I work in the museum and edutainment sector, and this book is an engaging means of learning for children. It is full of beautiful illustrations, with a fun, colourful and vintage-but-modern aesthetic. The gorgeous artwork and beautiful cover bring the book to life!
Travel is fun, going around the world is fun, well at least I think it is, I have mostly done the latter with books. It’s fun and it’s fascinating so now imagine that not only are you going to take a trip around the world but that the trip is going to include inventions! Yes, you did read that correctly for this is Matt Ralph’s Around the World in 80 Inventions. This is a book packed with information, ideal for the young inventor in your world and perfect for young people with an interest in STEM. To add to its attractiveness, as if fascinating inventions and their history wasn’t enough, there are amazing cartoon style illustrations from Robbie Cathro throughout. The whole book is a testament to the imagination, not just of its author and illustrator but also to the people who can be credited with these 80 inventions. And please note, that does not mean there are simply 80 people. Another important facet of this book is its celebration of teamwork. Inventions may have changed the world but so did the people who dreamt them up!
When you think of the Stone Age I wonder what comes to mind. Probably the woolly mammoth. What about inventions? Yes, in the stone age there were some ‘ingenious early implements’ created, and we can explore the tools and the painters kit before we move on to the ballpoint pen. Yes, believe it or not that is an invention, created in 1888. Traffic signals are another. In London Stop and Go signs were in use throughout the 1800s but by 1923 there were three instructions in use in the UK, the US and Canada… Humans may have used fire for at least 800,000 years but it wasn’t until 1826 that the match was created! Tin cans were designed, partly to allow sailors to be able to take food with them that would last for longer and allow them to create tasty meals. I could honestly keep going, this book is so fascinating, but I think it is time now to leave you to explore and marvel over the 80 inventions from around the world.
