The world has given me everything… but now I have to fight on the ice for the love of my life.
TobiasI’m the most beloved guy on campus.Except for one snarky sports podcast host named Owen who’s had it in for me since day one.Why do I want him to like me so much? And why do I get so lost in his ice-blue eyes? He’s a guy.It doesn’t make sense.
OwenEveryone loves Tobias Harvey.I don't even think he's that great of a hockey player.I uncover some secrets about his prestigious family that could knock him down a peg and launch my sports journalism career at the same time. But what’s this warmth in my chest every time I see him? Please tell me I’m not falling for a straight jock…
DNF. Found it too hard to get into. Normally I'd power through as I hate to leave a book unfinished but with a massive TBR already, I find myself jumping into something new instead. I might circle back around at a later date.
From the beginning of the book it was difficult for me to connect with Tobias, there was something childish and superficial about him. The insecure relationship with those who are supposed to be his best friends didn't help my feeling. The relationship between Tobias and Owen was also strange and I didn't feel a real connection between them. Moreover, The plot of the story was revealed in a slow and tedious way and at the end large parts were left unanswered.

First Man on Ice was a funny introduction to the Twin City U series. While Owen Fraser is the snarky, dry humoured podcast host, Tobias Harvey (aka Toby, Tobes, Toto, Toots, and Toblerone) is the ultimate golden retriever with some big hockey stick energy. The only thing he loves more than himself is Owen, and maybe Hockey - but please don't make him choose. We also got to meet all of Toby's friends - Freddy, Isaac, Quinn, Shep, and Clayton - and his cousin - Maddox - who I can only assume will be the focus of other books in this series.
There was some real laugh out loud moments in this story, and I swear I highlighted far too many of Toby's inner monologues from page one. Cecelia Storm really created a character that was attractive and rich, but also kind, caring, and extremely generous. Sometimes he may come across as over the top, but I honestly didn't mind it, because I could totally see it as part of Toby's rainbow personality. In short, I loved him from the start, he's precious, and he ultimately needs to be protected from anyone and anything.
Owen was an acquired taste. That's not to say I didn't like him - he was sassy and took no shit from anyone, particularly when standing up for his beloved podcast, and later on, for Toby. However, there were moments when I thought Owen was a little harsh against Toby. I get that he saw him as a rich boy that didn't understand, and Owen had his own set of problems, but Toby did genuinely want to help and make sure he was happy. Admittedly, yes, Toby had to learn he couldn't just throw money at things to make everything okay, but I think Owen could've dealt with his problems a little better when it came to Toby.
But that being said, I really enjoyed their dynamic, especially their little bedroom games. I'd have actually liked to have seen more of this, because watching Toby preen from Owen's praise and ask if he was good, boy oh boy, I could've read many more pages of this. There is spice in the book, but it's quite light in comparison to other hockey romances available out there. I would've happily devoured a lot more between the two, but I understand there was a lot to get through in terms of plot.
While there is the main story between Toby and Owen, there's also an underlying issue from the past, revolving around the arson at Camp Harvey a few years prior. It was interesting to get some insight, particularly after Maddox's big revelation at the end of the book, and I hope we find out more in the next book. I'm actually praying the next book is Maddox's, and dear God if he doesn't harbor some secret feelings for Shep - who CLEARLY feels something for Maddox - then I will go absolutely feral.
Cecelia Storm took me on journey of laughter, curiosity, romance, sadness, and spicy sweetness. There was so much going on but I never fe!t lost. It was such a great story. I loved Toby he was so much more than a himbo.he was such a lovable person despite all his flaws, maybe because of them. And Owen, wow..through Toby's eyes you really see who Owen is and why Toby could love him. " he's a veritable sports geek— that's his whole deal but to witness him here like this, in what should be a private moment of celebration....it makes my heart flip." Owen said things on his pod cast about toby, which were not very nice and Toby didn't like that at all. But instead of being mad at him he wants Owen to like him. He's so determined that, that starts them on a journey of lists. There are some really great side characters here. One which is so miner but no less great, which is Toby's Coach. Omg that guy was so funny!! I really hope Shep and Maddox get their own story and maybe just maybe we will get some answers to why Maddox alienated himself from the group. There's a bigger question here like why?? Just wny?? I don't want to give anything away so I can't elaborate but come on!! I really loved this and I got little sleep. It was worth every word though. At one point I had to take a break from reading right before the debate because I was so anxious about the outcome even though I was pretty sure I knew what was going to happen. I was still worked up, A sign of a great writer. I received an ARC from GRR and this is my honest opinion.
Fun read! Toby is a college hockey player that is constantly tormented by a student podcaster, Owen. He's also burdened by his great-uncle Thaddeus' looming presence around campus as an uber-wealthy board member. Him and Toby's grandfather had a falling out that created a huge family rivalry that continues with his cousin Maddox. Owen's podcast reveals that Toby may be connected to arson at Thaddeus' ritzy sports camp, and that forces Toby to finally confront Owen in person.
Turns out, Toby is a people-pleaser and absolutely hates the idea that Owen doesn't like him. He desperately wants to change his mind and prove he's a nice guy so Owen gives him a list of tasks to complete to make him like Toby. Owen is mostly joking, but Toby likes a challenge. The list ends up making Toby more and more desperate to please Owen and he realizes he may have more than platonic feelings for the guy, despite thinking he was straight before this. The two fall into a mostly secret romance, but they're mostly keeping their own secrets. As each truth is revealed, the plot just gets crazier and crazier!
When these two hook up, it's pretty steamy. Toby is absolutely insatiable for Owen, but Owen he dealing with some trauma that makes it hard for him to take what they have seriously. Their scenes are hot and graphic, but no kink.
There are some laughs as you read, thanks to Toby being an adorable himbo. No tears, but plenty of tense moments between these two! Especially when Thaddeus gets involved. What a jerk.
I enjoyed this one! I'm curious where the series will lead as there are still some unanswered questions, but it's not a cliffhanger for our MCs. But, boy, do they work hard for that HEA!
CW: anxiety, panic attacks on the page, PTSD, steroid use and near OD (not the MCs), discussion of body dysmorphia
I really loved this book it made me laugh a lot, not in a bad way of course. I really loved the way Owen was giving sassy , feisty answers to all of Tobby's questions , their dialogs were super entertaining and extraordinary with Tobby trying to understand what Owen was saying or implying or hitting him in the face with. I liked the way their relationship came to , the starting point , all the growth in the between until the end ....love. the growth of their characters, their building up...
In the book we also see how Tobby , trying to make Owen like him , interacts with his friends and how genuinely trying to understand them and they him (so much love between these friends-----i'm trying my best not to spoil anything ). He is the constant optimism in everything and trying every way he can to make ppl around him happy no matter what to the point that sometimes he is overbearing. He loves to much and with all his heart he is sincere, kind , unembaraced , straight forward and most of all fair as much as he can
Owen on the other hand struggles to understand that beautiful man, how does his mind work , how he can think the way he does , how can he act the way he acts. He is closed snarky notbtrusting others but qhen he soes.....omg hod miracles CAN and WILL happen. He is at sometime extremely harsh to Tobby laughing at him and saying bad things about him so much i want to punch him...but theough his geowth he understands and blossoms to an Owen I'm pride if.They are both so sweet but Tobby is the sweetest. Read the book please it's so worth it.
I truly believe this will be my most precious and loved MM book story for a long long time and I recommend you to read it more than once.

First Man on Ice by Cecelia Storm is the first book in the Twin City U series. Tobias Harvey has it all and then some. He is a hockey player who skates by on his good looks, money and charisma. He charms everyone around him except for one snarky, jaded podcaster, who has made it his life’s mission to bring Tobias down a peg. Owen Fraser has worked hard to make his sports podcast popular on campus and beyond. He isn’t afraid to give honest opinions on athletes and has found Tobias Harvey is to be an easy target. It isn’t until Tobias decides that Owen has to like him that the two find themselves spending time together and getting to know each other more intimately. But nothing is simple when two drastically different people get together and Tobias and Owen are faced with family history rearing its ugly head and impacting Owen’s future.
What an oddly funny college sports romance. I went into this with literally no expectations but I enjoy enemies to lovers stories and hockey so why not give it a try. Number one, let's just say that Tobias Harvey is one of the most ridiculous characters I’ve read in a while. He is so freaking oblivious but cheerful and charming. He is so caring even when it comes off as overbearing and just wants to bring the people in his life happiness. He is the perfect balance to the surly and deeply distrustful Owen. Owen’s snark and banter was exactly what Tobias needed instead of constant praise. The two ended up needing each other to balance out their own strengths and weaknesses.
4 stars for Tobias breaking down Owen’s walls and falling head over skates.
Tobias Harvey is one of the big men on campus at Twin Cities U. A hockey player and member of the prestigious Harvey family, Tobias is admired by the entire student body of the university – except, perhaps, by the notorious podcaster, Owen Fraser – the journalism student who seems to be out to get him. But Tobias can’t reason why Owen despises him, given that EVERYONE loves the over-cordial teddy-bear that is Tobias Harvey. Arranging to meet the pod-caster to “hash” out their differences in person, Tobias is taken aback by the cute and spunky ginger. Owen, too, is chagrinned to find that the supposed narcissistic playboy of the university actually has some substance to his personality. A physical relationship ensues, but there are dark issues in each of the young men’s pasts that threaten to uproot their families, and more importantly, their own budding relationship.
I really enjoyed First Man on Ice! The book was very well written and imaginative. The plot was fun and entertaining, while presenting just the right amount of steam and intrigue to keep me engrossed and wondering what was going to happen next. The character development in the novel was phenomenal… I couldn’t help but to fall in love with Tobias and Owen! The secondary characters – especially Tobias’ close athletic friends from school and Owen’s podcast co-producer Kavi – all add a special sense of familial love and support to Owen and Tobias. The almost sinister Thaddeus Harvey is wonderfully cast as the plot’s antagonist.
A wonderful read… proving that there is indeed a fine line between love and hate! 5 stars!!
This is a new to me author and I can't wait to read more by her. At first I was like OMG I don't think I'm going to like this self absorbed entitled rich brat, but boy did that change so fast. Yes Toby is rich and loved by everyone, but he has a heart of gold and would do anything for anyone. He can't understand why the podcaster, Owen, doesn't like him. I did think that Owen was a little harsh against him at first. But it cracked me up to no end when he gave him a list to do for him to do & once Toby finishes, then Owen will like him. And what's funny is that Toby does it. Everyone can see it was a joke on Owen's end, but Toby was all in. On top of Toby trying to get Own to like him, Toby starts to realize, he likes Owen. Like, likes Owen & wants to date him, especially after their first kiss. I loved the fact that he never denies his feelings, he is just confused at how he should to now label himself. I also like that no one, who matters, was homophobic. I loved his coach's comment about not having to have the pregnancy talk now that he was dating a man. Also, none of his team mates or his best friends cared. On top of if all there is a mystery about an old arson at a camp that was owned by one of the Harvey brothers. I so can't wait for the next book in the series. I really hope it's Maddox's book.
I received a copy of this book from Gay Romance Reviews, and this is my honest opinion.
OK, as someone who lives in the suburbs of the Twin Cities in Minnesota... is this supposed to be set here? At one point he mentions looking out the apartment window at the Mississippi River, so I assume so? Why then does this read so BRITISH? Like, I was very confused a couple of times because this reads like it's set in the UK with some of the language choices, and then they talk about the Mississippi River, so IDK. Not a big deal, it just threw me for a bit of a loop and jerked me out of the story a couple of times.
Toby is such a cinnamon roll himbo. He MEANS well, but hoo boy does he do some pretty wrong-headed things. Also, is himbo jock with a heart of cold and snarky-sort-of-mean twink a trope now? It feels like it is, haha. Well that's Toby and Owen in a nutshell. This is a fun and very lighthearted read, though my heart did ache for poor golden retriever Toby several times. He just tries so HARD. I LIKE YOU, TOBY!
This is the first book in the Twin City U series, and can be read as a standalone. I'm looking forward to reading more of this series. I need to know what the heck is going on with Maddox!! Gimme his book nowwwww pleeeeease (though I think the next book is about Clayton?)
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions are unbiased and my own.
I absolutely enjoyed the first book of the series where the side characters got introduced and warmed us up a bit but I absolutely loved the main characters Toby and Owen!
Toby comes across as a Himbo or Golden retriever however there is so much more to this character and that is exactly what Owen started seeing in him…
Owen comes across as a sassy, confident and snarky sports geek and podcaster but deep down he is keeping a dark secret from his past that will eventually cause a great rift between him and Toby…
I loved how they started with a list and a closet and ended with a list- they were just so goofy together yet couldn’t keep their hands to themselves and suited each other down to the ground!
There was a lot of character growth from both and emotional growth. Toby’s transition was effortless and sweet like him!
The dark mystery regarding Toby’s cousin Maddox and a sports camp nearly burning down comes to light but does not get resolved as yet…
I hope Maddox gets his story with a certain psychology student and the mystery regarding the arson gets solved by Owen…
This is my second series I am reading by this amazing author and it will not be the last!
I voluntarily received an ARC from GRR for my honest opinion on this book.
Tobias is a wealthy, popular, hockey player. He has a large group of close childhood friends and is well-liked by almost everyone. Owen is a geeky, cynical, sports reporter, who runs a sports podcast at their college. He regularly makes insulting remarks about Tobias, which are not just limited to hockey.
Tobias just can't understand why Owen doesn't like him when they've never even met, especially when everyone likes him. However, he lets it go until Owen voices a rumor about an event that happened the summer before Tobias started college. Tobias insists upon meeting with Owen to find out where he got the information from, but ends up getting distracted by Owen’s icy blue eyes. Tobias always thought he was straight.
‘First Man on Ice’ is a sweet gay romance between a sunshiny hockey player and a grumpy sports reporter. Owen finds himself falling for Tobias despite his desire to not fall for a sports player and Tobias falls for Owen despite never falling for anyone before. Tobias and Owen are good for each other and both characters grow throughout the course of the book. The spicy scenes are also super hot! I highly recommend this four-star romance.
I received a copy of this book from Gay Romance Reviews, and this is my honest review.
Tobias is a rich, good-looking, beloved hockey player that has a huge amount of golden retriever energy. In the beginning of the book his himbo thoughts were a bit much but it got better (or I got used to it) as the book went on.
Owen is a sports nerd and hosts the campus sports podcast. He’s more introverted, but completely into sniffing out good stories for the podcast.
Book starts when Owen makes some comments about Tobias on his podcast that makes Tobias think that Owen has something personal against him. So he puts out the word that he’s looking to talk to Owen – and they do end up talking. It just doesn’t go the way Tobias hopes it does. After the meeting Tobias is determined to make Owen like him. And somewhere along the way, feelings get involved, and secrets come out.
I liked how Tobias – the apparently straight guy – didn’t really even blink when he realized he’s attracted to Owen. Owen had more reservations about getting involved with Tobias but there were fun events that Tobias won him over with. Both set of friends were great, and I can’t wait to read more about them in the upcoming books.
Really fun, low-angst read, will definitely check out the other guys’ books.
This is a new to me author, I’ve been enjoying fresh new to me authors this 2023 reading season. This is also the start of a brand new series, Twin City U Series.
Toby and Owen are true enemies to lovers. Owen runs a podcast and has a goal of taking Toby down with report after report on his podcast. Owen wants the truth to an old Toby family secret and will use his podcast to bring it to light, meanwhile Toby just wants to play hockey and graduate his senior year.
Their relationship quickly takes off with Owen trying to uncover the truth from Toby’s past, and Toby becoming obsessed with Owen. Toby quickly becomes to rely on him for everything. They rely on one another. This becomes an important part of them, always needing each other.
Lots of internal monologues from the characters which is a huge selling point for me. I enjoy knowing what the characters are thinking and feeling. Internal monologues are a great way to have additional insight to characters.
Overall, I enjoyed this books and will be continuing on the series when released later this year and early next year. I’ve become invested in these characters and want to see their HEA.
*Reader Note: I received a free copy of this book through Gay Romance Reviews (GRR) and this is my honest review.
This is not my first Cecelia Storm book and it will not be my last. It’s a sports based series (my guess is that each one will feature a different sport) with an overarching plot that I’m guessing will span multiple books. This book features Owen - a sports reporter - and Tobias - an ice hockey player, and does overall feature an HEA for these two. Slight warning there is a HFN plot point regarding Tobias’ family discord that doesn’t necessarily detract from the enjoyment of the book and will definitely keep me coming back for more. I struggled a little bit with Tobias’ character as he embodies the “dumb jock with a heart of gold” stereotype which I typically wouldn’t love but with his character there is really more focus on the “heart of gold” portion which really grew on me. Suspend your disbelief about Tobias’ wealth how is he that wealthy yet his family’s sports camp is totally broke? Maybe this is explained in future books. You do not need to be a sports fan or know anything about sports to enjoy this book.
3.5⭐️ I really enjoyed this author’s previous sports romance series centered around football, so I was so happy to see this new series is about hockey. A personal favorite trope of mine. The enemies side of this enemies to lovers journey is mostly one sided, coming from Owen and his ongoing and sometimes quite mean critiques of Toby. While the criticism has taken a toll on Toby, he is so naturally good natured he’s mostly tries to rise above. That’s until Owen start digging up dirt on a mysterious arson involving the team. I’m a fan of this author and I will definitely read the next book in this series. Toby and Owen are good characters, I liked them together. This felt incomplete to me, the blow up a the end felt forced and the epilogue felt like a bit of an abrupt way to close. On the plus side, there are tons of interesting characters in this series opener which bodes well for the series.
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book.
Tobias and Owen don’t exactly hit it off, but after Tobias puts some effort into trying to make Owen like him, and Owen recognizes Tobias’ efforts and his genuine nature, they get it on… a lot. It’s spicy, too! Whew! Tobias comes across as a bit naive, but since he was born into privilege I gave him a bit of slack. His upbeat attitude is refreshing to see.
The relationship these two have takes a hit when Owen gets too wrapped up in his own depression to recognize Tobias’ declaration of love. It’s a rough patch, but after I vigorously yelled at Owen, he got it together giving the story a happy ending. Owen has to put some effort into winning Tobias back. As he should…
The mystery of the tragic fire at one of the camps is unveiled at a good pace. The supporting characters are awesome and lovable. I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys reading about hot spicy boys making out and doing so much more to each other.
I LOVED this story. Tobias and Owen are hilarious together, Owen snarking and making fun of Tobias, and Tobias so naïve, earnest and hopeful! I barely stopped smiling the whole way through. Yes, there is some dark stuff, but mostly the two guys talk to each other. The list is fabulous – loved how that was used. I had a late night reading this because I just wanted more of these two, and I wanted to see them get their HEA, which they do, but there are still some questions that don’t get answered…I cannot wait to find out what the story is with Maddox (I’m hoping that’s book 2). Highly recommend.
I received an Advance Reader Copy of this book for free and this my honest and voluntary opinion.
If you want to laugh out loud in the middle of the day and have people look at you like you're crazy then run and read this book! Tobias is absolutely the most himbo himbo in the history of all himbos. do you know that meme of the blond labrador who looks at you with that absolutely adorable face but clearly lost like Austria? that's him! You will love Tobias. Owen on the other hand you will have to find out for yourself! For those who love spicy books but full of humor and with a fairly fast pace (the love story develops quite quickly). There is also an interesting subplot involving the secondary characters which I imagine will reveal itself in subsequent books. spicy level 3.5/4 out of 5 (enjoy) Read it... it's one of those books that flows very well and will leave you smiling.
I have read many books with this type of theme, nerd (journalist) & jock. I love them! This book does not disappoint, Cecelia wrote another winner IMHO. The way Toby finds out who Owen is foreshadowing how this book goes. I mean Owen, the nerdy college journalist, does shred Toby in his article so what do you expect?! The two begin speaking about the article and a slow friendship begins. From there, so much is happening not only with the MC's but other characters as well. This is one of the things that make books written by Cecelia Storm so good. There is more to the stories than two guys getting together. So, grab this book and get a feel for whom we may see in future books.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
This was a sweet M/M college story, apparently the first one in the “Twin City U” series. I hadn’t had the pleasure of reading a story about a college hockey player so this was a first for me. I really enjoyed the “enemies to lovers” trope in this one. I’d give it 5 stars.
The story focuses on Tobias, one of the most popular jock on the campus who is well liked by almost everyone except for this student. This student happens to be the college sport podcast reporter and he would constantly jab and make fun of Tobias during the reporting. It drove Tobias crazy and he couldn’t understand why Owen didn’t like him. One night, Tobias decided to confront Owen. That was the beginning of something! I’m gonna stop and have you pick up the book to read and find out!!! Happy reading!
MM College Bi-awakening Hockey player and sports podcaster 🏒🎤 Little spice 🌶️ Suspense-ish
Owen’s podcast typically has snarky comments about Tobias. Tobias wants to make Owen like him and asks how he can make him like him. Owen writes a list of ridiculous things thinking Tobias will know it’s a joke but Tobias is a bit dense and completes the tasks. Blah blah blah. The story is pretty boring. 😴
Tobias has a group of friends, all athletes from each of the major sports, who will be featured in future books. They have been friends since junior high. A fire happened at a sports camp and the friend group is blamed. The suspense part of the story revolves around this incident. We never get the full story, so I’m assuming we will find out more in the future books.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Toby is a rich college hockey player. He sets out to make Owen, a podcast host like him after he says some nasty things. Only Toby finds himself more than liking him. Toby is one of the goofiest, sweetest and innocent in nature of guys ever and Owen is more serious and down to Earth. Their lives are overshadowed by family squabbles, corrupt mentors and career foreboding. With friend support and each other, they persist and commit to each other. This is obviously the first in a series at Twin Cities U starring a circle of friends. I received a copy of this book through Gay Romance Reviews and this was my honest opinion.
I do love me some hockey player stories! However, having been a figure skater, one thing people never tell you is that hockey uniforms Stink!! Foul, horrid, gagging smell. Seriously. Then the players put them on and play and when finished walk by you and you pass out!! Now, don't think about that when reading this book! I enjoyed it, lots and lots of angst but finally a HEA for them. I like that the author doesn't make this story singularly about the two main characters but provides a rich, robust environment with fabulous other characters to really bring this story to life. Now, I want more from this author. Sign me up! Hope you enjoy this as much as I did. I'll be back!
I really enjoyed this book. I love when jocks fall in love with the adorkable boy next door-type. Although they were at odds in the beginning, the MC’s had a good dynamic and their opposite personalities attracted, which was interesting to experience. Their interactions were at times very funny and at times very sexy. I liked watching their feelings develop and evolve into something real and lasting. It was satisfying to watch them fall in love, even among all the chaos and problems that had arisen. I love this author’s writing style, and this was another book that was well worth the read.
I received an ARC of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.
This is a cute story of Owen, a sports nerd, falling for Tobias, a hockey player. At the start of the story, Tobias is a super sweet, sunshiny cinnamon roll of a man. He comes from a wealthy family so he has not had to face a lot of obstacles. But Owen is the one thing that is irritating him. Owen runs a podcast that has been very critical of Tobias. I loved that there are layered storylines here. Both men have issues to solve and they are not stereotypical. Even though Owen's is solved, Tobias' is family based and has the promise of unfolding over the rest of the series. This series shows lots of promise and I can't wait for the next book.
Tobias and Owen are very different people, different backgrounds, different skill sets but both sports fans. Brought together by what appears to be a great dislike from one party, true colours emerge, lines get blurred, sexuality gets questioned and truth wins out. It has some harder hitting moments, some passion, the angst is low and there are a few laughs too. I wasn’t that keen on either main character at times, both have faults for sure but the ending won me over more so. I have many questions still, just like Owen does, and I hope the next book uncovers more.
First Man on Ice by Cecelia Storm is the first book in the Twin City U series. Toby is rich and loved by everyone, but he has a heart of gold and would do anything for anyone. Everyone that is but campus podcaster Owen. Owen is a sports nerd and hosts the campus sports podcast. He’s more introverted, but completely into sniffing out good stories for the podcast. If you're in the mood for a banterous MM enemies to lovers, sexual awakening (with minimal angst) with golden retriever/black cat grumpy sunshine energy.... Then this might be the book for you!
