Crack Fantasy Adventure #3

I Went on an Adventure and All I Got Was This Barbarian Orc

Rate this book
Lawton:

I expected challenges along the way in this adventure, but I didn’t expect to come face to corpse with the work of another necromancer. It pains me, but I can’t let just anyone carry on creating potential wights and contagious zombies. Fortunately, I know exactly how to fix the problem, even if it drains me dry. Thankfully, I have a Berklak to help me recover.

Berklak:

Mead—that’s all I need. At least that’s what I think, until my little necromancer reaches for a weapon that could kill him, and I realize that I might need a little bit more in life than the drink of orcs. It’s a good thing Lawton’s ok with me setting boundaries, because I need him to be safe, whole, and energetic, even if I have to give him everything I am to make that happen.

I Went on an Adventure and All I Got Was This Barbarian Orc is a five chapter serial fantasy adventure with a light-hearted, fun TTRPG vibe. Expect big magic, lots of cuddles, plenty of steam, and a team of characters that might not get a natural 20 on every roll, but they make up for it with creative solutions to both magical and mundane problems.

Jennifer Cody lives in Small Midwestern Town, USA, aka the sticks of Kansas. She has three kids and a Beardo she loves. Her sleep schedule is weird, so messages sent at midnight usually get answered relatively promptly. She reads all kinds of mm romance and urban fantasy, but her favorites are gay-for-you, small-town romances and over the top urban fantasy romances. Her own writing doesn’t always reflect her reading preferences, but mostly it does. She writes what she wants to read and reads extensively because she’s an addict. To books, obviously. And caffeine because sleep is for other people.

I think this is where I throw the towel in on this one. The characters are there, but it feels like nothing is happening, and the humor has become non existent in this one. It's become a typical rpg adventure and I struggled to get into the story. It's a shame but this is where I stop.

I think it worked. I think I’m ready to go back to Aelin now. I just know that Rowan is getting her court ready and that Chaol is going to be a pussy and Manon is going to figure things out and the other two are going to suffer. I just know it

Lawton and Berklak continue to be cute together and the found family vibes increase and improve.

Spice: 2/5

Triggers: zombies, violence, gore, marital issues of side characters, references to abusive and emotionally unavailable family member, death

Berklak and Law are relationship goals!!! I couldn’t love this series any more if I wanted to. Jennifer always know the best balance of humor and plot.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again - Jennifer Cody is insanely talented at world building. Beyond.

I also just found out she writes as Cinnamon Sin and I desperately need her to finish the Primal Prey serial too 🙏🏻

So fun! Very OTT at times but I’m here for it. It is definitely crack fantasy as advertised! I don’t usually like serialized stories but these are just long enough to get a story in each “chapter” rather than a series of cliffhangers.

wonderfully written and entertaining story

Rating: 5🌈

Necromancer Prince Lawton, his lover, the half Orc barbarian and founding member of the League of Extraordinary Rage, Berklak, and their merry crew of mismatched otherworldly beings are off on an adventure, I’m mean, mission to find out what’s plaguing the Kingdom of Fasgard. Turns out, it’s quite a lot.

So many mysteries , bodies, zombies, and magic gone awry.

Cody’s having a blast rolling the dice in a serialized story that’s , in the author’s words, playing out in a “lighthearted, fun TTRPG vibe”. For those who don’t know what this is, it’s a tabletop role-playing game. You grab paper, pencil or pens, and game is on with a bunch of people in various roles. Dungeon & Dragons being the hallmark here.

This has all the feels and more. I love the characters and, especially in this chapter, we get more growth and history along with the “event a minute “ storyline. Dwarves and every aspect that even has a side dwarven element is just amazing. From the dwarven mead to their ability to accept any other being as a dwarf if they have grown up in a dwarven environment is incredible. We absolutely believe in these dwarves, yes, we do.

Armus and Inghram’s relationship is looking intriguing, Darian, Frost (the Unbearded, which I’m still giggling about) and Tavia, all the crew members are developing further. So is the sexy bond between Lawton and Berklak.

Cody’s expanding the boundaries of the darkness plaguing the Kingdom while giving us and the intrepid crew very little answers. Hopefully more will come soon in the next chapter.

Until then, enjoy these short wonderfully entertaining stories for the format as well as the spontaneity that it narratively captures so well!

How does this keep getting better each chapter?!?!

I went into this series fully expecting to fall in love with Lawton and Berklak and k thought there was going to be a good chance of loving the secondary characters too. However, the reality is I am now in love with ALL of them. I want their individual stories and their HEAs, I want every one of these amazing people to have their own story. I accept I may not get that (which kinda makes me want to cry lol) but that’s how much I love these characters. I’m loving the way told building too. There’s so much too all the various cultures in this world. But even better is that the cultures are nuanced in the way cultures in the real world are. Their tricky and sometimes nonsensical and frustrating but that’s what makes them super interesting. I really enjoyed getting to see dwarves how dwarves mines operate (or don’t as the case may be) and I am super looking forward to meeting more of Frost’s family. So much good stuff is happening and the plot continues to thicken in respect of the murky dark magic that’s infected everything. I’m really looking forward to the next chapter but I also kind of dread getting closer to the end. I’m really hoping this becomes a larger series with maybe more books focussing in some of our wonderful people like Armus, Inghram and Darian (I obviously include Frost and Tavia but I want the others to find their version of a HEA first).

This third installment of the Crack Fantasy serial picks up where the last left off and continues the adventure. Each installment makes me love that characters more and more. They seem like the perfect adventuring party because they all have strengths and weakness and the weakness aren't looked at as bad things. They might be unfortunate but they aren't bad in and of themselves. Their sense of comraderie is amazing and it feels like an almost instant found family.

In this installment the adventurers venture further into the mines and face challenges darker then in the previous books. While this is a bit darker than chapters 1 & 2 there is still plenty of lightness and humor... not to mention the steamy parts.

Jennifer is a favorite author that I follow closly because her books are extremely well written and so full of humor and heart with some incredible plots and characters. I know if I read her books I will be highly entertained and will love almost all the characters and world built to the point I never want them to end.

I am loving this Crack Fantasy Adventure series that Jennifer Cody is releasing in novella-size chapters.

Chapter 3 was once again such a fun read. I always enjoy getting pulled into a Jennifer Cody universe and this one is no different. I enjoyed catching up with all the characters, especially Berklak and Lawton and getting to know this band of misfits a little more, who are already forming a found family group, which is really cool. I can't wait to see where this adventure takes them in the next installment and see them save Fasgard from whatever evil it a causing all the chaos and murdering.

This time they have to deal with a rogue necromancer, spells, dwarves and zombies and make it out alive so they can continue their quest. I love the relationship between Berklak and Lawton and love they've fallen for each other.

I can't wait until the next instalment.

This has less humor perhaps than the first two parts, but we keep seeing how Lawton and Berklak relationship evolves, and how important is to surround yourself with the rigth people.
I loved how the dwarfs face fostering and adopting people, wish in real world were similar.
We get to know every companion a little more in this instalment, and meet new foes and friends,
Lawton is so achingly sweet in a nation that despises him, so kindhearted despite the hate he receives. And at the same time is a hardcore necromancer able of the mos surprising feats.
Berklak falling bit by bit in love with him is really entertaining because it seems a perpetual surprise for Berklak that it`s happening and it`s well received.
We find more mead for Berklak here too!

I Went on an Adventure and All I Got Was This Barbarian Orc Chapter three was an engaging mix of love and zombies. Lawton and Berklak continue to travel through the dwarven tunnels but even though their quest is noble and dire, they have hearts in their eyes. They are so adorably in love! And the rest of the team continues to bond with each other and them as well.

When this chapter gets down to the action it does get a bit dark. But the prowess of the quest team and the amazing powers of Lawton are up for the challenge. The author adds a lot of world building that is full of fun details.

This is the third installment of an ongoing series (gentle note here that you’ll want to start at the beginning, if you haven’t already). The action/adventure parts of things are picking up here, the stakes feel a bit higher, and the events have the potential to be a bit darker, although there are still plenty of lighter notes and some swoony and steamy ones as well. The characters are really the heart of this ongoing storyline, and it’s so easy to get caught up in them— Lawton, Berklak, and team are amazing and I only want good things for them. Well worth a read.

This is a very cute serial. Although this one is a tad darker than the previous book, Lawton has found some lovely friends in the travel group. They move through the next step in the journey with new experiences and creative resolutions for and from Lawton. They are still missing information on what is actually creating the problems in the world, but a little more has been discovered and they are heading into the next stage of the quest.

No notable proofreading issues in the ARC, just maybe a few missing commas.

"This is quality—” I take a deep breath and swallow back the difficulty of what I’m about to say as I hold up the tankard. “D-do you want a sip?”

Poor Berklak, look at his character growth offering a sip of his precious mead! This story continues the fluffy, OTT romance between our main men, and we got an underground adventure as the quest continues to unfold.

“Culturally dwarf is as good as biologically dwarf,” Lawton hums happily.” I love that.”
Kamora grunts and nods. “Eh dwerf tis eh dwerf tis eh dwerf.”

I liked the overall message the dwarf community passed to readers in this installment. Culturally or biologically, a dwarf is a dwarf is a dwarf =) The worldbuilding continues to be super fun - though I surprisingly do wish for even the tiniest bit of angst to break things up a little. We'll see where Adventure 4 takes us!

The adventure continues as the team goes into the tunnels and caves of the dwarves, following the trail of the mysterious incidents and the darkness.

I really enjoy books where a MC has a lonely past and now is able to find loyal friends, I like how the party gets along and how they are starting to feel more and more like a family... And Lawton and Berklak's relationship is really cute.

Onto the next.

POV: dual
Tropes: half-orc/necromancer, prince MC, fictional magical world setting.
Spice: low (one short detailed scene)
CW: zombies(not highly detailed), some violence.

I am loving this romp! This is honestly written like someone was sitting at a table and playing a real tabletop RPG and I love it! They must have failed their investigation checks in this installment. But I loved it so much. Berklak and Lawton are like #relationshipgoals and this group of adventurers is very much the best kind of found family. This is a great read and has everything I could ask for in a fantasy adventure…orcs, dwarves, bad guys, zombies…and cute little chaos goblins that come in the shape of a Royal necromancer. Onward and er..downward on the way to Drokagard!

More adventures await

Our adventure continues in the dwarvan mines as they need to take down an army of Dwarf zombies. Woman are still being driven to hurting their spouses. They are all under this spell. Someone has sabotaged the mine to cave in and set a curse to kill their only means of help. Law and his group are on it and will look for the culprit. They are a great team of warriors and friends and they are fun to read about.

this is very much the mid point in the book, mostly it's about getting more question thrown at the group than anything else, though they still had an adventure, the relationships grew, not only between Law and Berkllak but also between Law and the rest of the group. honestly I'm just truly enjoying the adventure

This story just keeps getting better and better every time. I cannot wait to find out what happens next. I know there’s only supposed to be five episodes but I won’t be ready for this to be over.

Highly recommend. Definitely must be read in order.

I loved it just as much as the previous installment. Like most of Jennifer Cody's works it's hilarious, fantastical, sweet, and attention grabbing. Really my only complain is the length, they're so short it's torture. By the time something happens the book is over and now we're left to wait for the next "Chapter." I do wish it was one long book or released back to back.

the adventure continues

Woo boy! The story gets a bit darker and more interesting. There is lots of mead! The dwarves truly confuse and irritate me! Fun times happen! And we are off to a large dwarf city in the next installment. Another fantastic chapter in this quirky awesome series!

I love the band of people Law has put together on his quest.
A little more serious 8in this instalment but Berklak manages to find a whole lot of mead which makes him very happy and Law offers jobs to all the crew once the quest is over.
We learn a little more about each of the gang and we have the beginnings of 2 falling in love.

Ch. 3- All about dwarves

The team has made contact with the dwarves and it seems the miasma affecting the surface has spread below ground as well.
Besides dwarves we get zombies, a (new) necromancer who's never necromanced, and fire walkers (they're birds. kinda). Can't wait to see where this goes...

On to Ch 4- but start at Ch 1 or you're gonna be lost. ;)

The author’s world building is amazing! I like learning more about the different species! :)

I truly appreciate the glossary and list of characters in the beginning, very neat guide! I too love that all of the group of adventurers have adopted each other, lol.

The mystery is intriguing. I’m definitely reading on! :)
