London Granger gave up her modeling career for investigative journalism only to discover no one would hire her to write anything important. The only way out of her dead-end job? Investigate something the internet will actually read. That’s how her next assignment becomes “What’s it Really Like to Date a Billionaire?” Her boss hooks her up on a glitzy getaway to St. Kitts as the companion of obscenely wealthy Miranda Northbrooke. Miranda’s only when they inevitably run into the ex who dumped her, London must play the role of Miranda’s adoring new girlfriend.
Tennyson Securities protects the rich and famous, and Kayla Tennyson built it from the ground up. She has more money than she can spend, but when you move in the circles she does, sorting through the fakes and finding someone honest and genuine is tough. She’d tried with Miranda Northbrooke, and it ended in disaster.
London isn’t sure what she expected of Miranda’s ex, but it certainly wasn’t icy beauty. And while Kayla would like to write London off as Miranda’s new plaything, she can’t get past how smart and funny she is. London and Kayla are perfect for one another, but if London reveals the ruse, she risks not only the opportunity of her career, but Kayla’s trust as well.
Lambda and Golden Crown Literary Award-winning author Georgia Beers lives in Rochester, New York. She has been writing for as long as she can remember, and published her first lesbian novel in 2000.
I really liked this book. I started it with some doubts because this author has been a bit hit-or-miss lately, but I think she nailed it this time. The main characters are London, a former model now writing for a current events magazine. Up until now, it seems she's only been given shallow assignments, but she wants to take things to the next level. To her surprise, her boss agrees to her suggestion for a new article. Encouraged by her roommate, she pitches the idea of writing about what it's like to be a billionaire.
The other main character is Kayla, a badass bodyguard who runs her own VIP protection agency. She's in St. Kitts, a super exclusive island for the ultra-rich, guarding an actress. Meanwhile, London's there supposedly hanging out with a media mogul named Miranda, who also happens to be Kayla's ex. Needless to say, drama is guaranteed.
So, what's expected ends up happening, but it's not entirely predictable. Although the island's exclusive atmosphere seems to limit situations, there are still plenty of opportunities for encounters, misunderstandings, and surprises. Some might not be so surprising to the reader, but they certainly are for the characters.
All in all, it's a light, fun read. I really enjoyed it.
Publisher Bold Strokes Books was kind enough to provide me with an advanced reading copy via Netgalley for an honest review
Can't Buy Me Love by Georgia Beers is a fun, light romance set against the backdrop of luxury and miscommunication. The story follows London Granger, a former model turned writer, who joins billionaire Miranda Northbrooke on a lavish vacation for an article. Enter Kayla Tennyson, a confident bodyguard, and sparks fly. However, complications arise from misunderstandings, especially Kayla’s belief that London is romantically involved with Miranda.
While the premise is intriguing, I found the relationship development between London and Kayla a bit lacking. The miscommunication trope felt overused, leading to frustrating moments, especially since the connection between the main characters felt rushed and not fully realised. There was potential for more depth in the narrative, but it leaned heavily on surface-level drama.
Though the story didn’t fully resonate with me, fans of slow-burn romances with a touch of escapism may enjoy this breezy, beach-read. Despite its flaws, it delivers lighthearted moments and some entertaining tension.
Many thanks to Netgalley and Bold Strokes Books for a copy of this novel. ARC provided in exchange for an honest review.
This is a nice romance about Kayla Tennison who owns a security company. While on assignment in St Kitts she meets London Granger who is an ex model turned writer. She’s writing an article about living with a Billionaire. Her boss sets her up with Miranda Northbrooke who is a billionaire.
I liked Kayla’s character, she was tough and competent. Miranda while inheriting her wealth worked hard in her family business.
I have read most of Georgia Beers books and this one was not as good as others. It was a quick easy read.
ARC received from Net Galley for an honest and voluntary review.
Well, I'm one of the few to give this a 5 star rating. I found it to be a beautiful, quick read. You can't help but pull for London and Kayla! You throughout the story also want Miranda and Halley to become a couple. The epilogoue ties everything up nicely. Again, 5 stars!
I didn't quite get in to the first chapter. Beers does great banter but when it is at the start of the book, in an established friendship, I find it difficult to go with the flow, like joining two people you don't know at a party who are having a conversation already. However character was established and the book flew by after that. (Not that the first chapter was slow!) Interestingly, there isn’t really a barrier at first. The synopsis tells us there is a bit of subterfuge or not quite truth told, and we know there is complexity with the ex, but 40% in that has not transferred to issues yet. Pacing isn’t an issue and the mains have just moved past being silently interested….. Around the half way point, I’m a bit impatient for the plot point of one main discovering the other is on holiday with her ex, and the ramifications of the plot points round that. I wouldn’t go as far as to say pacing has has slipped, but it has definitely loosened a bit. Well the author did what I asked, and did it really well. The amazing thing is I have vacillated between liking the ex, and not. The writer is deliberately doing this, but she is doing so, so effectively, I am helpless but to do anything but go along with it. Well! I enjoyed this book, hence 4 star rating. (Rounded up from 3.9.) I’m not usually a fan of peacock proposals but I like what the writer did here. One final thought, there were a few scenes where guys tried to hit on one main, or one main and her companion. Although this happens in other novels, it seemed odd in this one. I think probably because it was several different walk on characters. In other novels it tends to be one and done. This is a reality for women either on their own or at least without male company. There is an expectation the company of a male will be welcome. It’s not a big part of the book, but struck me that I don’t see it in books that often.
This read wonderfully, and I really enjoyed it. I have always enjoyed how Beers writes a slow burn. Personally, Beers is one of my favourite authors for this.
I rated the book four stars because there wasn't much going on. That's fine , I don't expect drama or the circus running through. I think the weird stalker could have been explored more. Normally, I wouldn't suggest this in a romance, but I think Beers would have done it justice.
London and Kayla together were just a pleasure to read on paper. Even interactions with our sides. Aria, I would love to see her story of love because I think she's awesome.
For what I needed today, the book offered it. Once again, I am grateful for the time it takes to create a book for me to read and dive into another universe.
would like to thank netgalley and the publisher for letting me read this book
an ex model turned journalist and would be writer london grainger was bored writing her fluff pieces for the newspaper she worked for....so when she pitched a new idea to her editor, she was very much glad he ran with it and introduced her to the woman that was about the change her life....
miranda northbrooke was a billionaire, and the plan was that london would join her for a week away at st kitts where the wealthy and the rich partied hard.... or relaxed ...whatever they wanted was available at their fingertips... it was the story of a lifetime for london
Kayla Tennyson had built her business Tennyson securities from the ground up and business was booming... word of mouth was very much what kept kayla successful and her many clients always felt safe with her around
kayla's client was holidaying in st kitts before she was back to filming, she was trying to relax but with fame came the need to escape and be herself...most people got it but a few exceptions were there hence the need for security to keep them away....
kayla and london were both not expecting the draw of attraction to happen to them whilst at st kitts and neither could explain to each the truth they were under and the misunderstanding abound....
what a fun read this one was.... such an easy flowing storyline that captured everything about st kitts to how the other half live ...is the grass greener on the other side.... this book hints at those answers but its the storyline between kayla and london that has you wondering about the what ifs....
you always know you are in for a good read with a georgia beers book and this book does not disappoint.
I loved London and Kayla as a couple and how they met and fell for each other. However, one kiss shared and then just a lot of misunderstandings so they do not get together until 95% of the book had passed and then that is just briefly described and then a very short epilogue two years later. I usually like a slow burn romance but this was way to slow and in the end almost a fade to black moment. A little more spice and a longer epilogue would have greatly improved the book.
I received a free ARC of this book from NetGalley.
I wish I had a cocktail in hand and my feet kicked up on a sun lounger, this would’ve been the perfect beach read! This book was laced with humour and romance which made it a truly enjoyable experience.
Quite often I feel authors overcomplicate narratives with unnecessary characters and subplots however Beer beautifully explored each character and everyone served a purpose for the story. I particularly enjoyed the development of Miranda’s character and the relationship she built with London. Whilst Miranda was set up to be unapproachable due to her billionaire status, London’s passion for her career forced her to see things in Miranda that very few did, paving the way for what turned out to be a beautiful friendship.
The chemistry Beer captured between London and Kayla was immediate and grew cleverly given very few plot interactions. The misunderstandings made me want to reach into the book itself and right the wrongs, I was fully invested in their love story!
Many themes were explored in this book and caused me to pause for thought; the grass really is always greener. Perhaps a deeper dive into some of these themes wouldn’t have gone amiss but that didn’t dampen my overall enjoyment of this book whatsoever.
Okay, WOW. Thank you NetGalley for sending me this copy and finding me a new author that I enjoy reading. This is why I love NetGalley, because I can explore different authors and find my favorites. Can't Buy Me Love was very enjoyable. Georgia Beers knows how to describe authors perfectly and it feels like you're watching this play out right in front of you. I definitely didn't expect the plot twist to happen. You would expect London to fall in love with Miranda, because that's how the story usually pans out. But I was shocked when the story line went with London falling for Kalya (which was Miranda's Ex-girlfriend) and head security for high end actresses/important people. I really liked how London was a former model, turn journalist/writer, who exposed the truths. Her article about how millionaires differentiate from ordinary people was very shocking but it was all truthful. I really enjoyed this author and I'm excited to read more books by her.
Bathing in borrowed luxury on a tropical island and finding that special one? If only you didn’t have to lie to her!
I received an advance copy from Netgalley for free and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
London Granger kissed her modeling career goodbye in favor of becoming a writer. Instead of writing meaningful articles about serious issues., she’s stuck with a boss that only lets her write fluff. This was not what she has been dreaming of, at all. When her best friend pitches an idea that is, for once, actually good, she decides to see if her boss will let her write it. What it’s really like to be a billionaire sees her teamed up with billionaire media mogul Miranda Northbrook. Miranda asks her to accompany her to the tropical island of St. Kitts. Who is London to say no? A week being ensconced in luxury all as research for her article? A billion times yes!
Kayla Tennyson has build her own security company from the ground up. She usually lets her team do the fieldwork, but when Hollywood IT-girl Aria Keller asks for her personally to accompany her for a week’s getaway on St. Kitts, Kayla is happy to oblige. While working to keep her client safe, Kayla notices the most beautiful woman she has ever seen. London Granger is everything she is looking for in a woman: beautiful, smart and funny. After a few impromptu meetings, Kayla is head over heels. That is until she runs into London with her travel companion, who is none other than Kayla’s ex Miranda Northwood. For all intents and purposes, they act like a couple. Kayla is horrified. How could she have been so wrong?
When you pick up a Georgia Beer’s book, you know it’s going to be a fun read. This one is no exception. I mean, a tropical island and all the luxury you can imagine? Come on! As much as that sounds like a fluffy setup, I really liked the premise of the story. London does enjoy the luxurious way of living that her main subject, Miranda, is used to, but she doesn’t close her eyes for the downside of it. She actually pays attention to the stark differences between a billionaire’s world and the experiences of ‘normal’ people, but also the actual isolation that Miranda’s lifestyle brings with it.
The connection between London and Kayla is unmistakable. They connect on a level that is somehow instantly deep, although their actual interactions are very short. I did feel like the hurdles they have to climb could have been more dramatic, but all in all, it’s a very satisfying journey.
I enjoyed the second main storyline of London and Miranda very much. The billionaire lifestyle is so very far from my own and I loved getting a glimpse into how the other side is living. Miranda is a great character because we get to see the person behind the veneer of success. The more she opens up to London, the more I liked her. And I loved that she supported London and Kayla as a couple, eventually.
London is researching the billionaire’s life for an article but mentions a book pretty soon. She also notes several times that she would like to interview the staff of the resort and Miranda’s assistent, but we never actually see her do that. I would have loved to read about their experiences.
Can’t Buy Me Love is a good summer read. Is it the best Georgia Beers story? No. Is it worth your time? Absolutely, yes!
London, a former model turned journalist, finds herself agreeing to accompany billionaire Miranda on a trip to St. Kitts to do a story on what it’s like to date someone like Miranda. While there she meets Kayla, who works in security protecting the stars. They strike up a connection, but neither of them know each other’s connection to Miranda, and along the way, things get complicated.
This was sooooo good! Everything about the story and the characters was exciting and I adored every minute. It had everything from the magical moments of instant attraction to the misunderstandings that cause all the drama that every great romance needs. I loved how the story also explored the points of view from both London’s and Kayla’s points of view, since they were both having very different experiences. Kayla was dedicated to her career and doing a good job, but when she let her hair down in her down time, she was chilled and just loving every moment of her life, which was quite different from London.
I got why London was a bit frustrated by her career so far, and I loved how strong willed she was, especially when she was explaining that she’d been a model and why she’d left the profession. She really wanted to make a difference in the world, and do important journalism, but what she was working on was also really exciting because when she really got to know Miranda, and her past with Kayla, and then Kayla’s side of things, she was definitely surprised by the assumptions she’d made, and I was too.
London and Kayla had one of those easy and dreamy connections. They just clicked and I loved them, knowing they really were meant to find one another. A great story, lots of humourous moments, some heartfelt ones, and lots of cute getting to know one another ones as well. I really, really enjoyed the story and will definitely be reading it again.
A confusing blurb had me mistakenly anticipate a possible relationship between Miranda and London, though it was quickly cleared out when the two mc met.
It was a sweet and slow pace romance where two mc met on vacation island during different assignments, their attraction with each other were immediate, conversations flowed easily, though I had a some issue with insta-love, I still thoroughly enjoyed it, it's a solid good book written by author.
Special thanks to netgalley and publisher for the arc.

First of all, I would like to thank Bold Strokes Books for giving me this free Arc and especially Netgalley. Thank you to these publishers for the opportunity to read this book for free and in advance. I would like to thank the author of this book for writing this story. I really appreciate your work, and I hope you create and write more stories!
The description of the book caught my interest, and I really loved mysteries and spies. Besides that, I also loved reading romance books. Well, this book is mixed of those, and that's why I picked it. This book is about London Granger, whose boss gave her an assignment about "what's it really like to be a billionaire" so her boss assigned her to St. Kitts to meet Miranda Northbrooke, a media mogul.
I liked the writing of this book, and it was nice. It keeps me reading, and the story is getting interesting. I like the plot of the book, which got me hooked up like it surprised me. This book also has a touch of humor, which made me giggle for some of the chapters. I recommend this book to anyone who likes to read adventure with a touch of romance. I will rate this book 4 stars.⭐⭐⭐⭐
Can’t Buy Me Love had a bit of angst, miscommunication, a lot of horny yearning…I found it tricky to get into. It was good to read a billionaire story that addressed classism, albeit in a watered-down way. I liked Kayla, and London was sweet too.
CANT BUY ME LOVE - GEORGIA BEERS - ARC London pitches her boss an idea for an article, hoping she will get a book out of it, her boss sets her up with the wealthy owner of the company Miranda! Miranda loves the idea London has pitched so takes her away to an expensive holiday resort! Kayla loves work, she's built her company from the ground up, she loves her clients too. Especially this one. This beautiful paradise is the best place for work until she bumps into her ex! I enjoyed this one, I don't expect some of the twists and I like the little stalker element in it, I really enjoyed seeing how the other side live, I guess it felt like I read London's novel! 🌶️ @rachaelmcreads
Nice simple romance. We get a glimpse into the resort living of people with lots of money but nothing more than what we expected. There is instant attractions, the usual misunderstanding and then the getting back together. Epilog is predictable. I'm sure I will be in the minority but it seems the last few Beers novel's have been light weight compared to previous novels, for example: Too close to touch; 96 hours and Fresh Tracks. I miss that author. I was given this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I wasn't too sure what to rate this book but I settled for around 4 stars read. It is a good cosy romance book with a bit of drama on the side. The characters are likeable which is always a plus (I found Kayla to be the most likeable - with a few side characters sticking my liking too!).
The concept of the story line is one I have not seen before. You get a lot of billionaire romances but you don't see ones with the character researching into their world - thus, I really enjoyed it! I did wish we got more insight into what London ended up writing in her book.
I really liked the twist of which character knew who and a bit of drama with the actresses fan. The ending scenes were quite romantic and I also really enjoyed how it all tied in together.
As someone who doesn't like a lot of descriptive paragraphs that are not really part of the action, I did struggle at times as there are loads of those in the book. It dragged out some scenes a bit and sometimes they felt like they were not that necessary. I also wished the chapter were shorter and not just divided between the characters in one chapter - then they could be character specific.
Nonetheless, I see how this read be everything other readers are looking for and would recommend if someone is looking for a quite quick summer holiday romance read.
Disclaimer: I received a free ARC of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
This is one of those books where the side characters and friendships really shined for me rather than the main plot. I did really like the chemistry between Kayla and London. Most of the time I don't favor the instant attraction/instant love angle, but something about them made it work. Their interactions were cute and the whole situation with Miranda created an impending sense of disaster that kept me reading. However, the relationships between Kayla and Aria, Miranda and London, Kayla and her mom, etc, appealed more to me. Particularly, I liked Miranda and London's relationship. At first Miranda isn't painted in the best light, but as London sees more to her than the stereotypical, so do we. I ended up rooting for their friendship a lot by the end of the novel. Overall, while not my favorite from Georgia Beers, "Can't Buy Me Love" is still a cute fun read. 4.1/5 stars.
I received an ARC from NetGalley and writing this review voluntarily.
The book is good.
There is some instant love that needs to be digested in the book. But, hey, it can happen with people sometimes. Not all the time but some time. The sizzling chemistry between the two MCs was amazing. The depth of both the characters can be explored further and it has the scope. But, the book has a different agenda. Also, I would loved the book equally more if London had met Kayla's mom. Kayla's mom seemed intriguing to me.
Although the book mentioned twists and small turns of Miranda's, the secondary but equally important character, love life it would be great to explore her choices more or can be left open for further exploration in the next book.
To much side plot, to little romance and when we did focus on the romance and the MC's, it felt to perfect and believable a happy ending that you kinda feel unfulfilled at the end of it.
I do like that it wasn't your typical body guard romance. It won points there. But at the end of it. The MC's should be the main focus in their own book and yeah.... that kinda was a miss for me. Sadly. Not bad but... could have been so much better.
**minor spoilers ahead, but not really anything the blurb doesn’t already spoil**
First off, for the entirety of the book, the two main characters barely interact at all. There’s way too much focus on the side-plot and hardly any focus on the actual romance. I’m fairly certain that London and Kayla quite literally spend more time thinking/fantasizing about each other than they do actually interacting with each other in the entire book. Honestly, the book probably spent more time talking about how pretty the sunrises/sunsets were on the beach than on giving us actual interactions between the two main characters. Felt super insta-lovey which I’m not into. The book even is self-aware of this. At like the 80% mark, the book admits that the two main love interests had maybe spent a total of 2 hours interacting with each other up until that point. Maybe that’s your thing, but it isn’t mine. I want some substance to root for or I can’t get invested.
Along with that, the conflict—both the reason for why “they couldn’t be together” in London’s mind and the the reason behind why London didn’t clear up the major misunderstanding that took place—was built on such a weak foundation that it was just frustrating. Sorry to sound rude, but it was probably one of the dumbest lines of reasoning I’ve ever heard, which is sad considering that London is supposed to be an intelligent character. Don’t even get me started on her second line of reasoning being “well I’ve been shady because I never cleared up the misunderstanding in the first place so why should I clear it up now? Maybe it’s a sign that it’s not meant to be.” Just stop, genuinely. That’s the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard. Glad she got called out on that part specifically, but still. Killed brain cells reading that. Literally like 20% of the book was characters telling London to stop being stupid and tell Kayla the truth and London just ignoring their advice and then wallowing in yearning and self-pity. Sorry, but I found London’s character to be painfully foolish and unlikeable. I had high hopes for her originally too. Major disappointment.
Also—I’m sorry again—but I have to say it. For a professional bodyguard, Kayla probably put up the weakest fight I’ve ever read in my life. One punch and the girl is down for the count lol
Anyways, with all of that in mind, the slow burn didn’t hold any tension for me—just mega frustration. The plot felt weak, the character motivations were flimsy, there was no romance to be found in this “romance novel,” and frankly, I was unmotivated to finish the book and didn’t feel even the slightest bit satisfied when I did because of my inability to feel invested in whether the romance would work out or not.
To throw in one final point, I felt that the way that classism and the “what it’s like to be a billionaire” aspect of the story was written fell on the shallow-end. Kind of like it wanted to be making a point, but never actually said anything of substance.
Pros: - Premise had potential - A handful of fun and flirty scenes (handful is a generous word) - The romance is fairly intriguing before all the miscommunication happens - Gay
Cons: - Insta-lovey - Miscommunication trope (ewwwww) - London needs to grow a brain and backbone STAT - The lead up to the conflict resolution was way too dragged out - Centered around a topic (classism) that could have been very thought-provoking, but it—instead—felt shallow and a little jarring when it was brought up (these poor, hard-working billionaires are just sooo lonely. And Miranda and London are friends now!!! Let’s make sure we mention that last part like 10x in case readers forgot.)
Sorry this came across as more of a rant than anything else, but I’ve been disappointed by this author lately and that’s genuinely a major shame. I have been a loyal reader for a long time and really don’t want to give up on her.
I love Georgia Beers books she always captivates me with her characters and makes me enter their world so easily that many times I end up angry with one of them in particular , I can’t help it. But I promise you that in this book you are not going to get angry with anyone, in fact I feel that it lacks a little bit of angst, just a pinch. . I know how important representation is and I like that there are characters of different ages, but everything was so smooth. I wanted a little conflict, for the characters to fight for their happiness. . Regardlees, I really enjoyed the book and it made me think a lot about an Andy Anderson on how to lose a man...but sapphic version . London left the world of modeling and began a career in journalism with the dream of writing serious content about socioeconomic realities, but her editor only offered her vain articles about dating or lifestyle. . That's why when it occurs to her to change one of her articles and her editor manages to get her to follow one of the most relevant businesswomen to a luxurious island for a week, she thinks that nothing can go wrong. . But on an island full of millionaires and jet-setters, unforeseen events can always arise, which is why they both agree to keep the secret that she is a journalist and say that she is her companion. London can't risk this opportunity for anything or anyone, not even the beautiful woman she just met. . Kayla Tennison is not only the bodyguard of the star of the moment who is on a secret vacation, she is also the owner of the company and knows very well what the world of the richest is like, which is why she tries to stay as far away as she can, but London is nothing like she seems, especially when she discovers that she is her ex's companion, the most frivolous and dramatic woman she ever met in her life . I really enjoyed the book and the beautiful scenes that Georgia painted in my head while I was reading it. It is one of those books that allow you to travel to dreamy places and perfect dates while you’re comfortable reading in your cozy spot. . Thanks to Georgia Beers and Bold Stroke books for give me a copy of this beautiful book in exchange of my honest and voluntary opinion
I think readers who like insta-love would have a better time reading this book. I didn’t find the relationship between London and Kayla believable, since they developed such strong feelings for each other after relatively few interactions.
The main obstacle to their relationship is the fact that Kayla believes London is dating Miranda (Kayla’s ex). London is a journalist, and she is actually traveling with Miranda to research a story she is working on. London doesn’t correct Kayla’s incorrect belief and her rationale for that decision didn’t seem satisfying to me. The main conflict in the story is also revealed on the back cover of the book, so it felt predictable when it finally happened.
I also didn’t find Miranda’s character interesting. London is spending time with Miranda in order to write an article about what it’s like to be a billionaire. I wasn’t curious about learning more about Miranda’s life or the difficulties associated with being a billionaire. It also felt like the narrative never resolved the tension between London wanting to write an article criticizing wealth inequality, but also wanting to become Miranda’s friend and write an article that showed her in a positive light. Readers more willing to suspend their disbelief around the premise of the article might not have as much of a problem with that aspect of the story.
Finally, I wished the book had contained a trigger warning. There is a subplot involving a side character
Thank you to NetGalley for an ARC of this book!
Highlights: - bodyguard romance - set on an island resort - insta-love - falling for your ex’s fake girlfriend - secret identities
I want to start by saying thank you to Georgia Beers and Bold Strokes Books for the ARC copy of Can't Buy Me Love. I deeply appreciate it.
Can't Buy Me Love is a fun, light, summery read about money, fame, miscommunication, and complicated love. London Granger, on assignment, gets to live the high life with billionaire Miranda Northbrooke, who she quickly finds friendship with. While at their St. Kitts resort for the week, she runs into Kayla Tennyson, the strong, confident, and thoughtful owner of Tennyson Security, and it doesn't take long for a spark to form between them. Little does London know, Kayla is actually the ex-girlfriend of her billionaire companion - one of many complications on their path.
Beers wrote an enjoyable beach read here. Candidly, though, it was not my cup of tea. I'm sure many will enjoy this playful romp, but I did struggle as the book progressed with a lack of substance. There were a few words and phrases that I could tell were author favorites, and it was hard not to notice the repetition. I also found the brief mentionings of wealth disparity without any real substance to be more offputting than insightful, as though they were thrown in to show the main character in a better light with no other purpose.
Readers who seek escapism, easy reads, and a little bit of tension to kick it up a notch will probably have a good time. There were a few scenes that had me glued in, and I enjoyed learning about Miranda more than I expected to. I wish it was more my cup of tea as I loved the concept, but preferences are there for a reason.
Kudos for the beautiful cover that catches the eye. London Granger, is a former model and now journalist for a magazine. She pitches an idea to her boss about dating a billionaire and he connects her with the magazine owner and owner of a media empire, Miranda Northbrooke. I thought this was going to be a romance between the pair when Miranda invites London to St. Kitts as a companion. And a good part of the story is spent on them becoming friends. But the attraction and sparks are for another guest on St. Kitts, Kayla Tennyson. Kayla runs her own personal security firm and is on the island providing security for Aria, a rising actress who is on holiday.
The romance moves slowly. Kayla and London meet in a bar and visit over drinks. They manage a workout together. But both are essentially in paradise working. I enjoyed Kayla and London. Yes, I would have liked a bit more flirting or time together. But I did like how well developed they and the side characters were in this story. Miranda is carefully crafted and gets her own side romance. Aria could be the feature of another story if Beer’s wants to write a celebrity romance.
I am a fan of the author’s and am glad that this book is easy to recommend. Beer’s books are ones I often find myself reading again because of how easily they invite me in to the plot. Her characters feel like friends and I enjoy my time spent with them. Thank you to NetGalley and Bold Strokes Books for the ARC and I am leaving an honest review.
Georgia Beers latest, Can’t Buy Me Love, is a well-crafted story with an engaging, fun narrative. This contemporary romance contains alluring leads that readers are sure to enjoy. However, while London and Kayla are solid, likable leading characters, it is Miranda Northbrooke, London’s boss, that really grabs one’s attention. Her “Miranda Priestly” overtones add rich, dynamic layers of complexity and tension. She jumps off the page every time she enters a scene, making the storytelling so much more engaging. She’s the perfect secondary character and I could not get enough of her!
Miranda is what I would call an ice queen with a soft center. The stark contrast between her cool exterior and her warm, vulnerable interior creates a compelling character dynamic. This duality makes her character more complex and interesting. Watching her gradually reveal her softer side to London provides not only a satisfying story arc but impactful storytelling as well. Those moments when Miranda’s true feelings break through her icy facade are potent and affecting for London; it all works to build a powerful and heartfelt connection with the reading audience.
As wonderful a character as Miranda is, she would not have much purpose without the leading ladies’ romance. Beers does a fine job scripting their journey to HEA, too. London and Kayla’s narrative offers a rich blend of themes, character dynamics and conflicts to captivate readers. By weaving together intriguing subplots, light-hearted humor and resonating emotional moments, Beers gives readers something to chew on. This is more than just a romance; it explores deeper issues: identity, trust, friendship and true connection. Ultimately, these characters’ journeys serve as a reminder that love, when rooted in honesty and understanding, can emerge even in the most complex of circumstances.
Final thoughts…
Friendships play vital role in this lovely narrative about falling in love while least expecting it. They not only provide a gateway for London and Kayla’s romance, but comic relief and introspection as well. Most importantly though, they help the storytelling truly resonate with readers. Through the significant and important friendships London and Kayla have in their lives, Beers shows the importance of true connection and how it can be a guiding light to true love. This well-crafted approach ensures that readers will not only be entertained but also inspired by the power of genuine, transformative love and connection, especially in a world that values distractions and showy facades. Ultimately, Can’t Buy Me Love underscores why Beers fans don’t hesitate to lay their money down for one of her novels.
Strengths…
Wonderful supporting characters Intriguing subplots Nice exploration of friendship Engaging romance Nice potential for sequel
London Granger is an ex-model turned investigative journalist. She’s smart, capable and funny, but it is the sexy and seductive part which inevitably leads to her being underestimated and overlooked. She’s a wonderful character to follow, and I was thrilled she was the main character in Georgia Beers’ latest work, Can’t Buy Me Love.
Trying to get herself noticed for more than fluff pieces, London accepts an assignment to examine ‘What it’s really like to be a billionaire.’ It helps that the billionaire in question is the good looking, smart and capable Kayla Tennyson, who isn’t the morally bankrupt sociopath she could have been. Instead, Kayla is fundamentally decent, even if she’s tough in business and a player between the sheets.
I thoroughly enjoyed the set up, which gave Beers lots of opportunities to skip around with gorgeous people in great locations and give readers a holiday away from home. It also offered room for miscommunication, misconceptions, and adventures, which was really fun to read. Like most romances, I knew where this was going but the journey was a delight with some lovely surprises along the way. London is a fabulous character, and I laughed out loud several times. She’s a treat!
Tennyson Securities got the call when media star Aria Keller with a couple of her friends to vacation with her while visiting St. Kitts. The hotel they’d be staying in had good security but with the press always after her it was decided to hire Kayla Tennyson to keep her safe. This was a world where Kayla was used to being around seeing that most of her clients were famous for one reason or another. The closest Kayla came was when she dated one of her clients, Miranda Northbrooke. It didn’t end well. London Granger found herself on St. Kitts, working on a story about what it would be like to live like the super rich. To get there she was traveling as a companion with Miranda Northbrooke (Kayla’s Ex.). She is having fun but she didn’t seem to have enough time to pursue the beautiful security guard. Said guard was just as interested in London. Ms Beers can and routinely does write books that I and other fans eagerly wait for the publishers to put out there for many romance readers. Very, very enjoyable read. ARC via NetGalley/Bold Stroke Books
