Detective Olivia Collins relies on her instincts, her uncanny ability to see beyond the surface and unravel the intricate web of murder cases. But the one in Tolleson is different. She is paired with rookie detective Nathan Steele, and together they uncover a world of werewolves and vampires that may be connected to the murders. Olivia, adamant she doesn't need a partner, finds that everything in this case is challenging that. And to complicate matters further, she feels drawn to both her rookie partner and the mysterious suspect, Xavier Knight. Can she learn to trust having a partner and outrun the devil, or will her choices land her in hell? As they delve deeper into the investigation, Olivia and Nathan uncover a hidden world lurking beneath the shadows. Werewolves and vampires become part of their reality, and the evidence suggests a link to the string of murders. Olivia's skepticism clashes with the undeniable truth, and she is forced to confront a reality she had never imagined. In the midst of the chaos, Olivia finds herself torn between two individuals who stir conflicting emotions within her. Nathan challenges her fiercely guarded independence with his determination and unwavering loyalty, while Xavier Knight, the enigmatic suspect, both intrigues and unsettles her. With each twist and turn, Olivia's resolve is tested. Trust becomes a precarious tightrope to navigate, as she questions who to confide in and who to suspect. The lines between good and evil blur, and the consequences of her choices become increasingly perilous. Haunted by her own demons and the weight of her decisions, Olivia embarks on a journey that forces her to confront her deepest fears. She questions her own instincts, her capacity for trust, and the limits of her abilities. The answers she seeks lie hidden within the darkness, and she is determined to outrun the devil that threatens to consume her.

I got this book as an ARC read and all I can say about it is that I loved it! It is more a paranormal murder mystery than a romance and that is more than fine with me. There is chemistry between the MMC and MFC who do have get it on plus there is more or less one sided chemistry between the vampire and her. (He has a thing for her) The plot is amazing and keeps you wanting to read so that you can figure out who is offing the college girls. The characters are very well written. I love how our MFC, Olivia, was a teen mom (age 17), but raised her daughter became a detective and fiercely loved and protected her daughter as a single mother. She also overcomes some trauma and goes to therapy albeit against her will. The paranormal vampires and werewolves are subtle. They are something quite a few people know about but don’t speak of…just keep as a secret. Kind of cool. I highly recommend reading this book. She does have triggers if you need them. Again this is an amazing read and I suggest picking it up!
I was lucky enough to receive an ARC copy of this book and let me tell you: this book is super fast paced, has great character development, and twists and turns that I did not seem coming. Definitely a great murder/mystery with some paranormal aspects to start out the series. I cannot wait to read more!
If Olivia Collins is known for anything, it’s the fact she believes she doesn’t need a partner. The supernatural elements of this book are very interesting, I like a good detective book. The added romance was a bonus, I was rooting for them from the beginning! I really enjoyed the twist at the end, I wasn’t expecting it at all and it makes me very excited to read the rest of the series when it comes out!
I received an Arc of this book and I’m super grateful to have been able to have this opportunity.
I love a good mystery with a subplot of romance and while I’ve never read a book that had supernatural/paranormal creatures (ex. Vampires and werewolves) I was pleasantly surprised with how much I enjoyed that aspect! Overall, I really enjoyed this book and would definitely recommend it!!
This book had me believing in the supernatural and the fantasy. I had thought I knew exactly what was happening, but in the end it was all different. This book made me laugh, cry, and angry. I loved every minute of it!!!
Great triller with the plus of supernatural creatures! Was definitely a slow burn with a lot of self reflection for the FMC. If you like a criminal triller with supernatural treats then this book is for you!
I was lucky enough to receive this book as an ARC read and all I can say is I'm beyond grateful for the opportunity.
This book was amazing and the suspense of this paranormal murder mystery/ romance was captivating and keep me reading until 2 am some mornings. The chemistry between the mmc and fmc was pretty hot. Interested to see if there will be a second part, n hopefully there is, to wrap up the ending. Was neat to read a story of the fmc being a mom n older was different in a good way. Highly recommend this book and looking forward to reading more books by this author.
V.L. Summers has hit this out of the park. This is a fun, fast paced novel with romance, heart, mystery, intrigue, and the supernatural. I was left wanting more. I love the new trend of pushing out main characters who typically wouldn't be seen in mainstream media, so Olivia Collins was very refreshing.
The plot was detailed and intriguing. I love third person stories and felt that Summers did well in personalizing Olivia through third person (which can be tough to do). Loved Xavier. But I think I'm just a vampire simp at this point.
I'm excited to see the final, polished version of this book. Highly recommend.
I received this as an arc read and I have to say I’m glad because it was very different than the things I’ve read.
First thing I have to say was the 3rd person at first was hard. And I mean so hard! Took me about five chapters and a day before I got into the groove because I was like 3rd person is not for me at all. I struggled with the beginning because it felt a little like paraphrasing and summarizing a lot but it got a lot smoother.
Even though I made the previous points I want to say I loved the story! I thought the FMC’s premonitions were interesting but didn’t think much of supernatural creatures until it was brought up like 64-65% of the way through the story. Maybe it just needed more world building. But then again, she didn’t know she was part of that supernatural world herself. So maybe just a little more build up and self realization.
Speaking of the FMC, I liked her a lot! Being a single mother and a detective in a male dominated field( being male dominated wasn’t mentioned but still) she was independent and strong trying to solve things on her own. And the journey of her coming to terms it’s okay to need someone or lean on someone for a little assistance even taking care of herself physically and mentally by the end was well done.
Xavier’s bit confused me a little. It was like when did she realize or think of him as a love interest? Before or after he bit her? Lol. I’m not sure if he was alluring because he was a vampire or she just found him attractive but I was PRAYING she would choose Nathan because like, he tore her walls down and was persistent in such a respectful way and I loved it. I think her and Nathan are cute.
Despite me feeling the supernatural aspect was brought in a little late, I enjoyed it a lot! The story of this detective and the real fear she felt when it came to her job, or losing her daughter was relatable. It would be terrifying! And the gruesome scenes she came across during the case??? Insane. I thought it was going to be something completely different than it was so the plot twist was nice! I thought the detective story line was done amazingly when captivating aspects of the job and a case and even experience she had over a rookie like Nathan.
The story definitely wasn’t a three star because even with the little things that bothered or confused me it was a really good read! So four star it is💗

I read a lot of fantasy and was caught off guard by the way the author cleverly mixed it in with a murder mystery theme! In the beginning, it gives off the energy that you are reading a true crime book about a detective and a fatal decision that leaves her with PTSD. Slowly ever so slowly, werewolves and vampires are brought into the mix. I was very impressed with how the book started and meshed the two worlds together. However, the author is extremely thorough with her descriptions of scenes, they begin to feel redundant and overly dragged on. But she uses extremely beautiful and detailed scenarios. They just felt too much at times. It was a very slowly built-up book, it took me twice as normal to get into this one. I did enjoy the book but felt I needed time in between to build up that curiosity for it as well as a break to digest everything going on. Felt like a lot but slow as well. At the same time, I felt there were a massive amount of moments where there were holes in the storyline. Not sure if that’s because they will be answered in book 2, or if they were just left unnoticed.
The spice level was almost nonexistent, not descriptive, sped through, and left me feeling like I was reading a rated PG-13 book and not an adult book.
Female MC is a wild spirit who was hurt and you get to ride along with all her trauma and pain. You also get to see her push her walls to find healing, possibly love as well.
Interesting ending semi-cliffhanger was a nice touch and got me wanting to read the next book. Overall I did like the book, Was I in love with it? Not really but would I read the next books? Definitely. I am hopeful that the next books will pick up the pace, and the spice and answer all the questions the book one didn't do.
Received as an arc and all opinions are truthful and solely my own. Thank you for the opportunity 🖤
With love, Bunny the arc reader / book w h o r e reporting for duty, ready to spread pages for you. 🫡👹
I was honored to have received an ARC of this book. I appreciate the time and love that goes into writing an entire novel.
What I liked about it was the themes of healing after trauma, strong mother/daughter bonds, and the seeking out of justice.
However, there were some pretty gaping plot holes in this book that were difficult for me to get over. Glossing over the accidental shooting of her partner- not sure that someone would just be allowed back on the force without a great deal of investigation. It also seemed to jump quite a bit and the paranormal aspect was not explained in a way that made sense. While I appreciated the amount of details about the main character’s emotions and the scenery, some of that time could have been spent on building the plot. There was a lot of repetition- example, “the bustling bullpen”. Additionally, I did not enjoy the constant use of each character’s full names. It seemed like a space filler and was unnecessary, especially later on in the story.
I did really enjoy Xavier’s character and hope he is explored a bit more in the next novel.
I was given a copy of Outrun The Devil by Author V.L. Summers.
My reviews do not come with spoilers.
I first want to say this book was up my alley first because it was a thriller, second since it contained paranormal creatures and most of all it was supernatural!!!!!
The main protagonist is Detective Olivia Collins who is a single mother who has the "sight". After an accidental shooting she tries to hone in on her gift of seeing the future. Olivia has been given a new partner and a case that needs to be solved ASAP. With her gift getting stronger and stronger she has to start deciphering what is real truth and what and who is telling the truth.
There are so many twists and turns in this book it had me on a road of saying to myself....what is happening??? Who is the good guy or who is the bad guy. Who is telling the truth and who is lying.
This book was a great read with Vampires and Werewolves and that was right up my alley!!!
What a book! I got the ARC read and was like this sound like a very interesting book… and I was so right. This book is so different from what I have been reading these past few years. I do read mysteries and cop/ detective books with romance and of course supernatural books with romance and romance books without supernatural beings, but I have never come across a book with all of them in one. This is a book that inspires me to try and figure out the case alongside the characters, you get invested in the FML characters(at least I did) she is an inspiration for those who struggle with mental health issues and she is a very good example of what NOT to do and what TO DO when you are ready for help you seek it and you hold on to what is the reason you want to get better and what it is you live for.
The ending took me by surprise but not really, I knew there was a reason I didn’t like that character, can’t wait to read the next one

I have some mixed feelings about this book. I liked it as a police novel as in the crime was interesting and I was invested in how it would be solved. I thought the paranormal parts of the book were lacking and maybe a little surface level in the way once Olivia learns about the supernatural the reader doesn’t really get any further world building or lore specific to the novel or story. At the end of the case I wanted just a bit more information or context about the paranormal part and it’s impact on the city, like what the ramifications of the crime could be. Overall I enjoyed reading it and thought Olivia had some good depth being a young mother and a cop and how that fits into her actions and motivations. A big that you to V. L. Summers for a copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.
A gripping, intriguing, and suspenseful read. In this multifaceted book, V.L. Summers explores the themes of detective fiction, murder, mystery, and the world of vampires and werewolves. The story follows detective Olivia Collins solving a case with a murderer taunting her. She is also navigating through and understanding the visions she has, as well as dealing with her PTSD. I enjoyed that it started as a detective novel and led into the paranormal world. Although I enjoyed reading this book, there were a couple of drawbacks. There were some plot holes, it was slow-paced, and it needed more buildup to the rising action. Overall, I am glad that I read this book. I enjoyed this book because it kept me guessing what was next. This is book one of the series, and it was a great introduction to what is to come.
ARC: I enjoyed reading this book and it definitely held my interest throughout. It captured my attention with the mystery of the crimes and the intrigue of her visions. It kind of just jumped into the paranormal but it didn’t mess with the storyline. However the ending/epilogue really threw me off. I do feel like there were a lot of open ended questions that didn’t get answered or led nowhere. What’s the past connection between Olivia and Xavier, what’s the deal with the reporter bc she was around before Nathan, any significance about her mom’s boyfriend that she never got to meet? The key at the end and where/who it led to? I don’t know if there’s a second book in the works but those are just thoughts I had.
I received this book as an ARC. I give it a solid 3.5/3.75. I was immediately captivated by the writing style. It was very fast paced and not drawn out. I also feel this book is really laying the foundation for future books within this series. The FMC is badass and I really felt a connection to her and how she chooses to live her life. I love thriller books, and just started into dark romance. I wasn’t sure how I would respond to the Fantasy, Supernatural aspect, but I’m sold after reading this book. I would definitely call it a Fantasy Thriller. There is a touch of romance but no real spice. I enjoyed the mystery aspect of it as well. I am definitely looking forward to future books in this series, as this has been labeled Book1.
I rated this 4.5/5 ⭐️I loved this book! It was such a page turner! There were some twists and turns! This book had me on edge up until the very end.
The mc is portrayed as a strong and independent woman who is raising her daughter alone. Throughout the book she is working on her past trauma, shes very guarded bc of said trauma. She also loved working alone so she was against having a partner which shoot Nathan could be my partner lol 😉 i do wish we could’ve seen more of Xavier but theres more to come so I’m excited to see where Olivia’s next adventure takes her as she recuperates and learns more about the paranormal world she had no idea she was living in.
This book was such a different take on the supernatural. I really enjoyed learning about Olivia and the world she now finds herself a part of. She is a bad a$$ detective that has to juggle many jobs. She has a daughter and a career. Past experiences have made her a wary person. So when she is forced to have a new partner, she balks at every turn. She will learn that she needs to put her faith in other people as her life comes on the line. This novel contained many elements of what I enjoy reading; mystery, serial killer, intrigue, romance and danger with a mix of the supernatural. This is a must read if you enjoy all of the named elements.
I received this book as and ARC copy from V.L. Summers.
An action packed thriller with unexpected twists and super natural creatures and abilities. Detective Olivia Collin’s doesn’t need a partner. Or so she thinks. When Olivia gets thrown into an unnerving case that pushes her to her limits, she finds herself relying on Nathan for support. When things in the case take a turn for the supernatural will Olivia and Nathan solve the string of mysterious murders before the perp can threaten the thing Olivia holds most dear? Her daughter Jessica.
I received this book to ARC read it. Let me say, first of all, that the author is a beautiful writer. The way that she is able to describe the scenes in her book, makes it really easy to visualize what is happening. Her choice of words made me feel as if I was reading poetry. The story itself is amazing. It is filled with mystery, intrigue, romance, and of course, fantasy. This is by far my favorite genre to read. I can just read the book and escape into another world. I will absolutely be reading the rest of the series when it comes out.
This book was absolutely phenomenal. I was chosen as an ARC reader and I was completely obsessed from chapter one. This book is so well written, with twists and turns around every page! It follows a female detective who is strong brave and bad ass. The author tells the story with such ease that i couldn’t put it down! It’s thrilling but also has fantasy and love, paranormal characters, and empathy and so much more! I will be purchasing a hardback copy as soon as they’re released because this book has quickly become my new favorite thriller/fantasy!
The writing is very eloquent and detail-oriented, which I loved. There were twists and turns in the story I wasn’t expecting and it kept me on the edge of my seat. This is definitely a page-turner!
Our main character is presented as a strong, independent woman who is raising her daughter on her own. She is guarded, brave, and strong and despised the idea of a partner. I always love a good female lead that’s independent and can be the lead in her field without a male counterpart.
The book overall had a good story line to it. The characters were great, but it seems a little rushed and there wasn’t a good amount of build. There were times I think we jumped a few days ahead, but wasn’t 100% sure we did if that makes sense. Olivia was a good character, her working through her trauma was a good part of the story. Nathan’s protectiveness was a nice touch. I do wish there could be more about Xavier’s character, I could’ve done with a few appearances from him.
I first want to say thank you for trusting me to be an ARC it takes a lot to trust others to read you’re work with that being said this book was absolutely amazing yes it made me cry laugh and a few times want to punch someone 🤣 I’m glad she and her partner Nathan finally got along 🤭 I loved the supernatural in this book and I’m a sad little nerd I need the next book like yesterday 🫣i highly recommend this book10/10 I can’t wait to read more of you’re work
Detectives vs Supernatural! Received an ARC of this book and really liked the whole story/plot, devoured this book in one day. So many twists and turns that I didn't expect. If you like vampires, werewolves, murder mysteries, slow burn romance, this one is for you. The FMC is strong independent detective trying to overcome past trauma, and the MMC is a supportive swoon-worthy rookie detective with a secret. Highly recommend.
I read this book as an arc reader. The MFC is a detective who also has visions of events. The story portrays her as a dedicated mother and detective, but she closes herself off to the idea of a partner due to a traumatic past with her first one. This story does contain werewolves, vampires, and witches. Overall, I liked the story. However, the beginning seemed very wordy and repetitive. It got better about 60-70% of the way through.
Do you like vampires with murder/mystery mixed in? Then this is for you. This is different from any other vampire book I’ve read it’s got paranormal mystery murder. It’s a single mother, raising her daughter on her own and she is a detective. She’s a very strong, female character dealing with her own past trauma. The ending had me wanting more and can’t wait to read what happens next.
