Life's Too Short: A Memoir

Rate this book
A raw, heartfelt memoir from Darius Rucker, the three-time Grammy Award–winning, Diamond-selling lead singer of Hootie & the Blowfish and Country music sensation—told through the remarkable stories of the music that coursed through his life.

In 1986 Darius Rucker cofounded Hootie & The Blowfish at the University of South Carolina. What began as a party band playing frat houses and dive bars quickly became a global pop rock phenomenon through their multiplatinum-selling debut album, cracked rear view, which featured era-defining hit songs like “Only Wanna Be with You,” “Let Her Cry,” and “Hold My Hand.” Later, Darius would chart a pioneering path as a solo country music artist, with classic anthems like “Wagon Wheel” and “Alright.”

Nearly forty years after the band’s formation, Darius tells his remarkable story through the lens of the songs that shaped him—from Al Green, Stevie Wonder, and KISS to Lou Reed, Billy Joel, Nanci Griffith, and so many more.

Set against the soundtrack of his life, Darius recounts his childhood as the son of a single mother in Charleston, South Carolina. He traces the unlikely ascent of his band and shares wild tales of life on the road—but he also faces his missteps, defeats, and demons. As moving as it is entertaining, Life’s Too Short is a timeless book about a man and his music.

I have to say the album cracked rest view was an essential part of my teenage years. I was 14 when that album came out and I was just discovering what I liked listening to and just started buying my own CDS. This album was pretty pivotal in my life. I remember playing it constantly. So I was excited to read how Hootie And The Blowfish got started.

I really liked this memoir. It wasn’t super slow like most memoirs start out. The first chapter is about how he almost died swimming with Woody Harrelson, and after that we are off to the races. Super entertaining.

I know I’m super naive but I didn’t realize how much Darius and the band was into drugs. Never even crossed my mind, but they went super hard as one roadie put it, they party harder than the Rolling Stones and it’s non stop. Interesting part of the memoir.

I also didn’t realize David Letterman pretty much launched their career overnight. Crazy how one moment changed their life forever.

All in all a great success story and some funny moments throughout. While I wished he had touched on his personal family stories more, this was still really good. 4 and a half stars.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️+++ STARS!!!

I literally could have kept on reading had there been more pages. Darius Rucker had my heart before, but after reading this book, it’s on a whole different level. I will never forget back in 1994-95 when I first heard Hootie & The Blowfish break out on the scene. Darius has a very unique and distinct voice and it stopped me dead in my “dial turning.” You young folks don’t know nothing bout that. Lol.

His life though, I hardly knew anything about. Living in Charleston myself it was amazing to hear him talk about where he was born, raised and still lives to this day. His beginning was nothing glamorous that’s for sure. Growing up in the projects, raised by a single mom and enduring deep wounds left by a Father that didn’t want to spend anytime around him until He made it, only wanting monetary things from him. I love how Darius told him no and wouldn’t help him in his frivolity. Darius broke the dam in me as I listened to the chapter titled Big Poppa. So many of the same questions that went through his head, went through mine about my Dad.

“What is wrong with me? Why doesn’t my Dad want me in his life?”

I’ve come a long way in healing but the sting never completely goes away. It lies dormant until the next trigger and then it’s freshly brought to the top like an open wound. Big ugly tears this chapter brought.

Darius’ journey into HATBF fame, the drugs (copious amounts), David Letterman making them a household name and setting them on the track for stardom- was simply fascinating. This was my era. All the singers mentioned and stories related to them made me feel transported back to that time and it was spectacular! So much life changing music fresh on the scene and to this day no artist has been able to duplicate that’s felt quite like this particular decade in music.

I identify so much with Darius. Lover of all kinds of music and genres. Very eclectic taste. I’ll never forget when he decided to do country music. I was like wow! Talk about elevated to the next level. How could the same man sing a different genre of music and sound totally different. That’s just Darius. He’s talented like that.

But even in all that he brought it back to reality back in 2005 - “I sound miles away from Hootie. I love that, but remember, Not only am I a country singer now, I’m also still Black.” Darius shares his experience and struggles breaking into a predominantly white genre of music which is funny to think about because country music at its origin started with Black people.

I love the part of his album hitting #1 and the moment surrounding it. “Despite all the doubts, grumblings and racism - I know I’ll have a chance. My country music career might actually work.”

Believe me when I say that he paved the way for country artists today because this man faced a lot of racism. He did during Hootie days and more so in country music back in 2005. He was the First solo Black country artist to have a #1 music record since Charley Pride sang Night games in 1983 - 25 years ago in 2008. He is incredible. I breathed this book in with all my soul. Definitely a top read of the year and one that I will treasure.

I loved listening to Hootie and the Blowfish growing up, and I enjoy Darius Rucker’s country music as well, so I was excited to get to his memoir. It was interesting seeing his life and how he got his start with Hootie as well as in country music. It was fast paced and fun, but also had emotion and some serious topics. Darius is a fast talker which I appreciate. I slowed the book down a little bit compared to my normal listening speed, but he does a great job narrating.

I’m pretty floored by Darius Rucker’s memoir, Life’s too Short. This is one of the most honest and sincere memoirs I’ve read (well listened to). I binged this audiobook in a few hours and I even slowed it down from my usual speed and hit rewind a few times.

I remember loving Hootie and the Blowfish’s songs in the 90’s and 2000’s. Hearing the stories behind the songs and the band were both interesting and reminiscent of my high school days.

Darius talks about his early life with his single mother and siblings, his absent father, his near drowning and subsequent saving by close friend Woody Harrelson, his drug and alcohol use along with the ultimatum from his wife that saved his life (for a second time) and his rise to fame along with all the highs and lows that followed. His voice and storytelling are gripping. His accomplishments and improbable rise as a black country artist are stunning. I highly enjoyed and recommend this book. 5 ⭐️’s

Audiobook for me on this one. I always enjoy when people the subject of the book self narrates. Brings an authenticity to the experience.

I found this to be a genuine account with no attempts to soften the bands or Rucker’s true story.

Enjoyable, highly recommended.

As a longtime Hootie and the Blowfish fan, I knew I had to read Darius Rucker's memoir Life's Too Short. This was both a funny and heartbreaking look at Rucker's past and present, telling the story of how the band came to be and his solo career after that. I am not naive, and I know celebs drink and use drugs, but I was truly shocked by the things Rucker and his band got up to. All the drinking, drugs, and women you can imagine plus more, and the funny thing is, I would never have pegged him for that type of person. So, needless to say, this memoir really opened my eyes to what he was like and reinforced the thought that you can't judge a book by its cover.

I listened to the audiobook which he narrates, and I have to say it was a little strange. I'm not sure if it is the way he normally speaks but at times he was tough to understand. Not the best audio I have ever listened to, but I love it when the author narrates their memoir so I can't complain too much. I feel like I learned so much about Rucker's career and life in this book, and I absolutely loved it. He made me laugh and cry in equal measure, and I am still thinking about what he said about his mom... Life's Too Short is for you if want to learn more about this man both outside and inside of his career.

Life's Too Short - Darius Rucker

Darius Rucker not only is one of the members of legendary pop group Hootie and the Blowfish, but he also made his mark as a songwriter and singer in Country music. The doors he opened in the face of adversity after a tragic upbringing with his brother is inconceivable. The respect I have even more for this man after hearing his testimony!!!!! I love to hear people's journey and process of healing, so this was no exception. I was estatic to learn the emotions and stories behind the lyrics. The man behind the guitar, behind the voice is inspiring, an overcomer, and pure heart.

Interesting reading about his rise to fame and the people he met along the way. I think I was most surprised by his friendship with Woody Harrelson.

Darius Rucker’s book, “Life’s Too Short”, had me scratching my head. If life is too short, why waste it on drugs, pot and alcohol?

This book made me sad. Before reading it I was a big Hootie & the Blowfish fan. I remember their songs in the 90’s, some of them included in the soundtrack of my life.

I’ve never seen Hootie & the Blowfish live in concert before and I was planning to see them for the first time in a few months. I wanted to read Darius Rucker’s book before seeing the show. Actually I wanted to listen to the audiobook because I love Darius’s voice when he sings.

But listening to this book was a harsh dose of reality. It made me realize that the problem with idolizing people is that they often have more flaws than ourselves. The person I idolized is a facade. I was turned off and disappointed from the very beginning in chapter one. I didn’t like hearing about the amount of alcohol, pot and drugs that were consumed. Even one of the roadies said he’s never seen any band party more than Hootie & the Blowfish. Darius seems to recognize that wasn’t meant as a compliment but it doesn’t seem to change anything. There were so many references to drugs it was mind numbing. And that’s on top of the all day drinking starting with beers at breakfast and continuing with more beers and Jim Beam all day long.

Darius was arrested in February 2024 for drug possession. This doesn’t surprise me. I feel like he was likely stoned or on some type of substance writing this book. I also think he was under the influence doing the audiobook. He comes across as slurring his speech. And the book can often seem like it’s rambling or wandering aimlessly without direction.

This book was a bust for me. I was hoping I would enjoy it as much as Dave Grohl’s book, but instead it was more reminiscent of Matthew Perry’s book.

When summer hits I usually have a string of memoirs going and this one was one of the best ones I have listened to!!!! What woman in their 40's did not have Hootie and the Blowfish as a part of their growing up years!?!?!

Audiobook narrated by Darius, so good! I loved hearing the whole backstory of how they came together, how they got their big start and band life along the way. Super surprised(not sure why in this industry LOL) at the amount of drugs they did and still managed success, crazy! The book was quite the in depth look at his bond with music and how it moves him to be who he is as a muscian and song writer. Otherwise there really wasn't any other personal info outside of the fact that he has a few children and a wife(now ex), a mother he adored but lost too early and a father whom he only spoke to a few times. Read this for his life in music. He is so honest!!

I went to school at Univ of SC just a couple years behind H&tB. They were a well-known local party band at that time - the celebrity came a few years later.
I was at home one night - a newlywed living in Champaign, Illinois. Far from home and achingly homesick. That night the guys made their TV debut on Letterman and I LOST MY MIND. It was the salve I needed for my Carolina Homesick soul.
I was bound to love this book because these guys are “my guys” since I have “known” them for my entire adult life, starting at age 18. I thought I knew everything about them.
I did not.
Darius Rucker’s story about his time with actor Woody Harrelson, early in the book, knocked me over. I won’t spoil it here; suffice it to say I was stunned and shocked and ultimately - grateful.
Later in the book, I found myself thinking of Darius differently, as he described his drug use. That surprised me too - how can you keep such a grueling, demanding schedule in such a condition?
I have tickets to see H&tB this summer and I can’t wait. As an avid fan, I already know a lot about their songs. This book tells me more about the band, and DR. A raw, sincere, no-sugarcoating memoir that pulls no punches.
Even if you’re not a fan or never got into Hootie or don’t care about country music, check it out. There’s something in there for you. Love, loss, obsession, grit. You’ll love it.

Nearly 40 years into his illustrious career, Darius tells the story of his life through the music that made him, including songs by everyone from Frank Sinatra and Stevie Wonder to R.E.M., KISS, Prince and, of course, his own music with Hootie and as a solo artist. He recounts the unlikely ascent of his band and wild tales of his road-hardened life--one filled with stumbles, missteps and battles with demons, but ultimately resulting in triumph.

💭 T H O U G H T S

I was quite young when Hootie & the Blowfish burst onto the scene in the early 90s, however, I became a fan of Darius' music when he embarked on a solo venture in the country music genre. He has never hidden the fact he lived a hard life on the the road, I just never knew how hard until reading this book.

Each chapter is titled with a song that inspired his life and career, which was a really creative way to structure the book. It could have made even better if he'd included song or a few lines of lyrics with each. A few of the highlights for me were learning about his relationship with his mom, how music was always such a huge part of his life, the ironic way they came up with the band name, and just learning more the stories behind the songs.

I chose to listen to the audiobook, which Darius read himself, and it added another layer to his story. It does get a tad repetitive at times, as he circles back to topics he has already covered earlier on. As mentioned above, it just would have taken the listening experience to the next level if there has been some singing included.

Overall, Life's Too Short was an enjoyable listen, and I learned more about a singer I knew very little about previously. It definitely made me want to check out more of the band's music and listen to his country stuff as well. If you're a fan, you'll like enjoy hearing his story.

Kirkus: "Unexceptional, as rock memoirs go, but something for the fans." ...for starters, how is anyone not a fan?

Overall I loved so many of the anecdotes - I kept sharing them with my partner. I could have done with a bit less on his childhood and more on his country music career.

I really wish the flow, structure, and writing were better. Someone tell Darius to call me for book two - I'd ghostwrite my ass off for him.

Listened to the audiobook, narrated by Darius.

Great read!

This was such a heartwarming and transparent story! Darius shares his and the group’s experiences in a way that makes you feel as if you’re sitting there talking to him, and I LOVE those types of memoirs. As a South Carolina native and University of South Carolina graduate (attended right behind them), it was so great to hear about the successes of the band from my alma mater. And I smiled all through the David Letterman, Sinatra and Al Green stories. What a great read!

It was really weird that the book ended in 2017 when it was published this year in 2024, so the new tour and album with the band was never discussed. Darius did A LOT of drugs and alcohol, and he constantly mentioned this throughout the book, but still overall I felt that a lot from his life was glossed over. I did enjoying hearing how the band first got together. Another member of Hootie put out a book two years ago, so I may read that one too to see how their accounts differ.

This is an entertaining account of Darius' life and career. Apart from him having a very distinctive voice, he was, and is, first and foremost a music lover (like so many of us). It was interesting to read about his musical interests growing up, and his fanboy excitement when he got to meet and sing with some of them after the band's success. One fact he divulged, which I was surprised to learn, is that they were a hard partying band. One aged roadie was shocked, and told Darius they were even worse than Led Zeppelin, implying that even they took a break. Worth a read if you are a fan!

One of the best possible voices for an audiobook. Has a gravel-ly, southern sound that makes you feel like you’re in the mid 90’s. Loved learning about his life, the band, and transition to solo country artist.

It was so fun learning about Darius, Hootie, and the Blowfish in a chronological order! As both a country fan and a 90s baby, Darius' country career and Hootie and the Blowfish's songs are embedded in my DNA.

Darius is a complex man that has overcome a lot. His deep love/obsession of music is a through-line throughout his life that has kept him anchored; I appreciate his love of all different genres!

Overall an enjoyable, easy, and emotional read! I only wanna be with youuuu🎶

Honestly, it's kind of disappointing. Some of it is interesting, the beginning definitely had me gripped but after that it really just sort of went downhill. Very sad story about Darius' brother and his drug addiction, but the whole rest of the book he talks about all the drugs he did himself. I sort of expected an "aha!" moment where things turn around, and it just sort of fell flat. I do love how he talks about his mama, that was very sweet.

Great autobiography. I listened to the audio book, read by Darius himself, which is the best way to read an autobiography. It took me a while to get through it because he was inspiring me to listen to music while listening to the book. So I had to switch back and forth between the book and the music he inspired me to listen to- which by the way wasn’t just his music. I love Darius and loved listening to his story. My only disappointment is that he didn’t come to realize the negative impact of all of his drinking and drugging, other than quitting cocaine and ecstasy for his wife Beth. But he’s still drinking liters of Jim Beam and smoking tons of pot. It’s amazing he’s still alive with all of the partying. All that aside, I’m even more excited to go see him and the band at the end of this month!

Quick listen. I consider pre work before going to see Darius/ Hootie next month. I have always been a fan. This confirmed. I really enjoyed the portion on his country career. He had some serious hard rock and roll living . I went and watched some of clips on you tube that he referenced in book like at cmas. Singing with Adele. Being invited by Taylor swift to sing at one of her concerts. David letterman. Fun deep dive.

Amazing!!!

This book is so amazing. I love the way he uses music that has influenced him for each chapter. I would listen to the song he titled each chapter, after reading each chapter. So well done. You hear the songs a little differently with the back stories he provides. I have been a huge Hootie and the Blowfish fan, but an even bigger fan of Ratios Tucker at he country singer. I would recommend this book to any fan, but also to anyone who enjoys well told stories. Amazing!

Excellent audio book read by Darius! I was in college at The University of South Carolina when Darius and his band Hootie and the Blowfish got their start and became widely popular. I loved his recounting of all the familiar places around Columbia and how they contributed to the bands success.

Darius pours his heart out in his memoir and holds back little. He talks about what it was like growing up in Charleston to a single mother with limited income but lots of love for all of her children. As Darius moves to the college scene he explains how he met each band mate and how the name came about. He doesn’t sugar coat his intense relationship with drugs and alcohol and the part it played in many of his life choices. He takes the reader on an adventure reliving the days of the band and his venture into country music which is still going strong.

If you loved Hootie and the Blowfish’s music and/or Darius Ruckers amazing country music definitely check this one out. It’s a hell of a book!!!

Darius is an icon as is Hottie and the Blowfish in Columbia, SC. Even though we lived here during the times of the book we did not listen nor pay attention to their songs an eventually to their lucky break with David Letterman. All that being said Darius has an amazing voice and his Christmas CD is one of our favorites. And the fact that an African American man can be a star in Country music is remarkable. What is not remarkable is the story of a life that never quite figured it out. Very sad and depressing to some degree. He certainly was and is a very likable guy it appears, but the personal life as he is very transparent about in the book leaves a lot to be desired. It is a great story of a mother that truly worked herself to the bone raising her kids while an absent father stood by and did nothing. Amazing but in a very depressing sort of way.

Based on the content, the ghost writer didn't have a lot to work with.

Basically he "feels" music and does A LOT of drugs. (There is no sobriety story, so no reason to believe he is sober. Apparently he gave up 'shrooms, acid, ectasy, and cocaine in an instant to get his own bus and now only drinks and is high all the time.)

There is nothing in this book you can't find from a quick google search.

He (ghost writer) keeps talking about living the dream and the pain of having an absentee father, but doesn't talk about the costs of that dream and his life on the road (which he loves) on his own children (whom he also loves).

I look forward to hearing a more cogent story in the future, but as he says/sings, Life's Too Short. Don't waste your time on this.
