Raised in the Arkansas River Valley, Karen McSpade grew up with a fishing pole in one hand and her trusty .410 shotgun in the other. Exploring the creeks and woods around her hometown while hunting with her father kept her “entertained and out of jail,” as her mom likes to say.
As a child, her most prized possessions were her books and her Michael Jackson album collection. These led her to a brief venture into breakdancing and poetry slamming before discovering her true passion, bringing stories and characters to life. Today, she focuses on the two things that still inspire her creativity—her love for food and dishing up mysteries with a dash of humor.
Karen’s novels feature compassionate and strong-willed leading ladies determined to uncover the truth and seek justice. She loves creating stories filled with mystery, romance, magic, and adventure that allow readers to join her characters on their journey, leaving behind the real world for a few hours at a time.
When she’s not writing, Karen’s favorite things are spending time with family, traveling, cooking, reading, gardening, and enjoying nature. She lives in Northwest Arkansas with her family and a very spoiled Wheaten Terrier who doubles as her writing assistant.
The search still goes on for Sam’s killer and whoever framed Sidney’s dad Jacob who is now out on bail. Jacob’s girlfriend Gillian seems to be missing too. Sidney and Ada Mae are working together to find the answers they need. But odd events are occurring. A pirate ghost tells Sidney that something major is heading their way. And there is some creature, an odd beast, roaming the beach at night. What is going on here? With so much happening, it is getting difficult to sort out the pieces! But as Sidney’s magical talents begin to strengthen, can she and Ada Mae solve this dilemma before Crystal Beach suffers the consequences? Will they find an answer as to why Sam was murdered? Will Crystal Beach’s chief of police and Sidney ever get back together? Or is John still angry over the planted evidence and Gillian’s weak, blundered confession that she planted it?
Quick read tons of action! This picks up directly after the events from A Grave Mistake. Sidney and her family and friends are both celebrating her dad’s being free from jail and trying to figure out who set him up and what the ultimate plan is. There are dire warnings all around especially from a powerful of odd ghost Admiral Avery. The magic is super strong and reactive so all the magical folk have to take care to cast wisely. All this adds up to a suspenseful and exciting read in the continuing adventures at Crystal Beach!! I received an ARC from the author. This is my voluntary and honest review.
I have to say I did not expect what was going on with Zoe. I also had not guessed issues with one of the relationships, and was feeling "About frickin' time!" on another one. The mystery continues.
Many Strange and Magical Happenings in Crystal Beach!
"Tangled in Magic" is Book 9 of A Crystal Beach Magic Mystery Series, written most outstandingly by Karen McSpade. Before reading this episode, be sure to read books 1-8 first. The Prequel, Dog Gone Troubles, can be received at the front of any if these books, by clicking on a link. The prequel occurs 4 or 5 years before book 1 of the series. Books 1-5 are one entire mystery, and Books 1-10 are a second complete series. These books are less than 100 pages each and are fast reads: thoroughly binge-reading ecstasy. This episode has many strange and magical occurrences in Crystal Beach, such as the continuing mystery as to who killed Savvy Sam Barlow, the Warlock Real Estate dealer if Mystic Dunes, a once totally empty development of houses that was filled to capacity almost overnight. There is also an old ghost that haunts the beach that takes Sidney and her cat Mojo on an underwater adventure to a bar that was wiped off the beach during a tsunami over a hundred years earlier when Crystal Beach was known by a different name. He warns Sidney of history repeating itself very soon. Mojo is a telepathically communicative cat, and this was a funny scene, because cats don't like getting wet, much less magical journeys underwater, even if he and Sidney's CAN breathe like on dry land. This scene kind if reminded me of that Disney magic of the 1960s movies. With this forewarning of history repeating itself, will Sidney be able to break the curse? Another strange occurrence is that everybody at Mystic Dunes seem to be in a witch's coven with an unknown "Head" to the group. They all seem to be previously connected to Sam Barlow, and all are suspects to his murder as far as Sidney is concerned. A fourth occurrences is that there seems to be a werewolf, or dog shape-shifter in Crystal Beach, and you will probably NEVER figure out who it is. Now that Sidney's dad, Jacob Grace, has been released from prison because of the missing key evidence, his girlfriend, Gillian, has gone missing. Ada-Mae, Sidney, Julia-Mae, and several other people, both those who have magical powers, as well as those who don't, create a spell to find out where Gillian is, hoping that she is not dead. This spell goes awry when Sidney touches the crystal bowl holding the spell, and gets sucked off/teleported to where Gillian is. What will Sidney find? This is, by far, my favorite episode yet. These books come out every week of two, and I look forward to episode 10's finale. I gave this episode 5 stars, but it deserves many, many more! This series would make a great Hallmark Movies and Mysteries series. I received an ARC and this is my honest review.
I did enjoy this book, especially as with book nine we are finally getting close to finding out what is happening, however I just wish the books in the series could have been longer. This ten book series is just one big mystery broken down into ten novellas ( I think it is about 90 pages each book), where things start to get interesting and then you have to wait for the next book, personal I think I would have preferred it as one book then you don't have to worry if you missed one as you definitely need to read them all and in order. In this book the witch craft is more prominent and the author had a lot of fun with it. I like the characters, especially learning more about Zoe. It will be interesting to see how the author wraps it all up. With her father out of jail due to the lack of evidence, Sidney would love to celebrate but with a killer still walking around free, her father's girlfriend missing and the pirate ghost warning of danger to come, Sidney will have to use her witchy powers to get to the bottom of the strange goings on at Crystal Beach. Especially if she wants to clear her father's name, keep her friends safe and stop the evil eternity one and for all. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Another page turning short fast read that has you pouring through to the end in one sitting. With Sydney's father, Jacob, out on bail, yet still a suspect, Sydney and Ada Mae are still searching for Sam's murderer. But things are getting stranger by the day. And we have the foreboding of a new pirate ghost, who warns Sydney of a major catastrophe coming and who can teleport her. Then there is the mysterious beast on the beach and a strange revelation from her best friend, Zoe. And what about the dark coven? What are they up to? And where is Jacob's girlfriend? He's worried because she is missing. This is an action packed, fast paced read that has so many threads. Can Sydney, with her growing magic abilities, Ada Mae and family untangle all the threads before it's too late for Crystal Beach and find who and why Sam Barlow was murdered? I can't wait for the next book in this serial. This is a fantastic series written like a serial that you just can't get enough of. You just can't put it down. I highly recommend the entire series. I received and ARC of this book but the opinions expressed here are strictly my own.
I’m having such fun with the Crystal Beach series. There are more strange happenings in Crystal Beach, from missing girlfriends to an unusual beast roaming the beach at nightfall. And there’s still a murderer out there waiting to be discovered. It’s all going to come to a head soon… but not just yet. The hard part about doing reviews for a cozy mystery is that I can’t really talk about much, even less than I would in a review for another genre. I won’t spoil the fun for any reader, but I have my suspicion, and the final book in this overlapping arc will soon give up the answers I’ve been waiting for.
If you love a well-written, quirky, fun, and odd cozy mystery, then I’d have no doubt that you’d love Tangled in Magic. Tensions are running high, magic is occurring just about everywhere, and the Mystic Dunes area of Crystal Beach holds the answers. I can’t wait to finally discover them all.
*I received an e-ARC of this novel from the author or the author's team via Booksprout, and I sincerely thank them for their trust. It is my choice to leave a review giving my personal opinion about this book.*
Jacob, Sidney's father, gets released from jail but is still under suspicion of killing Sam. Speaking of Sam, was he in the coven whose members are all residents of Mystic Cove? Gillian is missing. Does the coven have anything to do with her disappearance? Or did the big dog, that was roaming the beach the night before, have something to do with Gillian? The old salty ghost pirate invites Sidney to have a drink with him and he would explain a few things. He transported her and Mojo to his bar that he owns. Wait until you read about that adventure. LOL Do they find Gillian? What does the pirate mean by saying that something catastrophic has a way of repeating itself? Do they find Sam's killer? Look for the answers to these questions in this fast paced book.
I volunteered a honest review as I received an ARC copy of this book.
ARC reader - my honest review. Something serious is building in Crystal Beach! Sidney has had to move Maude to the parking lot at Grandma's retirement complex after John threatened to enforce parking laws. Her dad is out of jail, but Sam’s killer is still at large. Also, dad's girlfriend is missing so everyone spreads out to find her. Admiral Avery invites her for drinks in a very special location to warn of impending danger. A mysterious beast is spotted near the water. Teleportation and spells on the beach? What is this all leading up to? Will we finally find out the solution to the mystery? Not quite yet, but we are getting closer. There are more adventures to come, so we'll need to read the next book!
Continuing the intriguing story of Sidney and her cats in Crystal Beach. Mysterious happenings as Sidney's dad is still a murder suspect but another disappearance may hold the key to keeping him out of jail. Ghostly appearances and magical dilemmas keep Sidney on her toes. The reader also needs to be on their toes-this was one of the best in the series with tons of magic, character development, surprises (and drama!) packed inside a very readable plot. What in the world is the secret of Mystic Dunes? I am so involved in these novellas-I want to know all the details of everybody and every secret! Karen McSpade does NOT disappoint as she keeps the story moving with a shocking clue that will lead into book 10. I was given a copy-this is my own opinion.
Our heroine has her hands full with a big mystery confronting her and the town. None of the clues line up, but the consequences of failure are pretty high, so it is time for our heroine to dig deep.
This is book nine of the series, but it is written as a standalone. All the essential bits are covered early on.
This is a cozy mystery with lots of different paranormal types, plus a nice bit of magic. The story is well written and easy to read with an intriguing cast of characters. The plot is solid and all the different issues keep things moving at a good pace. Overall, this continues to be a fun series and I definitely look forward to the next book.
Highly recommended.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout for review purposes.
A fractured relationship with Chief Reece has Sidney looking for a new place to stay. Her father may be out of jail but if they don’t find proof of his innocence and catch the real killer his freedom will be temporary. She has already alienated close friends and now another is missing. It feels like things are building to a conclusion, and if the warning from the Admiral’s spirit is correct it’s not necessarily a good one!
Aarg! Another cliffhanger ending! Now I have to wait for the next book to see what comes next. Can’t wait! I received a free copy but my review is honest and voluntary.
TANGLED IN MAGIC is the ninth installment in the Crystal Beach Magic Mystery Series by Karen McSpade. These are witchy, engaging and fun short stories with quirky characters. Each story is short and easy to read in one sitting and each picks up where the previous one left off.
Sydney has been given an ominous prophecy about an impending catastrophe threatening Crystal Beach. But can she trust this old abd ghostly mariner?
I like that so much happens in these short stories without detracting from the flow. This time a frightening prophecy, a strange creature on the beach, missing girlfriend, even a broken romance. WOW!
With time running out, can Sidney cast a spell to save her family, the town she loves, and at the same time find a way back into John’s heart? Or is this witch destined to go under the waves with everyone?
Remember these are all short stories leading directly into the next story. Not your thing? In the future there should be a box set with all the stories, if you can wait that long. I recommend.this series to those who are fans of cozy, witchy mysteries!
I did receive an advanced copy from the author and the above is my freely given and honest review.
Sidney and Ada Mae search for answers to who killed Sam Barlow, now that Sidney's father is out of jail they still need to find the killer. Sidney's ghostly pirate friend warns her of a disaster that's coming that could destroy Crystal Beach. Meanwhile Sidney speaks to Jessie on Zoe's behalf trying to fix things for Zoe and despairs ever working things out with Sheriff John. Meanwhile her dad's girlfriend is missing and the whole group is working their magic to find her with surprising results. Great read!
Now, there's a twist I never saw coming! As other characters reveal more of their private lives, a new threat to Crystal Beach seems to emerge. Gillian, Jacob, and even Mojo are all experiencing even more out-of=the-ordinary events than the members of the witches' coven. Are those behind the new threat merely clueless, or are their actions deliberately malicious, and if so, what is their goal? In the Crystal Beach series, you'll find yourself rooting for Sidney ... even if you don't care for witches.
As the books go on, it's harder and harder to give a synopsis of the book because so much is happening now and it would be too easy to give something away. That being said, Book 9, Tangled in Magic, is a great new book in the series. I love the storyline and it's always fun when I new ghost shows up. You really can't get a better story than in this series. It's fun, the characters are interesting and relatable and there are cats!.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
What can I say about this series that I’ve not spray said. I really hope we get more books in the series, I’ve enjoyed it a lot. This is my first paranormal series or book and I’m totally into it. The writing is very good. The way Karen keeps you guessing and in the edge of your seat is so good I couldn’t put the book down. You’ll love the characters and they’re cats in the mix. One in particular is funny and helpful when trying to solve the mysteries of what’s happening in their little area of crystal beach. Fun read, easy read, great character building. Keep them coming.
Do you believe in magic? If not, then don’t move to Crystal Beach, Florida. The place is rife with it! And poor Sydney Grace - all of her friends seem to be upset with her. She’s left with the only older folks at the Shifting Sands Retirement Home for company.
There are strange things happening. Dark, ominous things. Will Sydney, her grandmother, and the others be able to protect each other and their little town?
I received an advance copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving this review.
All is still not well at Crystl Beach The celebration is on as Jacob has been released from jail, but when his girlfriend Gillian doen't show up there is concern. When she returns to her van Maude Syney witnesses something with huge animal tracks and the next morning her talking cat Mojo tells her there was a monster loose on the beach the night before. Add to this an encounter with an old pirate ghost and a drink at his long lost under sea bar and there are many strange goings on to solve. Disclaimer I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Tangled in Magic by Karen McSpade, Author So Good - So Good - So Good! I can't say it enough. One more book and it's over... again and hopefully not forever ♡ I think I've found my favorite character in this series and I hope he has more involvement in the final book. Each book in this series leaves you on a cliffhanger that you just need to keep reading. I have no clue how Karen is going to wrap this up. She has my mind going in so many possible directions. I adore the universe she has built here. I need more content. I need more novels. Such a good job. I applaud this series 👏
Sidney's on the outs with her maybe boyfriend John. He doesn't believe in magic and is upset she's interfering. Now her dad's girlfriend is missing and although John is out of jail it doesn't look good for him. Ghosts seem to be popping up to help her and give her info. Will she be able to figure out what's going on before evil hits? And where's her friend Zoe? Suspense and mystery build and build. Readers will nite their nails!!.

Just when you think you have a handle on the over all story, someone throws a wrench in your thoughts, and the whole structure topples over. These episodes are driving me nuts. Not only are there too many cliffhangers, the author keeps throwing magical bombs in randomly to cause even more chaos. The characters are all fun to read about, interesting, intelligent, and caring, and become more beloved by the episode. The plot is easily followed, and the premise is finding out who actually killed Sam and why. I do definitely recommend this episode and all the rest of them.
loyalties and betrayals seem tangled and twisted as it seems clear that multiple parties might have been involved in framing Sydney's father
the police chief shows a significant lack of backbone, and more than one supporting character evidences mixed loyalties as they reveal working to finger the innocent
can Sydney help get her father cleared of suspicions?
what other parties might find themselves enmeshed with the magical storms ahead?
Captivating happenings in this next book. Sidney's dad has been released from jail after being accused of killing Sam. Sidney is still dealing with Chief Reece rejecting her. Who is involved with the coven in Mystic Dunes? Are Rose and Rodney part of the coven and what's happening with Zoe? What was the ghost of Admiral Avery telling her about the lost town of Coral Point. I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Sidney was celebrating with Ada-Mae and the rest of the family at Shifting Sands Retirement Centre. Her father was unhappy as he had been accused of a crime he hadn’t committed the murder of Sam Barlow. Her cats were hiding from a monster who howled . Gillian her dads girlfriend goes missing. There is a lot of magic and mayhem in the read to make this very intriguing. I am on the ARC team and leave a honest review. I recommend this book to other readers.
Lots of plot twists and some new characters with powers that you just can’t imagine. The book moves fast and sets you up for the next story. Meanwhile the love story intertwined is on shaky ground or has it hit the rocks? Great series. Highly recommended especially for this time of year when other activities interfere with reading time. You can get a great story one book at a time and each book is a good read on its own. Honest review of an ARC book.
The Crystal Beach series has been such a fun read and I have been here from the beginning. I am very fond of these characters and love to read about their adventures. In book 9, there is a very dark force at work and things are coming to a head. Some surprises here that I did not see coming at all and I loved it! Book 10 should be one hell of a ride. I received a free reader's copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving my honest opinion of the tale.
So much is going on in this 9th book of the series. Sydney’s powers are growing. A number of characters are admitting their secrets. A new ghost has appeared with a dire warning. I can’t wait to see what happens in the next story.
This series reminds me of the old serials that were on TV in 50’s and 60’s with each installment building upon the last leading to the big reveal.
I was fortunate to receive an advanced copy of this story.
