Above, it is noted that the book was written by various authors. There were nine in total, Geoff Barton among them, competent writers who definitely know all about the band, and did impeccable research to add even more to the mystique and story of the band. If there is one critique of the book, it would be the print is quite small, so if you have eyesight issues, possibly a magnifying glass would assist you. I suppose the smaller the print, the more you can fit in, so that is a positive, but still bigger is better when you are reporting on a band as important as this one. Led Zeppelin really came from the ashes of the Yardbirds. Jimmy Page was the founder of the group, adding of course Robert Plant, John Paul Jones, and John Bonham. 1968 was the year they formed and the musical world was never the same. It was interesting to note the band only released one 45 during their entire existence. That was Whole Lotta Love, and it was partially responsible for igniting their career. They did not believe in singles. Some people argue their biggest hit Stairway To Heaven was released as a 45. It was on an album and albums sales with that song propelled it up the charts. The book is most thorough with the stories throughout the book telling the story of the band from beginning to the breakup. Each album is noted and how some of the songs were created, and the inspiration for many of them. Such trivia bits as the song Black Dog was created by John Paul Jones, writing it on a piece of paper that was a train ticket. It was written while riding the train. The band did have its ups and downs and controversies as all bands often do, but they continued their ascension to the tops of the chart with one best-selling album after another. What really signaled the end for them was when member John Bonham died in 1980. It was said that because of his cravings for alcohol that ultimately resulted in his death. There were potential reunions and members coming together, and searches for another drummer, but the glory days as fans remember seemed in the rear-view mirror. Still, they left quite the legacy. LED ZEPPELIN THE ULTIMATE COLLECTION is certainly a book fans of the band should consider reading, smaller print or not.
