Gah. Broke my heart, then revived it. And I loved almost every minute

Not gonna lie, the first book was hard for me to read because Imogen was so lost and was just looking for a way to end her immortality so she could finally, after hundreds of thousands of years, die. Her life seemed to be an unending sense of pain and fear. It was a little too close to home for me, so it took me a while to open the second book.

But man, from the second book on, it was such a RIDE! Imogen, in spite of herself, starts adopting humans, witches, shifters, and vampires. I’m happy to debate this with anyone who wants, but I’m pretty sure they befriend her because she has zero expectations for them. She just accepts them as they are, whatever they are, and they in turn accept her for who she is. Warts and all.

Which isn’t to say that Imogen is perfect, because she makes all sorts of mistakes. Like letting a young mother with a deadbeat husband keep the vengeance demon that inhabited her body for a while. Whoops. But hey, the evil people the vengeance demon destroys absolutely deserved it.

Each story is a mix of fast action, amazing humor, and some surprisingly deep insights into the human psyche. I don’t think I’ve ever highlighted as many passages in a book series as I have in this one.

All of the characters, even the bad guys, are well rounded and perfectly flawed. And dear lord, Imogen’s relationship with Backman, the bear shifter slash muscle-bound wife of sweet witch Marigold, is the funniest and silliest of all.

And then there’s Rafael, king of the vampires. The man is perfect, and funny, and sexy all at the same time. He will be played by Pedro Martinez in the movie if I had my way. Tall, dark, handsome, sexy, caring, sensitive, accepting, all the -ings.

Just to summarize: If you like urban fantasy with well-defined, complicated characters, a world that stretches out in other stories where you can get glimpses of the characters you love in different situations, and a whole lotta punching, stabbing, wrestling, mixed martial arts action. Plus a few steamy love scenes mixed with a whole lot of laugh-out-loud humor, and a kick-butt female lead who also gets her butt handed to her a few times, I would recommend this series.

This series is such an amazing series! I have reviewed each book separately, so I’ll try to give an overall review. Imogen is an immortal woman who keeps herself alone. But when hunting for her father, she saves a young boy from a blood witch. That boy then decides to stay with her and is her “side kick”. While they are searching for her father, they find out they must try to save the world in a small town full of magical creatures. The shenanigans are hilarious, Imogen is hilarious and one of my favorite characters ever since I have read this series. She is millions of years old, but is so clueless its endearing. Leroy is a great kid, Rafael is swoon worthy, marigold is strong and smart and Backman is such a great counter for Imogen! So many obscure magical creatures in these books. I highly recommend the entire series!

LOVED, LOVED, LOVED this series!

I had no idea when I started this series just how good it was going to be, but the fact that I kept reading through the night should tell you something. I literally couldn’t put it down. The characters were so real to me, I felt like I knew them, I was filled with different emotions as they journeyed through their dire adventures. End of the world stuff you know? There were many storylines that converged throughout the books but were all resolved at the end. It was a book about change, metamorphosis, loyalty, family, but most of all LOVE! It was SO entertaining and enjoyable to get so lost in a world that seemed perfectly plausible with Vampires, Shifters, Ancients, and Humans of course. I highly recommend this series and this Author. Happy reading, and ENJOY!

Crazy Ride 🥰

Wow, I am not even sure how to describe this series. You could say I have mixed feelings about it, but that would be putting it mildly. I usually love when the FMC is fierce, smart and resourceful, but in this case it was accompanied by a lot of crazy behavior. The story is filled with plenty of surprises, many twists and turns, a very hot and likable MMC and great secondary characters. I really enjoyed reading this, but I had an issue with the FMC’s over the top craziness and in some instances with the writing itself, which at times needed a bit more polish. Overall, this is a very entertaining and unpredictable ride that will have you captivated until the very end. Enjoy!

Loved it. Read it years ago and loved it, but decided to reread when I started her Blood and Magic series and saw an overlapping character. What was supposed to be a quick refresher turned into a week-long binge of Hignett (those two series plus Foils and Fury series & Revelations series). I couldn't stop reading. I can't wait to dive into Waif in the Wilds.
Great world building. I love Imogen's imperfections as it balances her age. Within a UF world, it makes her believable. Watching her grow as she finds what she needed, though not what she thought she wanted was beautiful and heartwarming. Highly recommend starting with this series!

Hilarious gut punches galore

This series was absolutely amazing. I literally laughed out loud multiple times, and had to wipe away tears at others. The author did a phenomenal job of connecting the reader to the main character, building true empathy to her plight while finding humor in the everyday absurdities of her life. The main theme of what the true value of life (and death) is carries throughout. I really, really loved it and have already recommended it to all my friends. I'll be reading this again!

Love

You know how you stumble upon a new author through the whims of kindle unlimited and you think to yourself man I hope they have a ton of books I can read now? Lauretta Hignett is one of those authors. Somehow her books strike the perfect balance of strong female lead who doesn’t need a man but there is still romance and a story that is so interesting and compelling you don’t want to put it down but light enough for a perfect escape. Great news too she has a ton of books. I’m going to happily read them all

Good series

It was a really good series for the most part. However, I didn't like the character's regression in the final book. She started a selfish, temperamental, impulsive women, grew through the next few booms, and then became even worse than she was in this first book. She snaps out of it, but I did almost stop reading because she became very unlikable. Still, a pretty good story.

Fun to binge... and reread

Meet Im, the amazingly immature immortal (say that 5 times fast).

This series is fast-paced, furious, often fun, and (eventually) sexy.

This is only one of many intertwined series that Lauretta Hignett has written in this universe, and like the rest it centers a kick ass, hilariously clueless, powerful woman who's navigating life and love with determination and a hefty helping of snark. Perfect to while away a winter weekend.

A-Mazing!!!!!

How this story manages to suprise at every turn is breathtaking. This author has written an unputdownable story of fear, friendship, love and finally acceptance. A heroine that kicks ass, sassy, defiant and totally fearless in the face of overwhelming odds against them, then goes an kicks butt!
Love, love, love the characters and stories this amazing author weaves, keep it up Lauretta!

Great Series!!

Absolutely wonderful series! It has the full complement of emotions all brilliantly crafted into wonderful characters! Imogen is searching for peace while being chased and tormented by humans and a vicious Ancient alike. As her journey changes her she realizes what is most important is the journey not the destination. A must read!

Angels and demons

Imogen is an immortal who just wants to find her dad and end her life, but she keeps getting mixed up in situations trying to help people and gets totally sidetracked. I truly enjoyed the characters and storylines in these books. The characters were fun and snarky and the books made me go through all the emotions. I cannot wait to start the next series.

Spend some time in Emerald Valley

Great read. Interesting characters filled with flaws, powers, and hope.

Imogen is a strong female lead. She cares deeply even when she doesn’t knowing she is caring deeply. Trust me—it will make sense as read through the series.

Well worth the time spent.

Gladly binged this series

Great paranormal romance with a a generous amount of action and mystery . I started reading Hignett’s books out of order , so coming back to read about the other characters still featured in the series I read first is fun. My own lack of faith in humanity made this series just a little disappointing.

Fantastic

I didn't like Imogen at first. Her willingness to leave LeeRoy behind was a real turn off. But I'd read two other series from this author and I knew her morals did stray far from my own. Watching Imogen lose her apathy was awesome. I truly cared about her by the end of the series. Fantastic story about a 250,000 year old creature that finds her humanity.

Wow. What a wild ride. I felt like the last book went too quickly, but that could just be because it's over. I'm very sad about that! Don't miss this fabulous boxed set by a wonderful author. So well written!
