The only thing more dangerous than his sword is the flame-haired enemy who’s stolen his heart…in this gripping Highland romance from USA Today bestselling author Heather McCollum.
Fearsome Highland warrior Rory MacLeod has sacrificed for his clan. But taken as prisoner—in place of his older brother, who’s meant to be laird—is more than any man should bear. So when the chance for escape presents itself, Rory risks everything for freedom. But instead of returning to the welcoming warmth of home, Rory steps into a blazing trap…
Despite her betrothal to their laird, Lady Sara Macdonald has no love for the MacLeod clan. But when her treacherous father locks the entire MacLeod wedding party into the church and sets fire to it, she cannot stand by and watch the slaughter. Saving them means turning traitor to her clan and becoming an enemy to her own blood…left to the mercy of her greatest enemy.
Now her intended husband lies somewhere between life and death, and Sara’s only ally is his younger brother: the fierce MacLeod warrior she’s forbidden to want. And as hunger blazes to life between Rory and Sara—unbidden, untamed, and hotter than the fires of Beltane—they quickly find themselves caught between honor and a love that will turn blood against blood.
I am Heather McCollum, writer of 16th and 17th century Scottish romance full of adventure and intrigue, sprinkled with humor, history, and spice. Brawny Highlanders and feisty heroines are my favorite characters!
I am also a mom of three kids, dog-mom of one rescued geriatric golden retriever, and wife of one 6 foot 4 inch Highlander. When I’m not trying to help my kids make it through the day, baking things I see on The Great British Baking Show, or writing, I’m usually educating women on ovarian cancer (I’m a nine-year survivor).
I love kilted heroes, chai lattes, and eating buttered air-popped popcorn for dinner on Friday nights (my dog loves this one too).

Exciting, steamy, with plenty of twists. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ One thing I love about McCollum’s stories is she does not hold back on anything. Just because her stories are in the 16th and 17th centuries doesn’t mean her characters are prim and proper. Quite the opposite actually.
The Highlander’s Wild Flame is the perfect title because it describes our female lead aptly. Strong, proud, and seemingly fearless, she is the perfect balance and perfect match for Rory, even if she is off-limits.
Rory is a natural leader, kind, and on fire for Sara. McCollum does not hold back with the fire and passion these two feel for each other. Together they must navigate a clan war that is growing harder to stop every day. Amazing descriptions that make you feel like you are on the front line watching!
The secondary characters are impactful with the intrigue, twists, and turns leaving us on edge. You don’t know who to trust and where the story will lead. This story is exciting, steamy, and one you will not forget! Definitely one you will need to read again! ~~~ * I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. I had to take a few days to calm myself down before I could review this, because I was so frustrated and angry with the hero of this story. The book started off in a great way - I was thinking that it would be a minimum of four stars, maybe even five! The heroine was so relatable and strong and empowering, and the hero was both strong and gentle in a way that made me instantly like him. There was angst, but it was tempered with humorous moments, and the sexual chemistry between the leads was through the roof! While I did feel like the FMC seemed a little too quick to become intimate with the MMC, I got it - he's a hottie who is supposed to be your enemy and there's only one bed. What is a girl to do in a situation like that? Get laid, of course.
But then our hero had to be an absolute...see, I can't swear or I'll probably get flagged on one of the various platforms this will be posted too. Suffice to say, he was the worst. He was weak. He was a sub in alpha clothes, and we were, as readers, completely snowed. You see, our hero has a history of a woman from our FMC's clan who lied to him, seduced him, and she was ultimately killed for being a traitor. So naturally, every woman from that entire clan is exactly the same and can't be trusted. BUT we are led to believe that he is starting to trust our FMC and realizing she is different...until his trust is tested and he fails. Grade F. I can't give you a zero so I give you a one.
**SPOILERS AHEAD**
Until almost the very last page of the book, my dude doesn't trust. He doubts everything she says, while at the same time trying to convince himself and her that he does trust her. Eventually, he becomes convinced that she has stolen this symbolic flag, and he decides to send her away for her own safety, with a bag of money and no goodbye. Like some gothic hero, he watches her from a tower as she rides away. Now here is where I get really, really angry.
She goes back to her clan and finds out another spy had actually stolen the flag. She is horrified, and long story short, she steals the flag back. Now the MMC, is in his infinite wisdom, has meanwhile decided he loves her too much to let her go. And keep in mind, he still thinks she is a lying thief, but the heart wants what it wants, I guess? Anyway, so he goes to rescue her, and her father tells him that she did steal the flag but has now stolen it back and run off. The MMC thinks to himself that she's been a traitor to them both, further convinced now that her father has told him that she stole the flag. Eventually the MMC and FMC reunite, and the hero has to do a big grovel scene. And during his lame apology, he's all "I never believed your father. I knew in that moment my faith for you was too strong." NOT BLOODY LIKELY, ROMEO. In fact, I went back and re-read the scene, and he fully believed her father. So in his grovel, he LIED.
And don't get me started on how the MMC's brother threatens her with r*pe, and when the hero finds out, he also learns his brother was poisoned (possibly by the FMC), and instead of beating him to within an inch of his life, the hero sorta just...lets it slide? Barely gets mad at his brother at all, because the dude is on death's door and has been through enough, I guess.
My blood pressure is rising again just writing this. It's no wonder I spiraled into a book slump after this read.

Overall: ⭐️⭐️⭐️ Readability: 📖📖📖 (I took a break from this one before coming back and finishing it) Feels: 🦋🦋🦋 Emotional Depth: 💔💔💔💔 Sexual Tension: ⚡⚡⚡ Romance: 💞💞 (I didn’t think there was a lot of romance in this one – I felt like the hero was kind of dumb and needed his hand held for everything and that bothered me) Sensuality: 💋💋💋 Sex Scene Length: 🍑🍑🍑 (I mean parts felt shorter to me than I was expecting) Steam Scale (Number of Sex Scenes): 🔥🔥🔥 Humor: A touch Perspective: third person from both the hero and heroine More character focused or plot focused? a mix How did the speed of the story feel? medium When mains are first on page together: soon in, chapter 1 (there’s a prologue) Cliffhanger: No, this ends with a happily ever after for the mains Epilogue: Yes but it’s like a prologue for the next story in the series Format: listened to an audiobook from my library Why I chose this book: It was chosen as book of the month in our FB group The Ton and Tartans and my library had it so I thought I’d give it a try Mains: Rory MacLeod and Lady Sara (Seraphina) Macdonald – This is a M/F relationship between a cishet hero and heroine (Descriptions found at end of my review)
Should I read in order? This is the first of McCollum’s Brotherhood of Solway Moss series.
Basic plot: Sara is betrothed to Rory’s brother, but an attack at the wedding leaves Sara Rory’s prisoner instead of new sister in law.
Give this a try if you want: - 1544 – Scotland is ruled by baby Mary, Queen of Scots - Scotland setting - heroine has a large birthmark she’s shamed for - pets – hero has a dog - shes to be marry to his brother - rival families - medium steam – I have 3 full scenes, I could be off because my notes aren’t the best for audio
Ages: - didn’t catch either
First line: Rory MacLeod let the growl sitting at the base of his throat rumble out of him.
My thoughts: I had such ups and downs with this novel!
I was very into the beginning – I went in blind and was really hoping for an arranged marriage to the two of them and loved their first meeting. Then we find out she’s betrothed to his brother. And then I got rather bored and just kept waiting for them to be one on one at least interacting with each other. I struggle when there’s large feelings of distrust between them mains and the hero spends this book second guessing everything the heroine does and it got pretty frustrating for me.
I was getting rather annoyed with the book so I took a break from it and came back a couple days later. There were some things about the middle I enjoyed – especially when they started spending time together and getting to know each other. But by the end, the hero especially was bothering me with his doubts and I don’t know if I would have forgiven him at the end of the book.
So overall this was a bit of a flop for me personally because there were a lot of side characters and drama that took me away from the mains, and then when they were together, I was saddened by their lack of trust that went throughout the whole book.
Few random reading stats for this author # of books read: 2 Average rating from me: 3 Favorite book: maybe The Wicked Viscount

Full break down on what my ratings above mean here: Overall: How I felt about it everything considered! Readability: How ‘readable’ was the book? Did I fly through it? Did I have to tell myself to pick it back up repeatedly? Were any passages confusing? (I will probably score like (1) is literally unreadable due to formatting/typing errors, etc (2) There were lots of errors that made it difficult to read OR It was extremely confusing and I had to reread passages to make sense of it OR I disliked it so much I had to bribe myself to keep reading (3) I didn’t really want to keep reading and would have preferred to abandon the read and start something else OR some minor continuity issues/confusion (4) I liked it fine, maybe a minor error or 2. I was happy to pick it up when I had time. (5) I never wanted to put this down. I thought about it when I wasn’t reading it. I hid in the bathroom from my kids to read. I threw inappropriate food at my children for dinner so I could read instead.) Feels: Totally subjective to each person but did the book give me any tingles? Any butterflies? Did it rip my heart out (in a good way?) Emotional depth: How well do I feel I know the characters at the end? How much did I feel their emotions throughout the story? Sexual tension: Again, subjective, but how strong was the wanting and longing to me between the characters? A book might have strong sexual tension without a single touch. Romance: Was there romance? Did romantic things happen? This can be actions/words/thoughts of the characters and again is subjective. Sensuality: This is how the intimate scenes are written. Kisses and sexual scenes – how sensual were they? Were they on the mechanical side? Was there emotional pull tied in? Were the details explicit or flowery? These are subjective but generally (1) too short to get a good judgment (2) not all what I'm looking for - very vague or flowery prose (3) either not explicit enough or not enough emotional pull (too mechanical/physically descriptive without the emotions) (4) what I love in a scene (5) absolute perfection - perfect balance of emotional longing and explicit descriptions Sex Scene Length: How long the bedroom scenes are (generally (1) is 1-3 sentences (2) is a few paragraphs to a page-ish (3) is about average, a few pages (4) more well developed scenes, quite a few pages with descriptions (5) the majority of the book takes place in the bedroom. This is always hard to tell for me on audio! Steam Scale: Generally, each flame is a scene. If scenes are super close together I sometimes combine them. If a scene is super short or so vague I don’t know what’s happening, I don’t count it. There’s some levels of grey but generally the number of flames is how many sex scenes there are (I max out at 5 so I’ll put a + after if there’s more than that)
Thank you to Heather & Entangled Publishing for the opportunity to review the ARC of The Highlander’s Wild Flame. The review is my honest opinion of the book.
Yet another 5 star book from Heather. I couldn’t put the book down (which is par for the course with her books!!) and finished it in one sitting- no, seriously, I couldn’t take my eyes off the pages as I settled into the world of the MacLeod and MacDonald clans.
Rory and Sara will leave you feeling all sorts of emotions- seeing the process of two phenomenally written characters move from enemies to friends, transformed by what they’ve gone through… This is absolutely going on my re-read pile.
Rory, The Lion of Skye, the scarred warrior with walls around his heart. Seraphina, The Flame of Dunscaith, the brave woman who rises from the ashes to protect those she loves. A brotherhood that shows that chosen loyalty can overcome familial bonds. You’ll fall in love with John & Simon, the dynamic duo that provides some of my absolute favourite quotes and will leave you laughing aloud at their antics. I’m already hoping we hear more about Eleri and Eliza in future books…
“What about the spice?”, you ask. Oh, it’s there. This book is filled with heat and flames, in more than one way!
You will NOT be disappointed by picking up this book- there’s mayhem, treachery, plotting, and intrigue all wrapped up in a historical package, topped off with a little spice and everything nice.
As soon as I started reading Rory and Sara's story, I knew it would be amazing! I must say this is Heather McCollum's best work yet and that's saying a lot since I've loved all of her books. Between the passion, the humour, the danger and with Scotland as the backdrop, it's an awesome read and one that will leave you not wanting to put the book down once you start reading it.
With wars raging between the clans, betrothals are formed to try to bring peace but some of the clan chiefs are not willing to let go of the hatred. With Rory and Sara finding themselves in the middle of it all, not knowing who to trust and yet feeling a mutual attraction, life not only becomes complicated but very dangerous as well. One must not forget the Fairy Flag, the rising Phoenix and the wings to fly....believe me, these all have an important part in the story.
As an aside, I must mention Simon and John....those two with their commentaries were so entertaining and I could just picture them, making me giggle every time!! All in all, a well written story that I can see myself reading over and over again.
I received an ARC of this book via NetGalley and I am voluntarily leaving an honest review.
I love Highlander romances, and Heather McCullum does an excellent job writing them. Rory and Sara were great together and had amazing chemistry! This book had so much going on that I enjoyed. It had villains that you could truly hate, side characters that were quirky, a good amount of steam, and copious secrets to unravel.
The Highlander's Wild Flame was a wonderful start to a new series. I look forward to reading the next installment.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are my own.
Thank you to Entangled for this arc. I have always loved Highlander and Scottish historical romance books so of course I liked this one. This has all the things I love about Highlander books. A string-willed fmc, clan rivalry, danger, travelers spice, and romance. The banter between the main characters was so good, especially in the beginning when they didn't like each other. It reminded me a bit of Maya Banks historical romance with the clan history and non-trusting mmc that has had his heart preaviously broken. I loved how fast-paced and well-written this was and recommend for lovers of fast-paced highland romance.
Heather McCollum's "The Highlander's Wild Flame" promises a gripping tale of rivalry, romance, and high-stakes strategy set against the backdrop of the Scottish Highlands. However, the execution leaves much to be desired, making it a challenging read for those seeking a deep connection with the plot and characters.
The story of 'The Highlander's Wild Flame' is built around a daring strategy to establish peace between two rival clans, a premise that initially holds great promise. However, as the narrative unfolds, the potential of this intricate blend of political intrigue and passionate romance fails to materialize, leaving the plot feeling scattered and in need of more depth to fully engage the reader.
Regrettably, the characters, who are the heart of any compelling romance, do not live up to their potential. Despite their intriguing backgrounds and the promise of intense chemistry, the protagonists appear flat and one-dimensional. Their motivations often lack clarity, and their emotional journeys feel hurried and underdeveloped. This lack of character depth makes it challenging to invest in their fates or the overall outcome of their quest for peace.
Furthermore, the interactions between the characters lack the spark and authenticity that readers might expect from a seasoned romance author like McCollum. The dialogue often feels forced, and the romantic tension, which should be a highlight, is unbalanced, failing to evoke the desired emotional response.
While McCollum's descriptive prowess in painting the rugged beauty of the Highlands is commendable, the setting alone cannot carry the weight of the story. There needs to be more than the historical elements, though well-researched, to compensate for the lack of engaging character development and plot coherence.
In summary, "The Highlander's Wild Flame" struggles to deliver on its intriguing premise. The unfocused plot and lacklus
I have a lot of mixed feelings about this one. Generally, I love McCollum's Highland romances, and there are aspects of this one that I like. The setting is beautiful and vivid, the writing is engaging, and the chemistry between Sara and Rory is off the charts with tons of sexual tension and delicious tropes. Their story is an enemies-to-lovers romance, and I know being from rival and feuding clans with a dark history would create distrust, but Rory takes it to a whole other level at a point when it felt unreasonable to feel that way. For me, his lack of trust in Sara takes away from their love story. It's too bad, because they both have compelling backstories, and I really wanted to root for them. By the end, however, I kind of questioned why Sara would take Rory back. He did her so wrong, and he should have groveled a heck of a lot more before he earned her forgiveness.
I did like the vivid Highland setting, and the plot and history between the clans is intriguing. I also liked the secondary characters, though I wish some of them were fleshed out a little more. And I would recommend checking out the content warnings, as the story includes death, abuse, threats of sexual assault, and more.
Special thanks to NetGalley and Entangled Publishing for providing me with a copy of the book. All thoughts are my own.
5 Stars! I’m in love with this new series ‘The Brotherhood of Solway Moss’! I finished this book in less than 2 days, I seriously couldn’t put it down! This is book one in the series and it is truly a fantastic read! Heather McCollum is one of my absolute favorite authors and she doesn’t disappoint with this one, she never does! I love how I learn true history while reading a fictional romance. I had never even heard of Solway Moss before reading this book but I truly love learning about Scottish history in an entertaining, historical romance. The main characters are Sara and Rory. I loved them both throughout this book and was rooting for their HEA ending, which I loved, even if I think I would’ve kept my forgiveness to myself for a little while longer than the main character did. I laughed, I cried, I got goosebumps, I was surprised & I didn’t want the book to end. That’s probably the only negative I can think of about this book, that it ended. Some hot ‘sexy times’, past secrets, shocking actions, war, peace, a stolen fairy flag, mistrust, evil doers, fighting with fellow countrymen, an HEA ending, and so much more. 100% recommend this book and I can’t wait to read the rest of this series! *I received this book at no charge & I voluntarily left this review.*
Rory MacLeod knows all about betrayal. Trapped in an English prison he had to unite with three other warriors from rival clans to escape. After he returns home to heal, he catches sight of the enemy’s daughter, who happens to be intended for his brother. Sara Macdonald isn’t anyone Rory should want, but he’s drawn to her like a moth to flame. Then on her wedding day Sara’s father sets the church on fire, trapping the MacLeods inside. Only Sara’s quick actions save them, but leave her unable to return home and untrusted by the clan she’s at the mercy of. Now Rory will have to decide what to do as threats abound and he begins to fall for a woman he doesn’t know if he can trust.
Heather McCollum kicks off her Brotherhood of Solway Moss series with a forbidden romance that’s easy to fall into. Rory and Sara are both survivors; Sara from an abusive family and Rory from a horrid upbringing and an even worse time imprisoned in England. They know loyalty from one’s family isn’t ever assured but they’re still torn between wanting to protect their clans and the call to do what they know is truly right.
Rory is a strong Highland warrior who leads with skill. He’s got trust issues, that’s for sure, and it makes him unsure whether he can follow his gut and believe in Sara. Sara is independent and fierce in her own way, as equally protective as Rory. When she’s taken prisoner by the MacLeods (even after having helped them escape) she has to stay on her toes to survive. While Rory would protect her, his elder brother is as nasty and brutal as Sara’s treacherous father. Both Sara and Rory have their work cut out for them if they hope to achieve peace between the two clans.
At the heart of The Highlander’s Wild Flame is the romance between Sara and Rory. I liked them together and thought they had good chemistry. Rory makes mistakes due to his aforementioned trust issues, but overall they are a solidly entertaining couple. They are both kind, compassionate, and willing to fight for what’s right. I was rooting for them every step of the way even as I was unsure of how McCollum would make things work out with constant treachery afoot.
The Highlander’s Wild Flame is the start of a series that features four men who were imprisoned together after Soloway Moss. While only one other of the men (Sara’s brother) played a supporting role in this book, I’m very much looking forward to seeing how things come together over the course of the series. All in all I really enjoyed Sara and Rory’s romance. It’s sensual, sweet, and both Sara and Rory work to earn their happily ever after.
FTC Disclosure: I received this book for free from the publisher in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.
It’s been a long while since I have read a full Historical Romance novel that had me rapt with attention! I loved the way McCollum likens the two main characters to a Lion and Phoenix! Their banter had me laughing out loud more than once!
There were unexpected twists bringing the excitement level even with the romance! He’s fierce & protective while she’s brave & bold! Together they are perfection!
Rory has just returned hone after being gone for a year. His older brother is getting married to a rival clan. The wedding does not go as planned. I enjoyed the chemistry between Rory and Sara.
I think I need to first admit that Jamie (not this one) and Claire have ruined me. I can’t help but hold a Scottish themed romance to their standard. Iykyk. While I did find this an overall enjoyable read it was a bit slow and the main character chemistry was a little lacking, the spicy scenes.. ehh. I liked the mfc, she was pretty badass, but the mmc just annoyed me. Now, what I really enjoyed and stood out to me were the supporting characters. So quirky, fun, loyal and I loved the banter between them. This story has a little bit of everything: romance, spice, drama, mystery and action. I enjoyed it as a nice summer read but not sure if I’ll continue the series.
Spice: 🌶️🌶️
Thank you to Britt, Entangled and NetGalley for the opportunity to review this book in exchange for an honest review.
My heart belongs in the Scottish Highlands. Any time I read a story set in Scotland… especially when it’s a historical romance… I feel like it changes me. I think it’s in my blood.. actually it is in my blood, I have mostly Scottish ancestry. These stories call to me and I love nothing more than to answer back.
The Highlander’s Wild Flame by Heather McCollum is a historical romance that will literally take your breath away.
This story follows fearsome Highland warrior Rory, and Lady Sara.
Rory was taken prisoner for over a year, and he risked everything for freedom. But upon his return home… he did not receive the warm welcome he was expecting… he also encounters Lady Sara… who is being forced to marry his brother…
As hunger blazes to life between Rory and Sara—unbidden, untamed, and hotter than the fires of Beltane—they quickly find themselves caught between honor and a love that will turn blood against blood.
Without a doubt, this is one of the most romantic stories I have ever read. This romance literally burns.
This story is incredibly well thought out. There’s mysteries playing out, intense political discussions, ravenous maddening desire, and just a hint of something more. Something whimsical and perhaps touched with magic.
I love the overarching theme of faith. Have faith. Believe in what is real, what feels right, and trust who your heart pulls you to.
There is a scene where Rory says to Sara “May I love ye, lass?” And I melted immediately.
This really is a slow burn. It makes you feel desperate for these characters to get the happy ending they deserve and want. You are truly put through the wringer. Parts of this book are scary, parts are emotional, it’s just everything I could ever want from a beautiful historical romance.
I am so happy this is book one in a new series… and the fact that I went to this author’s website and found that she has multiple finished series already out… I’m talking a lot of Scottish historical romances… she’s written them all… I’m going to read them all… if you need me… my mind will be in the 16th century with a beautiful Scottish highlander… you should stop by sometime :D
A huge thank you to Entangled Publishing (Amara) & Heather McCollum for the copy of this eARC. It was truly a pleasure to read. This book will release on July 23rd.
Seraphina “Sara” MacDonald is betrothed to her enemy. Although it's not what she imagined for herself, she will gladly withstand life with the MacLeod's if it means peace between their opposing clans. Until she realizes that it was all part of a nefarious plan, and her father is trying to vanquish his greatest adversaries once and for all. Sara will have to prove her innocence to keep herself alive.
Rory MacLeod shouldn’t be so captivated by Sara. Especially now that she’s at the center of a dastardly plot. The MacDonalds cannot be trusted, and that means Sara too. Even if she did risk her own life to save him…
Heather McCollum is a new to me author, but an instant favorite. I was captivated by her writing. She’s bringing the heat to historical romance. The tension between the two main characters was palpable. I was sweating my way through every chapter and loved the progression of their relationship.
This book was action packed and pulled me in right away. Particularly when Sara is thrown between a pointless rivalry. There were so many twists and turns that I wasn’t expecting. So many people want Sara dead, and I was at the edge of my seat wondering how she would survive. I really enjoyed watching what a strong woman she was. She’s not afraid to throw punches and I LOVED every minute of it.
The humor was top tier! With so many great side characters I was in stitches. Between the banter, the brothers, and the betrayals, I was hooked! I’m excited to find out more about the Brotherhood. This was such an exciting start the series and the next book sounds like it’s going to be a riot! I cannot wait for the new release.
The Highlander's Wild Flame The Brotherhood of Solway Moss Heather McCollum ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Rory, The Lion of Sky, has been hurt bad enough by a woman that he will not let his guard down again. He swore an oath to his father and brother many years ago and he has honored it so far. But now that oath will be tested.
Saraphina, The Flame of Dunscaith, is supposed to marry the chief of Clan MacLeod and bring peace to both clans, but not all is as it seems and she goes from marriage to rescuer in the span of minutes.
Heather McCulloum does it again. This author never disappoints. I have to say this has been one of the best books that I have ever read. I ran through the gambit of emotions reading this book. I laughed, I yelled, and I cheered. That's how wonderful this book was. This book had some amazing sex scenes that literally gave me those tiny little goosebumps that I love so much. The characters were top notch and I adored John and Simon so very much. Those two old men helped make this book what it is. They had me in tears with their antics. This book has all the feels and everything you could ever want in a book. There's deceit, confusion, turmoil, and a wonderful HEA that will have you shivering from happiness. A book doesn't get better than this. Ms. McCullom your books just keep getting better and better.
Fearsome Highland warrior Rory MacLeod has sacrificed for his clan. When he along with three other Lairds’ second sons are taken prisoner & held in Carlisle Castle they forge a bond & The Brotherhood of Solway Moss is formed So when the chance for escape presents itself, they risk everything for freedom. Despite her betrothal to their laird, Lady Sara Macdonald has no love for the MacLeod clan. But immediately after her marriage to Jamie, her treacherous father locks the entire MacLeod wedding party into the church and sets fire to it, she cannot stand by and watch the slaughter. Saving them means turning traitor to her clan and becoming an enemy to her own blood. Now her intended husband lies somewhere between life and death, and Sara’s only ally is his younger brother Rory. The start of a new series & what a starter! Wonderful characters whether you love them or hate them they have depth, a story which starts as a walk & ends at a run. The author doesn’t hold any punches & draws a vivid picture of sixteen century Scotland. I loved both Rory & Sara who were perfect for each other but their clans are enemies & there’s a traitor in the Macleod stronghold who’s out to murder the Laird & suspicion falls on Sara. I loved their journey to a HEA with all of its twists & turns. Just when things are going well for the couple another spanner is thrown into the works. A very well written engrossing romance, I look forward to the rest of the series I voluntarily read and reviewed a special copy of this book; all thoughts and opinions are my own
Wow wow wow!! I love Heather McCollum’s writing but this is my new favorite. It was a serious page turner that I could not put down. Historical romance set in the Highlands puts us in the perfect setting for this adventure. McCollum creates characters that are so complex and addictive. You want to be part of the story and with her writing you feel like you're there. To make it all even more amazing the story is her own twist on Romeo and Juliet. Families against each other, false promises, and love and passion that tears everyone apart. Is that love meant to be? Is the passion and love strong enough to overcome it all? You will love this adventure. In this story Rory Macleod was taken prisoner, escaped and has returned home just to be led into a trap again. Lady Sara Macdonald is betrothed to the MacLeod laird. After her terrible father turns on the MacLeods during the wedding and leaves them to die Lady Sara comes to their rescue. Now she must rely on her enemy to save and protect her. When her betrothed's life is hanging on by a thread her connection to Rory becomes stronger. He soon realizes he is drawn to her, but can he trust her? This story is full of twists, action and the perfect amount of passion creating a story you won’t forget. I didn’t want it to end. I received this as an ebook ARC but I will have to add it to my home collection. 1000 stars from me!
The Highlander's Flame was my first read by this author. It was a great read - very intriguing, full of mystery and suspense but also romance. I liked how the FMC was portrayed - courageous, kind, and spirited, with a heart of gold. Rory loves all her insecurities and shows her she can be powerful without him by his side. I also loved the side characters, especially the duo John and Simon with their quirky comments and Marog/Morag (I forgot her name) with her crows. I do have one thing that bothered me. She exchanged vows with Rory's brother Jamie, but when her father locked the MacLeods in the church, leading to the church being burned to the ground, Rory demanded that the vows be nulled and tossed the wedding certificate in the fire. Jamie and Sara were never intimate, so I don't think Rory and Sara were cheating, but I still didn't like the fact that the vows were exchanged even though even the priest agreed that the marriage had never happened. So maybe this is just my ick that is not actually an ick??? 4.5 stars.

This is quite the wild ride. From the very start, you just know that things will be sticky. Secrets. Lies. Betrayal. Hate. Family who would sooner abandon than save. And in the middle of it all? Sara. She’s strong and smart and stubborn and just wishing she could belong. Is Rory the man who could be her home, or is he just one more person to use and discard her?
Rory has his own old hurts to get past. And he’s having a truly hard time doing that when Sara is everything he wants. But family loyalty is everything, isn’t it? Don’t get me wrong. For many, it is. But Rory has a few things to work out before he can see clearly. And he’s got a heart that beats for the one woman he’s certain he shouldn’t want at all.
These two have quite the struggle to happiness, but Sara is strong. Rory is unafraid to bare his soul when needed. And they have a love that truly deserves all the goodness it can find. Not only that, there are a few other men who need some goodness to shine their way, so I look forward to the next man falling for a woman he thinks is all wrong for him!
This book reminded me why I used to like reading highlander romance books - it’s been a while since a read one of these and my obsession has returned 🥹.
Scotland history has always fascinated me- this is the first place in my bucket list 🏔️. I mean Scotland’s national animal is the unicorn, isn’t that cool? 👀.
I’m babbling, let’s focus more 😂. The Highlander’s Wild Flame is such a wonderful book and I’m smitten 🤩. Rory and Sara love story had so many challenges and so many twists that I’m OBSESSED with it.
Rory made me feel a little frustrated but I could understand his frustration and trust issues- I mean, a man who went through hell of course wouldn’t trust easily, so I forgive him 🫶🏽.
Sara was a sweet 💕. Love when authors write strong females and Sara was indeed a strong one. She didn’t stay quiet waiting for her destiny, she fought for it and I applaud her .
This book is a wild ride and you must be patient, especially with my boy Rory. Just love him and understand him, okay?
Betrayal, magic, lies and secrets. This book has everything and I need the second book ASAP 🤯. That last chapter was 😮💨.
Thanks to NetGalley, Heather McCollum and the publisher for the early copy.
This book actually pulled me in a lot more than I expected it to. I liked Rory's near-instant attempts to protect Sara, even when they were in an impossible situation and before he was sure of her. I liked seeing Rory step into his role as laird and take the first steps towards the peace that he and the other members of the brotherhood are hoping the achieve. I do think Rory needed to grovel a bit more to Sara for some of his behavior but I really liked these two together. My only other complaint here is that the ending of their story, though satisfying, did feel rather abrupt, but I enjoyed it otherwise.

This is the first book I’ve read by Heather McCollum. It was good. Entertaining and a light read. You can tell it’s a series by the lead up which was fine.
The story was twisty and turny with some interesting revelations. The spice was decent.
I like a strong MMC and Rory teetered just a bit for me in that department. Yea, he’d been hurt but I felt Sara had proven herself by the end and he was still questioning everything up until the finale.
Okay I’m glad I read these out of order because if this was my first I wouldn’t have picked up the others, and would have felt bad as the publisher sent them to me.
I was absolutely not a fan of the MMC and any point in this book. He is not for me and it pulled my interest away from the story
That being said as per normal the writing and pacing is consistent. And for a historical romance I can see the draw.
Thank you NetGalley and Entangled. All opinions here are my own.
This book frustrated me, moreover, Rory frustrated me. He oscillated between trusting and liking Sera to thinking every word out of her mouth was a lie to defending her to hating her again. It was just exhausting and made him feel flighty and emotionally immature. And that immaturity could be a good foundation for a romance, with him having to grow and overcome this weakness, but near the end of the book he was still oscillating. I don't find that attractive in a romance protagonist and as such struggled to enjoy this one.
The Highlander's Wild Flame is the first book by Heather McCollum I've read and I enjoyed it.
It starts out in the past and it's an important aspect to the story (and the series I expect) as it sets the stage for the Brotherhood. When Rory MacLeod is taken as a prisoner in place of his older brother, who is meant to be laird, along with highlanders from other clans, a bond is formed amongst them as they work together to gain their freedom.
Fast forward to the main story. Lady Sara Macdonald is betrothed to the new laird of the clan MacLeod and she will do her duty. Anything to get away from her father, and besides, who will want her with the marking on her back. But when her father locks the entire clan MacLeod wedding party in the church and sets the church on fire, she can't stand by and watch them burn. By saving them, she will become an enemy to her own clan - specifically her father. Unfortunately, even though she does what she can, her betrothed is injured in the fire and Sara is blamed by some from the clan even though she is the one that got them all out.
The one standing between Sara and retribution for the injuries to their laird is Rory. While he isn't sure he can truly trust Sara, he is willing to give her the benefit of the doubt but still keep a very close eye on her. He's been burned by clan MacLeod before and he will never trust a woman like he did again. The problem is that they quickly find themselves caught up in each other but can they find a way to trust each other when there are so many people around them with their own agendas?
I enjoyed this one. There were a lot of questions around who truly was behind all the things that were happening to Rory's brother and I thought McCollum did a good job of slowly revealing what was going on and who was behind it all. I like the way she built up the relationship between these two as well. The twist with the sisters was interesting and I look forward to the next book when we hopefully get to see what happens with Sara's older brother.

The story has its highs and lows of excitement for me. The characters are entertaining to the story. The plot gives the story the drama that the readers want. The story moves a little slow. The romance is a slow burn. At some points I did get lost in the story and had to re -read the page.
