Gerry Duggan continues to intertwine the worlds of Iron Man and the X-Men!
With the X-Men facing extermination at the hands of Orchis and their Stark Sentinels, Iron Man — now married to Emma Frost — is desperate to make things right. To do that, he’ll need more than an armor — he’ll need an army. But who will answer the call? And can they possibly pull off every element of his impossible plan? As D-day approaches, Iron Man will face his new nemesis, Feilong. Get ready for the biggest clash of armor you’ve ever seen! But will even an unlikely alliance between Iron Man and Magneto be enough to take down every Sentinel on Earth? Featuring Ironheart and War Machine! And when the war with Orchis is over, what does the future hold for Tony and Emma?
The final volume of Iron Man tight with the X-Men seasons sees the iron Avenger change his role from being part of the mutant resistance to being part of the X-men led resurgent force taking on ORCHIS< Feilong, Sentinels, Nimrod etc. This series failed for me focusing too much on the X-Men universe and not enough on Tony Stark and say, his bearing and relationship with the mutants. His relationship of convenience with Emma Frost felt very thin and one dimensional. The only real plus is seeing Iron Man truly stand with the marginalised mutants. I have to admit one could skip this entire series and not really miss anything of consequence in Fall of X! 2026 read
Ending was a mess, and I jumped off the Krakoa age ship a bit too early to fully appreciate this Fall of X tie-in, but Duggan's run was still a solid and entertaining one, with a few great moments. And the Emma and Tony's "marriage" was genuinely funny and enjoyable, in my opinion.
Such a shame it didn't last any longer.
3.5 stars, rounded up because I mostly enjoyed the ride.
I’ve never read an Iron Man comic before but I’ve really liked these last two volumes and everything he’s done for the mutant race. This wraps stuff up so well and perfectly sets up the future. I can’t wait to see who would be on this new West Coast Avengers team!!
I really never expected to care about Iron Man, even in the context of Krakoa and Emma Frost, but here we are. This was a great finale to Gerry Duggan’s run. I’m still eager to see how it fits into the overall Fall of X story when I read Fall/Rise. Tony’s got a lot of heart, and there’s plenty of badassery in this volume. Rhodey and Emma get their moments, too.
One issue in particular, #17, had a standout artist in Patch Zircher. It had a very retro feel with the coloring and other elements, while still as crisp and bright as a modern comic style. I loved every panel of it.
Decent and predictable end as far as Tony and Emma go. Rhodey's subplot is tied too. All things considered the whole run was good and I reckon Duggan is more at ease with individual characters than team series.
The story is ok, but it seems that the artwork became more and more... well, ugly (I can’t pretend that I’m not seeing this pattern in other comics as well, wich is sad).
4.25 I came to Love this run. Emma and Tony just worked. I'd like to see it continue. Iron Man as part of the Fall of X story worked. Good vilians and a decent character arc. It just felt like it mattered and the stakes were real.
This should really be considered the end of the Krakoan Era, as the last issue deals with the fallout of the war against Orchis. I've enjoyed Iron Man more when he was connected to the mutants, which says more about my reading habits than anything else. Highlights: - Ironheart and Forge build starships with mysterium on Nidavellir - Mark 72 - Mysterium Armor..... but Mark 73 - Sentinel Buster! - Feilong to Magneto "You stole Mars from me Magneto!" His response to Feilong "I don't know who you are." EPIC BURN - Emma finances Tony with Hellfire money as they end things.... but maybe something in the future. - West Coast Avengers? Awesome!
Overall, a really great read. Looking forward to what is next for Tony and Rhoady. Recommend.
This was such a fun ending to the whole trilogy! I freaking loved this volume!
I love how we have Tony and Emma on a space adventure and the way the skrulls replaced them was funny and actually quite an innovative idea and then there is the deal with them coming back to earth with more Mysterium and then you see what role Riri and Forge have and what they are making and how they tie in with the big plan that Tony has and I love it, there's also a story about her vs a dragon and the rings that tie into it, its released quick.. I guess they didn't want Riri to have the rings but I am hoping there is a follow up to that!
The big battle between Tony and Feilong starts here with his Sentinel buster and his Stark sentinels and my god its crazy, its the outback of Austrailia vs all this carnage and destruction and its just good old fight between the armors and there are obvious twists and a lot of it gets wrecked and it goes for a lot longer than I hoped it would but its fun and then enter Magneto, the double betrayal and that epic conclusion and how that tied into Fall of X!
I also like how we see where Rhodey is and his next plans and what he wants to do next and I love the way the friendship between the two of them have been built up here and it will be fun to read WCA!
The conclusion to Tony and Emma's marriage.. well we saw it coming.. its comics so a big change like that usually gets undone in the end of the run or at some point but still it was fun while it lasted and really brought out a side of Tony I kinda didn't know existed and for what its worth, Emma's presence really did change Tony maybe for the better1
I loved the whole run and its definitely one of the better ones! Looking forward to reading the next run now and maybe rereading this at some point too!
4/5. I really dislike the forced plot of the" Iron -Diamonds wedding". I used to read Iron Man as soon as each issue came out, but this made me put it off for a year and a half, until the end of Invincible Iron Man V5 before I caught up. Objectively speaking, I quite like Duggan's writing, which far exceeds that of his predecessor. The plot he designed is tight and has the flavor of classic Iron Man comics, with concise language and well-developed characters.
As for the cliché "marriage first, love later" romantic trope, I can only say that it's relatively logical under the pressure of "writing to a prompt." Duggan managed to make it work with minimal damage to Tony Stark's original character setup (after all, one of Tony Stark's core traits is being a "playboy"). From the author's afterword, it seems he wasn't too fond of the "prompt" he was given. His thanks to Mark Waid for throwing this "golden idea" at him was rather bittersweet. He wrote, "Go for it, as long as you don't expect me to do anything with it."
Even so, due to this very OOC setup, I deducted 0.5 stars from his writing in Invincible Iron Man V5.
Go for it, as long as you don't expect me to do anything with it."(试试吧,只要你别太指望我拿它能弄出什么)。即便如此,我还是因为这个很OOC的设定,给了他所撰写的无敌钢铁侠V5扣减0.5星。
'Fall of the House of X' hits the pages of 'Invincible Iron Man' with a wet thud(?). There's been build up for almost a full year, at this point. Mysterium has been the super, stupendous, and amazing mutant metal that can do all kinds of things. Now, Tony finally gets his hands on some and what does he build? A bunch of ships?!
Wait. They're . Hahahaha. Oh man, the sheer scale of those things.
Other plots get tossed into the, 'we'll F**k with this later' pile... - Riri gets scolded in space by a space dragon then ditches the Mandarin rings - Rhodey proposes a West Coast Thunderbolts (Avengers in name only. HA!) - Tony loses money, gets money, loses money again, and gets some more.... - Feilong goes to plotline purgatory since his creator is leaving the book
As an extension of 'The Fall of the House of X', it gave some added dimension to what was happening with the attack on Orchis. As an Iron Man title, it was pure 'spot monkey'. Bring in Iron Man characters and have them mug for an issue...then wash, rinse, and repeat.
Was it amusing? Yes. Will it go down as a great tale in the Iron Man mythos? Doubtful. ----------- Bonus: Tony has a book signing at Powell's Books? lolz Bonus Bonus: Rhodey sporting the 'fade' when his 90's era War Machine suit helps him out. HA!
With this third Gerry Duggan volume, Invincible Iron Man completes the transformation into a X-book. They really ought to have used the X-book frame on the cover. I'm not complaining though: Iron & Diamonds plays a pretty key role in the Fall of X, and it's all the more exciting for it.
Tony has tasked Ironheart with crafting an armor like none other which Tony intends to use against Feilong and the armor of anti-mutant Sentinels. There are a few issues of build-up, including a nice conclusion to Emma and Tony's faux (?) marriage, then it's on to the big battle. In a series of full-page battle scenes, Tony takes the fight to the Sentinels, kaiju-style. The battle is great fun, but I gotta take back a star for Tony's endless, unnecessary voiceover. This "autobiography" has gone too far.
With the help of Magneto (hello, Resurrection of Magneto!), Feilong and a Nimrod are defeated, but the fight against Orchis continues. Exciting stuff, if you skip all the voiceover boxes.
What I've enjoyed about this book from the get-go is the fact that, even though it's basically a stealth X-Men tie-in title, it's always kept Tony right at the centre of it. Even here, with Orchis at Tony's front door, it never feels like he's just being swept up in something. He's been planning his own counterattack since Feilong attacked him in the first few issues, and this is all of his chickens coming home to roost. So even when Emma Frost and Magneto share a lot of the page count, there's no mistaking this for anything but an Iron Man book.
And if you want big armour fights, you're in luck - there's an issue in this volume that's entirely splash pages of Tony kicking absolute Orchis ass.
Probably not an Iron Man run that will go down in history, but it comes to a solid conclusion that resolves itself nicely, and says everything Duggan set out to say. Good stuff.
It wasn't terrible, but wasn't especially good, either. It seems like Duggan had forgotten about the autobiographical elements of his story in the previous volume, but he really steered into them here: much of the story is told through text bubbles. Also, the constant switching between artists from one issue to the next is a bit much--I understand trying to stick to a schedule, but at least try to find people who have similar styles. This pretty much wraps up Tony's involvement with the war against Orchis and paves the way for some new status quo (West Coast Avengers? West Coast Thunderbolts?).
The finale to Duggan's Iron Man is unfortunately underwhelming. The main problem is that the story is stretched. Over the middle issues we just get page after page (ofter full splash pages) of mechs battling mechs, with a bit of diary along the side. For issue after issue.
And of course Emma and Tony go exactly where we expect, because Marvel continues to have an irrational hatred of long-term couples.
There's some good stuff here, mostly in the first and last issue. And this technically closes out the Iron Man/X-Men plots. But it's not particularly great.
Satisfying end to Duggan's run. And an end to the Krakoa era, too. Emma and Tony felt like a stunt at first, but actually they're very entertaining together. There's less Feilong in this volume, which is a win. I thought he was obnoxious and I was glad to see him (hopefully) sidelined for awhile. The apparent tease for West Coast Avengers is a really interesting concept, so I'm looking forward to that.
Man, it's amazing how blah this gets when it stops being about Tony and Emma Frost and instead is just about the Fall of the House of X dumpster fire. It just quickly becomes uninteresting filler. I really dug the first 2 volumes of this run. Just shows how quickly things can change because this just felt like a waste of time. One with a pat ending to get Tony back to his status quo.
emma frost has the most divorcee energy of someone who has technically never been divorced yet
it's so weird to read about human issues like bankruptcy and being imprisoned and constantly going to court and then worrying about paying the lawyer?? what do you mean you can't just have one of your buddies teleport you out
No one expected Iron Man to be a Krakoan-Era X-Men tie in book, but Gerry pulls it off with charm- the Emma/Tony pairing works and the story is fun, if light. Feilong is someone I never fully understood and wanted more from, and Riri is just kinda... There- but it's solid superheroics

This was a nice read. The art was beautiful and I lingered on pages a bit longer to appreciate it. The ending was a bit rushed. I really liked the relationship between Tony and Emma. I hope to see more of it! The villain was a bit forgettable, but overall it was very good story.
