I was so looking forward to this story but it fell short. My challenge was primarily the writing style- it was repetitive, almost robotic at times, and centered on telling instead of showing. Because of that, I never felt like I got to know the characters because the same details were just repeated over and over.
I also felt like there were some major plot holes. It’s stated that both Alpha and Beta governments are “up to something” but there are no clues on either end as to what that is. Well, until one government leader reveals their master plan in the final few pages. If there is a large sub-plot, I would hope there are clues and instances in the story that support it; not just the constant repetition that no one can be trusted.
In my opinion, this story had a great concept but lacked depth.
The writing itself is immature. The story is unoriginal. The female beta joining a male pack is the exact same story as Avanne Michaels The Beta. The male omega presenting during military training is straight from Pack Darling by Lola Rock. And both of those books are written far better than this one.
The plot holes are gaping. There are only two cities? In an entire world? Uh why? Logistically that doesn’t even make sense. They are always preparing for war. Why? Why is this society so military focused? They just discovered scent matching. Why is this a brand new discovery? Why is forced placing of a beta a way to keep omegas safe. There is an explanation, but it isn’t fleshed out and also doesn’t make sense. Ok one beta can keep an omega safe from a pack of alphas? Highly doubtful. It would make so much more sense if the omega was assigned a beta as a bodyguard prior to a pack.
So disappointed with this book, and disappointed with the author’s blatant copying of ideas.
This book is just a little too much like a couple other books for comfort.
If you've read The Beta: Part One and Pack Darling: Part One then you don't need to read this as it's basically a mash up of those two but with nonsensical plot holes and a desperate need for editing.
I mean, I'm going to read the next one but IDK if I can really urge anyone else to. Unoriginal omegaverse.
This omega verse story had a different feel to it and was quite good. The author has made an interesting world where there is an Alpha city and a Beta city.
Gryphon is the alpha that I don’t like much yet, but I understand his motives. Good cliffhanger. It will be interesting to see what book 2 brings.
The writing fell short, a lot of repetition over many chapters of clear "facts", without such facts having any real explanation or purpose within the world or the story. I honestly only finished the story because I skipped a lot of the male POV. They held the same repetition; I shouldn't find her hot, but goddamn is she hot. I want her and my mate. I'll do anything to make them happy. Mila harps she does everything for her father, but not once does the author actually have Mila reach out or show her true hesitation once she's in the house. I get it's an omega verse, but being constantly horny for Oliver can go so far. Gryphon was supposed to be this huge asshole, and yeah I guess sometimes he can be kind of a dick, but all it was was a smoldering glare while in his mind he couldn't even sleep with Oliver without picturing Mila. It just felt flat, and this "rejection" wasn't anything wild. Lachlan was said to be a psychopath, but really the only time his "psychopathy" came through was when he tried to carry a bunch of knives in the first chapter he's introduced, and then again when he is turned on by Mila talking about killing a rabbit. More so it's just him giggling and shit. I get he kills the alpha at the hotel, but even if it was an extreme, it wasn't derived for his pleasure or power. It was to protect someone he cared about and if nothing else, who his omega cared for. Not signs of psychopathy or sociopathy. I won't go farther into the relationships, but they all just felt flat and repetitive, and I really couldn't handle reading their interactions. The nicest part of the book was Oliver's heat. Everything else was a blur of repetition and robotics. I couldn't feel who or what the characters were or wanted or who they were outside of sex with each other. They are still people. They just didn't feel like people.

If you’ve read The Beta and Pack Darling, you’ve read this. It’s like a AI rewrote both of the books into one. I mean literal scenes are copied. None of the characters personalities are the same beginning to end. Strong FMC? Uh, when? She’s supposed to be the top of her class but…. Never defends anyone, barely herself. The concept was interesting, but the delivery was seriously lacking. Just another hidden omega as beta book.
It was an easy one to get into, fast and loud. The beta /alpha stuff was BS and I couldn’t stand Lily. The pack came across as immature, especially Gryphon. Apart from Gryphon the pack lost their hatred almost right away. I did like Lachlan, as well as Oliver being over protective and acting like an alpha. Barret didn’t really stand out. The whole dress thing was stupid given the threat and then the ending where they were separated. Miscommunication and outside forces. Cliffhanger ending on a countdown. I am surprised no one noticed Mila was an omega. Curious how it ends.

A pack is forced to take on a beta that they don't want, but will they change their mind in time to become a pack or will the pack splinter forever. A fun omega/alpha/beta romance story that has action as well as spice. The characters are interesting and intriguing, so you quickly get drawn into the story. Be forewarned that this story does end on a cliffhanger so make sure you have book 2 queued up and ready to go!
The writing is stilted and blah. For an omegaverse it's also blah but for some reason I care about the ending so I'm going to begrudgingly read book 2.
Who edited this? If an editor was too expensive who alpha and beta read this book? Who exactly made this author believe this book was ready for public consumption?
Grammatical errors, confusing plot points, time line holes- it’s got it all. It talks in past tense as a current situation is occurring. Example: Oliver is alpha barked and they talk about their bond tether weakening due to it , and as it’s happening it’s said in a past tense “and it hasn’t been the same since he alpha barked me” literally no time has passed for him to have that ruminating thought. It’s literally happening as he’s thinking it.
Then there was never any moment when Oliver had a discussion with fmc about her dad which I would feel would need to be discussed as a pivotal point in why she took the beta trial assignment. Oliver goes on a long inner monologue about how he trusts her and blah blah blah, but they never shared what would’ve been an important convo.
Some words used were incorrect or didn’t really seem to fit: how does anyone “sliver out from” under something? Use of words: “stanch” bleeding… staunch? These were things that even the most juvenile of editors, friends, alpha/beta readers should’ve caught.
I agree with other readers, there were a lot of different parallels to better written books out there that this book was walking the line of plagiarism. Aside from the 80% that wasn’t good, there is still some portion of it that has potential- it just needs to be better written. The tell and show style of writing made this feel written by a brand new baby author or by someone still in high school.
Not what I was expecting, very similar to other books but with less world building, character development and more plot convenience than a convenience store.
🔷 extreme repetition of simple facts, EXTREME
🔷 the heroine whines constantly for no reason about how she’ll always be alone, no one loves her blah blah. She had a great childhood and she’s an omega, so there’s no reason she can’t get a pack after the Trials are done.
🔷 Lachlan is great in book 1, Book 2 he turns into a snot nose (literally), crying crazy person with split personalities that’s no longer attractive
🔷 there’s no brotherly connection here, the guys are always at odds and insulting each other
🔷 the general plot just doesn’t make sense, there’s so many holes. See Notes
🔷 there’s no smut in first book 1/🌶️. Book 2 was better but just didn’t do it for me, no emotion very perfunctory and not very detailed
🔷 we don’t even know what the guys do for work
🔷 the main conflict isn’t betrayal, it’s miscommunication. Here we have a case of serious plot convenience in that after having calls cut off no one drives over to check on the heroine.
Definitely a 2-3 star read, if you have nothing else to read than try it, but I didn’t feel strongly about any of the characters and the world building was extremely weak. I’ve tried a few books by this author and won’t continue.

I was very disappointed in this. There was no build up or little bits of information about the plot or twist. The story just stayed the same the whole way though thus being quite boring. We missed out on the dirt between both leaders and what the actual plan or goal they both wanted. I felt like Gryphon was painted in a bad light and you made the other characters dislike him for no reason. There was no understanding or care for what he was going through and he had no support. Barret, Gryphon and Lachlan where not even cared for by Olivia they where just there because they where alphas and that he doesn't actually love them.
Alpha pack ✅ Omegaverse ✅ Strong FMC ✅ FMC with a secret✅ Grumpy alphahole ✅ Male Omega ✅
I really like the world this Omegaverse is set in. Alphas and beta rule the world and omegas are just property. Our FMC is a beta who has spent 4 years training to guard an omega. She and Ollie form a bond and mates is hinted at. Ollie does have an Omega heat, but the spice 🌶️ is tamer than most other omega books I’ve read. TW there is an attempted SA Book 1 ends in a cliffhanger
First Up is a Heads Up! I will be putting spoilers in here, like everywhere. So if you would rather not see that , please don't read. Second off, there are triggers in this story so please check them!
- - - - This book was doozy filled with plenty of twists, and although I suspected the outcome, it went a bit differently than predicted. Though there is betrayal and pack destruction, bullying and loss, it wasn't as intense as I was expecting it would feel like. I felt the author built it all up nice and slow, so that when the ball dropped, I just coasted along with it. - - - - Mila has been taking care of her dad since the loss of her mother at the age of 14. With the responsibilities of an adult presenting itself, our girl has had to learn to adept and take charge in life, that her wants and needs came second to her dad's. Seeing how Oliver (Omega) treated our lovely lady (Beta) with so much love and care, heavens ❤️ Not to mention the other two lovelies (Alpha's Barret & Lachlan) falling hard for her. I absolutely love Lachlan's pet name for her, Snowdrop, which is his favorite flower that he collects daily for her, the crazy sweet psycho.
The author wasn't joking with her warning that we would come to hate Gryphon strongly and extensively throughout this book. It took forever before we could see Mila mattered in some way, but honestly it felt more like lust than love. Even when we got a peek in that blasted head of his, everything revolved around his wants and the need to protect his Omega. Even when our girl was almost graped, not once but twice, he was set on Oliver's heat. I want to believe that this was a possible mistaken moment on the author's part, giving us some missed key moments that could guide me to a different view of him, but every time I got any information on this guy *huffs and rolls eyes* He felt less and less like someone worthy of our girl's good graces.
Gryphon has a lot on his shoulders, with the Alpha Governer consistently threatening him, the fear of his packs safety and something else that just feels off. But despite it all, he proclaims in the glimpses we get over time, that he honestly likes and cares for our girl. Well, sir, I need to see it cuz you are failing me here.
My favorite character is Lachlan. He stands out the most, the only one giving her a pet name and the first to show true interest and intrigue with our girl from theget-goo honestly. He is intense in a uniquely endearing way and goes ham on the dude that touched our tough as shit Beta, taking the guy out with full pleasure and I am right with him. The others are great but he is my focus and I adore him. 🥺 Again, there were some moments I felt like something was really missing and I never got clarity for my questions. Wether it was meant to be that way for a reason or because the author didn't think about the details, are left unknown but it doesn't stop me from demanding the next book, which thankfully is already out.
Oh, I almost forgot, the romance dynamic isn't what I was expecting when the author mentioned slow/medium. This is certainly not a book for those wanting the smexy time to be on fire. The author made this far more intimate, in a different way and I love it because often enough scent matches go all out right from the start. This is very slow and our girl is still proudly holding that v-card at the end of this book.
So, I did kind of like it. Even though, I have to agree, that there were many parts here, I know from mainly Pack Darling by Lola Rock. And the little I know from The Beta of Avanne Michaels (though, I haven't read it yet, but I know the blurb and have heard about it in my book groups. So, the situation is indeed very similar).
It's pretty obvious to me. It starts with names (Lilah/Mila). That she is not wanted by the Alphas of the pack she is placed with, but has a close relationship to the Omega. That she keeps her scent hidden. Or that she is female and there is a focus on the fact, that the male Omega is not able to have children. Other similarities I saw in some Alphas. Like, Lachlan is comparable to Finn from Pack Darling (the knives, psychopath description — though, he doesn't really fit the way Finn did). Or that Mila is first placed in a place, no one else should be forced to live.
Though, even with all the similarities, I wouldn't say it has to be a bad thing. Unfortunately, there isn't much you can write, that has never been written before and is truly new. And Omegaverse is such a genre, where that is difficult to achieve.
As I said, it doesn't have to be bad. And I really did like to read this. But I can understand why people are upset and call it unoriginal and not good in some way. And for another reason, it would have been better, that the author had done a better job at keeping the similarities at a minimum. Because in comparison to Pack Darling or The Beta (even though I haven't read it), it can't win. Those titles aren't so popular for no reason, and they are the originals.
Especially, the enemies-to-lovers trope was better executed in Pack Darling. The alphas were really constant in their behavior, and that made the feelings for Lilah much deeper. And as I said, I haven't read Avanne Michaels The Beta, so I can't make any assumptions there. But it was at least existing before this and therefore is on the radar for the readers.
It's not fair to compare this book with those two, but the author kind of provoked it. So, you cannot not compare it either now.
But even I couldn't prevent it from happening while reading. Which is why I found the book and the characters lacking. It was not bad, but truly, I wasn't as invested in this, as I had been with Pack Darling.
And I didn't like the lack of details, either. For example, I don't really understand, why the war training is so big there. Or why are there only two cities and besides those boundaries, there is nothing else? Or why are Betas hated by Alphas and Omegas? I didn't really could fathom it. Same with Governor Lily. If she is trying to get Oliver, why is she focusing on Mila? It would have made more sense, to get her on her side, then the other way around? I get it, she didn't like Governor Frederick. And his end goal was never truly explained either.
So, the world building and plot is difficult to grasp. So, hopefully there will be some explanation somewhere.
But despite all that, I finished the book fairly quickly, and I'm engaged enough, that I will want to see the ending of this. I would give it 3.5 stars, if I could give half stars, but I round it up to 4.
Besides the outright plagarization, the other issue I had with this book is it felt like the author left half of the book in her head. She would make statements like "Lachlan was a psychopath." but then have no interactions or other descriptions to back it up. In the first scene, he's described as having a crazy smile, but the rest of the book, he's sweet. There was almost all telling and no showing. I felt like this book was an outline of a book, and the actual details were never filled in. The male omega falls in love with Mila but there's not even interaction to show that. There's so much missing.
I am a huge fan of authors going back and doing rewrites, and this book definitely needs that. But the other issue is that it's almost plot point by plot point, a rewrite of The Beta. Which look, I work in an extremely creative field and I am 20+ years in my career. There's no such thing as an original idea; I have been on the internet since 1998, reading and consuming other people's ideas. I consider myself a digital pioneer and am not precious with creative ideas. But this was absolutely an entire book that took its scenes and plot points from Pack Darling and The Beta. There was a better way to do this book, which wasn't even better. The Beta has a lot of issues, and I appreciate the almost rewrite minus the sexual assault. But seriously, how does this book not have more call-outs for blatant plagiarism?
The author needs a better editor and beta team with greater knowledge of the omegaverse. They could have steered her away from the missteps she had made. Better authors have taken down their works when accused of this. I am conflicted. On the one hand, I want to read book two, but on the other, I am concerned that this book crosses a line.
I also joined the author's readers group with 1000+ members but almost no interactions, which leads me to believe that others have felt this too and are curious how this will play out. Anyway, the end of this book was not similar to the two books mentioned, which means there's hope for book two. That is, as long as it doesn't copy Evelyn Flood's Devoted.
I have a lot of mixed feelings and I wish 3.5 🌟 was an option as its more fitting. The book was interesting, this was a more animalistic take on the omegaverse, set up in a different world/society where there's a much stricter hierarchy and more emphasis on designation instinct. We weren't given a lot of world building but enough to get the gist and I didn't mind the unique take.
To this is the a book you just read and don't think too deeply about. The alphas personalities are amusing and a little crazy at times, our omega and beta are like poetry together, and the storyline keeps you decently hooked, but everything is on a pretty surface level depth. We're told a lot of things in the story vs having them shown and developed. For example its made clear that Mila's father is her whole world yet were never given even one scene where she calls and have a conversation with him? Or someone gets a non-lethal wound (won't spoil with specifics) but the recovery time, limitations, and overall reaction didn't match with what we were told at all.
What did have me wanting to pull my hair out was the communication between the pack, they would phrase things through their minds so well but not actually say the words out loud. I know it's a way to build angst/drama but I really wish they would just lay things out on the table. Gryphone was set up to be the ultimate asshole, but honestly I just felt bad for him. He seemed to be the only who realized that there were outside forces more powerful then them interfering and just wanted to keep his pack and omega safe the best he could. The endings is a little cliff hangery but since the next is already out and on KU I don't think it matters.
Editing wise there were a few British slang that felt a little odd considering the author put that shes "masquerading as an american" but they were pretty easy to figure out with context clues. In all other aspects the book was well written grammer and plot wise with only one minor detail contradicting a past statement.
first, the writing is soooo wattpad, like there isnt a flow between paragraphs and its just sentences, saying one thing after the other, sometimes just saying things that are so random, like what? 😂
there are some grammar errors, but i really didnt mind since i read this book like it was a wattad book and those are just horrendous with grammar errors
mila… idk bro 😂 shes veeeery insecure, it was so NOT giving “the beta” vibes, like at least in that book the FMC is a badbish and she knows her worth and knows her job and just kills it. mila on the other hand…
i do get why i saw some comparisons with “the beta”, bc ofc shes a beta who is trained to protect the omega, so yea, and gryphon is horrible to mila while on “the beta” i think all of them are pretty brutal but then tone it down… and ofc the beta and the omega rlly like each other, and the mmcs secretly like the beta, and the beta is not so much of a beta, so i believe the author may have been inspired by “the beta”, but the vibes are very diff, also the writing style so 🤷🏽♀️
also, when i started reading “the beta” it didnt make me wanna skip all the characters chapters except the fmc, i rlly wanted to see everyones perspective, but here, i just wanted to read olivers and milas ngl, they were the most interesting characters
so my final thoughts are: wattpad coded book with some grammar errors, very weird writing style, and insecure fmc when shes a freaking soldier and should be all proud that oliver likes her ass FROM THE START, some smut, but it isnt that smutty compared to other books..
This review will cover the entire series of books.
The genre of omega verse is a very underrated and misunderstood. The idea that it is all smut and no story just not true. Woven into most omega verse novels are themes of overcoming horrendous trauma whether mental , physical or emotional. But while this can understandably could trigger some people. I am not one of those people.
I particularly love this series. I’ve read a ton of this style of books. I gobbled up these books. A new concept emerged and well…. Guilty. Loved them.
I loved the last book especially. The alphas are flat out assholes and lacking in compassion. The male omega really holds all the cards and power in this dynamic.. Not to mention that the female omegas in each book are mates and scent matches to the male omegas. This creates a lot of conflict and the story unfolds from there!
Yes, even assholes can be redeemed in the end. It takes a massive reality check for the selfish and self centered alphas to get “their heads out of their asses”. These books explore these concepts in an entertaining way. All the while watching the growth of all the characters.
At the end of the day, the basic tenant of human nature is to feel valued, cherished, loved and protected. This is the basic ingrained nature of the alphas. The omegas job is to balance out the alphas. It’s a process that unfolds in each book.
You can overcome your deficits if you try. And boy oh boy do these omegas hand all these Alphaholes their lunches!!!!! Happy reading!
Look, this was not the best book I've ever read. In fact, the writing itself was bad. Basically every sentence was a new line. And all the sentences were rather short and choppy. And once you realize that, it's really hard to not be very conscious of the fact. That every sentence is a new line. (And no, I’m not exaggerating. I don’t think there was a single paragraph that was longer than two sentences. Literally the entire book was written like this. ^ )
That being said, this still scratched the itch I was looking for. It's got some dystopian vibes, without being super dark and depressing. It's got dynamics being treated poorly based on their dynamics (though in this case it's Betas, rather than Omegas). It's got conflict within the pack. It's got a male omega matching with an outsider--another omega.
It's plot was also interesting enough to keep me engaged despite the poor writing. Did everything fully 100% make sense? Not even a little. Was the pacing perfect? No. Did the end feel more like a random gotcha than something that was properly foreshadowed? Yes. Will I still be reading the next book? Yup.
So no, it's not the best book I've read. But it is an omegaverse with an interesting enough world that wasn't a copy-paste of other omegaverses worlds. And for that I will attempt to ignore the bad writing and just focus on vibes.
Would definitely not recommend, though. As others have said, there are better options out there that have similar plots without all the holes, actually decent writing, proper relationship building, and much better spice.
The plot in the blurb was a good hook. Unfortunately the story is so poorly executed it actually meets the standard of pathetic. 1. The grammatical errors are legion. 2. All the characters without fail are "without character". FMC - supposedly an elite trained soldier with emphasis on guard training, whom after 4yrs training is the "best". Upon arriving at the pack house does nothing but be a housekeeper. She doesn't do a single perimeter check of the house or property. No checking of entrances/exits, no reviews of current security protocols. Doesn't use one iota of her training. She spends the whole time in imagination land where it's a constant pity party. The basis of her even volunteering for this Beta program was to earn the funds to look after hee ailing Dad. As time goes on she becomes more selfish which culminates in her turning a soirée to show case the status of the Beta program to the Alpha and Beta Leaders into a "Cinderella" moment. She doesn't have 2cents to rub together in the brains department. She just wants to be in a pretty dress and have a coming out party.
The story is full of logic errors, repetition ad nauseum. Frankly I don't think any amount of editing could save this book.
This book actually made me not want to be a reader.
(This book was listened to as an audiobook.) Book ended on a HUGE CLIFFHANGER!!! Truly loved that this RH romance didn’t just dive right into nonstop smut. (Although, I do love me some smut…) The steam was low key and amazing. Female narrator was great, as she always is. But the male narrator needs to only do one male character’s voice. He shows no emotion or inflection, no difference whatsoever in the voices! He will get louder with one voice vs another but who wants someone yelling at them throughout their listen??
Now, the story. Basically, this girl decides to give up everything to take care of her dying, elderly father so he can die peacefully. She gives up her right to her own family and friends and makes several enemies along the way. She goes through a boot camp of sorts and graduates from that with top honors and becomes first pick (aka: a pawn) to be paired with an Alpha/Omega pack (aka: also pawns). There is a Beta governor (we will call him the king) and the Alpha governor (we will call her the queen). The queen and king are both very hinky. You don’t know what either of them is really playing at until the last 5-10 minutes of the book. There’s some really odd things going on in the book that might make some people get aggravated and say aw, hell naw… but, you’ll pick it back up bc you have to know what happens next ;-)
So, as other reviewers make clear, this is very similar to Pack Darling and The Beta. It’s much closer aligned with The Beta, in plot and maybe more like Pack Darling with characters.
That being said, I don’t hate this…..but it wasn’t great either. It’s both books mentioned but just….less. Less angst, less emotion, less feeling. The plot feels very half fleshed out, and the “bad guy” feels underwhelming. I didn’t really feel any real emotions from and of the male leads, except maybe Oliver. The others fell sorta flat for me. And Mika makes herself out to be this big bad ass straight outta training and then we never see it from here again with the one fitting room incident as the exception.
SPOILER:
The whole, “Oh, I’m actually probably an Omega, but I don’t wanna be but I do actually wanna be but no one can ever know my secret that I do nothing to hide “ thing fell so flat. She never commutes to believing she was secretly an omega, but also mentions her “secret” a lot. It just felt so manufactured.
I’m intrigued enough to read part 2 and see how the author closes everything out, but this is not one I’ll recommend or ever come back to.
I LOVE the storyline! It’s unique to other OV books, the first few chapters gave me The Beta vibes and I’m here for it! The training and conditioning Mika goes through to protect a pack omega is grueling. But she does anything she can to ensure her fathers care. I find it hard to believe she never really had any true friends, the story indicates that betas are really just cruel and heartless, even to other betas. I love how Oliver is immediately drawn to her. Of course Gryphon comes across as a jerk, but honestly I think there’s something else going on besides just Alpha Lily bossing him around. I feel like maybe she used her bark on him? He doesn’t discuss her demands with his pack. He doesn’t air his concerns about the pack’s safety which seems to be the first thing he would do. I finished this book way too soon and dread waiting for the second especially after that cliffhanger! I know there’s going to be an HEA at some point, but I am eager to get started reading book two so I can work through all the obstacles that will surely need to be overcome. Great afternoon read!
