this was a throwback read and BABY you can feel it 😭 one of my book clubs wanted to tap into the roots of urban fiction and this was my pick… and honestly? i love kiki swinson coming from the wifey series but this one … what did i just read 😂
this is basically two books in one, and the shift between them is very real.
the first half by kiki swinson? pure chaos. we follow shannon trying to hold it down after her husband gets locked up, and when i say everybody is backstabbing everybody… i mean NOBODY is safe. i truly don’t know who was worse between shannon and joc because the loyalty was nonexistent. just lie after lie, setup after setup. messy boots all around 😭
then we move into the second half by de’nesha diamond, which follows robyn banks — who is a whole DEA agent trying very hard not to follow in her father’s criminal footsteps… just to end up tangled right back in the life. and yes, i just realized her name is literally robyn banks because they are robbing banks 😭 took me out.
this storyline felt a little more structured, with a clearer sense of direction and buildup. enter keston, who is fine, secretive, and clearly bringing trouble with him. you can see the danger coming from a mile away, but she still walking straight into it like “hmm… interesting” 😭
overall, you can definitely tell both stories are older. the writing styles are different, the pacing is a bit dated, but it was still entertaining for what it was. messy, dramatic, and a little ridiculous in the best way.
not something i’d rave about, but definitely an interesting little time capsule of urban fiction.
