Described as having 'a dark imagination', author C.S.Wood is 'proving to be an expert at his craft'.

He's spent over a decade immersed in a Gothic world, laying the foundations for his dark fantasy series, SABRE.

Craig spent his former years taking inspiration from Mary Shelly, Bram Stoker, James Herbert and Stephen King before being led down a Lovecraftian rabbit hole thanks to gruesome media such as Bloodborne, DOOM and The Thing (to name a few).

Born in the shire (Nottinghamshire), he also found a love for Tolkein and Rudyard Kipling, after going on many adventures with the Scouts, the Cadets, Duke of Edinburgh, and a band of feral friends.

He spent his childhood writing books, complete with gory sketches. This led him to study Journalism at the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan), where his writing developed. However, his wild imagination would lead him back into the world of fiction. At UCLan, he also studied history and Imperialism in Asia. He continues to be fascinated by world history, hence his love of all things Gothic.

When he's not writing gory scenes, Craig performs in a covers band called Parlaiz, he watches Nottingham Forest kick a football, and he dabbles in grim dark or Warhammer 40K. But his favourite passion is being a loving husband and father.

This book is the perfect start for a Fantasy series due to the great world-building.
The descriptions were very detailed and realistic.
The whole book was action packed with no dull moments and the storyline is intriging enough to make us want to keep reading the rest of the series.

Beware the man with arctic eyes…

The first book starts with a violent pirate action scene, which turns out to set the tone for much of the story. But the story then continues with a young boy named Todd, who seems to have a relatively ordinary life in a fantastic world.

Tragedy upon tragedy occurs in the boy's life, but by then I'd gotten pretty attached to him and fell under the impression that this was a kids book simply set in a violent pirate world. The pirate scenes continue throughout the story and begin to intertwine with Todd's life, until they become practically the same. I did find it sometimes difficult to keep up with everyone's story and background (thus had to go back and re-read some fragments), but I can't blame the writing/author. Apart from the Vanessa "Ness" character (which came off to me as a marysued one-trick pony), I found the pirates and much of the nobility interesting and sometimes likable. I think Eleanor "Spike" and Don were some of the most interesting characters. I like that some scenes and characters show some modern day DEI which may not contribute directly to the plot, but which feels organic and helps build the characters, giving them more depth and context.

Another thing I've enjoyed very much was the worldbuilding, from names, settings, descriptions, cultures and politics. Even the jokes or ironic jabs were pretty clever. There's definitely more lore to this world than the eye can see on first read and is the kind of book that allows you to learn something new upon each repeated reading.

Note that there is a lot of graphic violence in the book (including splattered brains, amputations, slit throats, flesh necklaces and more), as well as various mature themes; otherwise the young characters (such as Todd, Abbey or Heidi) and the fantastic world would be perfect for a children's book. I think the complexity of this story leaves lots of room for spinoffs.

I have received this book through the kindness of the author via Booktasters, in exchange for my honest opinion on it.

Here is my review for Sabre by C S Wood

This was an interesting book to read with the skuas involved. They are men trained to a very high standard. They fight for man and country. They show no mercy to anyone. Then, a young boy called, Todd Witherow, joins the Royal Skuas and he has to learn all the skills that are required. The Vice Admiral went missing off the ship and couldn’t be found anywhere. That meant Commander Grenyard took control of the ship, which was a bad thing for the men. Todd had been assigned to Sabre Squadron so he had to brave the seas, protect his new identity and avoid Grenyard’s wrath at all cost. Can Sabre Squadron save the day? This was a unique fantasy book to read with an adventure unlike any other. It was darkly intriguing with elements of surprise in it.

Blurb :

SABRE is a unique, fantasy adventure set in a gothic era with elements of steampunk.

The Royal Skuas rule the seas without mercy.

Just a boy, Todd Witherow is forced to join their ranks.

However, the chain of command is threatened. The vice admiral vanishes during a raid, allowing its vile orchestrator, Commander Grenyard to take control of the mothership. Assigned to Sabre Squadron, Todd must brave the seas, avoid Grenyard's wrath, and protect his true, newfound identity.

“Sabre: The Shattered Oath” by C.S. Wood is an entertaining and engaging fantasy novel.

This fast-paced, dark gothic, steam-punk style novel will leave you engrossed with both land and sea-faring adventures.

The kingdom of Cape Cadbey is in turmoil as greed and power by those who secretly oppose the king, with their deadly political schemes, are set to bring violence, in order to fill their pockets with the industrial revolution.

The Witherow family is torn apart, with the death of the eldest son and the imprisonment of the father, leaving the young Todd, to be taken by the Skuas’ to serve as mandated, onboard their armadas. Todd must learn to survive life under the charge of the depraved Commander Grenyard, whilst keeping secret his newly discovered identity, as a Merithian.

Bound with an intriguing history and dark lore, and a wide variety of characters this, albeit, short novel, is concise and extremely well written. The plot is impeccable and fast, with a high attention to detail, which will make you feel as a spectator of grand battle scenes.

The author does a magnificent role in building gruesome fights scenes and exploring the different customs, together with building the tension and the raw emotion felt by the characters. Not a single character is safe and with a will to survive, they must shatter their oaths.

The book contains a map and an appendix, with the emblems and hierarchy of each squadron, council and region, serving as a guide, to understand the journey travelled.

Highly recommend this novel, which is the first part of the trilogy. Eagerly anticipating reading the second book!

Thank you to the author and @booktaster_ on Instagram for sharing a copy of this book with me !!

“The world is run by selfish men, who don’t care to understand what’s behind their own doorstep. Don’t believe the history they’ve written. Don’t grow up to be like them. You’re better than that. Make your own decisions”

This book was entertaining in a way I was not expecting. Truth be told, I don’t even know what I was expecting coming into it. Only that I would have had a good time. And I did. I absolutely did. But then again, every book with pirate vibes always makes me happy. This time around we have a twisted version of found family abroad a pirate ship between people of different origins and different characteristics. Amongst the Industrial Revolution on earth, a new revolution is blossoming. One that will involve a young boy thrown into a world he can’t understand but to which he is undeniably bound thanks to his father and brother: the world of the Skuas. I really enjoyed the way the plot in this book developed, starting from the beginning with the terror of the eyes of a young boy, until the very end when the big revelation left me hanging for more. The hierarchical disposition of the characters and their role was kinda hard to grasp but slowly and steadily every piece got to the right place, and the Skuas and Merithians and Sabres all had a clear imagine in my head. And while the fantasy vibes of this book were absolutely interesting, the war and overall action happening was thrilling and enchanting !!! Overall, it’s a pretty amazing book to read !!!

SABRE: THE SHATTERED OATH by C.S. Wood is a wild ride that starts with a bang - literally, a violent pirate action scene that sets the tone for the rest of the book. But don't let that fool you, the story takes a sharp turn into the life of Todd, a young boy navigating a fantastic world with an ordinary life... until tragedy strikes. And boy, does it strike often.

As I devoured the book, I found myself getting attached to Todd and his story, only to be yanked back into the pirate world that initially drew me in. The two storylines eventually collide, creating a thrilling narrative that's hard to put down. One thing that did trip me up was keeping track of everyone's backstory and motivations - I had to revisit some sections to get my bearings. But that's on me, not the author( I was reading alor of books at the same time )- the writing is solid.

The characters are where the book truly shines. While Vanessa "Ness" felt a bit one-dimensional to me, the pirates and nobility are complex and intriguing. Eleanor "Spike" and Don are standouts, with personalities that leap off the page. I appreciate how the author weaves in modern DEI elements that feel organic and add depth to the characters.

The worldbuilding is also top-notch. From the clever names and settings to the rich cultures and politics, there's so much to uncover. And the humor! The jokes and ironic jabs are clever and spot-on. This book is the kind that rewards repeated reads, with new discoveries waiting around everything .
ps : it is violence so please be ready.

“ [...] You saw a darkness in me. You should have known that darkness would return… [...]”

I can confidently say that in 200 pages, author C.S. Wood created an interesting story. We have a lot of plots and many main characters here. I met, among others: Jared Kader, a 25-year-old sapper, Robert Simpson, a 19-year-old gunner, Oswald Leonard, vice-admiral, Vanessa Griffiths called Ness, Tony Archer, Eleanor Spike, Commander Grenyard, Lieutenant James Crawford and Sir Alan Witherow and his 10-year-old son Todd. Of course, there are many more characters in this book. Therefore, I advise you to read this story very carefully. Pay attention to every detail. This is very important to understand the whole story. This novel is very dark. Here you will encounter a lot of blood, pain, fear, murders and corpses. The perfect gothic story. I didn't expect such an ending, so I'm eager to know the continuation of this story. If you love sea adventures, I encourage you to read "Sabre. The Shattered Oath". The dark cover is also noteworthy. On the one hand, it is mysterious and attractive, and on the other, it causes shivers of terror. This story deserves your attention.
C.S. Wood has a very dark imagination, so I'm afraid of what fate will befall his living characters.
I refer you to the book "Sabre. The Shattered Oath" and I am already looking forward to the second part titled "Sabre. The Rise of the Night Devil".

Sabre The Shattered Oath is part one of the Sabre trilogy. The story follows the adventures if the sea fairing Sukas and also the politics of their homeland Arcaya and the kingdom of Cape Cadbey. The action starts straight away in chapter 1 as we join the Sukas mid heist and things don’t go as planned. We are also introduced to young Todd Witherow whose father is a much respected retired Vice-Admiral who has instilled a love of naval history and pride in the Sukas in his young son.

There are a lot of characters introduced as is to be expected in a book which introduces us to a trilogy set in a new world. There is a real feeling of steampunk innovation and invention as we explore Cape Cadbey whilst following the adventures of Todd, his father and the Sukas whilst they are in port. You want to learn more about this world and the tensions, challenges and politics of the kingdom but alongside that I loved learning about the history, life and customs of the Sukas. The importance of rank is clearly shown in their set up and the way they respect the chain of command whilst also being skilled and hardened warriors.

I am eager to read the second book and find out how the story will progress for Todd, the Sukas and quite a few other characters. A fantastic read which I’d highly recommend.

Great Book!

This is Book 1 SABRE. Part 1 - The Shattered Oath.

The book follows Todd who is forced to join the ranks of The Royal Skuas and assigned to the legendry Sabres.

This steampunk world is in the middle of a revolution and of course, this breeds evil.

What can I say about his book?
Well for starters - for 208 pages, a HECK of a lot is packed in there! It seems every single page holds action and interest so you don't lose interest.

I did find that I took a little time to get into the book but this was purely due to the fast pace. Usually other books of this genre are a bit slower (!) but when I got into the book, I thoroughly enjoyed it - definitely wasn't bored!

Todd is a great character for this story to revolve around as he is young and you'd think, impressionable but... he is not. It's really great to see him develop slowly.

The world that has been crafted is very dark and is very much like it is described - gothic which I enjoyed.

As the the story is split on land and also on sea, there is a lot of room there for C.S. Wood to expand the world which I am intrigued about!

We leave on a bit of a cliffhanger so this Bookstagrammer is watching out for Book 2!

A fab read and start to the series!

A copy of this book was supplied through Love Books Tours in exchange for an honest review.

-

For a length of 200 pages, this book has a lot going on. The first half is a slower pace than the second, building up a lot of this new world. We get the first twist around halfway, which adds internal conflict for Todd's character. From there, it's a rollercoaster to the end.

There's a large cast of characters and multiple perspectives that bulk out the drama as we see peril and danger across the whole cast. The battles are gripping and fast-paced, one in particular with a cruel, brutal ending, and another shows us that no character is really safe when sociopaths are involved. There's actually way more character death than I was expecting, considering the length of the story.

The author has chosen to use footnotes as part of the formatting, which could add to or detract from the readers' experience. In some cases these are to expand on the world building, and in others these simply provide definitions of words, such as 'frigate'.

This book would be great for those who prefer plot-driven narratives, and love fantasy sea-faring adventures ⚓️, dark, gothic tales of intrigue, or are looking for shorter stories that pack a punch.

A world in turmoil, a family separated, an epic fantasy adventure awaits.

In a time of political turmoil the once proud protectors, the Royal Skuas are under scrutiny as they rule the seas without mercy. Drawn into their midst is ten-year-old Todd Witherow, his father imprisoned; he must keep his identity a secret as he tries to survive mandated service within the Skuas’ ruthless ranks and under the command of the sinister Commander Grenyard.

‘The Shattered Oath’ is the first of a trilogy and sets up what I expect to be an epic fantasy adventure. This first instalment establishes within C.S. Wood’s world, separating Todd from his father and as corruption runs rife and the threat of revolution looms. You’re thrust into this turmoil as the world is built around you, learning more about the Skuas and the kingdom as we meet new characters. ‘The Shattered Oath’ is a gripping first instalment of a trilogy that has a lot of scope for expansion. I’m intrigued to see what happens in the rest of the trilogy.

I am not the biggest fan of fantasy, however, every so often one comes along that really piques my interest and that is exactly what this book did. It sounded so intriguing so I really wanted to read and review it, and I wasn't disappointed.

The book is well written with a story line that really gripped me right from the start and held my attention all the way through. I never felt bored or like the flow was lagging, which again is something I find with me and fantasy books so that was a very pleasant and welcome surprise.
The characters were well developed and perfect for the premise of the book in my opinion. I loved Todd and found myself really feeling for him and caring about what happened to him.

The world building in this book was incredible, in fact I would say that this book was mainly just world building with the promise of a lot more to come. I can't wait to read both in this series, and, the author in general.

Gripping and exciting! Im a sucker for anything with a gothic feel. A new world filled with adventure, action, a sailor pig, and a touch of romance. Great representation of needing and wanting to respect authority, versus the inner struggle of following your moral compass.

Loveable characters, although there are quite a few of them, keep on reading and you’ll get to know them really well.

I loved the imagery! This author truly has a way with words, the in depth descriptions and overall setup is beautiful! I was left with some questions that I’m excited to have answered in the second book which is Sabre Part ll: Rise of the Night Devil.

For sure while reading I often had the Pirates of the Caribbean soundtrack in my mind, because it fits so well. And who knew that this would be the book that finally taught me what the birds from Happy Feet are 😂
Skuas! ✨ The more you know ✨

‘Sabre’ is quite a surprising book. When I first heard of a Science fiction/fantasy novel with elements of steampunk, I wasn’t too sure what to expect but CS Wood really does pull this off and the result is a gripping and interesting novel.

‘Sabre’ is the first book in the series and sets the scene for what is to come. I really liked a lot of the characters, especially the children Todd and Abbey and the adult characters, Spike and Rob. I read this book quickly because I really wanted to know what was going to happen next. The whole world was tumultuous and deadly and I kept thinking about how difficult it would be to survive. I really want to know what happens next in this series.

I received a gifted copy of this novel. This review is my honest opinion and written voluntarily.

Wow! I haven't read many from the fantasy/steampunk/gothic genre, and I am so glad I got to be a part of this tour! What a read for such a short book - 14 chapters!. It is filled with so much action and adventure! This is the first of 3 books. I did find it a bit hard follow to begin with and to get into it, but once we got about 20% in, it, and I didn't want to put it down!

What I loved about this was the different perspectives, the character growth/development throughout, and the fact that it was across land and sea. This really did pack so much into it, and really lets you feel/imagine what the world that they are in is like, and just to leave us wanting more, it ends in a cliffhanger.... I can't wait to see what happens next!

This is a deep and fascinating story line.

I love Todd, Abbey, Rob, Spike, ect the sabre gang. I love their characters, they've been written so so well..

I cant wait to read part 2 to find out what happens next and if they can find oswald, alan and save the day from the evil guys.. as well as be reunited with the others.. (don't wanna give too much away)..

If I can be completely honest about something, there was points in like the first half that just seemed abit confusing, like who was working with you and whom is betraying whom. It makes sense in the end but I did just seem abit chaotic.

This book is the first in the Sabre series. I'd describe it as a naval thriller, though it felt like an adventure story too, and I enjoyed its gothic vibes. The storytelling had a raw, no-nonsense quality that both surprised and entertained me, and at times it seemed to be softened by slightly humorous exchanges between the characters.

I liked how the author worked with the ship as a setting, creating an atmosphere and bringing it and the characters to life. I also enjoyed the general design of the book, including the striking cover design and fonts used.

This was an entertaining read which suited my mood, and I plan to read the next book in the series as well.

I wasn't quite sure what to expect from this book, and my god, was I surprised!
This book was fantastic, it's was dark and gribbing, I couldn't sit still whilst reading, there was so much going on..

The world building and character development were excellent, and the plot was full of epic action, whilst also mysterious.
I truly couldn't put it down once I started, I read it within 3 hours.

Todd was was favourite, I was rooting for him throughout.

And with that slight cliffhanger ending, I am eager for the next instalment.

What the heck did I just read. Wow !! Talk about a book that just packed a punch from the first chapter that would be this book. Holy cow. This book mixes so many different elements I couldn't put it down. I mean this book is set in my favorite time the early 1800s.
There is a lot going on but I didn't feel lost or anything.
So much introducing but I felt it's a great way to really get into the story and it's a great set up for the next book which I'm patiently awaiting. Absolutely loved this read. I mean who wanted want to live in the 1800s.

An interesting read that talks about the Royal Skuas ruling the seas without mercy.

The Royal Skuas have protected their realm from the Merithian Empire for 200 years. Now, they face disbandment due to their growing power and brutality.

Todd Witherow is thrust into a challenging situation when the vice admiral goes missing. This allows the feared and cruel Commander Grenyard to take control of the mothership. Assigned to his brother's former squadron, Todd must navigate the dangers of war, endure Grenyard’s wrath, and safeguard his newly discovered identity.

Back home, the Industrial Revolution is in full swing, and a new resource called hycinthium-lapis has sparked wicked ambitions. King Oborus must defend his kingdom as corrupt lords plot a revolution, and tainted Skuas seek to gain power.

Only Todd's father, Sir Alan Witherow, can prevent disaster and ensure his son's return, but he is imprisoned by the very unit he once served.

Their lives and the fate of their kingdom lay in the hands of the legendary SABRES.

"The Shattered Oath" is the first part of a gothic fantasy adventure trilogy. This installment immerses the reader in a world in turmoil. Right from the start, the reader is captivated by a blend of mystery and tragedy as they embark on two intertwining adventures.

These journeys explore themes of friendships forged in blood, complicated romances, families torn apart by war, the struggle for survival in extreme conditions, and the bravery needed to resist tyranny—all centered around a notorious elite naval unit known as the Royal Skuas.

SABRE features many strong female characters in a male-dominated world. One notable character is Eleanor "Spike" Archer, who leads the legendary Sabres during their darkest days.

While many are forced into mandatory military service, Spike chooses to become a Skua after escaping her brutal childhood. She is swift, intimidating, and fiercely determined, much like a viper. However, to ensure her squad's survival and cohesion, she must develop the qualities of a true leader.

Under the guidance of the Sabres, Todd must navigate the challenges of war, come of age, and protect his true, newfound identity from ruthless commanders.

Fantasy fans should check out SABRE.

This novel uniquely blends dark fantasy and steampunk elements within a setting of 1803.

What a captivating read for such a short book—only 14 chapters! It’s filled with so much action and adventure. This is the first of three books in the series. I couldn't put the book down!

I ate this new fantasy up and want the next two installments of this trilogy and I am also going to go back and read C.S. Woods previous works.

I love the development of the main character and his interactions with the side characters. With it being a fantasy you do not expect a mystery to be inserted with characters going missing and unlikable characters are placed in their place. This means that the main character has to hide his identity and evade capture and imprisonment. At the end of the story I was routing for him and was fully invested in his story and need to see what happens next.

This is a dark, fast-paced, seafaring adventure story.

After the death of his older brother, Todd is forced to take his place in the Royal Skuas. The kingdom is on the brink of revolution and the Skuas reputation is not what it used to be.

The story moves fast and there are a lot of characters to keep track of, but I soon got used to this. The book is quite violent and shocking in places, and Todd’s childhood naivety is soon crushed. The world building is really interesting and I liked the steam punk element.
This is not my normal style of read, but I really enjoyed it. I'm glad I got the opportunity to try it and I'm eagerly awaiting the next installment!

From the striking front cover to the very end page I absolutely loved every page of this book 🤩
CS Wood brings us on an epic adventure across the seas with the Royal Skaus taking us along on dangerous raids and sea battles.

10 year old Todd Witherow is forced to join the crew after tragedy hits and then his father is imprisoned. Royal Skaus law states that every generation is to serve under them.

Todd finds himself amongst some very formidable and savage characters but also manages to find some friends along the way.

There was some truly jaw dropping moments throughout this book and brilliant twists I did not see coming!!

I don’t think I’ve ever read a book quite like this one and I thoroughly enjoyed CS Woods ability to create such a immersive world and awesome diverse characters 😍

Sabre is such an epic start to The Shattered Oath trilogy and I cannot wait for what’s to come!! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Sabre packs a lot of story into 200+ pages including action and politics revolving around The Royal Skuas.

This is part one of what I believe will be a much larger story and the novel is not set up to answer many of the questions it creates, but instead to set up the characters and back story that will progress into future books. Don’t let the lack of closure put you off though as this is a great story and I found this enticing enough to make me wish for part two now.

I really enjoyed this book. I loved the cover. Great story. I was gripped. Couldn't put it down. Some characters I liked more than others. I haven't read anything like this before. There wasn't anything in this book I didn't like. I was pulled into this book and it felt like i was there watching everything happen. Omg it was epic. This does end on a cliffhanger and I can't wait for the next book. 5*.

This is the first book in the new Sabre series - part 1 - The Shattered Oath - and I believe this will be a trilogy.

This isn't my usual go-to genre, but I was drawn in by the dark and creepy looking front cover and the fact that it was a pretty small book (in terms of the usual fantasy based books I usually see)

This did take me a little while to get to grips with, but mainly just the start where I was getting used to the world building and the initial presentation of the characters.
World building usually drags the pace of a book for me and I can often get bogged down through this, but here, the world building was built into the storyline well and the pace of the book didn't slow.
I both loved this, it meant that there was always something going on and had me racing through the chapters - but also felt that might be why it took me a while to get into.

Having said this - it didn't take too long before I was fully immersed in this dark and gothic world where the skuas took to both land and sea to protect their king and kingdom.

This was a super exciting read which was packed with adventure from start to finish.
Given the cliffhanger we were left with, I'd love to read the other books in the series - just promise me they're not going to be the standard 700 pages long 😬

Sabre, part 1 of The Shattered Oath series, which i understand will be a trilogy.

The creepy cover really drew me in, with the black and white background and dark character in the foreground. Red lettering really stands out for a great contrast.

I'm a big fan of the gothic/ fantasy / steampunk genre and Sabre really did live up to my expectations.

It's quite a short read but the author packs a whole lot in. It's a novel of action, adventure, battles, raids and swashbuckling. But it's also a novel of friendship, bravery and betrayal.

In quite a short novel, the author has created a rich and deep world with diverse characters.

I very much look forward to book 2.

4 🌟🌟🌟🌟's from me.
