John Lindley Byrne is a British-born Canadian-American author and artist of comic books. Since the mid-1970s, Byrne has worked on nearly every major American superhero.

Byrne's better-known work has been on Marvel Comics' X-Men and Fantastic Four and the 1986 relaunch of DC Comics’ Superman franchise. Coming into the comics profession exclusively as a penciler, Byrne began co-plotting the X-Men comics during his tenure on them, and launched his writing career in earnest with Fantastic Four (where he also started inking his own pencils). During the 1990s he produced a number of creator-owned works, including Next Men and Danger Unlimited. He also wrote the first issues of Mike Mignola's Hellboy series and produced a number of Star Trek comics for IDW Publishing.

So apparently John Byrne took over writing duties for Advs of Superman while he was also writing and drawing not only Action Comics but the Superman solo title. This was his first issue on Adventures.

This issue continues the Millennium event. Supes is chasing after Lana who revealed that she is a Manhunter. And so are several other people in Smallville.

Are you kidding me?! The absolute gall of this issue is so laughable. I’m so glad Byrne is on adventures of Superman as well, but omg why did it have to start with a storyline that is so laughably insane that it seems like it’s making fun of Millenium. I am legit in disbelief at what happens in this issue, and in a way that makes me laugh and love it…while at the same time hating everything it does. No way in hell is this canon, but it’s still hilarious.

As we left Clark off at the start of Millenium on the Superman series, Lana had just revealed herself to be a manhunter, tried to reveal Clark as Superman, then flew off back to smallville when she failed. But once Clark reached Smallville himself, there was no sign of her anywhere. He decided to pull out a change of clothes from his cape pocket (what happened to cape pockets? We need those back!!) and walk into town to scope things out. But town seems very odd. Eventually Clark runs into his friend Pete Ross and heads into his business to have a chat with him. The entire time he can tell something is wrong. He can hear Pete’s heart beating faster, he can smell Lana’s perfume in the building like she has been there even though Pete said she hasn’t seen her, and there is a crowd gathering outside the building. Suddenly an older gentleman walks in. He’s the town doctor and even fixed Clark’s broken arm when he was young, before the invulnerability, and has delivered almost every child in smallville. But right as Clark turns to talk to him…Pete pulls out a manhunter issue blaster and stuns Clark. Blasting him into the street where the gathered crowds proceeded to pick him up and carry him to their hideout.

When Clark woke up he found himself surrounded by the townsfolk, all with manhunter uniforms on and all lead by the doctor. He also found himself trapped in a resilient piece of tech that also inhibits his physical strength. The doctor then proceeded to explain how they got there and what was happening as a show to Clark to stop fighting against their might. Now this is where things really get insane. It turns out that the manhunters have been secretly including themselves on every civilized planet…including krypton. They also watched as the planet died and watched Jor-el as he sent his son to Earth to save him. It also turns out that the manhunters tried to intercept Clark’s Kryptonian ship before he reached earth as they knew what would happen if he interacted with Earth’s sun. BUT, it turns out that the guardians sent a group of green lanterns to stop the manhunters. YEP! You heard it here first!! The manhunters and the green lanterns fought over Clark’s shuttle when he was only a baby. That’s an elseworlds story I would be interested to hear. What if the manhunters won? Technically the manhunters did win that fight, but the lanterns stalled them enough so that Ma and Pa Kent could find Clark first. In an attempt to delay people from finding Clark they tried to use an “atmospheric inducer” to create a blizzard in the area. But this has the adverse effect of leaving the Kent’s cooped up with Clark and growing attached to him. Hahahaha.

Eventually the manhunters decided on an alternative plan, and sent two agents to kill and replace the town doctor and his wife. Then for 30 years they cared for the people of smallville while implanting their newborns with control devices for the possibility of the day they need to fight against Clark. Those insane manhunters even programmed the doctor’s wife to die so he would look like a kind old widower. But that moment has come and now their plan is successful!! Hahahaha, that is wildly insane. Do they do this every time there is a possible powerful being or just for Clark?!

As the manhunters leave to continue their other business, Clark comes to a realization…the inhibitor is only effecting his physical strength. His other power sources are fine. Unfortunately his bonds are too strong for laser vision, but he can use xray vision to look around and get his bearings. And that’s when he realized that this may not be an underground facility, but some form of ship. A ship that also has all of the elders of the town, including his parents, trapped in stasis. With that extra bit of motivation Clark is very interested in getting out of here. If this is a ship then it may be able to move, and he still has one power not affected by physical limitations…flight. Using the power of his flight he is able to start moving the entire ship while staying bound!! Which is such an insane move. With all the manhunters fought off guard and thrown around, he is finally able to damage his restrains enough to break free. But right as he reaches the master manhunter, the doctor, he activated his own self destruct rather than be taken alive by Clark. But this issue ends on quite a mystery. Does this free the other of his control, or does Clark have an entirely new issue on his hands?!

Clark is restrained upside down and has no super strength. But he still has flight.

The five is for Supes lifting the ship up with his mind. Totally unexpected way out of his restraints.
