This book written by an African safari guide is from a time when this practice was considered to be manly and adventurous. The men's adventure magazines of this books publication year of 1954 regaled readers with tales of the big white hunter killing African wildlife like elephants and lions. Hunting elephants for their ivory and a trophy head in our era is considered a loathsome practice today since elephants are an endangered and beloved species. The first chapter involved hunting monkeys for their sex glands as a cure for male impotence which would disgust people as inhumane and superstitious. I did not know there were so many recipes for wild African game like hippo aning d antelope and that section was very informative. Other chapters on witch doctors, snakes, and other subjects were also enlightening. The Mau Mau insurgents did not get a fair depiction since there was no mention of the ill treatment by colonial authorities that made them take up arms. This book is a relic of an earlier time in history that would not be available today except on Internet Archive.

A wonderful book recounting the experiences of a "great white hunter" in Africa's golden hunting years. Nothing like it will ever happen again! The stories are interesting and exciting and definitely from a bygone era.
