Tying the Knot: Yesterday's Hero / White Lace and Promises

Rate this book
Available in one volume for the first Yesterday's Hero and White Lace and Promises, two of Debbie Macomber's classic novels about finding love in the most unexpected places.

Yesterday’s Hero: Nothing is going to keep marine biologist Leah Talmadge or world-famous photographer Cain Hawkins from seizing the opportunity to study the rare whales of the Diamantina Islands. But the traditional governor of the islands won't permit two unmarried people to live together, even for a once-in-a-lifetime expedition. The two refuse to miss out and decide to get married on paper only. And why not? They both desperately want to document the whales, and a fake marriage won't have any effect on their lives after this, right? But when the lines of their relationship begin to blur, the two must reevaluate what they want.

White Lace and Promises: Marrying Glenn Lambert was either the smartest thing Maggie Kingsbury has ever done or the craziest mistake of her life. It’s been a long time since they were children and best of friends. They went their separate way in adulthood, until a chance encounter at a wedding inspires a spontaneous leap of faith. As past disappointments and unhealed emotions start to wreak havoc on their lives, Glenn and Maggie need to decide whether they will remain strangers - or whether they belong together after all.

The Secret to Happiness

Tying the Knot - Marriage. The subject is the same, but went at it from entirely different angles. In both cases one thing became very clear, the secret to happiness, simple in retrospect, yet so many struggle with it. The key is communication. We can’t read each other’s minds (thank goodness), yet we expect them to know what we are thinking and feeling. As ridiculous and unrealistic as this is, how many fall into this trap. Listen, communicate, that’s the secret to happiness.

These two stories were originally written in an earlier period of Debbie Macomber's writing career. It her later books, she wasn't as explicit in the romantic scenes. I liked them but I could tell a difference.

There are two stories in this book, it's a shame you can't rate each one individually. The first story is a 2024 story which was excellent I would have given it a five. The second story is an older one from the 90s and it was horrible I would have given it 2

Good books. I liked the first one better than the second. But both are cute easy reads.

Unsatisfying stories from the 80s by Macomber. Premises shallow. Characters not very good. I remember reading her books in the 80s and 90s that were better than these two.

Two good stories about getting married first, then falling in love, and all the problems that come along the way.
