A castle full of demon hunters, and guess what I'm hiding in my room?
Life as a blacksmith’s son was simple. Hammer steel, make deliveries, and court the cute baker down the street. My respectable future lay before me.
Then, I was attacked by a giant monster. I had to fight for my life, and I won.
Something awakened in me that day, something kept hidden by my father. It gave me strength, speed, and other secret powers. Before he could explain, a fist pounded on the door. It was the Knights of Elsara! Or, as the common folk called them, slayers.
A new path lay before me—a treacherous journey leading to my city's salvation, the truth about my parents, and, most importantly, a nice uniform.
I just had to walk the straight and narrow, earning my sword and wristbow along the way. That shot out the window when, during some mischief in the library with a very pretty elf, we accidentally summoned a demon!
The kind I’m supposed to be hunting…
I'll leap across city walls killing hobgoblins, train my blade under the watchful eye of a noblewoman, and try to prevent an adorable demon from stealing my soul. Oddly, she doesn't seem to want it. She just reads books and asks me how my day went.
There’s a lot of false five star buzz word reviews on kindle and this book has a lot of them. This book if full of someone trying to be “super deep and introspective man”, but the vast majority of it is either gibberish or very shallow. A lot of the action is poorly described Attack on Titan fights. Also, while the book is trying to have this gritty setting the world has cartoon physics and there’s very little stakes. Which some books can do once the world is built up to it, but without that buildup none of the feels genuine.
This book has been a wonderful read from start to finish and I truly believe it's one of the best in the genre. Now I'll try to say a few words without spoilers because the plot and the events are quite important. Eric is a very interesting character thrust into a new life situation while still not knowing everything about his past. Here he meets Silfie, one of the most unique characters I have ever read about, she is an absolute breath of fresh air. The way their relationship evolves is adorable and I wish only the best for them as the series moves on (and also for them to get a room already). Then we have Dalphae, who is is brought forward by one of Eric's and Silfie's adventures, she is also a conundrum of emotions, torn between what she is and what she wants to become. We get a very good progression over there as well with something very interesting happening at the end. We also get a kind of mentor character for Eric and Sifie in the person of Lady Melrose, who is still quite mysterious and kinda batshit crazy, and whom I suspect will play a more important role in the future. We also have a wonderful pair of knights, in the person of Sir Godfrey and Dame Evie, a group of side characters that interact a bit with our main characters. The world setting could get a bit more expansion, there are a lot of details about it that seem confusing, or better said not expanded upon. The story is way more character focused, rather than plot or world quest. Overall a great tale, which I hope to see more soon, I really need to see the characters grow and their relationship evolve, as well as getting some answers for what happened at the end of the first book. I absolutely loved it, and I hope it will become a very long and fulfilling series.
To start off with the book is a good read and certainly an enjoyable one that will have you wanting to get through as fast as possible to find out what happens next and couple that we the fantastic descriptions of everything and every character it genuinely feels like you're truly immersed in the world Kirk Mason is building. Unfortunately that's about all I have to say that's positive about the book.
This just like Mason's other series suffers from the same issue. It reads like you're looking into the mind of a scatterbrained person with heavy ADHD. Besides the characters being well grounded and having back stories and lives that leave you genuinely interest in them, the story feels like you're driving a car at 200 MPH and dodging out of the way of other vehicles by a hair.
Though the dialogue is much better and heavily improved from his other works. It still doesn't feel extremely coherent. At first glance it seems to have a solid build for a story and you have an idea of what the overarching plot is going to be that being getting promoted to slayer knight, find out what the MC'S heritage is, and figure the MC'S relationship out with his half elf companion. Unfortunately that's all you're left with as what feels like should be the main plot but reads like it isn't (that being find out who's turning people into Hydebeasts and why as well as stop them). Ends up being relegated to sub-plot at best the second we are introduced to our 4th MC the pink demon.
All in all the story while reading it will get you hooked and you'll be chomping at the bit for more but by the end your left a bit unsatisfied at how not a whole lot was accomplished but placated by the admittedly fantastic smut scenes and rather funny mannerisms of the characters.
How does he keep getting away with it? ANOTHER new series with fantastic characters and writing? Unfathomable. Yet here we are.
Our main character, Eric might be one of the more down to earth and realistic MCs in the genre and he's also really funny. Silfia might just be one of my favorite girls after only one book. I honestly can't think of another character out there in the genre to compare her too. Dalphae is also really cute and Melrose is definitely interesting. Sir Godfrey and Dame Evie are great side characters and I hope we continue to get more of them in the future.
Anyways. This one is a bit off the normal slice of life stuff I've come to know Kirk Mason for, but the comedy and slower moments are still there and very strong.
I have had a few demon roommates but none were like her
The slayer academy is nothing like other schools. Led by a strange and crazy headmistress and populated by a weird collection of classmates the academy is a bastion for protecting humanity. Eric is a humble blacksmith caught up in this crazy world. The mc and the women are interesting and well written. The banter is interesting and the whole situation is grand. Mysterious things are afoot in the city and the mc and friends think the headmistress might be caught up in it.
Meh, 2.5 stars. Honestly, this is confusing, and not in a good way. MC is uneven, to say the least, and too much of the word count is taken up with sex, things sex-adjacent and stuff that doen't seem to add to the story.
I'm reading book 2 to see if it gets better, and so far it's a bit better, but you likely have better things to read than this. If not, it's not the worst thing I've read this year, but likely the weakest thing that I've actually finished.
It's a little hard to get into, but it's well worth it. The usual tropes are there, but they are twisted 90 degrees. And there is a lot of mystery, of things that happen, but aren't explained. That alone will draw me to the next book. A good read, especially for cold rainy days.
Not much to say. Very forgettable. Boring plot. Slow... The main character is boring and the plot hardly moves along. Nothing to read that has not been recycled before. Feels like filler and lame attempts to push an AI story quality level nonsense.
I like the start and the unusual setting of this world - thanks for that. After the library incident (not more info to avoid spoilers) i have a lot of facepalm moments - there is no way that goes undetected. But overall it is good entertaining and the refreshing setting sets it up a point over average.
Imagine a high school drama group tries to make a play about magic and demon hunters. They use fantasy-like language and have no clue what they are doing...
I got half way through, then said nope, I am done.
Lots of humor mixed into an interesting and unique fantasy adventure! It was entertaining in an enthralling manner the old guttural style English used in this series and I really look forward to seeing where this series goes!!!!
Started good, but ruined it with high school level bullshit. Just didn't like this one at all. Especially with a good deal of the spice being in the MCs head. Got to the bit about one of the females licking the toes of another female and just about vomited.
