Michaela Haze is a dog lover, mum of two, and a writer of paranormal, urban fantasy romance. In her spare time, she eats copious amounts of Japanese food.
So, let me start off by saying that I really do like Michaela Haze. I think she is very creative her worlds are interesting and tend to expand in a unique way upon the already used tropes. She would be considered a dark romance author, as there are triggers in her books and most of her books deal with demons and Hell and lots of torture and all the good stuff that go with it, lol.
SPOILERS:
Peck has been in prison since she was 18 years old. She is accused of killing someone and is considered highly dangerous even though she is mute. One day she is given a transfer order to leave the horrible prison that she has been confined to to go and become a “slave“ in the red city. Now, although this is a standalone novel reading the other books by this author might help give you a better idea of how her worlds work and her levels of hell work. The red city is basically an underworld and hell is ruled by different princesses who controlled the different levels. but in red city, humans and all sorts of demons can live somewhat free of the rulers “princes“ of the levels of the higher echelon of hell.
Peck decide it’s kind of a no-brainer, since she has been tortured since she was 18 in prison and decides to take her chances in the red city. She is immediately sold at an auction, but due to the fact that she is “late“ all of the high bitters have left and she is basically stuck being bid on by the lowest of low demon pack around. This pack is looked down on by all the other demons, even though they are highborn and pure blooded because of some incidences in their past, which are never explained, and that is a big problem with the book. It never really explains the reason that all the other demons kind of hate them..
Then we come to the actual harem . Solas bids on Peck and brings her home to his pack. None of them are all that impressed although they agree that they need a house made to keep their home pretty much put together and it is also a law (again. This is not explained why there is a law that says you have to have a human pet as a maid to stay in the red city). However they keep her. Solas may have bid on her but none of the demons take any real interest in her. Yes this is a dark romance the point you’re being the word romance is in the title. No matter how dark the matter there should be some romance. These demons basically treat her as a maid the entire book there are maybe three steamy scenes and at the end yes you get your pseudo happily ever after but you never really understand how you got to that happily ever after because there was no connection between the characters in fact one of the demons Caim is so unimpressed by Peck that (mind you the book is midway through and some sort of “romance should’ve formed” especially since he slept with her, that when of his “brothers” is captured he’s all to willing, eager even to trade Peck for Solas. When the other demons question him he shrugs and he says it really isn’t a big deal because she means nothing to him and solas is the important one.
The rest of the Demons aren’t much better. They are pretty ambivalent towards her throughout the entire book and when they learn of her “secret“ which is pretty amazing they don’t really say anything about it. They don’t really do anything about it and it’s not even used until the very end of the book . Yes it is used and makes a big bang but then boom the book is over. She does something incredible and the whole city bows at her feet and voilà. The book is over and she is with the guys and they are all married and she is their wife…the end
I was disappointed because the book could’ve been something really really cool. I love the idea of the different levels of hell. I love the different demons and the fact that humans can interact with them, and I even began to like her. I thought that her power was pretty amazing and the fact that she had kept a secret all her life was incredibly strong and resilient of her. But despite all of this, the book didn’t explain any past events. It didn’t really explain present events. It didn’t explain what was going to happen in the future. It just ended on a very anticlimactic note. And the worst part about it because the characters had absolutely no chemistry whatsoever. The book was just boring.. With as much talent as Haze has she could’ve really made this book into something special, instead she gave us a mish-mashed guide of demonology and characters with all the character of sawdust.
I liked this one. The names were a little confusing at first when Stolas and Malphas were mentioned. I was trying to remember where I'd heard the names before and if they were named after disney birds or something. Think Malphas was Maleficent and Stolas and the whole owl thing reminded me of not Hazbin hotel, the other one. Doesn't matter, I'll randomly remember it later.
Anyways, I liked the flock. They were sweet. Caim was playing with fire with the jealousy thing and Murmur had a drug problem, along with the sugar going round. Stolas felt like the leader that should know it all but didn't. Malphas was my fave with his care and that they had the same foods in common.
Could've all turned out differently if they'd gotten the names right. The ending was obvious. The couple of sex scenes felt like they'd been put there out of necessity, although the final bit did make me laugh. A little mystery, but mostly keeping Maddie out of it. Glad to see she wasn't a damsel and it was one of the guys needing a rescue. Nice little cameo making me want to read Mara's story again. Sweet with an OP FMC finally letting loose. Wouldn't mind more of this group.

Maybe instead of writing short unfulfilling books in between series, Haze should just focus on the series books. The relationships are not fully fleshed out. The beginning was entirely too slow and the last half entirely too fast.
Not horrible, but it just wasn't my thing. This didn't feel like a romance novel at all. It felt like a group of people who were thrown together due to circumstances. A few of them had sex, but it wasn't a romantic thing at all. It was just people getting off to scratch an itch. There was absolutely no romance at all in this book. For me, the plot was all over the place and I didn't really understand what was going on at times. Was the plot the people disappearing or the guys trying to get their connection with hell back? The ending was rushed and I just didn't get the whole "claiming" thing and how it solved everything. If the behemoth was still out there, was anything really fixed, or was it temporary? She still doesn't have any powers with the exception of the city becoming hers. How will she hold her own against the magical beings of hell? Anyway, the book gets a 3 because I don't want to be mean. It was ok, but not really a book or story line I enjoyed.
Can’t help but love every story that’s based in the red city. Not only is Michaela Haze awesome for delivering the best stories but when it’s in the world of the red city it’s just on another level. Cry for help was another added bonus to this outstanding series of well written and entertaining gems. Deserves a standing ovation for sure.
If you’re not familiar with the red city, it doesn’t matter which story you start with. They are all about the same thing other than the character maybe a human or other 😜 sins, demons, gods, angels and more. Absolutely incredible and each book just can’t be topped. I say they all about the same thing, that isn’t true but each story is based in the same world so once you start your familiar with what red city is about.
A much shorter book than usual. A bit rushed. The book would've greatly benefited if we saw more one-on-one time of the main character with her love interests, because the romance here is not great in some places (like ). The characters are not memorable at all. That could've just been solved with a couple of days of just "normal life" with them when the main character spends her time with them. There's also some typos here and there, but it's pretty tolerable and doesn't threw me off.
This is a standalone, but set in the same "world" as other books by the author and I freaking loved it! The world is so interesting and unique even with demons and angels. While there are a few brief super steamy times, this is all about the story and I was sucked in from the beginning and so intrigued to find out what would happen next. Needless to say, definitely check out this book and others by Michaela Haze if you haven't yet!!
I sat down with this one and didn’t get up until I finished it. What a fun read. I usually don’t write reviews. Because I am so bad at communicating my feelings with the written word but every once in a while I read a book so good that I try leave something behind. This book kept me guessing and engaged that Infelt like I was escaping to another world and maybe another body. Happy reading.
It took a minute for me to get into because of the style of the author, but once in, it was hard book not to put down.
I love how the Flock was explained and how each was a strong MMC in their own right. Maddie was an enigma all because she chose to be mute, understanding that her voice was deadly. But she wasn't....her emotions is ehatcaise the chaos..and that is for everyone one just Maddie.
