Detectives Kane and Alton #20

As she opens her eyes and takes in the dark, damp earth, her heart races. She tries to move, but the rope binding her feet cuts tight - she's trapped underground. Heavy footsteps pace above. A tear falls down her cheek as she stifles a scream. He's walking away. He's left her for dead....

This fast-paced read had me hooked from the first page. We are now on book twenty, and it's still as fresh and captivating as the very first book. Each new book gives us a little more backstory of all the main characters. This book is action-packed with some gut-wrenching scenes. This is a thrilling book to read. There are also a few subplots that eventually gel together, and the loose ends are all tied up. Jo Wells and Ty Carter are back helping with the investigation, and we meet a coup;e of new characters too. This book could be read as a standalone, but you'll be missing out on a fantastic series if you don't read all the books.

I would like to thank #NetGalley #Bookouture and the author #DKHood for my ARC of #WhereHiddenSoulsLie in exchange for an honest review.

Never a dull moment in Black Rock Falls! This is book 20 in the series and it is an absolute ripper. I could not put it down, a real page turner from start to finish. This cast of characters feel like family to me now. We have been through so much together, and Where Hidden Souls Lie, went up another level again.

Dave’s past comes back to haunt him, Jenna is in serious danger, girls are going missing, and all of this while Dave and Jenna are starting their family. It is an intense and scary read at time, with characters lives hanging in the balance. We see some familiar faces come back into the stories which was nice too.

I cannot recommend this book and series more. I always look forward to travelling back to Black Rock Falls, and already I am in need of the next book.

Thanks Bookouture and NetGalley for my advanced copy of this book to read. Published on October 11th.

Worryingly, it's quiet in Black Rock Falls, but both Sheriff Jenna Alton and husband Deputy Dave Kane are about to be very busy indeed. With a new member of their small household giving them a different outlook on life, everything seems so much brighter, but this is murder central, and that's all about to change!

With Kane and Wolfe off working together, Jenna gets the chance to work with new forensic anthropologist Norrell Larson in Stanton Forest where she stumbles across mortal danger for both herself and a young woman she finds who is lost, disoriented, and terrified. As more information is revealed, it becomes clear that, once again, a criminal gang is operating on Jenna’s patch, and this time, they might just have the upper hand!

Book twenty and wow, D K Hood has done it once again! The action is full throttle with the jeopardy sky high from the start in this excellent page turner. There are many threads to this story, all of which work brilliantly together, and once again, Jo Wells and Ty Carter are part of the investigation, adding yet another enjoyable angle to this novel. There is also a mention or two of the main protagonists from the author's new work featuring Agents Beth Katz and Dax Styles, which adds continuity to both series.

I was able to read an advanced copy of this book thanks to NetGalley and the publishers, Bookouture, but the opinions expressed are my own. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this and can't wait to see what happens next.

Big thanks to both Bookouture and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review an early copy of Where Hidden Souls Lie, by D.K. Hood. This is #20 in the Detectives Kane and Alton Series and the expected publication is October 11, 2023.

TW: Child abduction

"Taking in Wanda’s thin frame, Jenna knows the poor girl is close to death. She’ll do everything she can to save her, but they’re miles from anywhere and night is falling fast." I read that and was totally hooked! As I continued reading, I didn't want to put the book down and I felt as though I were right there with Jenna, experiencing everything she was. The pace of Where Hidden Souls Lie is incredibly fast and the tension is heart-pounding!

I have become enthusiastic about not only the Detectives Kane and Alton Series but also the new Special Agent Beth Katz Series and recommend them both! I do have one small complaint, though. In both series, the men are always rubbing their chins and it drives me bonkers!🤪

Where Hidden Souls Lie (Detectives Kane and Alton Book 20)

Rating: 5/5

D. K. Hood's Where Hidden Souls Lie is book 20 in the Detectives Kane and Alton series. There is nothing better than a heart-stopping and complete gripping serial killer thriller and D.K. Hood is a master storyteller. Readers who enjoy mysteries and suspense should read Where Hidden Souls Lie. It truly is a fantastic book that held me captive. David Kane and Jenna Alton's characters are well-drawn and believable, and the action scenes are thrilling and vivid. I enjoyed the unique insight into the characters' personal lives throughout the novel. I never get tired of reading about them because they feel like family to me.

Some of the best books I've read this year are from the Detectives Kane and Alton series. An enthralling adventure, this series has a unique plot and clever twists and turns that will remain with you long after you finish it. If you don't have time to catch up with all 20, these books also work well standalone.

Thank you NetGalley and Bookouture for sharing this incredible book with me. D.K. Hood has once again delivered another solid five-star read!

As I have come to expect with this rather dark and fabulous series, Where Hidden Souls Lie kicks off with a chilling prologue, one that made my jaw drop in horror.

What ensues for the first half of the book is a split narrative between Jenna, Dave and the team. Dave’s off doing something top secret, Jenna’s trying to survive lost in the woods and the team are doing their damnedest to find the missing Sherriff. I loved the way Hood changed up the story telling. With each chapter telling me one of the three perspectives from the characters I’ve got to know over the past 19 books each working on a different case.

I have to say I love how Tauri has fitted so well into Jenna and Dave’s lives. It’s like he was made to be part of their family and has always been there even though I know he hasn’t. His innocence and insight is surprising but refreshing from one so young!

This has got to be one of the most chilling and horrifying cases for the crime fighters of Black Rock Falls to have faced. One buried deep in the forest. Hood really has hit the depths of chilling crime with this one. In the dark of this twisted tale, a smile did cross my face as there was a reference to Hood’s new series. If you love the Kane and Alton series, you really need to meet Beth Katz. Where Hidden Souls Lie is the perfect way to celebrate the 20th in this superb series.

When I received the latest Kane and Alton book I just had to read it - didnt disappoint - I was transported again to the mountains. This time there was lots of water action - just felt so cold even reading it.

I love the way the two series are now joining in and cannot wait until we see what happens. There has to be something more in future books re the first half of the book as well, as it just felt like an easter egg.

I was given an advance copy by netgalley and the publishers but the review was entirely my own.

This is book #20 in the Kane and Alton series. Whilst it is part of a series, it can easily be read as a standalone book. We are back in Serial Killer Central, and what a trip this one was! Whilst Sheriff Alton and her team are unearthing an unknown grave, a missing teenage girl is found deep in forest trying to escape the person who has been keeping her captive. Jenna is the one who finds her, but she and the rest of her team soon realise that there may be more young women being held.

I love this series and have really enjoyed following Kane and Alton’s lives through the books. Sheriff Jenna and her deputy (and husband!) Dave Kane are as likeable as ever and they are about to embark on a new stage in their lives. I love the little sideline story for Kane, and you realise that no matter how settled he is in Black Rock Falls his old life is only a call away. The storyline in this book was different as we get to see the team of Kane and Alton split for a while whilst they work on different cases. I loved Jenna’s storyline throughout this part, although my nerves were in tatters waiting to see what would happen.

The book flew along at a great speed with the tension and suspense high throughout. I was completely engrossed in all the different storylines running throughout and found myself turning the pages in double time so I could keep up with the pace! We are treated again to the wilder sides of Black Rock Falls and the forests were certainly places you wouldn’t want to be lost in! The atmosphere of the forest and the fact you didn’t know who was out there sent shivers down my spine as I read.

All the Sheriff’s team were featured in the storyline, and I was especially happy to see FBI Agent Carter back as I love his character! As with the previous books in the series, this was a high action, nerve-wracking read which will have you twisting and turning trying to work it all out! Would definitely recommend.

Where Hidden Souls Lie is book 20 in the Kane and Alton series by D.K. Hood and it is by far my favorite book in the series! The beginning of the book opens with a girl being buried alive and left for dead. She is very much alive and struggling to get out! The man that buried her in a shallow grave has done this many times before. There are other graves near this most recent one and there's a new one that isn't filled yet. A hiker finds a shallow grave and Sheriff Jenna Alton's team is contacted.

As Jenna and her team prepare to go deep into the woods where there's nothing else around, Dave Kane is contacted for a serious job relating to his past. Kane will have to go dark with no phone and contact with his current life. It's a dangerous mission and as Dave and Jenna know these missions mean that Dave may not come home. Dave and Jenna are married, work together, and are trying to adopt their foster son who's been with them for a bit. It's the worst time for Dave to be called away, but he doesn't get a choice in these matters as he is a man with a very particular set of skills.

As Jenna and her team locate the shallow graves, they're unearthing the bones to get identities on the victims. Some have been there quite a long time. A terrible accident occurs while in the woods and Jenna is fighting for her life. Luckily, she has her survival backpack on when it happens. Jenna's team doesn't know she's missing as she went off to look for other graves. How long will it take them to figure out she's gone? Its cold and light is fading. Jenna will have to use the survival skills that Dave has taught her or she won't survive the night.

While in the woods trying to dry her clothes by the fire and eat to keep her energy up, Jenna thinks she hears something. Dave has warned her about bears out here. Jenna is terrified, cold, and worried about how to get home. She's so deep in the woods that her team won't have any idea where to look for her. The team knows she's missing and have sent a helicopter up to search the area but the woods are very thick with trees. They're calling off the search until daylight for their own safety. They have tried to call Dave to let him know Jenna is missing, but he can't be reached.

The noise that Jenna heard is a girl named Wanda. Wanda dug herself out of the shallow grave and ran as far as she could. Jenna gave her some water, a brownie, and let her get warm by the fire. Wanda is terrified that the man who kidnapped her 4 years ago and then tried to bury her alive is after her. She tells Jenna they have to make a run for it. Jenna and Wanda pack up and go as far as they can in the moonlight. They eventually find a place to camp out under a big bush that provides protection. Later, they hear a horse coming and both are terrified. Jenna and Wanda are separated to stay hidden. It's the kidnapper and he wants Wanda back. He convinces Wanda to come out as he says she needs to train the new girl and if she cooperates he promises she'll see her family again.

Jenna is hidden, but close enough to see the back of the man. He has a baseball bat in his hand and he kills Wanda in a brutal fashion. Jenna makes a run for it as she's sure he'll try to kill her, too. The team is out looking but have had no luck at all. Will the team find Jenna before the kidnapper finds her? Will Jenna survive with her injuries suffered in the accident? No one can reach Dave when a body is discovered at the bottom of the river. The body has no face as someone bashed it in, but the hair is Jenna's color and the body size is similar. Could it be Jenna? Dave has to be notified, but no one knows where he is or how to reach him.

Meanwhile, another foster child has been reported as missing. Has the same man struck again? Is this his new girl that needed training? Will Jenna's team be able to find her before it's too late? Will Dave make it back from his mission uninjured and safe? Is the body in the morgue Jenna? Will the kidnapper be caught? Where Hidden Should Lie is the most intense book I've read this year! It has so much going on that it's hard to catch your breath. I was afraid to turn the pages at times as I didn't want to see one of my favorite characters dead. I rate Where Hidden Souls Lie 5 stars and give it my very highest recommendation! D.K. Hood has created a masterpiece with this book and you don't want to miss it! I'd like to thank NetGalley and Bookouture for an advanced copy of Where Hidden Souls Lie in exchange for a fair review. #WhereHiddenSoulsLie

The twentieth outing for Jenna & Dave & another edge of the seat thriller. The pace is fast, the characters are great & I found it hard to put down. There are numerous threads as well as twists & turns. It could be read on its own but I love how relationships have developed & changed throughout the series. Roll on book twenty one

Another great installment in the Kane & Alton series.
Jenna discovers a mystery going on deep in the woods after she falls into the river. Will she be rescued before something happens to her? As she waits to be rescued, she is determined to find out what is going on.
Kane is sent on a secret mission he can’t even tell Jenna about. Can he get back in time to help Jenna and the team solve this brutal mystery that Jenna uncovered?
Will Jenna and Kane’s personal life situation become what they are wishing for?
So much going on within the story…..never a dull minute for sure.
I highly recommend D.K. Hoods series as a must read!

Jenna falls into the river, the team and others are looking for her, except her husband, who is on a secret mission elsewhere. They presume she is dead, but are not giving up hope. Jenna, against all odds, survives the horrific event, but runs into another one. She meets young Wanda, who has escaped from the grave her "husband" had put her in.

It is time for another gruesome and despicable serial killer on the lose read. The book is both entertaining and gritty, as well as hauntingly addictive. I have no clue what is going on in D.K Hood's mind, if it were me writing this story, I would end up having nightmares. Something good happens in the book as well, so it is not all about catching the bad guys, or trying to escape them.

A great read, impossible to put down, and you do not want to miss out! Just read it!

D.K. Hood has another gripping thriller with this very addictive series of Sheriff Jenna Alton and Deputy Dave Kane. Where Hidden Souls Lie has non-stop action and heart-wrenching scenes to keep you turning pages way into the night to finish the story. With Jenna and Kane and their crime-stopping colleagues in action, there is never a dull moment or lull in the excitement!
The introduction of the Tarot Killer into this book leads me to believe there may be an appearance of FBI Special Agent Beth Katz in future episodes! Stay tuned! This series and definitely this book is a must read!

I can always count on Hood to offer up a deliciously depraved mystery for Jenna and Kane to figure out.
It’s am exciting read from start to finish! Jenna goes missing, Kane disappears on a special op with Wolfe, and girls are buried deep in the recesses of the forest.
There’s also a joyful aspect because Jenna and Kane finally have the family they’ve always wanted.
I love how Hood does a crossover with her new series leader Beth Katz. She lurks through a few of the pages and leaves her calling card.
Can’t wait to return to Kane and his Stetson! Sigh!
Thanks to Bookouture and NetGalley for the early read.

Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for my copy of this book.

I’ve been waiting to read this since the last one in the series and not due it not disappoint.

The first half of the hook was incredibly intense. I was on edge and at one point wanted to ‘do a Joey’ and put my kindle in the freezer. I’m so invested in these characters and with Dave on a top secret black ops mission, and Jenna swept away by a river, I was convinced something terrible was going to happen. The way that was all built up was incredible. Edge of your seat l, heart pounding stuff!

The main story was about the killer and abductor of young girls. With a side story about Jenna and Kane’s possible adoption.

I truly loved this. 5⭐️

A great mystery to be solved, familiar characters, a great time to be had by all!! There was one thing I kind of questioned but I will have to go back to the last book and see if I can find an explanation. This book is so worth your time!!

Buried alive! This is how this book opens up, so you know you are in for a ride. This one started off a little differently as Kane and Wolfe are called away for a special ops assignment which is highly classified. This means Kane is out of pocket when Jenna needs him most. When Jenna and her crew go out to the scene of what appears to be a burial site, Jenna has an accident. Jenna is in trouble and her life is in real danger. When she meets a young girl who has escaped from a little shop of horrors, Jenna's protective instinct kicks in. Unfortunately, Jenna witnesses an atrocity and she vows to make this predator pay, if she can find her way back home. There are some scary and tense moments for Jenna.

This book was full throttle from the first chapter until the last chapter, as the race is on to find a twisted and depraved killer who is living off the grid. If anyone can find this killer, this dream team of law enforcement personnel in Black Rock Falls can do it. This group of individuals are the best of the best hidden away in a little town called Black Rock Falls. They are intelligent, highly trained and come from all walks of life. We get a little peek into Kane's real persona in this book to see what he is capable of. This is book 20 in this series, and each book gets a little better. Sometimes series get dull and drab, but D. K. Hood has come up with a fantastic cast of characters that I feel as if I know personally, and I love to read about them. Each story is fresh and suspense-filled as lives are always on the line. When I start reading a Kane and Alton book, I know that I may as well plan nothing else for that day because I will get nothing done until I finish the book. If this is your first book in this series, you will fall in love with this cast of characters and you will be hooked. This subject matter was especially deep and tragic. It will give you the shivers to think that even though this is a fictional book, there are predators out there just like these characters. Whew... now I need nap!

Thank you to Bookouture and NetGalley for this ARC. I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Where Hidden Souls Lie is book 20 in this series, and I am just now reading this author, D.K. Hood. How could I have missed this mystery? I was on vacation in Scotland and ended up reading this novel during the nearly 30 hours of travel that it took to get back home. I was thankful to have such a compelling story to hold my attention.

I read Where Hidden Souls Lie on my phone, but needed to keep charging my phone. I simply could not put this novel down. Hood's novel has all the triggers to keep readers turning the page--risk, pursuit, a brutal murderer, child predator, police at risk. There are far too many motifs to list. The characters are well drawn, and like the plot, they hold the reader's attention.

Thank you to the author and publisher for sending this ARC for me to read and review. This is a 5 star read. Thank you also to NetGalley for a great suggestion.

Slightly different from the other books but still tense and difficult to leave down and just as life for Jenna and Kane is changing, there was a few moments when I thought that one of them was in serious danger. The ending was perfect and hints at possibly part of the storyline for the next book.

D.K. Hood offers up another stunning piece with some twists, sure to impress series fans. In a story that pulls on all the thriller and heart strings, Hood provides true perfect outlet for a handful of well-developed cliffhangers. When a young woman turns up in the forest, telling of being buried alive, Sheriff Jenna Alton tries to protect her. However, someone has been hunting them both and what follows could spell disaster, should Sheriff Alton not reach the rest of her team in short order. Hood weaves a tale like no other and leaves the reader gasping aloud.

Opening her eyes, all she can see is darkness, soil damp on her cheek. She’s been through an ordeal like no other. While she tries to break free from her containment, she can do little. All she hears is his laughter and the sound of him walking away, She is alone and will soon succumb if she cannot get out.

A shallow grave filled with bones is discovered on the outskirts of Black Rock Falls. Sheriff Jenna Alton goes to investigate, only to find that a small body is in the hole. While she scours the area for clues, Sheriff Alton is knocked out during a freak accident. When she is able to recover, she has fallen down into the river and away from anyone she knows. After righting herself and making it to shore, Sheriff Alton comes upon a young woman, who appears dirty and dishevelled. Her story is horrific—kidnapped from her foster home—and she has completely lost track of time. Armed with little other than her wits, Wanda opens up to Jenna and they forge a strong bond before long. Could the kidnapper return to claim Wanda and cause issues for Sheriff Alton, who is away from her team and cannot reach them?

Lost in the forest, violence soon arrives and Wanda is forcefully removed from the area, leaving Jenna to rush for cover. With night falling, she finds herself still out of contact with the others, but also now prey for the kidnapper, as well as any fauna who may be looking for food. Cold and worried, Jenna can only think of Dave and her new family, all of which could be for naught if this is not solved soon.

After a faceless body turns up in the water, deputies wonder if this could be Jenna. While Deputy Dave Kane refuses to believe that it is her. Kane must find Alton or the worst will come down for him and the household he is trying to keep together. No one can push deep enough into his mind to rid him of the thoughts that envelop him, which makes matters worse.

Racing not only to find the kidnapper, but also protect young women who have been taken from their foster homes, Sheriff Alton and Deputy Dave Kane work independently, but in tandem, to pull themselves well outside of their comfort zones to save others. This is sure to be one of the most intense killers they have hunted up to now, but there is no hope of resting, as this killer is always looking for new meat. Hood stuns with the details and story ideas that emerge throughout.

D.K. Hood has done well with this series. While I am now caught up, I cannot wait to see what Hood will do next with the series that never appears to have an end date. Strong narrative moments keep the reader on their toes and provides a stunning level of momentum throughout. I can only hope that Hood keeps her ideas coming and provides stunning cliffhangers for all to see.

Characters have never been lacking, nor has their development. Jenna Alton and Dave Kane have done well to keep the reader on their toes, as they learn more about these two. Their separation and possible familial destruction when Jenna was missing proved incredibly intriguing and added depth to their development. There are also strong moments for secondary characters to envelop, trolling their own stories throughout the piece. These characters are not wallflowers, but have lives and flavours of their own.

There is no end to the wonders that this series has to offer. Plot points keep the reader on their toes and does not let go until the final reveal. While some might think that each book can be read on its own, with plot development that ends by the final page, I would ask why anyone would want to shortchange themselves by skimping. I devoured the series and loved every moment, hoping others would have the same ideas. I can only wit and hope now, trusting their there will be more action before too long. However, patience has never been my strong suit.

Kudos, Madam Hood, for a great piece that leaves me wanting even more.

I would like to thank Netgalley and Bookouture for an advance copy of Where Hidden Souls Lie, the twentieth novel to feature Sheriff Jenna Alton and Deputy Dave Kane, set in the fictional town of Black Rock Falls, Montana.

Jenna is in the forest examining old graves when she bumps into Wanda Beauchamp, who is close to death after being kidnapped, beaten, abused and buried alive. Determined to protect her and get justice Jenna is helpless feet from Wanda when her kidnapper finds and kills her. Now Jenna is on a mission which is exacerbated by reports of another missing girl.

I enjoyed Where Hidden Souls Lie, which is a fast moving read with plenty of developments and incidents. After 20 novels depicting the hunt for serial killers in one town you would think that the series would be getting stale or repetitive, but not at all. The author has a knack for keeping it fresh, while offering the comfort of familiarity with her characters.

The novel opens with a bang, literally and moves full sped ahead from there. Over the next couple of days Jenna and Dave have their own adventures and only team up when the novel is well on its way. After that it is full steam ahead until a shootout concludes the hunt for a killer. This is perhaps one of the more understated conclusions, but the novel doesn’t end there as there are more clever twists to come. The only disappointment I have in the novel, and it’s very minor is that I wished some real identities had been revealed through either DNA or fingerprints. It’s like an unscratched itch to know.

Jenna and Dave are moving ahead with the adoption of their foster child, Tauri, but the uncertainty of upcoming court proceedings lies heavily on Jenna’s mind. He is a new star in the series, not entirely credible as a 4 year old, but still very lovable and wise.

Where Hidden Souls Lie is a good read that I have no hesitation in recommending.
