I am so starved for good sapphic representation in the fantasy genre, and unfortunately it leads me to read any amount of self-published books. the problem with self-publishing isn’t the ideas- they are actually really good! it’s the lack of editing, pacing, and story progression. it’s just messy. the story is there, but i found it so hard to be immersed in the world the author was trying to build, because i was so focused on why the lack of character motivations beyond the superficial, the odd pacing, and the strange introduction of seemingly random characters at every turn. i think this could be a really good book if it went through a few rounds of “big-picture” editing.
I absolutely adore this book, this is everything a dnd fantasy, cottage core magic lover needs. Also the love between rei and Amora is just perfect. Had me giggling and kicking my feet. I simply wish this book would be so much longer.
If you love cozy cute sapphic fantasy this one is for you!
I've been lucky enough to receive the ARC of this story and now I can say I LOVED it. The romance was my favourite thing, the chemistry between the main characters was so good! I also loved the setting, it was very well written and it reminded me of Legends and Lattes. Also I have to say the cover is stunning💕
OMG I LOVE THIS BOOK 😭💗 IMMA WRITE AN ACTUAL REVIEW AFTER IM DONE W WORK BUT OMG I CANT BREATHE
———————————————————————————
🌷 ACTUAL REVIEW:
actual rating: a million out of 5 ⭐️s !!
this book exceeded all of my expectations that i had plus some! like this book was such a beautifully written book imo. i loved that the author had them build tension in such a natural way. i loved the banter they had, i loved the adventure they went on throughout the story, i loved the side characters; i just LOVED THIS BOOK OMG ! 😭💗 i don’t know how else i can express my love for this book lmaoo
my favorite characters were both of the MCs: rei & amora. i loved all the side characters that were friends of rei!
the tension between the two MCs >>>>>> omg it was sooo good. literally better than any spice scene i’ve ever read 😭💀. with that being said, there was a little bit of spice but it’s very minor, just steamy make out sessions honestly!
but, anyways, to close out this review i just want to say that this was such a good book and that i loved every second of it & i’m waiting for the day that i can reread this book again and again 🫶🏾💟✨
This was such a fun book to read! Magic and sapphic, sign me up! Had me hooked from the beginning. The relationship is a bit of a slow burn for me but nothing wrong with that. I really loved Amora and Rei’s relationship, the grumpy/sunshine trope is so entertaining. Wish there was a bit more passion behind their relationship but I understand this is more fantasy than romance.
I loved the character building for each person and how the world came together. I really felt like I could imagine the places they were at. Vern and Bezzie were fun side characters.
My favorite thing about this book was how sassy Rei could be but also a little cinnamon roll at times.
Thank you so much Marissa Serrao for allowing me to read an ARC of Between Mischief and Magic!
This was such a cute saphic fantasy romance book. I absolutely love the 2 main characters and I love that it was from the point of view of Rei the succubus. I am so excited for the next one. I absolutely enjoyed reading this!
Received as a gift and decided to read for Sapphic September. This desperately needed editing to help with pacing. Felt like a first draft that needed a lot more work.
They spend the first half of the book walking on foot to systematically talk to every person the MC has ever met for help with a magical problem, and find the information they need when they meet with the last person on her list, a magical witch who can see the future. Okay why not start with her? What’s up?
Just because there’s a pink succubus who doesn’t like to seduce people, and a green other fantasy being that loves lattes and cinnamon rolls doesn’t make it a cozy fantasy adventure or a great book. Every time they had another latte I almost internally combusted.
Shout out to MC having traumatic flashbacks to her cheating ex boyfriend being hit by a horse drawn carriage while he was holding croissants, whenever she sees a pastry with red jam (because blood is also red like his dead blood on that croissant)
Everything is shallow and one note, equal time seems to be spent solving small problems (renting a room) and huge events (saving the love interest from murder when she runs away into the forest) etc.
If it wasn’t a gift I would’ve DNF’d. I skimmed repetitive descriptions of baked goods and other repetitive dragging portions.
conflicts were contrived but not solved satisfactorily (you just stop having moral qualms about stealing souls or start falling in love when the plot needs you to?). Within a page or two you’ll have demonic murder and sipping lattes and eating cinnamon rolls while petting kittens, and the tone was not well-established for either.
Wouldn’t read this author again, this isn’t their first book so it’s not like a clumsy debut issue either. Sapphic September: magical sapphics, indie/small press, sword sapphics, new/new-to-me author, less than 1000 GR reviews, choose your own prompt (already own, as it was a gift).
I never really understood when someone says they love a “cozy book” and now I do!
This was a super cute, low stakes story- and I really enjoyed it. All the characters were loveable and it was an easy read. If you are looking for something that wont leave you anxious but will make you feel good- this is it.
the pacing through me off too much would happen then nothing would happen. we'd be told something happened during a scene that was explained but instead of info dumping it why not just write the scene out so we could see it as it happened. rei would be so focused on consent and the good witches testing them only for it to be so casual about killing a man who may be a jerk but we don't know because oops he's dead now oh well. gave me whip lash. the foundation of a great story are here, but the execution could have been a lot better. cozy fantasy are my favorite I loved legends and lattes and wanted something like that but I feel like the story fell flat. to much exposition we'd have multiple things happening on a single page. that could be a personal preference. I struggled to finish this book because it didn't feel immersive
Frankly, this was a disappointing read. I was intrigued by the premise and excited by the first chapter or two. Ultimately, the story fell flat for me, and at times it felt like a first draft. If the author had stuck with a cozy, low-stakes plot, I think it would have been better, but it felt like the author couldn’t decide what they wanted for the story. The romance wasn’t believable, the characters weren’t fleshed out, and at any point I would have been fine putting the book down and not finishing it. The only reason I finished at all was because it was a book club pick. I do like both Amora and Rei, but I wish that their romance had been more convincing and that they’d been more developed as characters.
Thank you to Marissa Serrao and Broken Wing Press for providing me with an ARC of this title to read and review. I am absolutely honoured to have been chosen to receive this ARC!
I read this book in two sittings and I will absolutely be neglecting my TBR to read it again within the next few months. This book is absolute MAGIC - pun intended.

At this start of this book, you are immediately confronted with the unhappy moment Rei is kicked out of the house she shares with her brother. Within the hour she is seated at the local Inn's bar with a glass of magic-laced wine without any idea of what to do with her mess of a life or where to go beyond her room at the Inn. Here enters Amora, the runaway princess on a quest to find her missing magic and in need of a guide. The two enter into an agreement that Rei will be her guide and, once Amora has regained her magic, Rei will be rewarded with a position as her advisor.
As the plot continues on from their meeting, we see our two FMCs ever so slowly open up to each other as they journey through various parts of the Kingdom to hopefully uncover the Princess's missing magic. It is very easy to see the sparks of chemistry between the two from the beginning - their interactions and growing longing for each other is written so, so well! I don't doubt that you will be giggling and falling in love with them just as I did.
Their relationship aside, the storytelling in this book is lovely. There is a very clearly laid out world and while you may not get the more intricate details into every aspect like you would in a series - it feels full, layered, and endearing. The small details and background of this world and the characters sprinkled throughout the story don't feel like information clumsily pushed into the story for the sake of it.
This book has earned its place as one of my favourites and Marissa is now an author I will follow for any future releases!
If you're looking for a charming romance with the needed fantasy element, get a copy of this book and settle in with your favourite snack!

*4.5 rounded up*
This book was super freaking cute and cozy!! I never wanted it to end, the world was full of magic and fun creatures. The imagery was very colorful and it transported you right into the magical setting.
My favorite thing about this book was for sure the characters! Our main two, Rei and Amora, are the cutest most lovable women. They're very different and distinct from one other, but share such a beautiful relationship. All of the side characters were super fun and memorable as well! They each had their own pretty well rounded personalities and I loved that they all worked together in the end. Omg and Vern 🐈⬛ I'm obsessed, he's my favorite in the book.
My only fault with this book was that the plot was a little slow at some points. About a quarter to halfway through it kind of lost me and I felt myself not caring as much for the storyline. But that's the thing about a cozy cottage core romantasy: the plot doesn't have to be the main focus. I was a lot more interested in the characters and their relationship, but towards the end it definitely grabbed my attention back to the plot.
Overall, I loved the adventures in this book and if you're looking for a cozy fantasy I definitely recommend it! I'll 100% be reading more of Serrao's Love X Magic books, can't wait for the next one!
This book was great. I have had it on my tbr for awhile now and i finally got to read it this weekend! I love the characters and they are really easy to get attached to. I like Rei and i love to see her growth throughout the book. My favorite part for sure was towards the end when princess amora gets hr magic back and she is with nature and rei is waiting for her. I loved how their bond develops as the story progresses. I was so glad to see them be able to take the kingdom back and start the healing. It was so sweet when the dragons came back!!! I’m so glad i was able to read this before the next book in this series comes out!!!
I enjoyed it but I couldn’t help feeling like there could have been more, a bit more milking (the characters and the situations) and it would have been an epic quest meeting all those woodland characters and fighting off enemies. I also feel like the author missed the mark, having a SUCCUBUS as a main character and not capitalising on that in the love scenes was just… sad? It’s just my two cents.
this book was EVERYTHING i needed. magic and demons and adventure and wine and sapphic love and mischief and chaos. the magic is so PALPABLE!!! i can’t get enough of amora and rei. their banter and humor is so fun. the way they love each other is so pure and fierce. my only complaint is that it’s over already.
I was so fortunate to receive an ARC of this novel.
Below is a snippet of my swirling thoughts of it. Enjoy
The ever creeping fondness of one another grows and develops as the world building opens up around the reader. The two FMCs really have a beautiful balance of strengths and weaknesses that show the reader how much they stabilize one another. As the timeline progresses you learn how guarded they are as individuals. Much like in relationships today. This doesn’t stop Rei’s hunger to move mountains for Amora. I caught myself one sentence after another falling in love with the Authors descriptive writing but also the ability to put so much passion within each passing sentence. Marissa Serrao envokes this deep craving for the reader to dig deep into the immersing story. It truly will pull at your heartstrings, we all long for that deep affection, to be craved by another.
“Every cell in my body was consumed by my absolute admiration for this woman.”
And that is something the Author has truly accomplished to connect her readers to this consuming novel. The magic of Chapter 24 will give you full body chills no doubt. Please whatever you do, no second guesses this book is a magical delight.

Thank you to Marissa Serrao for providing me with an ARC of 𝑩𝒆𝒕𝒘𝒆𝒆𝒏 𝑴𝒊𝒔𝒄𝒉𝒊𝒆𝒇 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝑴𝒂𝒈𝒊𝒄! I'm so grateful to have the opportunity to read this lovely book
⟡
I really enjoyed 𝑩𝒆𝒕𝒘𝒆𝒆𝒏 𝑴𝒊𝒔𝒄𝒉𝒊𝒆𝒇 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝑴𝒂𝒈𝒊𝒄, it was so sweet and cozy and the characters were so endearing. It's similar to The Demon of the Wood and Legends & Lattes, which I loved, and I really recommend it if you're looking for a cozy, lighthearted read that still has plenty of plot.
The world was very nostalgic like OG fairytale stories with a whole host of fae and demon creatures and I loved how you're not bogged down with worldbuilding or info dumping but you're still fully absorbed and swept away.
The main characters are different but both are very likeable. This is a great sapphic romance, you see them go from strangers to friends to lovers and their relationship is very intimate and sweet. They are very endearing and I really enjoyed their banter and the development of their relationship.
I love Bezzie and the cat/monster Vern, I thought that was a really unique way of using the animal sidekick trope! My only complaint is that I wish the side characters were more fleshed out, Rei says by the end they had become a family but it didn't really feel like that.
The writing and story flow really well, there were no boring or skimmable parts. I was always interested and it was fast paced without being rushed, everything was to the point without being blunt.
This is also one of the only books that had the third act separation that didn't make me want to tear my hair out, it was done really well and actually contributed to the relationship so I really liked that. And can I just say I am so happy that this book didn't play into the "awful parent gets a redemption arc" trend that seems to happen a lot.
Overall I really enjoyed 𝑩𝒆𝒕𝒘𝒆𝒆𝒏 𝑴𝒊𝒔𝒄𝒉𝒊𝒆𝒇 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝑴𝒂𝒈𝒊𝒄 and I can't wait to read the next book and I will definitely be checking out the authors other books!

💜🔮 My Review 🔮💜
This book made the magical world feel so real, cozy, and dangerous at the same time. Magical woods, large spiders, and lost magic. Banter that would rival that of Flynn Rider & Rapunzel, but is just as charming and slow burn romance as that of Rei and Amora. I wanted to go to Ossa's shop and have gooey buns and cinnamon tea, explore books and secrets. 🐈⬛ Cavernicus "Vern" the magical cat stole my heart! I also was fascinated by the Coven Of The Deep. I couldn't stop reading this book or thinking of the character's in this beautiful story. The slow burn and moments of romance felt earned, plus the coziness that was balanced by the darker moments made this one of my favorite books of 2024 so far!
Another win by Marissa Serrao! If you haven’t heard of this author before, Marissa’s an indie author that writes cozy fantasy books with high stakes. This is her third book, her two previous books Seeking Nessabella and Seeking the six are part of an ongoing series, highly recommend those! This book is also part of a series, Love x magic, but they are stand-alones! The next book in this series comes out this August.
This was a sapphic cozy romantasy between a half demon succubus, half satyr, Rei, and a magicless dryad princess, Amora, Throughout the book they go on a quest to retrieve Amoras magic, to be able to save the kingdom. The chemistry between Rei and Amora is sizzling of the pages, and their little enemies to friends to lovers is lovely. As with her previous books, the worldbuilding is astonishing. If truly feels like I’m there, I can taste the food, I can smell the scents, I can feel the moss and flowers. Truly a magical world, but of course, riddled with things that can kill you 😅
I saw parallells from LOTR with Mirkwood and the spiders. Also Guardians of the galaxy with the cat, the Flerken cat you know? I’ll just leave it at that 😂😼 And I also got vibes from Legends and lattes, which is one of my favourite cozy fantasy books. I can’t wait for the next book in this series, even though I would have wanted more from Rei and Amora, I’m excited to meet new characters in ”Between salt and serenades”! Love, love, loved it! Highly recommend! Especially now for pride month you guys! 🌈
Between Mischief & Magic is a cozy, magical, queer romance filled with quirky characters, adventure and plenty of wine! If you're fan of the mystical found family of Shrek and the cozy fantasy of Legends & Lattes, this may be your next read.
Everything about this romance was so sweet! BMAM has all of your favorite tropes: strangers to lovers, grumpy x sunshine, close proximity, found family, and one bed. I absolutely loved the dynamic of Rei and Amora's relationship. Opposites attract and where Rei guides Amora through this journey to find her magic, Amora guides Rei through a journey of self-acceptance, purpose, and belonging.
Outside of the main characters, we meet so many unique creatures along the way! There's boggarts, witches, brownies, and so much more. Oh, and did I mention, man-eating cats?...Because BMAM has those too! I thought the pacing was perfect. This is a quick read, however, Marissa has packed a whole lot of storyline and character development into this that you'll definitely love.
BMAM is full of whimsy, magic, love, and warm. I'm excited to see what Project Salt holds and if we'll see any familiar faces in this upcoming standalone. Thank you so much Marissa for allowing me an ARC in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.
So I picked this up from seeing it show up on Tiktok over and over again. I was always interested, but I’m doing a reading challenge when my friends and this book fit a particular prompt. So I started it yesterday and finished it in two days.
It follows a half Succubus and half satyr woman named Reo as she helps a princess survive long enough to find her lost magic. It’s got major cozy fantasy vibes. While there are stakes this is far from an epic fantasy.
Rei, the MC, is really interesting to follow. Being part demon has created certain ideas about who she should be, but being with Amora, the LI, she helps her to embrace the other parts of herself as well. Her magic is very powerful, but she’s reluctant to delve into just how powerful it is. I think that’s an interesting comparison to Amora who doesn’t have magic of her own.
I know that this is the start of a series. I think the next one is taking place underwater? No idea how that’s going to go, but I’ll definitely be picking that book up too. Even if we don’t get to see Rei and Amora again, it’ll be nice to be back in this world.
I started reading this book after my heart was shattered by another book, and Between Mischief and Magic was exactly the hug I needed—a warm, whimsical embrace that glued my heart back together and then adorned it with sprinkles, a flower, and maybe even a mischievous spark of magic. Following Rei and Amora on their journey—to restore Amora’s magic and help Rei find her place—was an absolute delight. Their adventures were sweet, fun, and endlessly entertaining, filled with moments that made me laugh, swoon, and cheer for them every step of the way.
"I might be filled with the very thing killing her, but I'd be damned if that stopped me from loving her."
If you love cozy fantasy with a vibrant found family, enchanting feline companions (because yes, the cats are everything), and two fiercely compelling female leads whose bond is as heartwarming as it is empowering, then this book is for you. Marissa Serrao has crafted a story that feels like sipping a cup of tea under a blanket of stars—comforting, magical, and utterly unforgettable.
This is the kind of book you’ll want to revisit whenever you need a little extra light in your life. An easy five-star read!
The whimsical nature of this story truly had me spellbound.
I feel that Marissa has done such an amazing job of crafting a story full of such cozy vibes while also being stuffed full of a quest, a demon, a princess and of course plenty of magic.
Character development for both of Rei and Amora is a joy to read as they not only find each other but themselves as well.
I feel that this book is exactly the break that I needed, stepping into this world was refreshing and left me feeling all warm and fuzzy. Such contrasting personalities from both FMC’s make for such amazing banter throughout as they continue on their quest though different environments meeting different magical creatures. This journey allows for us to meet a whole host of characters, each one carefully crafted so that even when meeting them for a short time you get a great sense of their personality.
You honestly can’t help fall in love with the characters throughout this book, with a great balance of humour and emotional moments this book is a perfect book to snuggle up with.
