Exit Prohibited: A Memoir

Rate this book
After the 1979 Iranian Revolution, Ellen Estilai and her family attempt to leave Tehran, their home of nine years. At the airport, her Iranian husband is inexplicably prevented from leaving. As he confronts hostile colleagues and the Islamic Republic's opaque bureaucracy, Ellen examines their lives, trying to understand what might have brought them to this point. Exit Prohibited is a story of a complex Iran, at once welcoming and hostile, progressive and traditional, enamored of and distrustful of the West-an Iran as complex as Estilai's relationship to it.

A woman that embraced her husband culture

I was a young wife, mom in Teheran in wwe19Ve74, as a western last the only time I covered my hair was I went to the Bazaar in South Teheran, if not boys would throw stones and older ones tied to touch you.Beside this Teheran was a city where women had freedom, the oldest religions, Armenian,Russian I had many friends, , we left a year before the Shah, left everything behind except our dog, fearful at the airport that would not allow us to have ,my husband two children.
Brought memories of so many friends, some executed
A read for who lived in Iran.
