A pair of enchanted glass slippers. A dark and dangerous queen. And the fate of a kingdom hangs in the balance.
Ella Rose Tremaine lives a life of drudgery as a servant in her own home, catering to the whims of her stepmother and stepsisters. All she wants is a life to call her own, but with no way out, she’s trapped. Even when the royal ball is announced, she is forbidden to attend.
Left alone on the night of the ball, a mysterious package arrives addressed to her. Inside, a pair of beautiful glass slippers. When she puts them on, she’s transformed and whisked off to the ball by none other than her fairy godmother—but with a warning. Remove the slippers before the last stroke of midnight to break the spell and all will be as it was before.
Lost in the magic of the evening while dancing with a handsome stranger, she is heedless of her fairy godmother’s warning. With the last strike of midnight, she is transported to the Christmas realm of Rovenheim.
Her arrival garners the attention of a dangerous queen determined to have the slippers for herself. She’ll stop at nothing to get them by issuing an ultimatum—bring her the slippers or she’ll destroy the enchanted realm and the Spirit of Christmas itself.
With time running out, Ella embarks on a perilous journey through the mystical realm on a quest to save it. She must embrace her destiny and discover the power of love and magic. But will it be enough to overcome the darkness that threatens to consume them all?

This sweet and heartwarming story was the perfect start to my holiday season reading!
Once Upon a Midnight Clear is the first story in the Enchanted Realms series of fairytale retellings by Michelle Miles. Ella is living a life of drudgery and despair, bullied by her awful stepfamily. A kindly fairy godmother outfits her in a beautiful gown and glass slippers and whisks her away to a ball, where Ella meets a handsome stranger. And from there the familiar story takes a very different path, leading to a winter wonderland with an evil queen, a magical castle, and even pirates.
Ella is very much a timid damsel in distress, but her kindness and compassion help her to find moments of joy amid the despair. This is a story about hope and resilience, about finding the place where you belong, and knowing your own worth.
There's no spice aside from kissing, but plenty of "knee melting" romance and swoon-worthy moments. Ella's journey is not only about finding love, but truly believing that she is worthy of it.
The warmth and joy of Christmas wraps around this story like a beautiful bow, and makes it an especially magical December read, however the story will enchant your heart no matter the season.
This was a charming reimagining of Cinderella. The main character, Ella, is very kind, hard working, but also unable to see past her own situation. She comes across as very helpless, despite being selfless and giving. The writing style of this book was pretty simple, so it was easy to read. Definitely didn't require looking up any vocabulary or anything like that. I did enjoy the overall story, and how the glass slippers came into play for the overall plot. I do wish that the characters made actual plans instead of flying by the seat of their pants without any forethought to consequences. I was not at all understanding of the prologue or epilogue, and not sure how it tied into the actual story or plot. It confused me and I wish there would have been more explanation to it. But, it didn't take away from the main story at all, just didn't add anything.
Overall, cute story, and I liked how it tied the classic story of Cinderella to Christmas and the holidays. This is a zero spice story, more of a feel good reimagining of Cinderella. There was kissing involved.

2.5 stars. my finishing thoughts. Way to much unnecessary angst. It irked me so, so much the contrived miscommunication. what I wanted was for her to suck it up and go for it. She just faced off against an evil fairy she couldn't take a chance? Despite my irritation with the ending, for the most part I enjoyed this book. The prologue and epilogue were not necessary. I've encountered books where the story is being told to a secondary character, happens all the time. But the epilogue is set up like the little girl is suppose to be someone important later. The story is a blend of Cinderella and the Wizard of Oz. which I did not mind. Having Ella being whisked away at midnight was an interesting twist. And Oz in this case being the embodiment of the North pole was nice. We don't get a lot of setting description, I felt like I knew more about what the character is wearing as opposed to where they were. But this wasn't a deal breaker for me. Noella's wardrobe is on brand, though. Overall the plot was pretty engaging. I read it fairly quickly, and as I said. I enjoyed the premise. This is one of those fluffy novels you read when you don't want to think to hard. When you just want romance and a low key adventure. So, Recommended? sure Buy/Borrow? Borrow
DNF for me, about a third of the way through. I had picked up the Kindle copy at some point as a freebie, and found the audio on Hoopla. The writing was just ... I don't know, it felt very basic and armature (and I'm not saying I could do better, but there are so many wonderful books out there). Like "her heart skipped into a happy beat and she had an overwhelming feeling of joy" and a bit later "his eyes sparkled with affection and happiness, filling her heart with warmth and joy" ... unfortunately it was not bringing ME joy. I was listening to the audiobook (narrated by the author) which I actually think made it even worse (some mispronunciations driving me crazy ... FOILage/foliage, cravat with the emphasis on the start? CRA-vet?). Apparently I was making faces because my son broke in and asked "are you listening to an audiobook? It must be bad!" after watching me.
Prologue was a set up to tell the story - The first few chapters were pretty much basic Cinderella (although Stepmother wants a newspaper. The "fairy godmother" Noella ... and is her son the prince? Then the glass slippers transport Ella into a fairy realm/Rovenheim where there's a wicked witch who wants the shoes (feeling a little "Wizard of Oz" with this, a little SnowWhite as she looks into her dark magic mirror asking it about magic in the land" ...
All third person - focusing on a few different characters. Past tense.
The title/cover were appealing, but I didn't feel like I could push through ...
Ella is a housemaid in her own home, subject to the demands of her verbally abusive stepmother and stepsisters. When a royal ball is announced, her stepmother forbids her to attend, but Ella receives a mysterious package containing glass slippers, then finds herself escorted to the royal ball by her fairy godmother. While the story unfolds as a traditional Cinderella retelling, when Ella misses her midnight deadline, she is transported to the forever-Christmas land of Rovenheim. Miles’ novel leans on classic fairy tale elements but enchants them with the magic of Christmas to create a charming princess adventure, complete with an evil queen. Noella, the fairy godmother, shines as her elegant and sassy fairy godmother and Ella’s kind-heartedness embodies the Christmas spirit that weaves throughout the story. Once Upon a Midnight Clear is an in-front-of-the-fireplace sweet romance that will warm your heart.
This is marketed as a retelling of Cinderella, but in truth is a combination of maybe a few fairy tales.
The pros: This book is a unique and fresh retelling and it's easy to read. The author's writing style is not complicated and the story is not over wrought purple prose. I appreciated that the author kept to simple writing and story telling. I also appreciated the sweetness of the story. The MC at times came off as helpless, but maybe some of us really are as helpless as we feel. I enjoyed it and would certainly read it again.
The Cons: The Prologue and Epilogue were confusing and I was at a loss on them. I wish that they fit more clearly into the overall story because honestly they did not seem to fit at all.

A pair of enchanted glass slippers. A dark and dangerous queen. And the fate of a kingdom hangs in the balance.
Ella Rose Tremaine lives as a servant in her own home, bound to her cruel stepmother and stepsisters. When a mysterious package arrives on the night of the royal ball, a pair of dazzling glass slippers, she’s swept into a night of magic and danger.
But when the clock strikes midnight, the spell shatters, and Ella is whisked away to the Christmas realm of Rovenheim, a world under threat from a ruthless queen who craves the power of the slippers. Now, to save the Spirit of Christmas itself, Ella must embark on a perilous journey through an enchanted world, where love and courage may be her greatest weapons.
A richly imagined Cinderella retelling filled with winter magic, dark enchantment, and romance.
I normally don’t read stories set around Christmas, even though it is my favorite season. However, the audio sample for this book pulled me in.
The first few chapters closely resembles the Disney version of Cinderella. But the similarities end the night at the Royal Christmas Ball when Ella meets and dances with a dashing young man, who isn’t the Prince. Of course, she’s first given the warning to remove the glass slippers before the stroke of midnight, but when she fails to do so, that’s when her adventure begins.
This is a sweet re-telling of the classic story while still retaining some aspects of the original. Even if you’re a fan of spicy romance stories like I am, this is still a great book to have and read.
I would label this a young adult reimagined fairytale. It is a unique and interesting twist on the Cinderella story. It begins In present day as Hilde tells a story to her young niece about some magical shoes. The rest of the book is the story of Ella and finding her prince. There is a little bit of mystery, some adventure, lots of magic and sweet romance. It is a clean, wholesome read that is charming and magical. I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
I do love a great fairytale retelling and this one’s just a wonderful read told with a twist or two. Ella is hardworking and at her stepmothers and stepsisters beck and call and is not allowed to the ball. Throw in some magic slippers and a fairy godmother and Ella is swept away by the magic and ends up transported to the Christmas realm of Rovenheim. World building is extraordinary, storyline is exciting, magical and captivating and our characters likeable and fascinating. I throughly enjoyed this and cannot wait to read the next book!
Unique. It was unique and different. A combination of Cinderella and the are Shoes. A story within a story. I was confused about the ending. It is a mystery what Hilde was actually inspiring or who she actually was. But other than that unclear ending it was very well written. I liked it because it was happy and inspiring. Plus Christmas. I love the joy in Christmas.

Ella has been a servant to her step mother and step sisters - until she meets Noelle, and is given a pair of glass slippers - but will they really change her life? Malvina really wants them back - and the evil queen will stop at nothing. Great characters, and a fun remake of Cinderella! Loved it!.

A Christmas version of the Cinderella fairytale. Darker than the original story and with more magic, it was an interesting and fun interpretation. However, I noticed several things that didn’t quite make sense to me, even knowing it was a fairytale. Perhaps that’s where some of the magic came in but it knocked the stars down for me.
First time author for me: and it was really good. I wasn’t sure about another retelling of Cinderella, but this one was different and kept me interested the whole time. Ella and Nicholas were great characters and very engaging. Noella was a fun distraction. I would recommend this book!
What a wonderful mixture of joyful fairy tales! A combination of Cinderella, the Wizard of Oz, and Father Christmas all wrapped of with a holiday bow 🎄☃️❣️ I highly recommend it ❣️
This book was such a cute story. It transports you into a fairy tale winter wonderland. You fall in love with the characters and the place. If you're looking for your Christmas spirit and a sweet love story, you'll find it in this book.
Needs more editing. The author has a penchant for leaving the verbs out of sentences. Very surface characters and plot. It's not a bad story; it's just not for me. (Also pertinent is that I am sitting in a 100°+ heatwave with a broken a/c while trying to read a book about Christmas...) DNF 51%
This was a sweet fairytale twist story. It was a mash up of Cinderella and Wizard of Oz with a Christmas theme, which I quite liked. It fit my mood reading at Disney World at Christmas. There was magic, other realms, adventurous quests, and sweet romance. The downside was a miscommunication between the main characters that was a complete eye roll. It also made the novel feel more juvenile.
Kinda cute, twisted fairy tale. Clean. Story weaves a riveting tale. Including glass slippers, a fairy godmother, and an evil sister. Along with the spirit of Christmas. Found it a good afternoon read while watching the snow fall.
I loved it. Every minute if it was a great adventure. I love fairy tale re-tellings that are clean and have a good ending. This met all the criteria, and more. Really enjoyed it.
This story felt like a Cinderella-Wizard of Oz-Snow white mix, which was fun. Once Elle left the ball the story became interesting. The prologue didn't add much to the story and the first few chapters was the same Cinderella story seen in any cheesy movie.
I liked the Christmas twist and the book was a fun adventure. That being said, once the protagonists headed to the wicked sorceress's castle the story could be smoothed out considerably. The story leaves the readers with questions about how the magic system works and what they were hoping to accomplish without a plan. The protagonists simply walked into danger, made mistakes, and then the fairy godmother popped up at convenient times to save them at every turn.
Audiobook review *** Being a newbie, the author did a decent job reading her own book. I've listened to professional voice actors that were terrible. Nonetheless, it sounded liked Michelle needed a pop filter and she wasn't acting at all. All of the characters had the same voice and it was simply read instead of acted out.
🌟 Once Upon A Midnight Clear is a Cinderella retelling that has been perfectly transformed into a cozy Christmas adventure!
These are a few of my favorite things about this book:
🎄 Chronicles of Narnia & Wizard of Oz Vibes
🎄 A Fairy Godmother who is as elegant as Zsa Zsa Gabor, and reminiscent of the Fairy Godmother in Julia Andrew's / Rodger's & Hammersetein's Cinderella
🎄 Protective Cinnamon Roll MMC
🎄 Cinderella's humility & generous heart being an embodiment of the true spirit of Christmas
☕ This unique retelling was as cozy as a cup of cocoa by the fire, it has the perfect blend of traditional Cinderella elements & Christmas wonderland fantasy swirled in to make a one of a kind fairytale!
🏔️ The world building was everything one could hope for in a portal fantasy; a world where it's always Christmas and the air swirls with snowflakes and the wonder of the Christmas season all year round.
👠 I loved the way the glass slippers were a focal point throughout the entire story and not just a means for Ella to reach her happily ever after, but something special & meaningful.
🍪 The romance between Ella & the dashing Prince Nicholas was as sweet as a Christmas cookie! I loved that he wasn't a pampered prince but was rather rugged & down to earth.. Nicholas & Ella's personalities complemented each other perfectly!
🎀 Noella, the dramatically elegant Fairy Godmother, was my favorite character! She was sassy, glamorous, and will make you laugh as she pops in & out of the story, sometimes as a harbinger of hope, other times bringing chaos, doing so with flair & a hair flip!
🎁 I loved everything about this Christmas Fairytale & would highly recommend it! This would make a perfect gift for anyone who loves fairytale retellings.
