I sat on this review for a few days to process what I listened to, so please know that I didn't go into this review without thinking it over.
Let me start by saying that I have read every book from Beneath this Mask (Beneath Series #1) to Madam Temptress (Magnolia Duet #2) of MM on my Kindle. I got my husband hooked on her and we have listened to every one of those books together. I have the books in print as well. So, I can say that I have a vested interest in Meghan March's books. I right along with everyone else who follows her on social media was heartbroken she said that she wouldn't write romance again, but that is her choice - she is the writer, and these are her characters that she gives a voice.
When she posted that they were back in New Orleans, I patiently, not so patiently waited to get my hands on this book. It finally came on my Kindle and I resisted until it came out on Audible. Then I made plans for a road trip so that my husband could listen as well. I will get into it now...(STOP here if you don't want spoilers)
Had I been reading this book alone, I would have closed it and moved to another. When Meghan said that she wasn't going to write a romance again, she didn't lie at all. This book was the equivalent of Alanis Morissette's album after she found love and left behind "Jagged Little Pill"
Lachlan Mount, she did him dirty. This man cried for 3/4 of the book at least. This is not the Mount/Boogeymen that made us fall in love with a morally grey character. This man was a stranger. If I ever read the words, "mother" (mentioned 232 times), "I have a family" (mentioned 12 times, but really...he has a family already in Kiera and Aurora) in a book again, it will be way too soon. He was not Mount at all. NOT AT ALL.
Kiera, was her feisty self for just a little bit, just a tad. Then it was almost as if she was sedated the rest of the book.
Aurora, this kid slept quite a lot.
Marco, I had no trust in him at all. I kept waiting for the other shoe to drop and then the book would take off and it would be a full-fledged Lachlan Mount book. Sadly, that didn't happen. Marco as a character was flat.
The parents, don't get me started at all. They lived apart for 40 years but never divorced. Lachlan/Luca comes home and all of a sudden they can be together again?
My burning question is now that they are going to start over in a new country...are they going to tell Kiera's family that she is not dead? What about 7 Sinners? Is he just walking away from it all if his enemies are dead and the threat is eliminated? What about Leo...does he get out? I know that man has a story to tell. I am still sad that V died in Magnolia's book, I was looking forward to reading about the loveable, broody man.
Did it bother me that this book had no sexy times? No, not at all. I would just like to have had them not cry so much.
Will I pick up another MM book? Yes but if it goes the direction of this one...I will put it down or might return it (gasp)
These are just my opinions. I think that if you ignored my spoiler alert above, you need to read this book to come to your own conclusions, don't take the word of others. To each their own.
