Can a wounded orc hero protect his treasured mate from a cruel captor?

Nia: I spend my days healing those forced to battle in my stepbrother’s arena and my nights hiding. I’ve resigned myself to the fact that with my burn scars, I’ll never find love. Until my stepbrother commands me to heal his latest acquisition—an orc who was severely injured during capture. I’ve only heard of orcs, but I do my best to heal him and prepare him for the battles he’ll soon face.

As I care for Dakur’s wounds, we exchange glances that slowly grow heated. It’s not long before I’m falling in love for this gruff, stoic warrior who’s as trapped here as me.

Can we find a way free to finally be together?

Dakur: I barely remember being captured, and I’ve suffered since, forced to fight in a ring while humans bet on the outcome. The only good thing in my life is Nia, the human woman who sparked my clan’s pendant. She’s my fated mate, though I doubt I’ll live long enough to be with her. But as we fall deeper in love, I know I must find a way.

I’m going to get us out of this trap, and then I’m claiming Nia as mine.

Orc’s Captive is Book 4 in the Monster Mate Hunt Series. Expect a seductive orc hero with a creative. . . (cough), size difference, a fierce, scarred woman who will do anything to protect those she loves, plus a fantasy world you'll want to live in. HEA guaranteed. Each book is standalone, but the series is more fun if read in order.

Trigger: Nia lives in a dark world, as do the creatures she heals—those her stepbrother forces to fight in the arena. There is no animal death on the page, however. And her stepbrother is mean. He pushes and threatens her.

🛡️ Audiobook Review: Orc’s Captive (Monster Mate Hunt, #4)

Author: Ava Ross
Genre: Romance: Monster romance
Narrators: Stephen Borne and Scarlett Dorian

🦸🏼‍♀️ The Heroine: Nia

Nia’s story begins in a desert community built around a fragile oasis, isolated from the larger cities and suffused with danger. Scarred physically and emotionally by a fire that claimed her mother and stepfather, she is left in the cruel care of her stepbrother, Brunt. His inheritance includes a brutal arena where beasts and captives are forced into bloodsport, and Nia is trapped in his shadow — tending to the wounded, serving his drunken companions, and barricading herself in a room laced with booby traps just to survive the nights. Her resilience is quiet but fierce, and her compassion for the captives hints at the strength she hides beneath her scars.

🦸🏻‍♂️ The Hero: Dakur

Dakur, an Orc from the Maddis Clan, embodies both ferocity and honor. Known as one of the most formidable peoples on the planet, he is betrayed, beaten, and sold into Brunt’s arena. When he awakens, it is Nia’s gentle care that greets him — and in that moment, his pendant glows with undeniable certainty: she is his fated mate. Dakur is not simply a warrior; he is a leader, a strategist, and a man whose loyalty runs deeper than blood. His bond with Nia is immediate, but it is his vision of freedom for all captives that elevates him beyond the archetypal gladiator hero.

🔥 Plot Dynamics

Nia has long dreamed of escape, but her plans become urgent when Brunt announces his intention to auction her off in ten days. The looming threat of marriage to the mayor’s brother — a man whose previous wives have mysteriously perished — sharpens her desperation. Nia has risked herself before to free others, and now she must gamble everything to flee with Dakur. Yet Brunt’s watchful cruelty makes every step perilous, and the tension between captivity and freedom pulses through the narrative.

🌟 Strengths

• Dakur’s intelligence and leadership as clan chief add depth to his character and credibility to his choices.
• His determination to dismantle the entire system of captivity, rather than simply escape, raises the stakes and gives the story moral weight.
• Both leads are well-developed, likable, and emotionally resonant, making their bond feel earned rather than forced.

💔 Limitations

• The arena-gladiator trope is heavily used in alien and monster romance, and while this story offers strong characters, the setup risks blending into familiar territory. Readers who crave originality may find themselves wishing for fresher narrative scaffolding.

🎙 Audiobook Narration

Told in dual POVs with dual narration, the audiobook benefits from the pairing of Scarlett Dorian and Stephen Borne. Dorian’s soft, expressive delivery captures Nia’s vulnerability and quiet strength, while Borne’s husky, measured cadence embodies Dakur’s gravitas and restrained ferocity. Together, they create a balanced rhythm that enhances the emotional beats of the story and underscores the contrast between human fragility and Orc resilience.

💭 Final Thoughts

This audiobook blends familiar tropes with compelling character work, offering listeners a romance that thrives on emotional stakes and the promise of liberation. While the arena setting may feel overused within the genre, Nia and Dakur’s dynamic — her resilience meeting his determination — injects heart and urgency into the narrative. The narration elevates the material, making the listening experience immersive and emotionally charged.

💚 “You taste like joy. Like hope. Like a spring day full of promise. Like you’re mine.”
~~~
Nia’s life hasn’t been easy. After losing her parents, she’s now forced to work for her step-brother, caring for the creatures fighting in his arena, and live under his tyrannical rule. She might appear timid and scared at first sight, but there’s so much strength and resilience in her. Even more, I loved her courage to face all the challenges and hardships thrown her way. And she was so gentle, caring and compassionate to all the misfortunate monsters. Nia is a truly incredible woman and I loved her so, so much!
Dakur is the leader of the Matis Clan, who was presumed dead in the previous story. He’s one huge, fearsome and dangerous orc. And he’s also strong, caring, honorable and fiercely protective. Dakur is a phenomenal male and I loved everything about him!
I absolutely loved everything that happened between Nia and Dakur! Captured and sold to Nia’s brother, Dakur is badly injured and in need of a healer. And from the moment he sees Nia, he knows she’s meant to be his. I loved those two together! I loved their chemistry and how well they fit together. Even more, I loved how caring, understanding and supportive they were of each other. And, despite both being held captive in one way or another, I loved that neither of them was willing to accept their fate and both worked hard to escape. And the stolen moments of passion they shared were so hot! But escaping Nia’s brother is just the beginning and Nia and Dakur need to face the dangerous desert if they want to have a real future together. Dakur and Nia were so perfect for each other and, after everything both went through, they more than deserved to find happiness and love together!
In addition, the storyline was fantastic! Nia’s brother is vile, cruel, heartless and greedy and life under his rule is hard and dangerous for both people and monsters. But when there’s hope, there are also unexpected allies. And it’s high time someone deals with him for good… And Taen might be my favorite shayde of them all! Even more, I loved that we got to meet another of the orc clans and cannot wait to learn more about them in the next stories!
Overall, the story is another remarkable addition to the series. It’s filled with danger, suspense, twists, adventure, violence, drama, action, scorching-hot passion and spectacular characters.
I absolutely loved it!
Finding love in captivity
I loved Nia and Dakur’s monster-human, captive, fated mates romantic suspense tale. The story had a wonderful balance of love, real life issues, danger, plot twists, painful pasts, and spice with two strong, brave and resilient MCs. Nia is a human who is forced by her step brother to live and work in a fighting arena. She dreams of freedom while she cares for the wounded creatures forced to fight. Dakur is an orc and the caedos of his clan. He was captured, beaten and then sold. He ends up chained in a cell in Nia’s brother’s arena. Destined to fight to the death. His pendant flares the instant Dakur lays eyes on Nia showing him that she is his mate. Nia and Dakur’s relationship develops organically without forced intimacy as they try to find ways to steal moments and to make plans to escape their captivity. I have a soft spot for the people who are a bit uncomfortable in their skin because they don’t feel like they fit in or are worthy, like Nia. So I love when they finally see their truth and they get swoon worthy HEAs. The book includes good world building, sweet moments, spice, exciting action, danger, culture differences, painful pasts, imperfect characters, missteps, secrets, evil actors, and love. I am looking forward to reading the next book in the series.
I really love this series 💖🔥🌟
I really love this series and the Orc's that star in them. The world building is good and the characters are well written and have lots of chemistry. This is Dakur's story he was betrayed and snatched from his home two book previous. He finds himself locked up is a gladiator type of arena and he's supposed to fight to the death. The human male running the show is a cruel greedy man who will stop at nothing to get what he wants and he doesn't care who gets hurt in the process. But its his step sister that comes to the rescue. Nia can't stand the cruelty of her step brother. She does whatever she can to heal the creatures he makes fight. She hides her heart because she knows its useless to become attached especially if she knows they are going to die. That is until the day she has to heal Dakur, her world changed and the heart she has guarded for so long bursts open to hold him close. Together they work out a plan of escape where they release all those held in chains and find freedoms in love back at Dakur's clan. This y must face any dangers but fate, and love will win the day. Highly recommend looking forward to the next In The series.🌟🔥💖🔥🌟💖🌟🔥💖🔥🌟💖🔥🌟💖🔥🌟💖
Dakur is our missing orc. But he isn’t missing or dead. He was sold to an evil human man. He is expected to fight till he dies. This would be a terrible fate but Dakur wants no part of it and even before he meets his jailer’s stepsister. Nia is a healer with a beautiful soul.
Nia has a tragic family history. She has not only lost her dad and mom but also her stepfather too. She is left in the care of her evil stepbrother Brunt. Her life starts to feel hopeful after meeting and tending her brother’s newest acquired fighter.
They have a heck of a journey to get free so they can just live as a couple in love. Even if they do get free they have to get out of the desert lands and back to his forest home to be safe. His people will help protect them if they can only get there.
I have been enamored with these Monster Mate Hunt books from the very first one. Which is really something since I had reached Orc burnout at that point. But this is Ava Ross and I've never read anything by her that I didn't love. So I read the first one as was hooked. I got deeper addicted with each new Mate Hunt. I've enjoyed them all but OMG this one took me deeper into that world! Nia and Dakur are so wonderful. I felt everything reading this amazing book. I am still feeling deep emotions after finishing it. The characters are so rich and so deep. The world Ava has created feels so real. The story...well you just have to read it to understand the depth and beauty to it. And now I can't wait for Orc's Taming! Turren has already stolen a piece of my heart.
Nia and Dakur's story
What an amazing love story. Nia has suffered só much in her life, She Lost her parentes, Mother and stepfather on a fire and almost died too. Even surviving, She was burned in her face and neck and everybody on her village were mean to her about it calling her a monster. Her stepbrother was the worst, he mistred her, and made her his salve. He even offers her to a brunch of his powerfull friends in an auction while making her watch Dakur figth in his out. I loved Dakur he is amazing and treats her like a godess. She is a kind soul and a healer and he is an Orc lord with the most amazing pet ever! Great story. Can't wait for the mate hunt!
“Never feel your scars are unsightly. They’re a symbol of strength and perseverance.”
Nia has been stuck under her step brother's control for years, but that doesn't mean she's accepted her lot in life.
Dakur is all too aware of the trap he has fallen in to, but he's a capable Orc, determined not just to escape, but create a turning point in how own life and others.
This done in one story really highlights how we consciously work towards our futures, the things we actively do to prepare ourselves for a better life, as well as the ways one person can enable another to make a difficult step forward.
This is a standalone story, but you'll appreciate it more if you read the previous book. This is like its continuation.
Anyway, I, for one, am glad that Dakur is alive. His journey is, as his mother has predicted, a difficult one. There were times when there seemed to be no hope, bordering on desperation. And there were times when hope seemed to be all gone. Don't worry; it still has a happy ending. But you'll have to experience the sadness first before they find their happiness.
I loved the epilogue. We got to meet the other MCs from the previous books in the series, and I am looking forward to the next one.
Nia hides a heart of gold. She cannot do much but she does as much as she can to heal and, if possible, free those who her step-brother keeps caged. She has long learned to harden her heart as there is no hope of escape for her but that is until an Orc crashes through her defences. Dakur has been betrayed and his world changed in a moment. He is now the “property” of a very cruel human male who wants to turn him into a gladiator. His life is now dark as ge is forced to fight but there is also light despite all this. The only light, his mate, Nia. He cannot allow her to stay in danger so the only outcome is that they must try to escape. Can they reach freedom together?
This was the most instant of insta-loves I’ve read within this story. And after all Nia’s been through, you’d think it’s take longer for her to trust and warm up to someone. But a few days after meeting, when they can only spend maybe an hour together, they’re already saying I love and planning to escape together.
Nia is a healer and that’s how she meets Dakur in the dungeon fighting pits. When her evil stepbrother finds they’re getting close, he plans to auction her off to the highest bidder and to the most advantageous parter, for him.
I wish we got more time with Nia and Dakur getting to know each other
Nia has suffered loss of family and the cruelty of her stepbrother. Hard working but also cares for anyone or thing that is hurt.
Dakur was betrayed, knocked out and sold. He awakens to being chained in an underground cell. Then Nia comes in and his pendant flares. Mate.
This story has well described locations and rich characters to make you feel a part of the story. Ava also adds danger, healing, steam and a friend shows up. And every time you think you know what's going to happen next, Ava throws in another plot twist. This is a very satisfying read and so hard to put down.
Oh how much I loved this book!! Dakur was captured and imprisoned to fight in a gladiator ring against his will. His capture was a vicious, cruel human who forced his sister to heal the captured animals so he could force them to fight over and over again to increase his wealth. But when Nia went to tend to the injured Orc something happened, his emblem lit up like a dark cell and he had found his mate! Nia and Dakur faced so many obstacles until they could start living together. She was so tortured but determined and was the perfect mate for Dakur. I loved it!
Love Ava Ross’s books, especially the ones in the Monster Mate Hunt series. Nia is basically her step brother’s property. He plans to auction her off eventually but in the meantime use her as free labor at his fight arena. One day Nua is sent to heal a new monster, an orc! She falls for Dakur and they plan their escape, but her nasty step-brother follows. Of course, good wins, and the new couple makes it back to orc territory with the side of another orc clan and the rock people. Ross knows how to build an amazing new world with great characters and a sweet HEA.
Dakur is the Orc I've been waiting for and Ava did not disappoint. Since he went missing there was only one female who knew what his future held.
Dakur and Nia are brought together not solely by fate but at the hands of a despicable man. A man with no morals who despite being a lead in their story deserves everything that came his way.
Finding your soul mate in the deepest darkest pits imaginable is the only saving grace that these two wonderful characters have going for them.
This is another engaging story for the series and I loved seeing Dakur and Nia together. Both of them are in a bad situation but neither just accepted it. Dakur was amazing and treated her like she was his world. Nia was a healer but also just a wonderful gal and I was thrilled she got her HEA. Expect to get caught up in the action, danger, suspense, twists, adventure, drama and steamy romance for wonderful characters, in this story of love and hope :D
This one was great; the best in the series so far - & by far. I was a little [puke] at the insta-love on Nia's part this time for whatever reason, but under the circumstances i guess i get it. I really loved how this book played off of book #3 happenings; you knew what was going to happen before it happened, but it was incredibly satisfying nonetheless. The plot was on point this time too, which always helps.
Nia and Dakar
This is a very good, well written, Orc/Human romance with lots of action and adventure. The characters are interesting, lovable, and well developed. There is plenty of heat. Mia has been controlled by her cruel stepbrother for most of her life. Dakar was captured near his clan then moved far away to fight in the arena of Mia’s stepbrother. Read and learn how Nia and Dakar find each other and escape.
I want to love these so much, I try so hard to get through them because the world is so friggin' cool--but I always find myself so uninterested in the characters. They just feel so flat.
If you've made it this far into them--obviously you're a fan, and that's great. But for future reference, I need to leave this review for myself, because bish--do you really want to struggle through these again?
Chain, Chain, Chain
We now know what really happened to Dakur, the caedos of the Orcs who live in the forest, and it’s quite a tale. Waking to find himself injured and chained, he meets Nia, a healer, and his pendant glows. This is full of passion, danger, and the developing relationship between Dakur and Nia.
Nia and Dakur
Sweet story of kidnapped orc, shared trauma, tradegy. Nia is a beautiful soul, losing her parents and step parent, suppressed by her brother. She finds Dakur and sees the possibility of a new, fulfilled life ahead. The road would not be easy in the least but opens her eyes to what unconditional love with no strings attached. Sweet love story.
These two were the most romantic of all of the heroes and heroines in this series. I liked how Dakur used Nia's name constantly, the nicknames the other orcs tend to use in the previous books were a bit overdone. They were an adorable couple. I liked Veegar very much and I kind of hoped he would go with our main characters.
Orc’s Captive
Loved it. I think the series gets better with each book. Nia and Durik were both held captive by Nia’s stepbrother. After a rough journey, they escape together and join the found family and other couples throughout the series. I love how each book has their own unique story but they all interconnect. Narration was fantastic.
