Do Great Things For God

Susannah Spurgeon: The Pastor’s Wife Who Didn’t Let Sickness Stop Her

Rate this book
Inspiring children's biography of Susannah Spurgeon, whose poor health did not stop her from serving.
Read the true story of Susannah Spurgeon, the wife of British pastor Charles Spurgeon. Susannah was married to a very gifted and busy preacher, who could not have done all he did without her support. Susie experienced poor health for much of her life but she did not let that stop her from serving. One key way that she served the wider church was by creating the Book Fund, which gave free copies of Charles' books to poor pastors who could not afford to buy them. This beautifully illustrated children's biography of Susannah Spurgeon (1832-1903) features stylish illustrations and extra facts at the back, including a biographical timeline with historical photos. It is part of a series designed to show kids that God uses ordinary people to do extraordinary things.

Another great book in the series Do Great Things for God.
The pages are just beautiful and the graphics eye catching and relatable to kids. The story of Susannah Wesley in a way kids can relate too!

I love using the extra resources you can download on their website to use for church kids as a discussion. Ordinary people can do great things for God.

@thegoodbookcompanyusa has come out with a beautiful series of hard back books about great heroes of the faith-⁣
“𝘿𝙤 𝙂𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙩 𝙏𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙜𝙨 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝙂𝙤𝙙”. I just love them! ⁣

💙 This one features 𝘚𝘶𝘴𝘢𝘯𝘯𝘢𝘩 𝘚𝘱𝘶𝘳𝘨𝘦𝘰𝘯- one of my heroes of the faith and the namesake for the Susannah’s in my family. (My Great Grandma was a Susannah and my Mom Susan and I’m a Susana). 😉⁣

💙 This book is just beautiful. Colorful illustrations, fun activities, and a sweet introduction to a great lady who served her awesome God.

Another wonderful installment in the Do Great Things for God series!
The story of Susannah Spurgeon is told succinctly, yet powerfully. She was a woman who faced personal and physical challenges, and yet she didn’t allow them to deter or discourage her dependence on God. Her life is an example of trust and conviction, marked by her love for her husband and her work alongside him for the Gospel. Our family just loves these books and my 4-year-old is always asking for more!

Thank you to GoodBookCompany for the complimentary copy in exchange for an honest review. Opinions expressed are completely my own.

A lovely telling of the conversion of Susannah under the minstry and preaching of Charles Spurgeon. She later became his wife. The book shows how her life as his wife supported his ministry. She even established a "book fund" to collect funds for the distribution of Spurgeon's books to those who could not afford them.

Her health was poor and a frequent challenge creating hardships for her. She persisted in living out her life as a devoted pastor's wife.

The illustrations are charming and will capture the attention of young readers. This book, as with others in the "Do Great Things for God" series, has free online activities that can be downloaded. I am so glad to see this story included in the series.

I received a complimentary copy to facilitate a review. Opinions are mine, alone and are freely given.

“Susie continued to pray for strength and for good work to do even when she was too sick to leave home. God answered her prayer…” Find out how in Susannah Spurgeon: The Pastor’s Wife Who Didn’t Let Sickness Stop Her by Mary K. Mohler with illustrations by Cecilia Messina.

Susannah Thompson was born in London, and she loved playing the piano and reading books. When she was 21, she heard a man named Charles Spurgeon preach, and they became fast friends. She became a Christian and married him soon after. They had twin boys, and Susie loved her busy life as a pastor’s wife and mom. “But Susie became very sick and had to stay in bed for much of the time.” This was hard on her, but she knew that whether sick or well, she was safely in God’s hand. By God’s grace she found ways to do His work even while ill. She started the Book Fund, which helped poor pastors all over the country. Charles Spurgeon was a very gifted man of God, “but he could not have done what he did without his wonderful wife, who encouraged him like no one else could.”

The Do Great Things for God series from The Good Book Company never disappoints, and this one might be my favorite. It teaches kids that our lives are entirely in God’s hand, and He will give you work to do no matter your circumstances. Susie could have easily just felt sorry for herself, instead “she studied her Bible and prayed daily.” She reminded herself of Psalm 31:15- “My times are in your hand.”

This is a beautifully illustrated and well-written biography geared toward ages 4-8. It is a quick and easy read aloud, but it gives a wonderful overview of her life, and teaches important Biblical truths. There are questions, a timeline, and a map at the end of the book, as well as some free resources to download. I was so excited to share this incredible woman’s life with my daughter, and I am so grateful to The Good Book Company for sending me a copy of this amazing story in exchange for my honest review.

This new installment in the Do Great Things for God series features Susannah Spurgeon, the wife of the famous pastor Charles Spurgeon. This picture book biography highlights her personal story, showing how she came to know the Lord through her future husband's witness, supported him throughout his preaching career, and persevered through health challenges to continue serving God in whatever way she could. The simple text from Mary Mohler explains Susannah's story in a way that children can understand, highlighting key lessons from her life and giving a quick sense of the time and place where the Spurgeons lived. The illustrations from Cecilia Messina also include historically accurate details.

At the end, the book includes a historic photograph of Susannah Spurgeon, and there is also a page of discussion questions, a timeline, and a map. The book also makes adults aware of the free activity sheets that they can download from the publisher's website to use with children. However, even though the timeline and one of the activity pages mentions that Susannah wrote three devotional books, the biography itself doesn't mention her work as a published author, just her letter-writing and charitable endeavors. I wish that the author had directly mentioned Susannah's books in the biography, especially since not everyone will reference the material in the back.

This is a great educational resource for families, churches, and Christian schools. It shares historical information and an inspiring true story, and it gives a relatively thorough sense of this woman's life while still being simple for young readers. This will appeal to kids who are old enough to read the book independently, and parents can also read it aloud to younger children. This is a great book to teach kids about a notable woman in church history, and it will be especially meaningful to families who also deal with health challenges.

I received a free copy from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

This picture book is the newest book in the Do Great Things For God series. These books are great for introducing young children to church history. I absolutely love this book on Susie Spurgeon, Charles Spurgeon's wife. These books focus on women who God has used to further His kingdom. I love this so much because this gives young girls the chance to read about these women who God has used and inspire them as well and see how God can use anyone he chooses to build his church and bring Him glory.

I actually read Susie's biography recently and loved reading this after having read her biography. It is really well done. This picture book shows children Susie's dependence on God in the midst of illness and how she didn't let her illness keep her from finding ways to encourage and help others. She knew her times were in God's hands. She set up an amazing book fund for poor pastor's that was able to give over 200,000 books to pastor's in need! She was married to the famous pastor, Charles Spurgeon, and was a great help and encouragement to him in her role as pastor's wife. The pictures in this book are beautiful and I love the discussion questions at the end. There are even some printable worksheets at the end of the book. Such a wonderful book to add to your children's library!

I’ve shared time and again how beloved the Do Great Things for God series is in our home. Adding the inspirational story of Susannah Spurgeon is a great way to continue the series and encourage young readers.

This children’s biography is easy to read and understand with lovely illustrations. Married to famous pastor, Charles Spurgeon, she served her family, husband and the Lord well, despite living with an illness. Her life of prayer and faithfulness led her to begin a Book Fund which delivered hundreds of books, food and clothing to other ministers who couldn’t afford them. Her servant’s heart and desire to minister to those she could, even from her bedside, is truly admirable.

Like the other books in the series, we enjoyed the timeline of Susannah’s life in the back of the book as well as the map, photograph and other resources that are available, making this a wonderful addition for any child’s library as well as a great school or homeschool resource.

* I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher. All thoughts are my own and I was not required to write a positive review.

The "Do Great Things for God" is one of our family's favourite series, so we were super excited to know another new book was coming out!

Susannah Spurgeon's story was truly inspiring and encouraging, not just to our children but also to myself! As a Christian homeschooling mother with a husband in ministry, I can relate to some of the things Susie would do to support her husband and family. I was particularly struck by Susie's faithfulness in her ordinary work (which in fact were extraordinary for the glory of God!) even when she was limited by sickness. Her continued trust in God and the way she looked out for others in her limited capacity challenged me to reflect with my children how we might serve Jesus in our different seasons.

The questions at the back of the book were super helpful in our discussions, and we always enjoy looking at the photo and map after the story, and really appreciate the additional worksheets that help us dig deeper into her story. We love learning about history/ church history this way!

Note: I received a copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

As humans, we are born to crave heroes, role models to which we can aspire. From the media to magazines to movies, we are assaulted with examples to emulate. But spiritual heroines can prove more difficult to discover. You never know what’s in a person until you tip them over and see what spills out. The Goodbook for Children’s Do Great Things for God series is an invitation to a literary tea party of godly women!

Susannah Spurgeon (1832-1903) embodied Psalm 31:15, “My times are in your hand.”

Each charmingly illustrated mini-biography includes a photograph, memory verse, timeline, map, discussion questions, and interactive worksheet pages for use at home or classroom, and each heroine reminds readers of all ages that God makes a way for those He calls. This collection of small books with big hearts is the perfect way to bring the Hebrews 11 “hall of faith” to your bookshelf.

Who was Susannah Spurgeon? A sacrificial spouse and faithful follower of Christ. She looked for opportunities to serve God in unique ways when she saw needs that needed to be met, and most importantly she trusted in God in the midst of her own personal struggle. Behind the productive prince of preachers, was a wife. What an encouraging picture to put before our children. Grateful for this series. The free resources that come along with it will be so useful to the families who use them.
“Susie was married to a very gifted man of God who preached to millions of people about Jesus. But he could not have done what he did without his wonderful wife, who encouraged him like no one else could.” Amen.

Susannah (aka Susie) married Charles Spurgeon and had twin boys. Though Susie was often sick and had to stay home in bed, Charles travelled for speaking engagements often leaving the two apart for many a time. However, though Susannah was sick, she did not let that deter her. She strongly desired to serve in a useful way and sought out opportunities by which she could serve from home. She did that by beginning a Book Fund that raised money to send books written by her husband to pastors all over England that could not otherwise afford them.

The illustrations in this book are lovely and the grit and perseverance demonstrated in Susie's life is admirable.

We love this series! This is the most recent one we added to our collection and it is just as good as the others. Love how it is Susannah's faithfulness to the Lord that makes her testimony great. She lived a simple life as a wife and mother and spent the second half of her life essentially bedridden. But she was faithful in her every day - not letting her sickness keep her from following the Lord! I always love the additional information at the end to enhance the biography for older kids who want to go deeper!

A picture book biography of Susannah Spurgeon, wife of preacher/evangelist Charles Spurgeon, who didn't let sickness stop her from serving God in ways she could.

I like how this shows that even chronic illness can't stop God from using someone to help others, and that you really don't have to even leave your bed to serve God. I really hadn't read much about Susannah Spurgeon before so it was interesting to learn more about her.

Mary K. Mohler does a great job of telling this story in a way that kid’s will understand it. She talks about meeting Spurgeon, marrying him, having twins and life after Charles died. The story celebrates Susannah’s accomplishments, in spite of their illnesses.

This title is part of the Do Great Things for God series, which is a series geared towards children aged 4-7. My oldest (4) enjoys these books, and I think his enjoyment and interest will only grow with age.

I love that this series introduces heroes of the faith in a way that is easy to understand, engaging, and inspirational to students.

Susannah’s story will help children see that God uses ordinary people to do extraordinary things and that Believers can persevere through hard things (chronic illness in this story) by the power of the Holy Spirit and still accomplish much for God’s glory.

I’ll always highly recommend this series! Another fantastic resource.
