David Willis is no stranger to the world of webcomics, having started his first series, Roomies!, in 1997. Including Roomies!, he has five webcomics series under his belt, such as the sci-fi drama It’s Walky!, its more domestic sequel Joyce and Walky!, Shortpacked!, a look at action figures and pop culture, and Dumbing of Age, a story about college freshman. In 2005, he and other leading cartoonists formed the webcomics collective Blank Label Comics.

Raised in La Porte, Indiana, David Willis graduated from the Illinois Institute of Art in Schaumburg, Illinois with a Bachelor in Fine Arts. After college, he escaped the frighteningly-empty cornfields and hicks of Indiana to the frighteningly-empty cornfields and hicks of Ohio.

David Willis currently resides with his wife Maggie in Columbus, Ohio, where he surrounds himself with more Transformers toys than he can bother to count.

I love toys and once worked in a toy store so the premise already had me. After trying out a few strips online, it was funny enough for me to buy.

What makes Shortpacked! good was that it captured the feel of working in a toy store. There were some crazy customers and situations. I laughed at a lot of the jokes. I liked the characters and they each had their own personality. But it wasn't all good.

The artwork is a bit rough. That's to be expected since it's the first volume. It does get better as it progresses and it even starts to be in color. I kind of want to see how the next volume is with those consistent color changes.

Also, while I liked a lot of the jokes, I kind of wish there was still more overlasting arcs. A lot of it was just jokes and situations for a page or two, and while I liked a lot of them, I wanted more. Towards the end, it started to have longer stories.

I'll be at least picking up the next trade to see where it goes and how much Willis improves.

Lastly, Ninjas rule!
