One of the perks of being one of the best wide receivers in the league was having my pick of cleat chasers looking for a good time. Unfortunately, the only one to hold my attention was the feisty brunette who wanted nothing to do with me.
Did I still try to flirt with her—you bet I did.
Did she fall for my charms? That would be a hard no.
Instead of laughing at my jokes, she pretended I didn't exist.
Until I tried to rescue her from a bad date, did she thank me? Of course not, but she did try to kiss me (at least, that was my version of the story). The girl was trouble with a capital T.
She was also smart, gorgeous, and all wrong for me—just ask her brother.
My best friend.
Dating her would be a terrible idea, but then again, I was famous for making bad decisions.
So, when her car broke down, and I came to her rescue, I offered up a way she could pay me back—one dinner! That's all I needed to prove I wasn't just a player.
I should have put a stop to things right then and there. Because now she wasn't just under my skin, but under my sheets too.
Until I messed up—big time, and now I have to prove to her that I deserved a second chance, because I refused to accept that it was game over.
I knew the rules, I knew the stakes, and I was playing for keeps.
I had the pleasure of ARC reading this book. It was my first book that I have read by S. Jones and I now can’t wait to read the rest of their work! JP and Riley are captivating. The ending was perfection and I wouldn’t change a single thing about this book. I could not put it down. I started it today and I knew I wasn’t going to be able to sleep tonight without finishing it. Add this to your TBR! Mark your calendars for its release date (10.12.23) because you are going to want to read this book! The way S. Jones writes is beautiful and they had me hanging on to everyone word!!
So, this guy was in a boating accident in which his high school girlfriend, Caroline, is hurt very badly. The FMC spends the whole book thinking she will always be second to Caroline. We’re supposed to believe that the MMC just feels guilty and loves the FMC, but honestly, I don’t buy it. During his single paragraph of apologetic drivel, he says he has to let Caroline go to love the FMC. Bro, you just spent the last 100 pages saying you already had?
Lots of OWD for an ex that’s not even physically around. This guy messed up BAD in the third act break up. Said and did terrible, borderline unforgivable things then has the FMC back within a paragraph when he tricks her into meeting with him. The worst part is, the drama was about Caroline. He literally breaks up with her because he (wrongly) thinks she told someone about Caroline and the accident. The things that he said just prove that the FMC is, guess what? SECOND TO CAROLINE.
He seemingly has no plans to do anything to get her back until the FMC’s own brother goes and tells him he needs to grovel.
Ugh I really wanted to like this boom but there were so many issues. And I'm not just talking about errors that should have been caught by ARC readers (which rhe reviews indicate there were ARC readers). There is no indication that this is a book where one of the characters (the H in this case) are still in love with a last partner. It really should be made clear in the blurb, or even with a content warning. Especially considering the blurb makes it seem the H is all about the h.
This is the second book in this series The Atlanta Arrows and this is a sports romance that is a must read. This is a brothers best friend romance, second chance romance forbidden romance that you'll just love.
This is JP. And Rylee's story and and Rylee never thought she'd ever be with this hot and sexy player.
He knows he's meant to stay away from her but the thing is he can't. JP was known for being a playboy with a reputation to match. But he's different and JP has been warned by his best friend to stay away from his sister but the attraction and the magnetic pull he's feeling is strong and something he can't deny. Rylee has always felt something for JP but never ever acted on it and never told anyone until now. She's always had fun flirty banter with him but he lets her know cheekily how he feels and the fact he's had big feelings for her himself.
I always love how this author writes her characters and I always feel a connection to them because she brings them to life so perfectly that you can't help but love them. I absolutely their chemistry and the connection and the will they won't they between each other. I love that this is a series and we get to see the sports guys and the team, the smoking hit team. I love the way this author writes and her style of writing is captivating and I know that every time I start one of her books I'll be hooked and that's exactly what JP and Rylee did, they captivated me and I absolutely loved the love story between them both and the fact that she's forbidden to him but he can't stop thinking about her now he's seen her again. I love how he's protective and the he'll do anything for the people he loves.
I highly recommend this book and this series and start with book #1 first because its amazing.
I’m kind of mad at this book. About 25% in, I started feeling like the writing was too choppy and just kept going back and forth on the same things, but I was starting to really like where the plot was going, so I decided to push through. Unfortunately, the writing only got worse, and I felt like the ending was so frustrating and could’ve been so much better. I was liking the dynamic between these 2 main characters and the hidden past of the MMC, but that just all fell apart. They basically had 2 third act breakups, and it was all because of poor communication. The MMC really fucked up in my opinion, and they made up pretty quickly in comparison, and then it basically just ended. The worst thing though, was that a chapter would end with that character feeling some type of way or making some decision, and then all of a sudden in the next chapter, it’s like that decision never even happened. For example, JP talked to Caroline and told her it was his final goodbye to her. Then, he says he feels like a weight is lifted off his shoulders and he was ready to go home to Rylee where he belonged. But once he gets home to her, he completely shuts down, puts distance between them, and won’t really talk to her, and seemingly for no reason, because last we saw, he was feeling ready to move on from Caroline! And that was only 1 of the many times something like that happened towards the end. It made every plot point feel nonsensical. Ugh thank you for coming to my rant, I really wanted this book to be better.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
The flirty and witty banter instantly grabbed my attention. Rylee and JP have hidden their feelings for each other using playful teasing. Rylee relies on her sassy and grumpy attitude while JP uses his playboy reputation to flirt with her and I adored their relationship. JP gives strong golden retriever energy, he’s not only charming but his loyalty is top-notch.
Everything about Rylee and JP’s story reads like a sweet brother’s best friend romance, with plenty of spice and a side of football, but things get intense once JP’s emotional walls caused by a painful past come into play. I loved the anticipation and the build-up of his storyline. This created the perfect amount of tension and I could feel the emotions.
I enjoyed the pacing, Rylee and JP have a history so the quick pace of their relationship felt right. I was immediately hooked with all the sweet and swoony moments and the ups and downs and heartbreak kept my attention. I was rooting for these two and felt the frustration when the drama worked its way in (without ruining anything there is some ex-drama and miscommunication in the third act).
Although this can be read as a standalone, I recommend reading Fumbled Love, Rylee’s brother and best friend’s romance, Maverick and Kinley make several appearances.
As expected, this series has captured my attention and I can not wait for the next book in the series.
I just want to say that I absolutely love the reverse grumpy sunshine. I'm not saying that Rylee is a total grump, but she's not the happy go lucky FMC that we often see, and I loved it!
We've got it all here; best friends sister, reformed playboy with a tragic past, football, did I mention a hot football player??
First up, Rylee.. she has an acholic ex who loves to cause lots of problems. She's "officially done with dating," her words not mine. Andddd she's not new to the life of football. Her brother Maverick is a retired NFL player, and his best friend JP still plays.
JP is know for being the playboy and always having a new girl just hanging off of him. But he's done with that life, and he's finally ready to take the chance on the girl he's been crushing on forever. But can he actually move on from his past?
I seriously loved everything about this book, but I was soooooo mad at Rylee's reaction when JP got back from Saratoga which led to a bunch of miscommunication. Which kinda bugged me. But the rest of this story had me hooked! I cannot wait to read the next book in this series!
I was absolutely bored out of my mind. I even put it off for a bit thinking coming back after a good night’s sleep would help. It didn’t.
There was zero substance to this relationship. No backstory. No hint at what it was about either character that the other was attracted to. There wasn’t even much in the way of sexual chemistry.
The writing was clunky. The punctuation was strange. Question marks when it wasn’t a question. Ending questions with a period. How do taillights approach someone unless they’re driving backwards?!
I found Rylee and JP got together really fast then broke up and Rylee took him back so fast. I prefer the build up to it. Not my favourite sports romance book
I’m not sure what I liked most. Was it Rylee and JP finding their way? It was it the hilarious reminders from Kinley that Maverick couldn’t be surly and angry when the tables are turned? Or was it just all of this? Probably all.
JP brings far more to the story than you’d think. He’s hiding things. Big things. Sad things. Things that actually have him frozen in a few ways. But Rylee just might be the one person able to withstand the guilt and regrets to find a way forward together. Of course, JP needs to not fly off the handle. Or blow up. Or say stupid things. Oh, darn. He’s a man, so you know one or more of these will happen. But it’s how everyone involved deals with the aftermath that makes this so great. Even Rhett’s…uh…genius helps. Trust me, everyone means well, but sometimes a good grovel and proof via actions are what the situation call for. And I promise, both are delivered spectacularly.
So now I wait for Rhett. I have a feeling his ride will be bumpy yet funny, and I look forward to it!
Not a big fan of this. Seems the first book needs to be read first before this book can be understood as JP and rylee previously in the first book. I didn’t read the first book, so I was actually lost here, as it was hard to read this as a stand-alone.
Felt it would have been nice if the author had written how they’d met in the past in actual scenes in this, so it would have been easier for me to relate why and how they were attracted to one another from the beginning, as it started off with both of them already having a crush on each other.
The way their relationship progressed was alright… a bit rushed, but what I didn’t like was the miscommunication. JP refused to share about his past but eventually did, but towards the end, he just didn’t put his trust in rylee despite her constantly telling him she would be there for him. And that hurt her feelings. I felt he did not grovel enough for her forgiveness, he only gave a speech and she forgave him too easily.
All in all, this book felt like something I’d forget very fast.
3.5 - Very shallow story, not written with any real depth of character or relationship. Drama between characters was ridiculous, as were their respective responses. Will not continue the series.
Ngl I actually went into this expecting to not like it because of one of the tropes it includes, but was pleasantly surprised.
Adding this FMC to the short but cherished list of FMCs that are eerily similar to me in terms of mindset. Maybe that's what I loved so much?
Anyway, this had some tropes I don't usually go for, and one of them (that would be a huge spoiler to explain) is one I still wasn't too fond of reading, but they moved past it well. The rest of it actually turned into a pretty cute story.
I added the grovel-is-good tag, but that's with a warning that this grovel is verbal only. There's no year-long redemption arc, no updating of the former little black book (yes, that's probably one of my favorites ever), and no tree filled with every post-it note ever written for her (please tell me you've read that book). BUT the things he says are very heartfelt and made me cry, and I felt like it was convincing even for my jaded heart. 🤷🏽♀️
‼️ Slight SPOILERS
Okay but I'm also some huge side-eye to miss FMC for her dancing with the ex part because girl you had to know that was coming with him wanting you back. And if her constantly brushing the MMC's worries off about working with her ex, and then going on a work trip with him were reversed and it was the MMC doing it, none of us would find that acceptable. So while I fully believe the FMC can usually do no wrong, this is one example where I expected better.
These two have had a thing for each other for awhile but Rylee isn’t looking for a fling and JP doesn’t date. JP is also best friends either Rylee’s brother and didn’t want to cross that line.
JP is sick of fighting his feelings for her, they have amazing chemistry together.
Rylee wants him but she is scared of being just another girl to him.
Their banter is amazing!
He wants to give her everything but he has something from his past that haunts him and she doesn’t know about it yet.
They start dating and things are good until they aren’t.
He has to grovel and hope that she will accept his apology and give him another chance.
I love how sweet he is. I love seeing the guy grovel after being an ass! I love that he feels comfortable enough to open up to her.
HE PRESSED HIS FOREHEAD AGAINST MINE. "I DON'T KNOW HOW I GOT SO LUCKY, BUT I SWEAR TO GOD, I WILL NEVER TAKE A MOMENT WITH YOU FOR GRANTED." HE PAUSED. "PLEASE DON'T GIVE UP ON ME." | GRIPPED HIS CHIN, BRINGING HIS GAZE TO MINE. "I CAN DO BETTER THAN THAT. I PROMISE TO FIGHT FOR EVERY MOMENT WE HAVE."
JP has been a dedicated bachelor for years after a traumatic experience in his teens, but he’s always crushed on his best friends little sister. Rylee, know what fame of football can do to a person but has always seen past JP’s playboy tendencies. When they decide to stop fighting their feelings, things get complicated.
Liked that they were up front about their relationship to her brother from the start. There was very little drama there. Liked their easy banter and sweet moments. Wasn’t too spicy but enough to be entertaining.
Disliked the breakup scene. Felt that Rylee overreacted a little but also she went out with coworkers, drank a bit and ended up dancing with not only a platonic male friend but was pressured into a dance with her ex boyfriend instead of walking away. While JP should have trusted her a little more, I felt that he was right in feeling angry over the dances and pictures.
Makeup scene was emotional and heartfelt. Very little football scenes, takes place in offseason. Does have a cute HEA.
Guys we’re reading book 2 of a series RIGHT AFTER reading book 1. Call the record books because I deserve an award please and thank you.
Fumbled Beginning is bringing— •Bother’s best friend •Football romance •Mutual pinning •Forbidden •Grief
Hints of JP and Rylee’s chemistry were popping through in book 1. So I was thrilled to buckle in for their story, but I got so much more than I expected. These two had me ensnared from the jump and S Jones capitalized on that by making the characters so easy to connect with.
This is a series best read in order because our Fumbled Love couple pops in to join the party. I’m looking forward to seeing what Rhett gets into in Fumbled Arrangement.
Romance trope: brother's best friend Series: The Atlanta Arrows Length: 292 pages
Plot: JP has been crushing on his best friend's little sister, Riley, for some time, but she only sees his reputation, despite having her own crush on him. But maybe he can convince her to give them a real shot at something special - until he can't move out of his own way.
Commentary: I've seen the vegetative/comatose girlfriend trope before, and it always makes me wonder how that would play out in real life. I mean, I can't imagine many things more difficult to deal with. In that sense, I felt so sorry for JP. He had a great family and fantastic future ahead of him, but that one situation put up this roadblock that would affect him his entire adult life, emotionally speaking. I think that Riley was definitely right in breaking up with him when he . He just kind of lost it there! He needed some time to get himself together.
I am stunned. I was so nervous coming into this book because I wasn't sure if the something bad JP did was cheating or not. I absolutely loved watching JP and Rylee fall in love. The entire time reading, I could feel my anxiety spiking as I was waiting for the other shoe to drop. While that shoe did, in fact, drop breaking not only Rylee's heart but mine as well. I am just so disappointed that I didn't get more during the epilogue, I hope reading further in the series will give me more JP and Rylee. If it's not obvious, I absolutely love this book.
I’m struggling to finish this book. I’m curious to discover the mystery, but this book is so painfully boring I don’t know if I’ll managed to make it through. This will likely be a DNF. Cardboard characters. No wit. Just slugging through the plot. I feel the author has no life experience, because the two relationships I have read in the previous book and this one are so shallow.
I’m giving this two stars, because writing is not easy, so congrats on finishing the books.
If I manage to get through this book, I’ll update this review.
Absolutely love JP and Riley. We met both of them in Maverick's story. JP is his best friend, Riley his little sister. Which by Bro Code that makes her off limits. However, JP can't stop thinking about her. Riley knows JP as the "player" of the team. Different girl, every night. She wants someone to settle down with. Although, she can't stop thinking of him either. JP has secrets from his past. She has a ex who doesn't know the meaning of no. Can they get past all of that to get their HEA?
I knew once I started I wouldn’t be able to put this down. The banter was off the charts. I loved everything about this couple. The chemistry, the flirting, push and pull were amazing. JP was a good guy trying to do the right thing. Rylee was fun and loved to keep him on his toes
Great story, great character and now I can’t wait to read Rhett’s book. This is my favorite series.
I wanted to love this but I just didn't connect with the characters or enjoy the writing style. I picked this book because the mmc is a NFL player. I was disappointed that the actually story takes place during the off season so zero football scenes.
There were some funny moments but overall this was just meh. The epilogue is the only reason I bumped it to 3 full stars
I loved this book from start to finish. Jp Watson NFL player and Rylee Cross. They both tried to resist the attraction towards each other. She was off limits . She was his best friends sister and he didn't want to cross the lines. Glad to see that they threw caution aside and followed their feelings. Their first date was unexpectedly sweet and spicy! Loved the banter between them and how he always calls her sunshine. Oakley Rylee's dog is so lovable. Jp's friend and teammate Rhett had me dying what a ball buster🤣. Jp's past broke my heart. How he faced up-to it. You would think an alpha football player would not be as sweet and committed as he is to Rylee. Didn't want this story to end. Couldn't stop laughing and smiling reading the bonus epilogue. One of my favorite reads this year.
