A Blessed Life: Memoirs of Nancy LeVasseur Chisholm

Rate this book
A Blessed Life by Nancy LeVasseur Chisholm with Kate Leibfried is a work of nonfiction, based on the oral accounts of Nancy and her husband Tom Chisholm, in addition to contributions from their children and friends. The story reflects on a successful middle class upbringing in White Bear Lake, Minnesota, protected from the worst impacts of the Great Depression and World War II, with parents who encouraged her to work, travel, and experience educational opportunities beyond previous generations. The story is also one of a large Catholic family, and of a doctor's wife following a husband in and out of active-duty military service. Together, they struggle and enjoy life from Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, to residency at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., back to private life in Midwest towns Flint, Michigan; Chippewa Falls and Arcadia, Wisconsin; Grand Rapids and Hastings, Minnesota; to army posts Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, Texas; Fort Benning in Columbus, Georgia; Fort Belvoir in northern Virginia; and overseas in Landstuhl, Germany near the large U.S. military bases of Ramstein and Kaiserslautern. The story is an adventure lived with a successful husband and children who love and adore an endlessly kind and resilient wife and mother keeping them together with traditional values, even as they grapple with everything the modern world brings to bear.
