Whether you lived through the sixties and seventies or just wish you had, this revised and expanded edition of the Hippie Dictionary entertains as much as it educates.
Cultural and political listings such as "Age of Aquarius," "Ceasar Chavez," and "Black Power Movement," plus popular phrases like "acid flashback," "get a grip," and "are you for real?" will remind you of how revolutionary those 20 years were.
Although the hippie era spans two decades beginning with the approval of the birth control pill in 1960 and ending with the death of John Lennon in 1980, it wasn't all about sex, drugs, and rock'n' roll. These were the early years of pro-ecology and anti-capitalist beliefs-beliefs that are just as timely as ever. So kick back and trip out on the new entries as well as the old, and discover why some are dubbing the sixties and seventies "the intellectual renaissance of the 20th century.
I think those that lived through those years probably fried their brain cells on acid and whatever anyway, so the book will serve as an aide memoire when telling stories to their grandchildren. As they say, "Lest we forget"
I have the original 2002 edition, which is 663 pages; I'd like to read this longer edition as well.
This is a terrific encyclopedia (and dictionary) that does a good job of covering the history of the counterculture movement of the 1960s & 1970s. I’m a baby boomer and was an adolescent and young adult living in San Francisco during most of this time period – I smiled a lot in recognition while reading this book.
I liked the form and content of this awesome book. In this bad days for Gaia, I would recommend it to everybody. I chose this rating because I am the true hippie.
If you're searching for info on anyone or anything linked to the 70's you'll find it here! I love just browsing through it from time to time and if I want the origin of a word or term, I'll find it here!
Haha! It is really informative, as well as interesting and funny. If you are interested in learning more about this time period, and the lingo, this is a MUST READ! xD
