Quotes:
Not wanting to be destroyed by despair doesn’t make you a coward. It makes you a survivor.

I do not believe ambitious men who say the only route to peace and prosperity lies in giving them more power—particularly when they do it with lands and people who are not theirs.
She told me to keep myself whole. That there wasn’t any shame in taking care of yourself in order to help those who needed you.

If you rule by violence, you should expect to be removed by violence.

That made it worse, this passing of a barbed baton between women who, no matter how clever, how powerful, would always be known by the men to whom they were attached.

You know, for all the lecturing I’ve heard about how emotional women supposedly are, we have nothing on the men I’ve known.

She didn’t want to talk about any of this. She survived trauma by suppressing it, by shoving back the grief and rage that would otherwise swallow her whole.

-I think I should like to learn to do this.
-Pick a lock? - She laughed. - Are you planning a future as a criminal in the human world?
-I like to keep my options open.

Greatness takes time Banu Nahida. Often the mightiest things have the humblest beginnings.

But I still believe, desperately, in the power of stories. If you take any message from this trilogy, I hope it is to choose what’s right even when it seems hopeless—especially when it seems hopeless. Stand for justice, be a light, and remember what it is we were promised by the One who knows better. With every hardship comes ease.

Dazed, he went through his ablutions. Then Ali stepped back, letting the crowd sweep him away as he surrendered to the familiar rhythm and movement of prayer.
It was like slipping into oblivion, into bliss, muscle memory and the murmured song of sacred revelation relaxing his tightly wound emotions and offering a brief escape.

-I cannot imagine how we fix all this," he confessed.
-Bit by bit. I find even the most impossible tasks seem less daunting from the inside. And we all have our own strengths, our roles to play.

You have been blessed; you have been granted the power, the privilege, the time—all these centuries you don’t want—to fix things. And when you finally do face our Creator, do you want to say you spent them wallowing in guilt? - Kartir’s expression grew fierce. - Or would you rather say you spent every extra breath fighting for a more just world?

It hurt worse to see your dreams destroyed than to never have them at all.

Sit with this burden, Dara. You may find doing so is easier than holding it over your head and waiting for it to crush you.
In what world do men and women pay the same price for passion?

Someone steals from me, I steal from others, and I'm sure the people I stole from will eventually take something that doesn't belong to them. It's a circle.

You're young, - he said quietly. - You have no experience with what happens to people like us during a war. People who are different.

Scattered minds are the enemy of magic.

-She can help with your economic policies when you're king.
-Yes, that's just what every man dreams of in a wife.

An outstanding series! I am not usually one for fantasy literature, but this series was recommended to me, and I absolutely loved it. Complex storylines, amazing visual descriptions, a wondrous, fantastical land. I was drawing out the last book because I didn’t want it to end.

The storyline speaks to some elements of social justice and there are a lot of strong female characters. I highly recommend.
