificult for them. When they are already broken and beaten up to collect enough money, Hudson and Grace are thrown in to a fight with two trolls. During this fight, Grace realises that she loves Hudson and she tells him so. They will find another way to save Jaxon. They free the smith, Caldor and themselves. Remy stays behind but promisses that he will see tham again.
When they exit the prison, the rest of their friends are waiting for them. Chaos is about to come, because Cyrus is believed to try and free (thus kill) the Unkillable Beast. To make sure he does'nt kill the gargoyle, the group of friends go to the islang where the beast is trapped. It's a battle when they get there and within the chaos and battle, Luka dies protecting Flint. When Jaxon also loses his life while protecting him, Nuri sacrifices her dragonhart to Jaxon to save him. The Unkillable Beast is freed and a Medieval king stand before them. The great-great-and-so-on-father of Grace. The last Gargoyle King.
When all of them return to school, they learn that the fight on the islang was a distraction set up by Cyrus. The real play was that he attacked the school and kidnapped all the students and staff from Katmere.

DNF @ 85%

I always struggle to listen to audiobooks--in fact this is as far as I've gotten with one. But where this one was a performance with a full cast rather than a singular monotone reading, I was able to enjoy the actual audiobook performance. The book itself, however, I couldn't deal with anymore.

It's disappointing to me because this book could have actually had a chance at being enjoyable and standing on its own, but the author blatantly chose not to do that. This isn't even Twilight fanfiction. It reads as the indulgent hobby story of a Twilight fangirl. Like one that a megafan of Twilight would write for fun for themselves and post on Wattpad. Except it isn't that. It's a traditionally published novel that you can purchase with real world money at quality less than that which you can find for free online. If this were just a Wattpad story I wouldn't be mad, but it's not and I am because this was a waste of my time and should never have been published.

This book cannot stand on its own without Twilight. The book of Twilight itself is in this story. As in the characters in Crave actually read and discuss Twilight. That's a big nope for me, not because I hate Twilight (I don't, I'm a fan) but because this completely destroyed all creative integrity or individuality this book might have had. This breaks the fourth wall for me HARD. A mass amount of other things do that too by being mentioned by their real world names: Netflix, the TV show Legacies, a bunch of different musical artists and songs, GOOGLE. Shoot, Google might as well be considered a character itself with as many times as it was mentioned in the narrative. Major pet peeve ick of mine, this book has made me discover. Plus the use of text abbreviations (OMG, FML, AF, effing). Also a big ick.

Aside from that, the writing is just poor in general. Characterization is a mess of contradictions and stating rather than showing that a character is this way or that. There's way too much filler and so much time wasted. Characters get insane intense feelings for absolutely no reason. I've never seen insta love in a more purer form than this. And insta love CAN work and be done well, but it wasn't here at all. This book takes itself way too seriously for the actual substance that it delivers.

If I had to describe it in one word, it would be tactless.

It could have been cool though. An Alaskan academy which is a Gothic castle with real sconces and tunnels and catacombs beneath it? Right up my alley. Unfortunately, that premise needs to be written by a different author with a different vision, because Crave gave me none of what I was looking for and what it did give me instead was still of poor quality.

I'm enjoying it so far thanks to Graphic Audio, but I admit I'm not exactly a fan of the whole insta-love while the character acknowledges multiple times how dumb & cliché it is to "instantly fall in love" but then one nice gesture & all a sudden it's insta-love.. if I was reading the book rather than listening to the GA dramatized audiobook I prob would've put the book down at that point & not continued, why have a character attempt to be presented as a strong independent woman then not even halfway through the book all it takes is one nice gesture & the character becomes the exact cliché the character claimed they hated? It honestly makes zero sense to me & pretty sure the character fell in insta-love faster than any of the books or movies or whatever that I've ever read or seen to the point it's baffling to me. I will say though, I LOVE Legacies but the description of what Legacies is about was basically an insult to the show & it's mentioned multiple times that I'm sure alot of people have zero idea what the **** Legacies is, why not put 1 more sentence in there saying it's a spinoff of Vampire Diaries, which is much more widely known even if people haven't seen it there's alot more who still recognize the show over that pathetic "explanation" of Legacies.. it's about the ORIGINAL vampires daughter going to a school created by characters in Vampire Diaries & hello the main character is a witch, wolf, & her dad was one of the original vampires. Don't ask me why that annoyed me so much, but if you're going to reference REAL life things like TV shows then don't insult it by giving it an explanation so horrible readers have no idea what is being referenced unless you personally have watched not just Vampire Diaries but The Originals which leads to Legacies.. there was plenty other references that I sincerely have no idea what they're even remotely talking about.. only to circle right back to the whole strong independent woman who scoffs at "insta-love" stories but then insta-loves faster than any of them stories with basically zero reason, being nice to someone doesn't equate to "deep I love you forever & only you soul mate".. thank goodness for Graphic Audio for making it much more bearable enough to want to continue the 2nd half of the book, based on other reviews I've read, I don't think I'm alone in my frustrations of just a couple things I've mentioned (okay ranted lol) outta MANY. Normally I wouldn't even write a review ranting like this but this book so far was a giant cliché, don't make a character who hates clichés then becomes the worst cliché there is. *takes deep breath* okay I rest my case, onto the 2nd half that hopefully starts getting a little better.. hopefully lol

Basic Plot: A girl who has lost her parents goes to live with her uncle at an Alaskan boarding school that definitely is more than it seems.

I know that this is a YA piece, so I went in fully knowing that I am not the intended audience for it. Sometimes, YA is done so well that I can still lose myself in the story, and Graphic Audio is particularly good at that. This story, though, really didn't do it for me on multiple levels. Now, I also grant that this is only part 1 of 2, so I'm willing to bet a lot of issues get resolved in the other half of this, but I don't really intend to listen to that, so the issues will just have to stand.

While the setting is pretty cool (mysterious castle in Alaska), there is only the barest hint of plot to this book. No one tells the female lead what is going on at the school, but it's obvious to the reader/listener here that shenanigans are afoot. I don't know why they don't tell her she's at a supernatural school, but the logistics of keeping that secret from just 1 student strikes me as a major issue. The love interest is straight out of the dark/mysterious/broody trope playlist. So is the cute, precocious roomie. Some of the casting/voicing decisions made for this audio were a bit odd (Jaxon sounded old and Macey sounded whiny). Overall, there wasn't really anything here to get me excited about the rest of the book, let alone the whole series. Not terrible, just not for me.

Okay this book is AMAZING!

I’ve been thinking about reading this book but put it off, omg how I regret that decision. I absolutely loved every second of this even though it’s just part 2 and I have so many theories I need to know if they’re true or not!

I gave this book 5/5⭐️ and I’d say there’s 0 spice in this one. Does it make the book any less good? Fuck noooo.

This book gets to follow Grace who after her parents death is forced to join her uncles school in Alaska. Only there’s something odd about this school and from the moment she gets there things start happening.....one of these things just so happens to be a mysterious guy who she can’t seem to get her mind off though everyone tells her to. Would letting him be so bad as everyone says? Or are they right?

I loved reading this and will now dive into part 2. 🤘❤️

Overall, the book is quite good, but it is highly predictable and is intended for a younger audience. The character voices in the dramatized adaptation are WRONG! The description of Macey makes her sound like a cartoon character. I had a mental image of Angela Anaconda (if you remember that cartoon on television?) , yet her description paints her to be tall, elegant and beautiful. Despite being described as 17 years old, Jackson's voice sounds like he is about 40 years old, while Leah's character voice makes her sound like an elderly woman. I find it awful and off-putting. From my perspective, the audiobook receives three stars.

Sometimes cringe and annoying, but I did enjoy it. I listened to the old audiobooks and it was a blast, and thought it was one of the best series ever. Hearing this again through graphic audio, I realized there's a lot of cliche and cringey lines, but still, it's a good book. I remember the plot getting more interesting after Hudson comes into the picture. Also, GraphicAudio ruined audiobooks for me. If it's not GraphicAudio, I don't want to hear it! Jk!...or am I?

And lastly but not least, why is Jackson's voice so thick? I just finished listening to Onyx Storm and when I heard his Jaxon's voice, my mind was suddenly hit with Tairn speaking LOL

This review is for the Graphic Audio specifically. I love these books that’s why I wanted to listen to the graphic audio as a comfort re-read. But the casting is so off! One of reasons I love these books it is YA - High school angst style. But Jaxon sounds like a 40 year old man in finance that has a rope fetish 🙄 Not the moody/emo TEENAGE BOY! And I’m pretty sure Flint is also Rhysand from the graphic audios for ACOTAR. And Leah sounds like the queen from Bridgerton 🤦🏼‍♀️.

I’m going to continue because how bad are they going to screw up my favorite book boyfriend Hudson 🤷🏼‍♀️

I did not think Graphic Audio could disappoint but there we are. Why did they cast a 40 yo to voice 17 yo Jaxon? And Macy is over annoying. Two very obvious miscasts.

The story is just not good. Feels like a cheap version of Twilight. It is allegedly NOT a fanfic but I just cannot believe it. Everything in the first half of Crave reminds me of Twilight.

That being said, and as I don’t have a lot of GA romantasy left… I am afraid I will have to listen to the rest 🤣

I remember starting this a few years ago and DNFing because the FMC was annoying.

She still is 😅
FMCs like here are why I stopped reading MF romance for a decade 💀

However, the dramatized version made it more palatable so I'll go to part 2 soon.

I'm interested to see where this gies and how the other characters fare.

⭐️4.1 So she doesn’t know what she got herself into… and somehow everyone else is in on it too. Like how is that possible that no one has slipped the biggest secret around? Anyways, let’s see what the second half brings. I don’t enjoy that they are separated. Why can’t they just make it one big one.

So so so so so bad. The narrators are great, but the dialog is so extremely cringy I got second hand embarrassment. I didnt know what to expect when going into this, but I did see it's a popular series so figured I'd give it a try. It was predictable and boring.

This is a re read for me, I read the physical books the first time. Not a huuuggeee fan of the casting for this. I'm sure it's hard to make some people sound young, but a handful of people sound waaayyyy too old to be these characters voice actors.

4 stars only because the voice actors weren't my favorite. The voice of Jaxon grew on me by the end, and I got used to Macy's horribly nasally and whiny voice, but I don't know that I would love the story as much if I hadn't already read the book first..

My feelings about this are basically the same as about the physical book. It’s a bit childish and cheesy with all the references and the dialogue, but there’s still things to enjoy. I was a bit Twilight fan, so all the parallels to that are fun.

Can't wait for the next part. Maybe will read a book just to know what happens. It was quite interesting to say the least. Unfortunately really predictable.
