Esprit is loathed by his human father because of his sexuality, and so when he is discovered to be a wolf and adopted into a new family, he begins to feel accepted for who he is. “Your sexuality is the least interesting thing about you.” He is told. This happiness doesn't last.
When Esprit is abducted and tortured, he begins a journey of self-discovery, passion, loyalty, and eventually activism. He learns about his grandfather’s murder and travels to New York.
This is an incredibly moving book about making meaning from trauma, love, betrayal, power, and manipulation. Esprit is a true survivor, but like many survivors, he eventually chooses to withdraw from an overwhelming world.
Throughout this story, the integrity of Esprit’s character shines through as he seeks to understand and forgive those who hurt him the most. Esprit is very aware of suffering, and while the book addresses homophobia and stigma, it delves deeply into gender-based violence and the abuse of social power in multiple forms. Intimacy, tenderness, and cruelty combine. None of the characters in this story are particularly ‘bad’, as much as they are selfish or determined to gain power.
Esprit, gifted with the empathy that comes with hardship, wishes to resolve suffering as his wolf mother has done. He is a violent protector and is filled with anger towards social injustice. Ultimately, he sets out on a path that guides him into facing his fears and confronting those who have hurt him. As a reader, I cheered for him while hoping he would move away from those who hurt him - without having to be persuaded.
Like many fantasy books, this one is filled with dynamics that fascinate. While reading it, Esprit addresses what it means to be an outsider by focusing on the struggle of living in a human world as a preternatural being. Out of all three of The Lykanos Chronicles, I'd have to say The Wolf Esprit is my favorite. All three stories are extremely well-developed and written with pure talent. I highly recommend them all!
Not only can the author, Joseph Stone write fantastic stories, he can also narrate with perfection. The characters voices were so well done and so believable in all the series, but The Wolf Esprit was the best in my opinion. The series will take you into the author's imagination where you won't want to leave. I simply adore the author's storytelling and hope there will be more. BRAVO 👏
