Caroline Miller, teacher, lobbyist, labor leader, politician, artist, and author shares a candid account of her youth. The ink being barely dry on her college diploma from Reed College in Portland, Oregon, she follows her fiancé to England. Two years later, after struggling to adapt to life in a new country, the man she adores breaks her heart. Rudderless, she joins a friend headed to teach in Africa. The 1960s is an era when white colonial empires are struggling to maintain their grip on indigenous populations. By the time she arrives in East Africa, UHURU, the cry for freedom, ignites the land. Her coming-of-age story mirrors the struggle of new nations-a saga of surprise, suffering, and joy, markers along a road that began with heartbreak and lead to the discovery of human connection.

Very enjoyable trip for me through a couple places I've been and really like (Oregon and England) and one wild place I'd like to see. Very well written and gave me some real glimpses into life and locations that were lived and traveled by the author!
Getting Lost To Find Home touched me deeply and will stay with me for a long time. A vivid, insightful, and colorful confirmation that life isn't about the destination, it's about the journey, and the wisdom gained along the way. Highly recommended!
Caroline Miller has written beautifully about a few short years when she was young and foolish, making questionable decisions that seemed reasonable at the time. Following her "fiancé" to England, struggling to teach in an unfamiliar system, slowly realizing that her dream of marriage and children was not going to happen, at least not with him. Taking a teaching job in Uganda on little more than a whim, and traveling throughout central Africa on her breaks, her descriptions of her environment are vivid and specific, and the people she meets are described in ways that made them come alive in my imagination. A satisfying read.
