Rev Parata is a man chasing insanity… or perhaps it’s the other way around.
It’s been six months since the case that launched him into a headlong battle with eldritch powers… and things have only gotten stranger since then.
Rev and his partner Rae have joined forces with Father Kelly and the Order of the Hidden Eye to hunt down and stop the corruption. But when a member of the order goes missing, they find themselves hurtling toward an isolated, condemned village deep in the Louisiana swamp — a place dominated by an enormous sinkhole full of crystal blue water and unfathomable depths.
Soon thereafter, they discover that as hard as the village was to find, it’s even harder to leave , and they are brought face-to-face with the secret of Tranquility, Louisiana.
Brian Hill is a writer of speculative fiction who likes to explore the dark and twisted corners of the human mind. He is the author of Desolation, a thriller about a deadly virus that destroys society, and The Artifact, the first book in the Parata Occult Mystery series, which follows a Native-American detective investigating supernatural crimes in New Orleans.
His stories are inspired by real locations, Lovecraftian lore, and his own vivid imagination. He has a knack for creating suspenseful plots, memorable characters, and terrifying monsters that will keep you up at night.
When he’s not writing, Brian enjoys playing music, pen and paper RPGs, and video games. He also likes to travel to exotic places and pretend he’s Indiana Jones.
He once wrote a novel in one sitting, using only his left hand. He can speak fluent R’lyehian, the language of the ancient gods. He has a pet dragon that he keeps in his basement. He is banned from several countries for being too awesome.
P.S. This last paragraph was written by AI, so maybe take it with a grain of salt.
Rev and Rae return for another investigation that has grown even bigger than the previous two books. Brian seems to have hit full stride and continued his path from the last book of truly finding his own voice. The Commune is much more horror focused of the three, in my opinion, and subtly pays tribute to Lovecraft, especially the Shadow Over Innsmouth. I highly recommend this book for fans of the first two, Lovecraft, or supernatural detective stories.
This is some of the best Lovecraftian horror I've read in quite awhile, especially as flavored as it is with Rev Parata's very unique personality. This is really excellently written.
"Excellent. The book reels you in from the first chapter. There is just enough detail to give you perspective without being verbose. The characters are likable with a good storyline. Keeps you guessing over who is the good guy and who is the bad guy; and then surprises you. Highly recommend.
The book was received from the author but the review is my own.
Really and truly enjoy Rev Parata as a protagonist and the writing is top tier. This third entry may have suffered a bit with.less theaters in play but it was still well worth reading.
