It’s hard to stay ordinary when you have the power to reshape the world…
After a lifetime of cruel treatment for his illness, his strangeness, his sensitivities, all Jaime wants is to be ordinary. Unfortunately he’s heir to a magical legacy with the power to reshape the world. Or so says the most extraordinary man he’s ever met.
A member of the Royal Society of Magisters, Lord Adrian Lear is charming, persistent, and thoroughly convinced that Jaime is a water-worker, able to bend the element to his will, to use as a tool or weapon. A fact too strange for Jaime to believe, yet when their lives are put in danger by Lear’s age-old enemy, Jaime’s untested power may be the only hope they have to survive.

The Untouchable Sky is the prequel to a new Ace/Aro MM Gaslamp Fantasy series from author, blogger, and general nuisance Will Forrest.
Author, blogger, and general nuisance Will Forrest writes unusual (and usually queer) Historical and Paranormal Romances with a dash of mischief and mayhem, and grew up on a steady diet of Douglas Adams and classic 90s bodice rippers. Will has a diploma of fashion design, a degree in social theory, and a bad habit of changing careers, life goals, and continents. Currently they live in a very warm part of Canada with three lovely humans and a succession of martyred houseplants.
Pleasently surprised by this prequel novella! I found out about the novel because it has an aroace protagonist but knew little else about the plot.
We meet Jaime as an adult, jaded by the life he had lived already and trying his best to vanish into obscurity. But the appearance of Lord Adrian Lear throes a wrench into his plans and turns his world upside. I liked this - Jaime feels like a solid, well-rounded character and I am already interested to learn more about his past and see where the next book will take us. I found the introduction to magic equally interesting and the writing complementing the setting and atmosphere. The third act and its antagonist were not quite as well done but that does not detract from the fact that this overall made it clear that I will pick up Skye's Fall: Book One of the Jaime Skye Chronicles.
I loved this. I love the cover and title. The story flowed well and intrigued me. The language and the interaction between characters was perfect. I would happily continue this series.
Allow yourself to be gently placed into Industrial Era London. Above all, the author does a fantastic job conveying time and place. Great care is taken to ensure objects, articles of clothing, and dialogue are appropriate for the setting.
The story is delightful as well. It moves along slowly, not as propulsive as some would like, but that’s right up my alley. A young man who has been treated as a mentally ill patient his whole life is shown, by an elegant man, that he is not ill, but beautifully gifted. It is a wonderful and sometimes heartbreaking analogy for how a gay man may experience the world.
Finally, the ending will leave you wanting more. But it was a fairly quick read. If you’re looking for your next binge series, I highly recommend reading The Untouchable Sky!
