There’s a fine line between hate and fated mates…
Jeremiah has better things to do than babysit the bratty crown prince of the Sirens. His personal protection agency is the best though and the king and queen won’t settle for less.

Being a practically invulnerable Hellhound doesn’t hurt either.

Remi’s selfish and uncaring attitude drives him crazy and confirms his suspicions about the prince being nothing more than a spoiled man-child. He doesn’t care that the more time they spend together, the more possessive his Hellhound becomes of the little princeling.

Or that it turns out first impressions might be misleading…

Falling for a client is the last thing he can let happen. His name and his company’s reputation are on the line. He won’t be led around by his… instincts.

When things begin to heat up between them though, he can’t deny their connection might just be destiny. One thing he knows for sure?

Fire and water will always make steam.

Sunshine is the first in the new Trident Agency series by co-writing duo, EM Lindsey and Kiki Clark. It features a grumpy Hellhound affectionately known as Sunshine to his teammates, a half-Siren prince who’s more interested in sassying than following orders, a size difference a certain bodyguard loves to take advantage of, and truckloads of *chef’s kiss* possessiveness and touch him and get unalived vibes.

I have been SUPER busy lately!!! So it took me way longer to finish this book than I intended. I also may have got lost in some fanfiction along the way… 👀 I apologize if my review is a bit messy for that reason. But overall I thought the book was good!! Very entertaining.

Remi is crown Prince, awaiting the throne of the Sirens’. However, he is only half Siren and has spent his entire life being made to believe that he’s lesser than everyone else. As he walks the streets of his kingdom he is met with constant insults that follow him between shadows and tight corners. The only way Remi manages to escape the whispers is to leave, to hide away in a college far away from home among the humans where he feels less noticeable. But one night when he is almost kidnapped in the darkness of an alley he is instantly flown back to his home by a pair of very worried parents and placed beneath the care of a very grumpy, very intimidating bodyguard.

Jeremiah is a Hellhound, an unholy species not worthy of love or acceptance in the public’s eye. And that’s exactly what Jeremiah experiences as a child, rejection from the world. Only as he gets older he begins to tune everything out, he locks his emotions away in a chest and lets it sink to the bottom of the ocean. Then with that taken care of he builds a family of his own. The Trident Agency is a company that specializes in protection founded by Jeremiah who wrangled a bunch of mythical creatures and made the home he had always hoped for. Life simply moves along after that until he is hired by the Siren King and Queen to protect their son. A selfish brat who only cares for his looks and his power which is what Jeremiah thinks at first until he learns there is more that lies beneath Remi’s scales.

Their relationship, if you haven’t already guessed, is an enemies to lovers with a wonderful tension that crackles and pops every time they lay their eyes on each other. That’s not all though because they also have a lot in common. As Jeremiah gets to know Remi he realizes they share the same burden. Having to stand against a world that views them as less, unworthy, and undeserving. Which ultimately brings them closer together and paves the way for some lovely emotional scenes. My favorite parts were just watching Jeremiah and Remi grow as a couple and witnessing them make something beautiful out of their past pain. Also the smut, that was pretty good.

And if you absolutely love mythical creatures like me this book is practically mythical creatures galore. There is almost any creature you can think of and I loved getting to learn about all of them. I also very much need to mention Oz, he is a side character but he is so lovely, I adored him. I neeeed his book!! He seems very interesting.

Overall, this story packs a punch of fantasy and amazing tension. Remi and Jeremiah are such a fun couple, I mean I would have never thought about reading a love story between a Siren and a Hellhound.

I didn’t know I needed a hellhound MC in my life until Sunshine - and now I want MORE.

The world-building here is simple but effective, introducing a delightfully diverse cast of supernatural beings: hellhounds, sirens, gargoyles, dragons, demons, vampires — you name it, it’s in this book. I absolutely loved that mix.

From page one, I was gone for Jeremiah - the bristly, ever-scowling hellhound with a heart of gold underneath all that growl cheekily nicknamed Sunshine. Remi, the half human/half siren Prince and heir to the throne on the other hand, took me a little longer to warm up to. He started out acting like a spoiled, bratty prince (which, to be fair, he kinda was), but I ended up really loving his growth. By the end, he’d earned every bit of my affection.

Absolutely to no surprise for literally anyone: My fav thing was the possessiveness and ‘mine’ and all the marking, biting, claiming fated mates stuff because I simply LOVE THAT SHIT!!

Add into that the found-family warmth of Jeremiah and his team and an adorable sibling relationship between Remi and the twins and I was just, gah, happy 🥰

Remi’s parents were maybe a bit too perfect to feel real, but after too many books full of toxic families, I’ll take the loving parents any day. It was actually refreshing.
Plot-wise, I did clock the bad guy about 5% in, so that part wasn’t exactly a shocker, but watching everyone else piece it together was still entertaining. Honestly, the story had enough heart (and heat) that it didn’t even matter.

Speaking of heat… THE FOUNTAIN SCENE 🥵🥵 I swear I forgot to breathe. Their chemistry and that delicious restraint absolutely did it for me. And then the self-defense lesson, the massage AND THE SHIFTED POOL SCENE 🧜‍♂️ - holy hell(hound) 🫦🫦🫦

That said, there were a few small things that pulled me out of it. The secrecy around their relationship didn’t always line up with how openly affectionate they were; it felt inconsistent. And Remi’s decision near the end was just painfully stupid. There was no reason not to tell Jeremiah what he was about to do - that classic TSTL moment we all dread. And then there was the mystery that just… fizzled out a bit in the last 10%.
Still, those were minor annoyances compared to my one major complaint: we were ROBBED of their first time in unshifted form. Remi was a virgin! I needed to witness that moment, okay? Call me a pervert, but I feel robbed and I stand by it.

All in all, though, Sunshine was a vibrant, sexy, and surprisingly heartfelt read that brought me such joy (despite the niggles) and was made even more enjoyable by my book club girlies with whom I was panting, swooning and taking smoke breaks after those kinds of scenes 🥵 I just had the best time reading this with you, love you lots!

I had high hopes for this one, but even though the beginning was promising, the book quickly deteriorated into meaningless chaos.

Remi is a deceitful, immature brat with terrible self-esteem. Even after bonding with Jeremiah, Remi still tricks him so he can ... what? Explain something to someone who's obviously unhinged. That's what FaceTime is for, dear princling.

Remi must get his smarts from his mother, who continually puts her kids in danger by hiring a protective services agency and then ignoring all their advice. Not that the agency is much help.

This isn't the first time I've read a book where the elite protection crew is utterly incompetent. Jeremiah and his team establish that there's an insider threat at the palace and that they can trust no one. So what do they do? Leave random palace detail to guard the 4-year-old twins' room. Because of course they do.

And this dude is then able to sneak two royal kids out of the palace and out of the country without anyone stopping him. What a feat! The Trident Agency should hire this guy.

Raise your hand if you spotted the villain from page one? It's so incredibly obvious. I mean no one investigated the "best friend"??

There is a lot going on here, but the world building is vague at best. The authors decided that hey, there are numerous supe books out there now, so why do the work of creating a believable society? Nah, we'll just throw the readers into the thick of things and hope for the best. Such lazy writing.

Even the romance didn't do much for me. It's the usual we can't/we can dynamic that's boring and unoriginal.

And because I wasn't frustrated enough, the "epilogue" features a huge pet peeve of mine: Rather than focusing on the happy couple, it's a set-up for the second book.

⭐️ 4/5 — Fated mates between a Hellhound and a half-Siren half-human prince? Yeah, it’s as wild, tender, and chaotic as it sounds. 🐾👑
🌶 3.5/5 — Cock pocket, knotting, and a possessive mating bite—basically, a one-way ticket to overheated e-reader territory. 🫦🔥

💖 Chaos, Cackles, and Book Club Love 💖

Honestly, reading this book was a damn blast — but what really made it special was doing it with my book club babes. The group chat chaos, the collective screaming, the way we all lost our minds at the same parts? Absolute highlight. 😂🔥 Every smoke break after those spicy scenes felt like a sacred little ritual at this point. 💀 Love you, my beautiful, lovely girls — can’t wait for our next session! 💋💖

💭 My Rambling 💭

Fated mates? Hell yeah, sign me up every time. 🙂‍↕️ But this one doesn’t go full “you’re mine forever” in chapter one—it’s more of a slow tease than a fiery insta-bond, and I ate it up anyway. 😋 Finished the last page and immediately threw myself at book two like the greedy reader I am. 🤩😝

🔥🧜🏻‍♂️ The MCs 🧜🏻‍♂️🔥

Jeremiah aka Sunshine 🌞 — The so-called Hellhound from the wrong side of every border, is a walking contradiction—feared, powerful, untouchable in the Trident Agency he built from scratch, yet still carrying the scars of a childhood spent in shelters and fire-retardant blankets. He’s grumpy, rough-edged, and terrifying to most, but under all that hellfire is a man who never really believed he deserved a mate or a family—until duty drags him right into Remi’s orbit. 🐾🔥😠

Remi 🧜🏻‍♂️ — He might be the crown prince of Midlona, but don’t let the title fool you—being half-Siren with a scandalous royal love story for parents means he’s spent his whole life dodging whispers and side-eye. He’s spoiled and overprotected, sure, but underneath the pampered shine is a bratty, stubborn sweetheart who’d do anything for his family… even if what he really wants is to break free of the palace bubble and live on his own terms. 👑🌊🏖

💔 Two Halves, One Destiny 💞

Quote: (Jeremiah)
It was impossible. Hellhounds didn’t have mates. Not like other Supes. They were an abomination. An unnatural combination of Werewolves and Demons that were never meant to exist.

Quote: (Remi)
He didn’t love the idea of his future or the fact that he’d probably be one of the most universally hated crowned royals thanks to his human blood. He didn’t love that he’d be judged for never finding his fated mate because half humans didn’t get those.

💭 My heart shattered, okay? 💔😭 These two precious disasters really thought they were too "wrong" to ever be loved back by fate itself. Mixed blood, mixed pain, and a whole lot of self-doubt jokes on them, because destiny had other plans. 😌

❤️‍🔥 “Just Yours” — The Scene That Melted Me 😭💘

Quote:
“You don’t just make me feel safe. I can’t breathe when you’re not near me. My whole body aches for you. The only time I feel whole is when I’m in your arms.”
The words reverberated through him, setting off a vibration of awareness. His declaration was an echo of the throbbing need Jeremiah had been doing his best to ignore for weeks.“It doesn’t change who you are—”
“Forget who I am. When I’m with you, I’m not the future king. I’m not too human or not enough Siren. I’m just… me. Remi. Just—”
“Mine.”
“Just yours.”

💭 Tell me why I was sitting there clutching my chest like a damn telenovela heroine 😭❤️‍🔥 The power in that “Mine”?? The way Remi drops the crown and Jeremiah drops his walls?? Yeah, that’s my kryptonite. 🫠 Fated mates who choose each other anyway are everything. 🤌🏻✨️

🔥🐾 The Hellhound's Devotion ❤️‍🔥🖤

Quote: (Jeremiah)
"I could kill him and make it so no one ever found his body."
He was... half-joking.
He wasn’t sure if he should inform his sweet little prince that he’d do just about anything for him. Take a bullet. Kill a rival. Destroy an empire.
There was no limit to his and his hound’s devotion.

💭 Jeremiah’s not just loyal—he’s terminally in love. Like, “Blink at my prince wrong and I’ll rearrange your bloodline” kinda love. And I stan that level of unhinged devotion. 🙂‍↕️🖤😍
He doesn’t protect—he possesses. That man’s love language is violence and vows whispered through gritted teeth. Tell me that’s not sexy as fuck. 😈🫦

🔥🥵 The Moan Heard Across Realms 🍆💦

Quote:
Jeremiah shifted his angle, and a second later, he was inside. His thick cock filled Remi’s slit, sliding alongside Remi’s aching, soaking-wet cock.
“You like that?” Jeremiah grunted.
Remi opened his eyes, his lip between his teeth to keep from screaming as Jeremiah adjusted his angle and hit something inside him that sent him wild with lust.
“Oh, you do, don’t you, little princeling? You fucking love it. You fucking love the way I fill you.”
“Yeah, yes, fuck,” Remi gasped.

💭 Holy hellfire! 🔥🔥🔥 That scene?? Jeremiah didn't just fuck Remi—he claimed him. It was intense AF, scorching hot, and the kind of heat that brands your damn soul before you go for a smoke break. 🚬🫠

💗✨️ Found Family Chaos and Banter 💥💀

Quote:
“What do we do again?” Priest hissed to him as they stepped past the threshold. “Do we bow?”
“You fuckin’ curtsey,” Knight murmured.
“I’m going to fuck you in your dreams if you don’t shut your mouth,” Priest threatened under his breath.
Storm had to turn a laugh into a cough, his face getting red at the effort to contain it.
“And I’m going to set you all on fire if you don’t knock it off,” Jeremiah warned them.

Quote:
“I heard Sunshine found his mate,” Slate said, his voice a low rumble. It only took Remi a second to recognize the secondary traits of a Gargoyle. But he wasn’t as stoic as Remi was used to, pulling Remi into a hug instead of taking his hand.
It was odd and comforting, and Remi understood now why Jeremiah was close to him.
“You missed all the action, bud,” Storm said, clapping him on the arm.

💭 The Trident Agency crew is pure gold—chaotic, loyal, and soft under all that snark. They fight, love, and threaten to set each other on fire like real siblings… if real siblings were deadly, hot-ass supers with tragic backstories. 🥹😭💖✨️

🙄 What Burned My Patience 😠💢

Remi, babe, pick a lane! 😤 One second he’s soft and sweet, the next he’s throwing tantrums like it’s a sport. My neck’s sore from all the emotional whiplash. And don’t even get me started on how damn gullible and susceptible he is—boy’s trust issues are fighting for dominance with his self-doubt. 🙄😮‍💨

Then we’ve got Thad and his band of dumpster fires? Absolute walking red flags, all of them. 💩🖕🏻 And Remi sending Jeremiah away for dessert while plotting a “secret” convo that leads to his own kidnapping? Bro… be fucking serious. 🍰🚫🤦🏻‍♀️

📝 TLDR 📝

Give this one a go if you’re into:
💞 Fated mates with a slow-burn twist (at least for me it's a slow one 😂)
🔥 A grumpy, overprotective Hellhound who worships his royal mate
🧜🏻‍♂️ A bratty, insecure Siren prince who just wants to belong
🛡 Bodyguard + royal dynamic with hella devotion and possessiveness
✨️ Found family, banter, emotional confessions, with a dash of action, and political chaos

Quotes: ⚠️ Spoilers ⛔️

Jeremiah was in front of him in a single second, half crouched as a light dusting of black fur erupted over his skin. If Remi thought the sun was hot that day, that was nothing compared to the heat rolling off Jeremiah in massive waves.
Hellfire.
-
Jeremiah wanted to growl and scare the look right off his face. Or… kiss it off. The second option was so appealing he felt his dick twitch in his jeans, and he wanted to slam his head into the wall until it stopped. He needed to get Remi away from him. Whatever the fuck this feeling was, he couldn’t concentrate. He couldn’t do his damn job properly.
-
Jaw tightening, Jeremiah jabbed a finger at him, claw pointed and sharp-looking. “The difference is watching you undress. Seeing you peel the clothes off your body. Imagining they get to see more. Do more. Tempting men who are responsible for your safety with thoughts like that is just dumb. Don’t do it again, Remington.”
-
“This isn’t working. I’m going to talk to my mother, and we’ll figure out another person to run my protection detail.”
Despite the fact that Jeremiah had been trying to do that exact same thing earlier that morning, hearing Remi say the words had his hellfire roaring to life under his skin. Like fucking hell someone else would protect him.
-
“It would make my life a lot easier if my team could track down who the fucking leak in the castle is. Then we could take this person down, and you could get back to your life.”
“And you can forget all about me,” Remi said.
“That’s not what I meant,” Jeremiah said, softer than he’d ever spoken to Remi.
-
“They’re going to throw me out on my ass if—when they find out what I did,” Jeremiah said, shoving his fingers into his hair and tugging. He started to sit, but halfway into his crouch, he shot back up again and started pacing. “We’ve barely made any headway with this investigation, we’ve made almost no progress in tracking down the leak, and now I’ve molested—”
“Whoa, wait. What the fuck?” Knight asked. He was on his feet, his fangs dropping and eyes flooding with a red glow. “You did what?”
Jeremiah wanted to sink into the floor. “I kissed him.”
“Against his will?” Knight growled.
Jeremiah slapped a hand over his face and dragged it down. “No, but—”
“Oh, by the everlasting fucking gods,” Knight said and collapsed back down. “Can you please not use the word ‘molested’ when you’re talking about making out with a man who clearly wants to climb you like a tree? Swim you like an ocean?” Knight added with a frown. “Whatever the equivalent is for Sirens.”
-
“I don’t give a fuck about the contract. If she insists on sending you back to Hillsland before we find who’s behind this, then I’m coming with you.”
“You will?”
“Little princeling…” Gods, he wanted to say so much. To tell him he’d never let him go. That his Hellhound had decided for the both of them long before Jeremiah had even admitted to himself that he was attracted to Remi. That he would claim him as his mate in every way imaginable and tie them together for eternity.
-
“Did you need me for something?”
“No, I just… I hadn’t seen you in hours and needed to put eyes on you.”
“You know I’m safe here, right? If nowhere else, I am here.”
“I know. I just… I needed to see you.”
“I needed to see you too.”
-
“Shower?”
Jeremiah swung his legs over the bed and stalked forward, taking Remi by the throat. He had no idea what the fuck was coming over him, but he suddenly couldn’t bring himself to care. He was bringing Remi into a Dragon Hoard full of horny, polyamorous, gorgeous men.
Like fuck he was washing off his scent.
“Don’t you dare.”
“Shit,” Remi whispered, eyes fluttering shut as he leaned into Jeremiah’s possessive hold.
“You’re mine. And they’re going to know it.”
Remi licked his lips, then nodded, and only then did Jeremiah let go, entirely satisfied.
-
“I’m ready as long as you’re with me.”
“I’m not going anywhere. Ever.”
-
“Did you mean it?”
“Yes, little princeling. I love you. I know being with me won’t be easy—”
“Shut up. I don’t need easy. I just need you.”
“I love you too.”
“Thank the gods,” Jeremiah said, lips twitching into a smile.
-
“What if I decide to abdicate? Will you still love me if I’m not a prince anymore?”
“You don’t have to do that for me. I’ll stand by you no matter what. I’ll support you, no matter your decision. And you’ll always be my prince.”
-
“Bite me, baby. Bite me while you fill me with your knot. Need to be yours.”
“My prince. Never letting you go.”
“I’ll never want you to.”
-
“I hope someday you’ll stop being surprised by how much I fucking adore you.”
“I don’t. It’s precious to me. I never, ever want to get complacent.

This was a fun, romantic story full of action, emotion, and magic. It follows Jeremiah, a Hellhound (aka Sunshine) who can control hellfire. His new job is to protect Remi, a half-Siren prince whose voice can control people — but Remi’s not very confident in this side of his heritage and feels himself more human than supernatural.

At first, they don’t get along — Jeremiah is tough and grumpy, while Remi is proud and stubborn. But as they spend time together, they start to understand each other and fall in love. The side characters at the Trident Agency feel like a big, funny family in that world of magic and shifters.

“What am I going to do with you, little princeling?”
Remi had a few X-rated ideas.

“I don’t know what the future holds,” Jeremiah whispered against his skin. “But I know that I won’t just die for you, Remington. I will live for you, and I will fight for you.

Some parts were a little slowly, but overall Sunshine had an exciting story, was heartfelt and had its seriously hot moments. I’m looking forward to how this continues for the other members of Trident Agency.

[…] every time they were within ten feet of each other, he couldn’t decide if he wanted to strangle the arrogant man or throw himself into his arms.

When I saw a promo post for this, I *knew* I needed to read it. Paranormal, bodyguard, age gap and shifters? SO sold. Thankfully, it more than lived up to my expectations. I had tons of fun while reading it, and I finished it super fast.

There’s definitely a case of push and pull in this, but I thought the reasoning behind it was solid, so it wasn’t as annoying as I usually find that trope. The build-up of sexual tension was lovely.

“I don’t know what the future holds,” Jeremiah whispered against his skin. “But I know that I won’t just die for you, Remington. I will live for you, and I will fight for you. […]”

These authors managed to create a very original paranormal fantasy world, and it really was a joy to explore it and learn how it all works and the dynamics between different species and countries. The action was super well done as well, and I am so excited for the second book! Very highly recommend.

The few humans close by scattered as soon as they drew near, and Jeremiah could only guess what he looked like: eyes lit up with blue flames, fangs protruding from his mouth, and smoke rising from his shoulders. Anyone with even just a few brain cells left would know to get the fuck out of his way.

This book was amazing! I loved it from beginning to end, fated mates and grumpy/sunshine are some of my favourite tropes and this book portrayed them perfectly.
There is so much that I liked in this book. Remi is a half human and half siren, he is going to university in a human kingdom as he just wants to be normal. Being halfbreed is difficult for him but he never expected someone wanting to kill him. Jeremiah, or Sunshine as his workmates call him, is the perfect bodyguard to keep him safe. A grumpy hellhound who has had a difficult life and feels he doesn't belong anywhere other than with his found family.
I loved, loved their banter at the beginning of the book. They thought they were so different and argued and bitched at each other all the time. It was funny to see that they were more alike than they first thought. Eventually, after spending time together they realised it and I enjoyed watching them fall for each other so much.
This story was beautiful, two souls trying to find their place in the world that shared so much more than they anticipated. Being fated mates made it inevitable for them to end up together and I was looking forward to them realising they belonged together. It was sweet, but hot too and I loved Jeremiah's possessiveness over Remi.
This book has everything I like in a paranormal story. There are so many different creatures and I can't wait to read the stories of Jeremiah's friends. There is also so much action, wonderful secondary characters and romantic moments. I truly loved it and can't wait for the next one in the series!

This was somewhat fine at first but there were so many things that bothered me, and then what happens after chap 16 was just too much.

What I loved were the side characters and the world building. I feel like we have time to connect with them, even more than with the main couple. Their chemistry just did not work for me. They have a feeling of being fate mates (which is mentioned at the very beginning) but for the rest of the book both characters just blatantly ignore it or choose not to discuss it. Like you're bitten but don't ask what it means? These characters rarely talked to each other besides dirty talk or just the typical grump/brat convo they had. And when they had a moment of a bonding conversation it is fade to black, and then a blow job follows (and a week after).

The plot is really loose and mostly non-existent. Some stuff happens but then there is literally no development for chapters on end. And then, at like 73 %, something starts happening but Remi behaves really irrationally - he hates the characters involved, he suddely remembers he's insecure and believes them instead. Like, I was just shaking my head and then just skimmed the rest of the book. And it is ridiculous - both the villain, and the mending of the MC's relationship.

As for the spice - it was great, most described are blow jobs, there is one scene which... I don't know? I thought they wanted to do it more romantic but it is not (one MC even thinks it is basically a dub-con). And then we mostly get blow jobs. I think I am bitter because I wanted more chemistry and actual connection between the two MCs.

For the most part, the characters keep on having internal monologues that keep on repeating but are rarely discussed and actually resolved. I maybe wished Remi was a bit different - not just this bratty boy who is actually hurt on the inside... but the hurt was not as believable. It more felt like the character suddenly remembers the speciesism and then behaves as if traumatized. And he even sides with the idiots. I was really confused. Remi did not feel layered but just conflicting to push the plot further.

I think I'll continue the series - I am interested in Priest, but even more in Knight.

Well this was something...

Ok, first off, I will admit to being a super fan of both of these writers so when I heard of this collab, I jumped at getting it.

Lets be honest right at the stop, I don't think this was written smoothly enough. Some chapters read really good, then another would take me out of the story.

Why the 4 stars then? I got into the overarching story. That was good enough for me to keep going.

Also, this has a sheath which I love when it comes to aliens and shifters and other beings.

Jeremiah and Remi worked mostly, but I really did not like Remi.

Also, the ending on a cliffhanger was awful. I have dropped series for doing just that.

Series: Trident Agency #1
Rating: 2 stars - It was ok

When the Siren royal family escaped a kidnapping attempt, the Queen hired the best protection agency to figure out who was behind the attack. Trident Agency is a band of misfit supernaturals lead by hellhound Jeremiah, nicknamed Sunshine, who has been assigned as the personal bodyguard of the crown prince Remington. Remi may be a selfish and bratty prince but Jeremiah’s hellhound wants him.

I have some mixed feelings about this book. The world was very interesting and kept me reading. This is a world filled with hellhounds, sirens, gargoyles, dragons, vampires and a bunch of other kinds of supernaturals. Some of these supernaturals have their own kingdoms and there is a lot of politics and racism between races, and between humans and supernaturals. I really enjoyed this new world.

My main issue with this story was the couple. While I really liked Jeremiah, I didn’t like Remi. From the very beginning, Remi is a spoiled and selfish prince who is constantly focused on himself more than the danger to his family. This got old very quickly and honestly he came across as a teenager throwing a fit a lot of times, which I know he is supposed to be bratty but I don’t want him to feel like an actual teenager because that's a bit wrong. Remi’s age is never specifically stated but I assume since he is in college he is around 20-23 years old, but I still expected a bit more maturity from this character.

The relationship between these two was fine for me. Their relationship is a fated mates situation and it takes a while for them to work it out because they both don’t believe they can have fated mates and because of the class difference. Also like I said, I wasn’t loving how childish Remi’s character was coming across and considering this is an age gap, their relationship just didn’t make sense to me. Why would Jeremiah, a man who is running his own company, fall for a spoiled prince who has no sense of responsibility and is so selfish. But it's fated mates and they don’t always make sense. I will say I did like Remi more after the relationship started though because he did start to actually think about others and act his age, which was why I didn’t stop reading this book.

Overall, while I didn’t really enjoy this couple I still am very interested in this world and the Trident Agency brothers. They are a group of misfits that I am very interested in learning more about so I will be reading the next book.

CW: derogatory language directed at both main characters; kidnapping and abuse;

I received an advance copy from the author for review purposes; this in no way influences my review.

THIS REVIEW IS NOT SPOILER FREE

EM Lindsey is one of my top fave authors, and Kiki Clark quickly added herself to my must-read authors with Kincaid Pack series, and I loved the duo’s precious collab, Scythe. So when I had a chance to read Sunshine early, I scooped it up immediately and dived in. Unfortunately, I am DNFing at 25%. At intrigued as I am by the world itself and as much as I found the writing engaging, this is just a story that isn’t working for me. My biggest qualms are with Remi, the young half-siren heir apparent, and I’m sure a lot of it is presenting him as young and naive, but it still hit me personally poorly. One of the earliest scenes in the book is Remi with his human “friends” who make comments about his ex being terrible because he’s a nephillim, but don’t worry - Remi is “one of the good ones, not like those other supes.” I was really upset that there is no textual addressing of how terrible those microaggressions are and the overt bigotry of it all. I don’t even necessarily expect Remi to directly challenge those comments, but there wasn’t even textual evidence that he saw how terrible that was or that the reader should know. I mean, I’m sure readers of these authors may know, but also… I also was deeply uncomfortable with Remi talking about how he has almost a duty to stay friends with those guys because by being friends with him, they’re seeing supernatural people as people just like humans. And again, I recognize how this can be a setup to show Remi as young and naive and he definitely has internalized stuff because he’s too much a siren for humans, and too human for the sirens so he’s not wholly accepted in either community/society. I also didn’t like how his “best friend” is the son of a politician who thinks humans and supernatural people should be kept segregated, but Remi is all “but he’s not that bad~” I’m fairly sure (I didn’t skip ahead or anything) Thad is the reason Jeremiah got hurt when/how he did because he’s def made the comments that hint to a deeper hatred and prejudice. This is wholly my own personal opinions and my own journey, but this is not a story I expected from these authors and this is not a story I want to give more of my time, energy, or focus to.

Really enjoyed this one!! The flow of the story felt perfect, I never felt like it dragged or skimmed anything too quickly. The hate-to-love was beautifully done, and even more beautiful was their love and partnership after they moved fully into the “love” part. This was a beautiful story about being different and accepting yourself for who you are. I loved it! Such a sweet and lovely story.

Wow, just.. wow! I highly enjoy books by both Kiki and EM, their books are always ones I recommend, and the ones that hold a special place in my heart, and they also take up room in my brain. These two coming together to write a paranormal series with fated mate components? I mean, that sounds like the perfect pairing/idea/plan!!

These two know how to write, okay? I don't even think I have to note how well the book was written but I'll do it. The writing was superb, you can't tell this book was written by two authors, the pages and chapters just flow seamlessly. The writing has such a good flow, and the mysterious person/people behind the attacks are always just out of view. These two didn't write their mystery in a way where you'd immediately be able to identify who is the guilty party. They keep you on your toes, bring more people to light so you'll think it's them, when in reality it's someone completely different. It was just done excellently!! Now that I've spoken about how well the plot and overall storyline was written, now I'll dive into the characters!

Sunshine, aka, Jeremiah, is such a great character! He takes his job seriously, but despite his gruff demeanor he's kind and cares deeply about not only the well being of his clients, but also the well being of his team, who are also his found family. I really liked how his hellhound side was described, it was very interesting and completely captivated me. Because of people's rude remarks and their hateful judgement he kept going back and forth with himself over he should let himself be with the prince, and that angst was perfect! It wouldn't of been a true collaboration from these two authors if there wasn't angst, and things going wrong. Those angsty moments, made the romance and the happy moments shine, and made them worth the angst.

Remi is our other MC, he's half Siren and half human. He has also been judged and defined by others over what he is, or rather what he isn't. Due to that, he is insecure and doesn't trust things that are right in front of him. He puts on a front to those around him, tries to be someone he's not, but his Sunshine sees right through him.

The side characters were superb!! I'm so glad that these two authors already announced that this is going to be a series cause there are SO MANY characters I want to learn more about!! I need to know more about them all! The fated mate component was done really well and done in a really lovely way. Both men refused to acknowledge what their shifter sides and their hearts were telling them, which made their realization of who they are to each that much sweeter. Overall I am completely blown away by this book, these characters, and this incredible world. I'm so excited and eager for future books in this series!

Are you looking for a book with fated mates? How about the bodyguard trope, spoiled prince meets bodyguard? How about creatures like hell hounds and sirens? There's also found family, age gap, size difference, virgin mc, and a pretty over the top villain. Yeah, there's a lot going on, but it's good!

Remi is the crown prince of Midlona. He's away at college and running with some less than stellar folks. When a kidnapping goes awry with not only Remi, but his twin baby siblings, he's forced to go home while his parents, the queen and king, figure out what's going on. It's back home where he meets the new security guy.

Jeremiah is a hell hound and also the owner of the Trident Security Agency. His new mission is to protect the spoiled brat of a prince from his own stupidity.

What starts off as a bodyguard/protectee thing turns into something way more as the story progresses.

Kiki and EM set up what looks to be an entertaining series that I'm excited to look out for. I think we'll see everyone from the Trident agency get their fated mates.

There were parts of this story that were difficult to read. Seeing Remi so unsure of himself and so uncomfortable in his own skin wasn't easy. But I'm glad he found his mate, even if I wanted him to stop being such a dummy for quite a while there.

I really enjoyed Jeremiah's character 💕 these two work so well together!

I absolutely recommend this one! Love a good bodyguard story!

A Joyfully Jay review.

4.5 stars

Sunshine is the first book in E.M. Lindsey and Kiki Clark’s new Trident Agency series and I really loved it. I found the world building here a lot of fun, as it is sort of a contemporary, alternate world with some countries predominantly supernatural, like Midlona being a siren country and the neighboring country home to the gargoyles. The authors bring a lot of creativity here and a wealth of various supernatural beings. I loved the siren and hellhound pairing, as both types of beings are fairly uncommon in romance. We are also introduced to a variety of other supernaturals, as well as getting some background on the various global politics.

A story full of action, an unlikely romance, and a whole new supernatural world!
Remi is the crown Prince of Midlona, but not everyone is happy about that. When his powerful Siren mother chose a human mate, Remi and his siblings were branded as halfbreeds. Remi wants to forge his own life and goes away to university, but an attempted attack makes his parents pull him home. He also learns that his parents have hired the Trident Agency to find the threat and protect their family.
Jeremiah has earned the code name Sunshine thanks to his aloof and gruff attitude. The Hellhound was abandoned as a child, and built his own family with his security team. When he meets Remi, he sees a spoiled, reckless brat. But seeing Remi with his family and learning his insecurities makes Jeremiah see him in a new light.
Remi and Jeremiah are really supportive of each other (once they get passed their initial disdain!), and they have great steamy chemistry! I really enjoy the world Kiki and EM created and I’m excited to see where it takes us next!
-Siren
-Hellhound
-Prince/bodyguard

Sunshine

I have a soft spot for fated mates that seem completely mismatched upon first glance but really are the last pieces that complete each other.

“When I’m with you, I’m not the future king. I’m not too human or not enough Siren. I’m just… me. Remi. Just—”
“Mine.”
Remi shuddered in his arms. “Just yours.”

I am definitely Jeremiah’s. He and Remi were a lot of fun to get to know and watching these two fall for each other, stubborn though they both may be, was even more fun. I’m looking forward to more strident Agency and fated mates.

…………. 4.5 stars ………….

This was such a good read! It was the perfect distraction from the dumpster fire that was our election. I really loved getting to know a different side to both of these authors! The urban fantasy world they created is really interesting and well thought out and I’m really excited to dig into it more.

I really liked Remi and Jeremiah together, they really had that “I don’t like you and I’m going to make you miserable” to lovers thing going on and it really worked for them. I also loved the queerplatonic relationship rep we got between Jeremiah and his team! I can’t wait to explore that more in future books. All in all, this was a really great kickoff to a new series and it’s getting a solid four and a half stars!

I usually enjoy these author's work both individually and their collaborative works, but this one was a massive miss for me. It's really difficult to root for a couple when both MCs to some degree are self-loathing. Not to mention one is also a selfish, reckless, immature, whinging brat (and not in the fun way). There's no character I have less sympathy or empathy for than a hugely privileged one with little perspective and that willingly endangers others and that's exactly who Remi is. There's a serious threat to your family and you've been asked to sacrifice for a short time and he couldn't be bothered. He whines constantly and because he's such a dimwit, he shares all the PRIVATE security information with his horrible friends (more on that later) and then is surprised that they get attacked constantly. He's the worst.

I truly couldn't get behind the supposed chemistry or romance between Remi and Jeremiah. It seemed as though the authors were going for an enemies/rivals to lovers vibe but the constant poking at each other (with some really nasty overtones from Remi) wasn't cute or endearing. I could easily understand Jeremiah's hard exterior because he's only been shown negativity other than with his team but Remi was truly insufferable. The good was definitely the found family aspect of the Trident Agency team and I am mildly intrigued by the potential mates and lives of the other members even though i have reservations about the execution of those pairings/configurations. That's where the good ends, unfortunately.

Now to the main issue I have with this book, the unchallenged and unaccounted for bigotry in it. I can understand what the authors maybe wanted to do in trying to address the varying types of bigotry, discrimination and microaggressions that species face in this world but they fell well short. Remi is a character that constantly complains at how his people see him in a bad light because he's not fully a siren and how that makes him feel. We're supposed to empathise with him and his plight, yet he ignores the plight of others. Not just that, he CHOOSES to go to a place that is full of bigotry of supes and he cultivates relationships (that he calls friendships) with blatant, vocal bigots. As if that weren't bad enough, he engages in the same! He knows it's wrong but does it anyway. The authors use his inner monologue to keep telling us he knows it's wrong, yet he continues allowing it and engaging in it. He bends over backwards to make excuses for how he and his friends treat supes and especially how his "friends" are vocal with their h@te to not just supes in general but his ex Oz and his family specifically. It's disgustingly spineless. He has no grace for other supes or the humans he may one day rule over (OR Jeremiah and his team) but endless grace for Thad and his frat brothers hate.

I wouldn't have had such a problem with this if the authors had at any point meaningfully and even uncomfortably challenged these behaviours instead of letting Remi completely off the hook for his own actions. What's worse is that everyone bends over backwards to reassure Remi that he just "couldn't have known" and "can't be blamed" for ACTIVELY engaging in, and being accepting of open, spoken and blatant bigotry when that bigotry turned to violence. It's the biggest lie people tell themselves when being a player in discrimination and bigotry and how they absolve themselves of the responsibility to be better allies and people.

I couldn't get behind a character like this and I'm doubtful these authors should even be trying to tell a story like this, especially because a couple members of Jeremiah's team are coded as BIPOC. This book wasn't it and as much I have enjoyed these authors' work, they don't have the range for these kinds of themes. A shame but I won't fully give up on the series but I VERY worried about Storm's story already. Can't recommend.

It's been a while since I've been this excited about a new paranormal series, but with two of my favorite authors teaming up I should have known this book would be fantastic. And Jeremiah and Remi's story was fantastic--set in an interesting, magical universe with fascinating species, a cast of characters I grew invested in quickly, a spicy romance that also tugged on my heart, and an insidious threat against the royal family that kept me alert the whole time I was reading.

Remi was a little lost at the start of the book, trying to find himself and be independent and also make a romantic connection with someone, and I loved watching him grow into the person he wanted to be while also finding love beyond his wildest imagination. Jeremiah had convinced himself he was perfectly content with the state of his life, and seeing that grumpy Hellhound get knocked off course by his attraction to Remi filled me with glee. That's not to say they hit it off right away--if anything, Remi was predisposed to hate Jeremiah because he was yet another bodyguard preventing him from going out and doing the things he wanted to do. The two of them had an uneasy truce at the start that took an unexpected, steamy turn partway through the story as something deeper started bubbling up between them. And let me tell you, I was here for the steamy sexual tension, the fang-bearing, heated looks and barely clawed-back desire. Remi and Jeremiah knew their attraction was a bad idea and they still couldn't stay away from each other, and that combination sent me right over the edge. I devoured every scrap of attention they gave each other, every private thought and desperate wish until they finally couldn't resist any longer and crashed together in a blaze of passion. And that was really only the start of what turned into a deeply emotional bond that tied the two of them together in ways they hadn't expected. I felt the sincerity of their feelings for one another alongside their certainty that they wouldn't be allowed to stay together, and while the romantic in me wanted to scream that they should always be together, I also understood the prejudices of the society they lived in.

Throughout it all, Jeremiah and his team were working as hard as they could to figure out who was behind the attacks on Remi's family, but with so little to go after, they couldn't prevent multiple near-misses and one last terrifying kidnapping that threatened everything Remi and Jeremiah had built together. I thought the buildup to the climax of the story felt satisfyingly weighty, and the resolution gave me all the closure I needed while also providing a path for Jeremiah and Remi to be open about their love to the people they cared about most. With the two of them happy and in love, all of my attention is on the rest of the Trident Agency, and I'm already wildly speculating about who their fated connections will turn out to be.

**I voluntarily read an ARC of this book. This review expresses my honest thoughts and opinions.

I’m a huge fan of open-world urban fantasy, so I knew ahead of time that I’d enjoy this new series cowritten by one of my favorite authors. Lindsey and Clark play with multiple romance tropes in this book while also stretching other limits with a setting completely different from our own world, while keeping everything rooted solidly in the familiar.

By multiple tropes, we’re talking big ones: fated mates, enemies to lovers, bodyguard, royalty. Even a dose of age gap, though that plays more into Jeremiah (Sunshine) and Felix’s drastically different life experiences than actual number of years lived. All these tropes combined could be overwhelming, but the authors blend them into dynamic characters with natural chemistry and a relationship arc that weaves together seamlessly with the external plot. I especially appreciate these things when the fated mate element is involved, because that is too often a shortcut for some awkward combination of insta-lust and insta-love. Here, the trope becomes another intriguing facet of the genuine relationship arc and associated conflict.

Placing all of this in such an alien world could have also become too much, but Lindsey and Clark balance this by leaning just far enough into stereotypes that places and species become identifiable as archetypes instead of caricatures. Like all the best speculative fiction, they use fantasy elements as a stand-in to create engaging conflicts and interpersonal dynamics that evoke real-world issues without coming across as preachy.

I had no problem enjoying this series debut on its own, but I’m pleased that the authors resolved Jeremiah and Felix’s story into a happily ever after while also setting up a continuing conflict that allows them to move the focus to other members of Jeremiah’s team. This is because I was immediately intrigued by the other fascinating characters and I had questions about the external plot of this book. I would be more critical about some of the logic if this had been a stand-alone, but as the opening volley to an overarching narrative, my concerns become clues instead of plot holes. I look forward to reading more, and I encourage other fans of paranormal romance to join me for the ride.

Disclaimer: I received a digital review copy of this book from the authors.

I have a lot of things to do but let just keep binge-reading an author. Here's Kiki Clark's (and EM Lindsey's) Trident Agency series. The first book is "Sunshine."

["There’s a fine line between hate and fated mates…

Fire and water will always make steam."]

The fact that Jeremiah is the grumpiest grump to ever grump and his nickname is Sunshine? D: Yes. All of the yes.

I loved this universe. Parts of it was typical paranormal lore, but there was new aspects to it that made the series fascinating and unique. I loved the fated mates (duh), and how so much of the Trident Agency members were lost and broken but bonded like brothers. They all deserve a HEA, even if it comes with some danger (and brattiness).

Remi was a brat, but he was also using that as a shield to protect himself. He was so much more than his actions. It took Jeremiah a while to figure it out (his own stubbornness mixed with no-I'm-not-attracted-to-him).

They probably weren't as subtle as they thought they were... Actually, I can guarantee you they weren't. But it was adorable, how stuck in their own world they were, falling in love and letting go.

Trigger Warnings: threats, attempted kidnapping, kidnapping, violence, murder, fictional-slurs, discrimination, hate/hate-speech, and more.

This was a pretty good new series starter. I like these two authors, so was excited to see them doing a series together. Remi and Jeremiah are cute together, and I was happy to see them finding each other despite thinking they didn’t have a mate out there.

There are a few things I wish had been better:

- MC’s romantic connection felt weak and a bit shallow. Other than the mate pull, I didn’t really feel what they loved about each other.

- Their intimate scenes weren’t very passionate (save for the first), and I wanted to see Remi’s first time (in human form)…I mean, I love the virgin trope for a reason, lol.

- Continuity issues: 1) Jeremiah shifts in the street and his clothes burn up (so he’s naked), and several people, including Remi, are there to witness, then pages later, Remi thinks to himself that he’s only ever seen Jeremiah’s bare forearms up to that point. And even before that, Jeremiah goes to his room in just boxers when he hears yelling, but it’s only the twins excited to see Remi home. 2) The kidnapping scene has the twins speaking, then they’re said to be gagged. They’re also described as being bound (as Remi is as well), but then they each grab one of his hands. 3) Remi’s parents pretty much push Remi and Jeremiah together, and are happy for them, but then Remi mentions towards the end how he needs to tell his parents.

- Names being similar: I had trouble reading Jeremiah and not seeing Remi…JeREMIah. I wish they weren’t so similar. Also, Stone/Storm/Slate…ugh.

- Jeremiah’s nickname was odd and felt awkward when Remi said it.

- The world building needs more development, as well as details surrounding mates and bonding. It was all very vague and surface level, so it was hard to get a clear idea of how mating and bonding works in this world.

- Lack of a full wrap up on the plot/drama.

- POV was hard to keep track of at times. Their voices weren’t different enough to know for sure whose POV you were reading from chapter to chapter. With the age gap and completely different lifestyles and backgrounds, their POVs should have been vastly different.

However, overall, I enjoyed the story and hope there’s more detail and development in the next books. I like the others on the team, and look forward to all the guys finding their mates.

Really Great New Series!

I kind of stumbled on this book while looking for an omegaverse-esque book and wow am I happy this is the one I found! The world building and huge cast of characters is so well done. I’m ready for all the members of the Trident Agency to get their own books.

Jeremiah and Remi were great. I really enjoyed the progression of their relationship and how they both were so good at pushing each other’s buttons at the beginning. Remi could be a bit of a drama queen and a tad insolent but the moments with him and his siblings and him reluctantly noticing what he missed about being home were really sweet to read.

Jeremiah was by far my favorite of the two MMCs. He has a sad history and his little found family is so important to him. It was fun to read about how his organized life was thrown into upheaval with the arrival of Remi but it was even better to see how he showed some of his fears and hopes with his team and Remi’s parents. The hot chocolate scene was probably my favorite in the entire book.

The plot itself was alright but I guessed the “villain” from the beginning so that made the whole thing a little less engaging. I would have easily given this book four stars except that the way Remi went back and forth with constantly noticing the negative side of his time away from home and with his friends at college and yet decided to brush it to the side was so frustrating to read. Along that same vein, it was really frustrating to read Jeremiah and Remi constantly hinting that they should talk to someone about the bond they were feeling but both kept pushing it off. I would have liked it a lot better if even just one of them was open about everything with a friend or with themselves. Their constant internal battles and monologues were too repetitive for my taste.

In any case this book was still really great and I’ll be counting down the days to the next book in the series!
