Birch Creek is probably my favorite series by this author. To see those characters show up in this book? Amazing! I loved the cross over and found that my ideas about where the big bad was headed might not be so true… Funny, engaging, fun, quick read and well worth your time!
We have arrived at Book 4 in the series and if you have not read the first 3 books this will not make a lot of sense. At the end of Book 3 we got introduced to Katerina who grew up rich and entitled and like the boys could shift into a horse. But unlike the boys she did not need Kristiana to wake her up. This book is different from the others in the series and not in a way that it is bad but it does not take place in Russia or Latvia. Bridget takes us on a journey this time which ends in the USA in a small town called Manila. Now if you have read some books written under her pen name B.E. Baker, you might recognize that name. The way that she has managed to merge characters from different books into this series is absolutely stunning. Katerina struggles in trying to figure out what is right and what is wrong, but when the world is so different from what you are used to, making that decision gets a lot harder. In this fourth installment we get to know our previous characters even better and are getting introduced to new ones. Gustav brings some turmoil into the story that makes it difficult to put down the book. I loved this book and when I heard that the original 5 book series is going to become a 6 book series, I was thrilled. I am anxiously awaiting book 5 which is the surprise book in the series and can only recommend this book to anyone; who is excited about adventure, horses, the unending love for family, good laughter, some scenes that make you swallow hard, and great friendship. Not to forget are the obstacles that make this book worth the read because the characters are written in a way that makes you feel like you are there with them, experiencing every hardship and joy with them.
I love how this book starts to tie things together. There is still so much mystery to keep you guessing and invested. BUT my favorite part was taking a trip to Birch Creek!! This is the crossover I didn't know I needed. I love Bridget's Birch Creek Ranch series and this book ties to that series for an epic crossover. If you haven't read the Birch Creek Ranch series you should go read it while you wait for the next horse shifter book to release. You won't be sad you did. You can fall in love with the characters like I did.
Anyway, to the review. I loved getting to know Gustav and learn why he left his home all those years ago and ignored Kris. I started out hating him for that. Honestly, I hated Katerina too, for being selfish but in true Bridget fashion she made me love the ones I thought I hated. Bridget is just that good. Will you want to scream, yes? Will you yell at them to shut up and listen? Yes. Will you feel all the feels and learn more about what the heck is going on with all the curses, magic and powers? Also yes. If you want to see bedroom explicit type scenes this is not for you. If you want clean shifter romance that has an amazing story, with well thought out and researched content and characters then this IS for you. The character development is so amazing to watch and we get to see all the couples from previous books which I love.
I can't wait to see what happens in the next book and if you've read this far then I suggest you go read this one so you can feel confident in your choice to pre-order book 5 because, hot horse shifters?! Am I right?
Bridget's done it again! This book differs from the previous ones in the series in all the best ways. We get to see Katerina's story (present AND past, which we didn't get for the other shifters) but we also get to see the point of view of Daniel/Gustav. This story pulls things together beautifully, pulling strings from the earlier titles together while leaving enough suspense and intrigue for the future stories. A true win tying not just Russian folktales but others together as well! MUST READ!
Everyone truly connects in this story, with a lot of parallels drawn that weren't seen before, and, for those that loved Bridget's Birch Creek Ranch characters, be prepared to fall in love again, as you'll see some short but significant parts played by some of your favorites! Also, make sure you get yourself to the very very end of all the little blurbs at end for a nice, and very welcome, surprise!
This was the last in this series, preordered the next in series, and now I must let the days roll along until it gets ready to fall into my hands. After I read the first one (I am partial to first person narratives), I ordered the second one thinking it would continue with the same characters (that’s how much I enjoyed it), so when I realized that wasn’t the case it was a bit disappointing; but it was also in the first person format so I settled to read it. Then the “Eureka” moment came. Different horses, different tales for each one but all previous characters still there in no way diminished but taken from a different viewpoint. What a beautiful way to tell a story! As if everyone is sitting around a table conversing and each taking turns as the conversation flows around the table. Enjoyed it immensely. What great imagination to create a whole realistic characters with their unique personalities and flawlessly have them interact that the tale flows along as a river might. Loved it!
Crossing The Big Ocean This time the story takes us from Russia to the US, where Kristiana’s brother Gustav lives and who is supposed to be the one to save the world from Leonid. When the three couples decide to cross the Atlantic, Katerina decides she is going too. Gustav is flabbergasted that horse shifters are linked to his family, especially at a very important moment in his life. In their search for a solution all of them travel to a long lost family member, who might have documents that can help them further. Great world-building, wonderful characters, linking two series, charming horses and the Western horse sports, Bridget knows what she writes about! I had wonderful time reading about this new pair and everything that happens with all of them on their way to solve the problems they are faced with. Highly recommended, I couldn’t put it down!
Disclaimer, I'm a Bridget Baker literary fan....but I became so through just loving her stories. This 4th book of the Russian Witch's Curse series is a storming success. Pulling the threads of the previous 3 books and intertwining them with characters from her Birch Creek series whilst delivering an action-filled plot into a totally absorbing novel. Bridget mixes the magical with the mundane beautifully. The interaction between the characters is meaningful and their personalities would stand even if you removed the magical element. Her characters are well-rounded, flaws and all, so you could forget you are reading something in the fantasy genre. There is danger, pursuit, familial manipulation, high finance and, of course, horses! What's not to love? I have already pre-order book number five.
This book follows a similar line of the horse-shifting Russian royalty having been cursed for 100 years. It tells the tale of the mysterious Katerina and you aren’t sure if you hate her or tolerate her for part of the book. The flashbacks of her younger life really help flesh out who she is, why she acts the way she does, and also gives more context to the lives and actions of the other Russians. A main character living in America is introduced into the mix and there is a crossover to Baker’s Birch Creek Ranch series (highly recommend the series!). Daniel AKA Gustav is one of the most relatable characters in the Russian Witch’s Curse series and turns out to be a power player in a way he never dreamt. Another fun read from Baker!
Such an exciting book that includes characters from Bridget's Birch Creek Ranch series. I was surprised at how the characters of these 2 series were brought together and can't wait to see how this story continues to unfold in the next book of the series.
The main character's of this book truly come into their own. They learn that what they thought they wanted is not really what they want. Come on this journey, as they make decisions that will drastically change the course of their future. Bridget's writing is engaging and she has a wonderful ability to cross her characters across genres. I am always impressed with her character development throughout her series.
The Russian Witch Curse saga continues as the gang needs to find Kristiana’s brother in the United States and get him to beat Leonid. I really enjoyed this book as Daniel/Gustav is blindsided by the truth of his family right as he’s about to get the desire of his heart, or what he thinks is his heart’s desire. My favorite part of the book though is when we are some beloved characters from B.E. Baker’s Bequests series. We had a tease in The Lookback that there was a relation to the Liepa family but I honestly didn’t expect this. 5 stars all around!!
This incredible series continues and once again I found myself sucked back into this incredible world as this time we journey to the USA. Katerina is rich, entitled, smart and can shift into a horse like our previous characters. There’s conflict and doubt, mayhem and chaos as the gang search for Gustav and we get to see some old friends as well as make some new ones. Full of adventure, love, life, family and magic, this is one hell of a ride as you experience these changes, obstacles, hardships and twists and turns and once started, I could not put this down!
🪢My Wild Horse King🤠 was the most recent of the four and the penultimate in the series. This one was I think the most realistic reaction to being a horse shifter. I found the MMC to be quite refreshing in doing his best to adjust to this new and crazy world. There was more magic, and even more tension between all the characters. I loved the training montages lol. This one held more humor, and the slow burn romance was *chefs kiss.
I liked parts of it, but it’s frustrating how the protagonists from the previous books act like jerks here. If I don’t like the characters what’s the point of this book? And it felt like things ended very unfinished. I’m really not enjoying the stupid teaser chapters at the end of the story that are completely focused on the next book, especially when we haven’t even been introduced to these characters yet! I like books to end happy and show some of the happy in the epilogue so the book ends on a satisfying note. Bleh!
this one kinda lost me. I think it was the move to New York. just not a magical place, and I have a hard time with a horse in New York. Tho, I did like how each book I was sympathizing with the main characters, and in this one, as it's written from a different characters point of view, I kinda hated those same characters, which I think is clever writing. there wasn't quite as much wit and humor in this one either. but just like the other in the series, I appreciate how the romance is sweet and not graphic.
This was such a fun book to read! I really felt like the characters were relatable and the conflicts seemed so realistic. They took time to resolve, and there were meaningful sacrifices. I felt like there was a bit of a faster pace to this book and there were so many things learned about the world and their past, it was amazing! It was still swoony and funny and all things we can expect from Bridget. I think this might be my favorite so far!!
3.5 stars Chapter 26 is very soppy and I hate that I also found it kind of adorable but also really not a fan of soppy-ness so it made for a bit of an awkward read.
Everything else was on par with the rest of the series so far. The beginning was kind of rough and involved enough assholery that you kind of love to hate the characters, but overall I can definitely appreciate the slightly less shiny and perfect MCs and how much growth everyone has to go through to get to the end game
This fourth installment of the horse shifter books takes you across the pond to America, where we meet a few new characters but still get to read about our favorites from the previous three books in this series. This book keeps you wondering what will happen next and what twist we will see! And leave you wanting to know what happens next!
I'm having to force myself through this one. It's so boring. I know her characters grow during her stories, but I just don't like Katerina nor Gustav. Gustav should have the power to shift into a donkey because he's just an @. And all the powers and lineage makes no friggin sense, and makes less sense with each book. I just want to be done with this one.
The characters were very enjoyable, I love the dual POV and the connection to a different series. Personally, it felt like there wasn't much conflict, which could be setting up for the next book. The romance still hits just like every other Bridget E Baker book. Overall super enjoyable and addicting (I couldn't put it down, so read it in an afternoon).
Do I read these books because they're unpredictable page turners? No. But- I find myself really enjoying this series, nonetheless. It's a great "brain break" for me between other book series, and I know that these books will always be enjoyable. The characters and plot might be predictable, but it's so well written, I could care less. I've already bought the next one. (。◕‿◕。)
Very nice addition to the series. The group comes to America to bring Gustav back into the picture. Chaos ensues and things get fairly rough. Read the series in order - otherwise you will have no idea what is going on. And it is a real fun ride!
This just makes me want to go hug a horse and hope it's a magic one! The learning about hope even in the face of impossible odds is delightful to see! And of course the love between the people/couples is heartfelt! More soon?
I think this my favorite magical series, ever! I love the fantasy, the horses, the characters and the plot. I'm surprised that Baker entwined this with Birch Creek. Can't wait to read the next installment and see what trouble ensues
I love this series! It is a series that needs to be read in order. If you don't, you will be very confused. It also has a cross-over to her Birch Ranch series. I'm so excited to read the next book! Hopefully, we won't have to wait to long.
Recovering from a cold and able to binge read the last 3 books has been pure joy. The characters, the relationships and family stories have been incredible. Lashed with love and laughter with memories of magic. Thank you , I loved them!
I liked how the characters develop and how everything just seems to flow like a river. There are twists and turns but you know you're heading on an adventure. Looking forward to the next book in this series.
I loved the fourth installment of this series. More powerful characters, more stubborn siblings and friends, and a crossover with characters from the Birch Creek Ranch series.
