Made for Heaven: A Guided Lent Journal for Prayer and Meditation

Rate this book
Join Fr. Agustino Torres, CFR—founder of Corazón Puro—on a multimedia Lenten journey inspired by St. Francis. Begin the season with a vow of poverty and end at Easter with a heart free from the desert of sin and open to love, serve, and care for others. Made for Heaven features stunning original art by Valerie Delgado of Pax.Valerie, along with daily meditations on a passage from scripture, reflection questions, prayer, and space for journaling and notetaking.

A life of simplicity and poverty orients you toward God’s love and reminds you that you are made for heaven. Torres says the best way to prepare yourself for that final destination is to live as true pilgrims who need to “travel lightly” and detach from earthly pleasures.

In six transformative weeks, you will learn how to allow the Holy Spirit to move in your heart through a new theme each   Made for Heaven is perfect for both individual and group use. Free companion videos and a downloadable leader’s guide are available at avemariapress.com. The book and other resources are also available in Spanish.

I met Fr. Agustino at a Franciscan University of Steubenville Youth Conference. He was one of the speakers and I was the student worker who provided rides to all the speakers. His presence at the conference was impactful, so I was excited to read through this book by him.

While I read through the book outside of Lent, the meditations still provided a powerful reminder of Our Lord’s suffering for us and his desire to draw us closer to him in love.

Each day is structured around a meditation and reflection on content from Scripture, saints, and scholars. You learn while reading, but you are also challenged in your faith. The questions don’t tend toward reflection in the sense of “summarize what was in the meditation.” Rather, the reflection questions ask the reader to reflect on how the meditation impacts them specifically. Are you living your life for Christ? What about this meditation might be a call to love Christ more intimately?

A fantastic read for anyone who wishes to journey through Lent with intentionality, being pushing lovely but consistently further toward Christ and perfect love of him.

This book is the one that I have been reading since Ash Wednesday for my Lenten Reading, along with reading my other Book Devotional Reading every morning. This was a very good recourse, and one that I was happy to find to read.

The book is set up with a series of reflections, followed by questions on the reflection for a given day; one can journal if one wishes one’s own thoughts in the space provided. For several of the weeks, the Sunday section is tied to the Sunday readings for Year A in the Lectionary, and the Sunday reading for Year A is referenced heavily throughout the week. This is not a problem if one is in Year B (as we are this year) or in Year C, but it does mean that the book might be more apropos if one is in Year A (so I may be re-reading this book for Lent in two or five years). The book ends with Easter Sunday, instead of more logically Holy Saturday; I just did not read the Easter Sunday section.

This was a good book to read during Lent, and I am happy to have found it.

Beautifully written.

Fr Agustino Torres writes differently than others. Reading so many seasonal devotionals can make them blur together sometimes. They’re usually well done, but this one feels fresh & stands out.

He’s also a fellow Rio Grande Valley native. Just had brag on that.

Enjoyed the book & I hope he writes so much more.
The accompanying videos are great too.

The digital ARC was made available to me on NetGalley to review, but I bought a one too for the beautiful artwork that’s just as moving as the writing & to have a tangible copy. I will buying the both Advent & Lent books for family these upcoming seasons too.

Highly recommend!
