***ARC REVIEW***
This book is promoted as a gender swap re-telling of «The Little Mermaid.»
Eribelle grows up under the strict ministrations of an overprotective father. When she steals his boat to run away and pursue a life of art, shit goes terribly wrong.
Axton is an esteemed member of the royal merfolk guard. But when he ends up rescuing a woman from a shipwreck, and someone makes it look like he killed her instead, his whole life is upended.
I’ve been racking my brain to try and stay constructive, so let’s say this: If you want a story of sexual tension, too-good-to-be-true coitus, and you don’t care about consistency - welcome. You’ve come to the right place.
But if you prefer more meat on the bone (pun halfway intended), then this book is sadly just a mess of tropes, underdeveloped characters, and confusing or underplayed plot events.
And I’m sorry to be so harsh, but if I hadn’t viewed this book as a mission to be accomplished, I’would’ve DNFed before the halfway point.
As for a RETELLING of an original fairytale, I’m not sure how I feel. The first 80% of the book feels like any other paranormal fantasy romance, until the end battle, which resembles the Disney version of “Little Mermaid” somewhat.
Now, don’t get me wrong, I much prefer when the story takes a new turn and doesn’t slavishly follow the original, but then this - doesn’t leave many of the original elements. I’d say it was “inspired by” rather than a “retelling of.”
Maybe I’m forgetting the genre here, and taking this book too seriously (I tend to do that), but with the promises made in the promotion, this book does not deliver for me.
