Debut from this author and what a debut…
Our main character is Monty and giving nothing away as is stated in the title he is a ‘serial killer’s son’
We find out, unsurprisingly, how badly having this unwanted title has affected him through his life and continues to affect him now
Naturally it is at times a squeamish atory but also one with emotion and gives the reader an insight on how events that cannot be controlled can and do stay with a person and shape their life
It is a ‘full on’ read and introduces some neurotic characters but are they quite as they seem to be?….
I went from dislike to disgust to sympathy in my feelings for Monty, a massively complex man…..but by the time the book ended I think I understood him and all made perfect sense ( and will leave it at that )
Very well written, at times challenging but at all times fascinatingly compelling
Very much look forward to more from this exciting author

This is the first book I've read by this author and I was really impressed by the gripping storyline and intriguing main character.

I knew from the title that I was going to enjoy this book.
I wondered how old the son was when he learned what his father was and how he'd been affected - also how he would present given his background.

I was totally gripped from the start. This was fast-paced and the storyline was exciting.
I'm trying hard not to say anything about the plot because there were so many twists and turns that you need the full experience with no spoilers.

Hearing Monty's story from the start, I felt so sorry for him and this made the present day so hard to judge as I kept flipping from feeling like it wasn't his fault, then finding him quite horrible.
I wonder if this would have felt different, had we not been hearing the story straight from Monty himself.

The pace slows down somewhat in the last third of the book, but I think this is done on purpose to raise the tension and suspense, preparing us for the brilliant ending!
I couldn't believe that I was left still thinking things through after I finished reading.

A great first read for me, can't wait to see what comes next from this author.

Depressing, probably quite implausible, not worth reading. Not even sure even his psychiatrist good. Maybe just not for me. Feels very unrealistic in so many ways.

I couldn’t put this book down once I started it. The plot feeds you question after question, and once you think you’ve got it all figured out, you’re proven wrong. The prose was wonderful, and the characters interesting. Definitely pick this one up!

I honestly don't know what I think to this book - it started off really strong, then went off in a direction I didn't expect it to, which at times was really good but then at other times I felt was a bit repetitive and very far fetched, but was right on the verge of being amazing but never quite got there for me.
There were lots of little twists throughout which I definitely won't go into as they will be a massive spoiler alert, but I feel everyone needs to read this book just to experience the huge twist!
Well written, and the flashbacks helped get a feel of the overall horrific memories Monty had, just not as fast paced as I felt it could have been.
Other reviews seem to be fantastic so don't let my review put you off as it definitely wasn't awful - just didn't quite hit the spot for me personally.

This story didn’t initially grip me but boy by the last half I was shocked. The characters were interesting but I do wish more thought would have been put into George. Maybe more speaking lines? It felt a little flat but I understand why it was written that way. The plot was great and the freaking twist was amazing.

‘The Serial Killer’s Son’ is a mind-bending psychological thriller that keeps you on the edge of your seat. I admire how @stevenson_charlotte did an amazing job building a unique character and voice. Needless to say, each and every scene that contributed to the story, although while reading I felt the pacing was suffering, was indeed a piece of the puzzle, and all those gradual pacing led to a satisfying ending. It is not a fast-paced thriller but a slow-medium-paced book that pays off at the end. The book emits a strange and eerie vibe that disturbs you to the core. I really loved this book. It took me by surprise when I thought I had figured out everything.

The story follows Montague Barclay(Monty), a wealthy businessman who has inherited his fortune from his adoptive parents. His biological father was a serial killer who forced Monty to help in his heinous crimes. After his father died, he was adopted into a wonderful family who loved and cared for him. When the last of them died, he is not sure he could hold himself together. He is terrified by his own way of mourning and he can't be sure if he can trust himself. Will he follow his father’s path?

This book was fantastic!

The book had twists and turns that made you feel uncomfortable.

Monty the main character, was well written and you felt for him but also shocked at the things he's done. He is such a morally grey character that you can't help but feel for him that you need to find out what happens to him. The side characters were a welcome as they helped the story flow and kept it moving

The plot and writing was well thought out and worked really well as we had flashbacks and the twist at the end was an unknown bonus to finish the book off. It kept a fast past throughout and you had an urge to finish to see what happens.

If you like serial killers and psychological thrillers this has everything you need. It makes you uncomfortable but your invested to find out what happens.

This definitely the book for you! Please check for trigger warnings

This is my first book by this author though, don't think it will be my last. This book caught me off guard but in a good way, it gripped my attention.

I was gripped from the start, with a fast-paced story and each chapter had me questioning what would happen. So I had to keep reading and every time I kept saying just one more chapter.

The book was well written and the storyline kept having flashback chapters, so you could better understand what happened to Monty growing up. How the way his father was effected him and had such a big impact on his life. Knowing this information, it happened take you deeper into the story.

Through the ending could have been a little better. It changed the course of the story and was just different then what was I was expecting to happen.

Thank you bloodhound books for the ARC

I really enjoyed this book. I found Monty equal parts frightening and fascinating! I liked reading how his relationship with George developed throughout the book. I couldn’t stop reading as I needed to know what happened next so I read it very quickly. I really couldn’t foresee what was going to happen at times. All in all a great book which I would recommend to all psychological thriller fans!

Here is my review for The Serial Killers Son by Charlotte Steveson

I got into this book straight away and found it a really easy book to read. It’s a fast read as well. The characters are made to stand out as the author describes them and what happens to some of them brings back painful memories for Monty from his childhood. He remembers his dad vividly and it still haunts him today and he remembers the difference he felt with the foster family. He has found it hard to forge a romantic relationship and that is what he is trying to do but going the wrong way about it. He has a faithful friend helping him but what he finds out about them surprises him and at first, he thinks he will be killed by them but he got it all wrong. This is an enthralling psychological book that had me hooked from the start and I read it to the finish in one sitting, I just couldn’t put it down. I really enjoyed this book and will be looking out for more books by Charlotte Stevenson to read in the future.

I know it’s the season of goodwill and jolliness and all things wonderful, but give me a story about a killer child over a Christmas-themed romcom any day 🤣

Monty initially presents as the perfect gentleman who has worked hard to understand and control his inner demons. And that was my main impression of him - control. Everything about the way he spoke and his daily routines screamed of a tightly wound character, and when that tight grip slipped - people suffered!

The story started off at quite a fast pace, then tailed off a bit in the middle and I started to find it all a bit repetitive and slow…but knowing the ending now it makes sense, and perhaps it was also an intentional ploy to make the final twist that much more unexpected. The writing style also made more sense once I’d finished the story, there were times I found it a little…flat? I’m not sure that’s the right word, but it’s hard to not give away spoilers 😁

I loved the mini chapters that interspersed the main story and gave an insight into the horrific childhood Monty endured; they really make a good case for the impact of the environment on a developing child.

It’s tricky to discuss certain aspects of this book without giving away the ending, and the ending is the perfect twist that I did NOT see coming so I really don’t want to spoil it! I questioned all of the characters at some point - this is a great example of not having a clue who is genuine and who is hiding deep dark secrets.

Overall a fab psychological thriller with a blinding end. I’ll definitely be checking out future releases from this author 🖤

⭐️4/5⭐️

The Serial Killer’s Son by Charlotte Stevenson

When I saw this book offered on the Bloodhound group as an ARC I immediately knew I had to read it. The title jumped out at me. The old phrase ‘Like father like son’ ran through my mind, there could be countless ways a writer could explore this. Will the son be like his father or nothing like him - this intrigued me, a lot. The author did not disappoint me!

From the first page I was captivated. I wanted to rip the child Monty out of the book and hug him tightly. As for the adult Monty, even though he is courteous he is also horrifying, yet I still felt sorry for him. The author has created a brilliant character, one where the reader sympathises with no matter what. Seeing things and feeling things from Monty’s point of view brings the reader closer to him, deeper into the story. The other characters are too drawn well, especially George, no matter how much is revealed of this character there remains a feel of secrecy.

The story is well written. The beginning flows exceptionally well, but towards the end things slow, there’s a sense of repetition (I sense this may be deliberate to help heighten the tension but you don’t realise this till the last chapter) and then there’s the ending — that completely throws the full story into a new perspective! I felt like I needed to reread straight away!

Did I like the ending? Yes and no. I love the way it changes the story completely but in a way I don’t like how the story is changed too.

I do highly recommend this psychological thriller.

Thanks to Bloodhound books for the ARC

The Serial Killer's Son" is a very dark novel. The prologue itself gives us a lot to think about. We are dealing with a murderer and his terrified son. It has long been known that like father, like son. Is Montague Barclays also a serial killer? Does he kill women in cold blood? Is he a faithful disciple of his father?

Our main character Montague, thanks to his father, went through real trauma in the first years of his life. I wouldn't wish what happened to him on anyone. He was marked by his father. He hears him voice in his head. Despite everything, he tries to live a normal life. After his tenth birthday, he was placed in a normal family. He had a brother who later started his own family. Unfortunately, Miles has died and, in his own way, Montague cannot recover from it. He runs his own company. How is he doing? You will find out as you read.

I'm happy with the whole plot. It's very suspenseful. I can confidently say that "The Serial Killer's Son" is an interesting psychological thriller. The author rocked it hard. The action is okay. At the end of the reading, I was so shocked that I still can't get over it. Wow, I'm so impressed. The ending of this story is in no way predictable. Kudos to the author for this.
After such a gripping story, I want more.
If you love strong psychological thrillers, you've come to the right place.
I wholeheartedly recommend "The Serial Killer's Son". To enhance some emotions, I encourage you to read this novel in the evening or at night.

“The serial killers son” was given to me as arc thanks to bloodhound books and here is my honest review.
This is the first book I have read by this particular author and my was not disappointed. The story follows the dark life of Montigue Barclay, who as a child lived with his parents until the age of 10 when he was taken into care due to his Mother disappearing and his Father being a serial killer.
Monty finds a loving home with adoptive parents and later in life learns the son of his adopted parents, Miles ,has died unexpectedly. This is where the story begins as the loss of Miles takes Monty to the funeral.
After the horrendous upbringing Monty clearly had issues and the death of Miles causes him to reach out to his previous psychiatrist just to go over where he is in life and how he is feeling in the wake of the death and also the new friendship he is developing in one of his staff members “George”.
Monty has done very well for himself in life living in a big home with staff there but he’s lonely and the prospect of a confident and friend like George is appealing and an Avenue he decides to pursue.
As you can imagine all is not what it seems in the very dark twisted storyline. I have read many books of this genre and quite honestly didn’t see where this was heading. It kept me interested right till the very last chapter. Very intriguing and very well written . Strongly recommend!

I am so thankful that Love Books Tours gifted me an e-book of The Serial Killer's Son in exchange for an honest review.

I've just finished "The Serial Killer's Son" by Charlotte Stevenson, and boy, did it send shivers down my spine! Let's break it down.

From start to finish, this book had me gripping the edge of my seat. The suspense was real, and trust me, I couldn't trust anyone – not even Monty! Stevenson's narrative style cranked up the tension, especially with that 'before' timeline. It's not a groundbreaking concept, but the way Stevenson wrote this book surprised me, I was not expecting that. Well played!

Monty, our main character, gives off major heeby-jeebies. Monty's childhood trauma made me feel for him, and the way he acts as an adult was a clear result of what he went through as a child.

And George? What an odd fellow! I honestly couldn't figure him out and I just didn't know what to think of him...until the ending when it all made sense, and that's all I'll say on that!

The writing style is a winner – a quick and gripping read that I devoured in one sitting.

"The Serial Killer's Son" is a psychological rollercoaster, diving into themes of damage, desperation, and escaping childhood trauma. Monty survived physically, but the question looms – can he ever truly escape the shadows?

If you're looking for a bone-chilling ride, this one's for you!

This was such a great read and a brilliant debut novel! A deep dive into the most disturbing corners of the human mind from such an interesting point of view!

There are several main themes in this novel in my opinion, such as how much the faults of the parents should be paid by their progeny and how much effect has parental behaviour. Without resulting banal or trite, this novel intrigues and entertains whilst also being deceitful.. I have lost counts of all the times I thought I knew what was happening and changed my mind after reading some more.. And then changed it again!

I found the writing style and the tone perfect for the main character Monty as it's written from his point of view. I also appreciated the brief length of the chapters and the back and forth between past and present. This in particular was very clear, as often it results confusing, but actually added more depth to the character. I also found that it made it very difficult for me to settle on how I felt towards Monty because of that jump between past and present.

The twist as well was spot on and I found the whole story very credible, as if I was reading true crime! I can't wait for the next book from Charlotte Stevenson!

Thanks to the author, Bloodhound Books and LoveBooksTours for a copy and this is my honest opinion.

This was my first book by Charlotte Stevenson and it certainly won’t be my last.

The storyline revolves around the MC, Monty, and the timeline mainly jumps between ‘Before’ and ’Now’ which gives you a growing insight into Monty’s life and how his past has, or hasn’t affected him.
His past, as a child, pretty much revolves around the fact that he and his mother were abused, mentally and physically, by his father, who just happened to kidnap and murder women, too.

The imagery that Charlotte portrays in the ‘Before’ makes you really feel for Monty and get behind him so much that you’re willing him to overcome his demons. He worries that he will become his father and kill innocent women and he is fighting to be as normal as he can be.
I became so emotionally attached to Monty’s character that I had ‘Dexter’ vibes—I really wanted to back him even when he could have the same murderous traits as his father

I absolutely loved the characterisations and scene setting that Charlotte created; she really puts you right there with Monty and everything he’s going through.
The ending was not what I expected—I actually thought George, his friendly assistant, was a baddie—and the end really hits you from a psychological perspective.

A superb read, and I look forward to reading more from Charlotte.

WoW another new author to me and what a brilliant book The Serial Killer's Son by Charlotte Stevenson was.......This book was an absolutely gripping psychological thriller from start to finish with so many twists and turns it left me all giddy in a good way, Plus it was hard to put down until I had finished.

When Monty was a child, he killed his father! because his father had been kidnapping and murdering women for years, forcing Monty to help. Monty survived physically, but deep down he knew he was different! He was adopted by a wonderful family who were loving caring, now a wealthy and successful man on the outside but in the inside he was hiding some big secrets and you know what happens to them......they have a way of coming out.

Years went by........Now the last of his adoptive family has died. Monty now lives alone in his beautiful manor house in rural northern England, with the closest thing he has to a friend is his faithful employee, George.

Monty has tried so hard to live a good life, but his father’s deeds still haunts him. And with each passing day he’s finding it more difficult to fight against the blood that runs through his veins . . . .

WoW......WoW......WoW this book was excellent and loved every thing about it.

I highly recommend The Serial Killer Son.

The Serial Killers Son really hits the ground running!
There's no gentle introduction,  no lead up. Just story from the very first page. I love how the chapters vary from past to present so we learn the backstop, but piece by piece. I love this way of learning a character. They do something in the present,  but then we learn about their past and it starts to make sense.

I found it unsettling, but in a good way. I'm wasn't sure if I could trust any of the characters. I felt so so deeply for the damaged child Monty was. But does that mean we can excuse the despicable adult he became?

George is a seriously weird man. I just couldn't work him out. He made me feel so uncomfortable.

The Serial Killers Son is a fast-paced, action packed thriller which will keep you on the edge of your seat from start to finish.

That ending was absolutely not what I was expecting! It makes so much sense it feels like it should have been obvious. And yet I did not see it coming! At all.

I highly recommend it.

The Serial K*ller’s Son is a fairly deep character story. Monty is the titular character, on the outside he appears to lead a comfortable life, on the inside he’s haunted by his father’s crimes. As a boy was forced to assist his father (the serial k*ller) in some of his brutal m*rders.

Monty tries to live a good life but will the crimes he’s witnessed and his father’s blood in his veins lead him down a darker path?

I love a good ‘sociopath acting normal’ novel, and this is a very good one, I was reminded of You, Unravelling Oliver, Engelby and Zoe Rosi’s forthcoming Courier. It’s a bit of a niche sub-genre which opens up disturbing new possibilities to a straight thriller.

You may suspect you know where this is going, but you almost certainly don’t.

I’m very impressed, it’s a deep, sometimes disturbing journey through Monty’s eyes that is very sensitively handled.

Recommended, and I look forward to reading Charlotte Stevenson’s next book.

This is a dark and twisty tale, right up my street. The plot focuses on wealthy Monty Barclay told in two timelines, now and “before”. Now he lives alone and has two assistants to manage his affairs and finances (and these assistants go on to play a major part as the plot develops). Whereas before Monty was abused, bullied and made to do unspeakable things by his serial killer father, leading him to spend years in therapy. Monty’s adoptive brother’s death seems to be a catalyst to a relapse in his mental health and Monty begins to wonder if he will start to develop the traits of his natural father.
I was getting slightly frustrated with the amount of naps that Monty needed but when we learn why I was completely blown away by the twist.
There is so much going on in this book that can’t be mentioned to avoid spoilers, it’s a very compulsive read and I can’t wait to read more by this author.

This psychological thriller has a storyline that makes you want to know more. By the last half of the book, I couldn’t put this read down. The twist at the end of the book made this story even better. If you love a morally grey main character, this book is a must read.

This psychological thriller wasn’t what I expected; but that’s not a bad thing. It has a couple of flashbacks into our main character’s life growing up, which while horrifying, casts suspicion on everything that comes after. I did feel like it got a little repetitive at times, which cause the pace to slow down. It was still a good read, and had a huge twist! More than the one, but the one I’m talking about is massive. A good read with more than a catchy title!

He survived. He escaped. His mother didn’t, along with many other victims. He was adopted and moved on. He learned to adapt and blend in. He may not feel things the way others do, but he has learned to fake it. But his brother just passed away unexpectedly, and now he is having some trouble, to say the least.

Thank you to Love Book Tours for the copy, all thoughts are my own.

‘The Serial Killer’s Son’ is a dark and intriguing book. It follows Monty, who was forced to witness and clean up for his father as a child and the unimaginable horror that was that childhood. Monty is now an adult and the past is far away, but is it really that far away? Who has more impact on his life - the father who brutally murdered women and made Monty help him clean it up, or the loving and wealthy adoptive family who raised Monty from the age of 10.

I found this book at times shocking and sad. I went from feeling such empathy for Monty to being horrified at what he was thinking which I think is exactly what Charlotte Stevenson wanted. This novel is fascinating and disturbing and a good read for psychological thriller fans.

What an incredible book. It starts off with before where we first meet Monty, and straight away, we see he is living in an abusive home. It then alternates between after all of that and during those abusive years.

It quickly moves onto an extremely controlled but sinister storyline, and we see Monty becoming more and more out of control. Things start to seem odd, but it's hard to put a finger on why, but reading different sections, I thought, hmmm, I feel like I need to remember that.

Then everything just explodes, and I found myself unable to put the book down and even took it with me to brush my teeth. Then suddenly, everything slots together and makes sense, but it has been done in such a brilliant way, I was mot expecting that in the slightest.

I 1000% recommend this book and would love to see how Monty gets on, but who knows.

I loved this book.

The author did a fantastic job at creating a psychological thriller that was filled with mystery, intrigue and twists and turns.

The main character is an odd character which made me question throughout if I could trust him, if he had just been broken beyond all redemption by his life. I think this book did a great job of showing how damaging some childhood experiences can be.

The plot was so good. The pacing kept me interested and I read this in one sitting.

The ending was so good- one of those ones that makes you go back and rethink everything you’ve read throughout the book.

This is a brilliant book and if twisty psychological thrillers are your vibe, I would definitely recommend this book.
