I received this book for free through a giveaway on LibraryThing. The following is my honest review.
Personal Finance for Teens Simplified is a terrific tool to help parents teach their teens about personal finance. Many teens (and their parents) lack the financial literacy skills to make good money choices early on. The book is written for parents yet many teens could read the book for themselves. It breaks down money lingo in simple terms and language. I thought I had good financial knowledge yet even I learned a few things. The book also gives helpful actionable steps and ideas from earning and saving to investing. I especially liked how the author stressed that your teen WILL make mistakes with their finances but he encouraged parents to let their kids learn from those mistakes and model for them what good financial decisions look like.
I recommend this book for every parent of teens, and I plan on going through this with my kids as they become teenagers. I'd love to see a book/workbook geared towards young people based on this book.
First of all this is a book about good, general advice for everyone. The author tends to just tell the parents they need to tell their teen the things in the book. So this isn't really a "for teens" but a "for parents" and more so "in general".
So there's nothing here that's wrong and it's fairly straightforward advice (save money, don't get in debt, learn what stocks and credit is, budget). So, on one hand, I've got nothing to complain about with the material. But, on the other hand, this really isn't a book to hand to kids or anything in the material that's newly slanted for the intended audience.
While the contents would make for a good blog series, it's nice to have in a one-book format. If you're a parent who has the general good habits of finances, there isn't anything here you won't already know and do.
I was given a free copy of "Personal Finance for Teens Simplified: 7 Easy-to-Learn Strategies for Conquering Debt, Understanding the Value of Money, and Achieving Financial Independence", via LibraryThing. This was an easy-to-read book with lots of common-sense ideas to teaching teenagers all about finances. The author introduces several different approaches to accommodate most households. The book was rigorously researched by the author. Well written and a good guide for parents of teenagers.
