Pirates of Darksea

'Utterly brilliant. Sensationally swashbuckling. Completely magical' – A.F Steadman, author of Skandar and the Unicorn Thief

From the award-winning author of The Storm Keeper's Island, set sail on Catherine Doyle's latest perilous adventure to the magical islands of Darksea.

Deep in the heart of the Atlantic Ocean, where the full moon rests on the horizon, lies a secret kingdom called Darksea. Ruled by the Pirate King, Captain O'Malley, Darksea's tranquil waters have, of late, been haunted by an invisible and deadly monster – a monster that is eating the once-beautiful islands in gigantic bites.

On the other side of the horizon, at his home in Galway, Max Reid and his family are battling a different monster. His big brother Christopher is in hospital and getting sicker – and his parents have begun to talk of miracles.

Then one night a loud, bright red parrot taps on Max's bedroom window, carrying an invitation from the pirate king. Captain O'Malley needs a new crew member for a dangerous quest; and the reward is everything Max has been hoping for.

But in Darksea, not everyone is as they seem. When Captain O'Malley's secret threatens to upend their mission and destroy Max's chance to help his family, Max realises he's going to have to navigate much more than he bargained for…

A little bit pirates of the Caribbean, a little bit Peter Pan, and a lot of Cat Doyle magic is a recipe for a great middle grade adventure! I loved Max’s character arc, his adventure, and his repartee with Squawk the Parrot!

When your brother sneaks out one night and heads to the beach, you have to follow, don't you? Especially when you find out he's going on an adventure with a real-life pirate to the secret world of Darksea! Max Reid remembered that night clearly when, two years later, he finally gets to meet Captain O'Malley, who failed to turn up the first time but now wants his help!

Many things have changed over the past 24 months, and Darksea is in danger, its magic waning as a powerful enemy devours everything in its path. Max's life has changed too, and now he really needs the small amount of stardust Captain O'Malley is offering. In return, he has to complete a dangerous task and, as he's sure it is the only thing that can solve his family’s insurmountable problems, Max knows he has no choice.

A fast-moving, exciting, but thoughtful novel, The Pirates of Darksea deals with serious and not so serious problems with care and consideration. Max has had a difficult time recently, and so have the crew of The Stolen Sunrise, and the solutions for both are shown to be easier to face and work through if you aren’t alone. The magic is used cleverly and never in a way that was obvious beforehand, and there is a parrot! I wasn't familiar with this author, but I will be remedying this as I thoroughly enjoyed the adventure, friendship, and humour, all of which is expertly executed.

I was able to read an advanced copy of this book thanks to NetGalley and the publishers, Bloomsbury Publishing Plc (UK & ANZ)/Bloomsbury Children's Books, but the opinions expressed are my own. Aimed at readers aged 9 and above, this is a great read for enthusiastic and reluctant readers alike. Recommended.

Sensationally swashbuckling indeed! This book had me GRIPPED and sweeps you along for an adventure bursting with pirates, monsters and quests for magic.

I rapidly fell in love with Christopher and Max: two brothers with a head for adventure. We meet them at the very beginning of their journeys, with the whispers of a mythical ship and a courageous and awe inspiring captain. And they believe! So one day, Christopher decides to try his luck and gain permission to board and set sail for adventures unknown.

But life as ever, sometimes finds a way of getting in the way..! Max takes up the mantle and he has a lot at stake.

Getting to know the characters was great, from talking parrots, to the crew and friends. It’s impossible not to be hooked, moved and truly invested in the story! It’s fast paced and a quick mover so you blink, and it’s over before you know it! A true epic from start to finish.

Thank you to the author and publisher for this book on NetGalley in return for my honest thoughts and review.

Ahoi, Abenteurer!

I love love love Catherine Doyle. Many thanks to Bloomsbury and NetGalley for an e-arc of this wonderful book.
Catherine Doyle has a way with words that I truly can’t describe. She’s made me laugh with sarcastic banter but had me sobbing when things got rough. The balance between lightheartedness and emotional damage was fine and just perfect.
The story follows Max and he’s as badass as any pirate I’ve read about. He’s brave and funny and loyal. There’s a lot happening in the book which keeps the pacing on a good level. It’s adventure and friendship and family. It’s a huge wave of adventure with a strong undercurrent of emotions and it was such a pleasure to be on board of the Stolen Sunrise.
Everyone should read this gem.

Exciting swashbuckling aboard the Stolen Sunrise. There’s an undertow of emotion as young Max proves himself worthy and saves Darksea. My one quibble is these are pirates who never do any actual piracy. I blame Johnny Depp

“Pirates of Darksea” is an interesting and fairly satisfying YA fantasy. It does not,I feel, match the striking originality of the excellent “Stormkeepers” trilogy.

11 year old Max Reid finds himself catapaulted into an adventure meant for his older brother Christopher. Since Christopher is seriously ill in hospital, it falls to Max to help save the magical world of Darksea from mortal peril.

Each island on Max's quest is beautifully described, the characters are well fleshed out and the story zips along with pace and humour. This would be impressive enough but Catherine Doyle also manages to pack an emotional punch into this book, which would be an ideal class read aloud for Key Stage 2.

Many thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for the ARC which I received in exchange for an honest review.

Max looks up to his big brother Christopher, so when he tells him of a pirate captain from a magical world called Darksea, Max believes him. They’ve waited to catch a glimpse of the ship on the horizon many nights, but only one of them is finally called to sail upon it.

A landlubber is required by the Captain of the Stolen Sunrise for a very special task and Max is suddenly in the world his big brother told stories of. Darksea is made up of vast oceans sailed by many ships among dozens of islands, all held in the hands of magic.

The magic is fading though. Where it was once plentiful, it now seems to be swallowed by the sea wherever it falls – useless to those who need it to survive. Max is surprised at being in this new strange world, but is keen to find a little of this fabled magic. He needs it to take home to Christopher, lying sick in hospital.

What begins with a quest to save Christopher turns into a mission to save all of Darksea, his new pirate friends, and a sarcastic, rude but always funny parrot named Squawk.

Max must face up to an evil pirate that is gobbling up chunks of Darksea, an island at a time. There are Darksea myths to learn and understand including the strange creatures that live there. Something has grown in the depths of the Darksea ocean, and has now risen to wreak havoc on them all.

With Christopher always in his thoughts, Max faces one challenge at a time to reach his goal of saving his big brother. He surprises everyone, but himself most of all as he vanquishes his true fears.

I loved this author’s surprising The Lost Girl King.

Pirates of Darksea whilst completely different, is just as brilliant!

A pirate ship and a giant wave that takes you to a new dimension. A little brother taking his sick older brother’s task upon his shoulders.

Facing up to a cranky captain, missing magic, monsters and zombie pirates! What a winning combination!

There are no boring bits in this magical, rollicking, roaring ride of a tale on a pirate ship in another dimension. Sibling love is a double thread woven through the story amongst the danger, and courageous actions of main character Max and his new best friend. A talking, sarcastic, rude and clever parrot is hilarious in the mix, making me laugh out loud often.

Tension rises steadily as Max’s mission becomes clear all the while knowing he is also desperately needed somewhere else. Max is someone to root for as he endears himself to Darksea inhabitants by doing the best he can by them. His growing relationship with the parrot reminded me of Long John Silver and a teen Jim Hawkins in the movie Treasure Planet (A personal favourite).

I received an eARC from the publisher through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. It has not affected my opinions.

PIRATES OF DARKSEA is a fun pirate adventure on a magical land.

Max gets to visit so many places on his quest to save Darksea (and his brother.) There's a volcanic island, the eaten remains of the mermaid's island, and a creepy tomb island - and more. I loved the breadth of imagination behind the world and getting to explore it alongside Max. Plus there is the world of the ship too, of course. All these pirate setting tropes makes the world feel familiar and magical all at once.

There is of course danger and action - pirate battles, monsters of different varieties, and daring escapes. Think Pirates of the Caribbean with fewer candlelight taverns and more plucky kids. The whole plot is a great deal of fun, sailing from adventure to danger while Max doubts his ability to rise to the challenge.

Max and his brother are at the heart of the book, even with Christopher being absent. Christopher is in hospital with some sort of cancer. Max wants to help but he's also scared of what it all means. The brothers write to one another across the book, which was a great way to establish and build their relationship so we can see how important they are to one another.

Like THE LOST GIRL KING, this is a standalone novel that takes kids from our world into another one. It's also a standalone, wrapping up the entire story in one book. While there is scope for the brothers to have more adventures, it also is satisfying enough if there isn't another book (but I'd like to see something from both of their perspectives, how Christopher feels now his little brother has had a big adventure and he hasn't.)

Who doesn't love Pirates??

The Pirates of Darksea by Catherine Doyle does not disappoint, with just enough 'arrrghs', shipmates, maps, and parrots to have a proper adventure! I loved it!

When Max has the chance to sail with a real pirate in a magical world, he grabs it with both hands. Max's older brother Christopher is very poorly, and he believes if he can visit Darksea and get hold of some of its mystical stardust, he may just be able to help his brother get better.

But all is not as it seems, and Max must first make a deal with the King of Pirates, Captain O"Malley, then try to save Darksea from an island chomping ship, before he can even think about getting his hands on the stardust.

But even with the aid of his newfound shipmates, can Max summon the courage to rid Darksea of evil, restore the magic, and succeed in his own quest to help Christopher?

This is such a terrific story, not only for its fantastical pirates but for its messages of love, friendship, and bravery.
In true pirate fashion, there is treasure to find, but this time, it's not in the form of gold and jewels, but for Max, it is the magical stardust.
Catherine touches gently on illness and how to try and cope with it within your family and manages to give it a positive twist.
Max and his friends - all great characters - end up in a whole host of escapades, which are thrilling and exciting to read. I flew through the book as I wanted to find out what happened next, and the addition of a map at the front of the book was also ideal for working out where the characters were at particular points in the adventure.

If you are looking for fast-paced, swashbuckling escapades, then this is the book for you. I guarantee you'll enjoy it!

In a secret land, set in the far reaches of the Atlantic Ocean, there is trouble brewing. Darksea is the domain of the pirate king, Captain O'Malley, but can anyone really keep this beautiful island kingdom safe from the monster that seems intent on devouring it?

Max and his family have other things on their minds - not least his brother Christopher's illness, which shows no sign of improvement. So, when an unexpected messenger arrives to offer Max a chance to help his brother - in exchange for participating in a dangerous quest - the answer would appear to be a no brainer. Christopher needs a miracle, and the promised stardust may even be able to deliver it. But is the offer too good to be true?

This is an enjoyable and adventurous story, creatively written. With a satisfying amount of swashbuckling, it also addresses more serious questions about the choices we're given, the decisions we make, and the nature of attachment and affection. Great entertainment with a good amount of substance to it. It gets 3.5 stars.

Pirates of Darksea is a swashbuckling tale, full of perilous adventure and magical moments! Doyle knows how to weave a magical adventure that captivates the reader. This time it's pirates and deadly monster, and one boy's adventure to save Darksea - and his brother.

Max's brother Christopher has talked years about Stolen Sunrise, a famous pirate ship in Darksea, and the adventure it would be. When Captain O'Malley finally invites Christopher for an adventure, he's in the hospital and in a desperate effort, Max joins the adventure instead. He needs magic to heal his brother and it seems that Captain O'Malley needs Max's help to retrieve an infamous sword. There's so many brilliant adventures and heart-warming moments as well as funny banter - and one hilarious talking parrot.

What a gripping tale this is. It kept me on the edge of my seat and made me yearn for a magical adventure on a pirate ship. Max is a wonderful and relatable main character and there's plethora of intriguing secondary characters. I hope that there's going to be a sequel, that would be wonderful.

I started this book as a Catherine Doyle fan and now I'm an even bigger one.

Max has an older brother, Christopher, who dreams of a pirate adventures. When the invitation comes to join the crew of the Stolen Sunset, which plies the seas beyond the horizon in the magical world of Darksea, Christopher is ill in hospital so Max goes instead.

He meets a pirate queen who is less than impressive, a very mouthy parrot and a host of fellow pirates. Also the bad guy is a really good one.

I loved how this story just picked you up and rolled you along. It is a brilliant adventure. Even though there is the worry about Max's brother, it is never too overwhelming. I would recommend it for any children who enjoy fantasy and adventure stories.

Ahoy matey! Hold onto your hats because this swashbuckling sea adventure is like no other!

Jump aboard the Stolen Sunrise and set sail into depths of the Darksea!
Whether you're a seadog at heart or a leary landlubber, this crew will find a task for you!

Maybe you could swab the decks or keep an eye out for enemy ships from the crows nest?
Maybe the Captain will take a liking to you and let you set sail to a marooned island with unforetold treasures..
Maybe you'll start feeling courageous and cause a mutiny and the crew will sing shanties in your honor?

Whatever you decide, it wont be easy. There are troublesome times ahead that will test your courage, strength and patience (and thats just the Captain).

See you on the seas ya scallywag unless you'd rather walk the plank? 😉🏴‍☠️

I really like Catherine Doyle's writing. She knows how to tell a tale, and her books are perfect for children. This one is no exception. The story of a boy swept up in a magical pirate adventure, seeking the magic that will safe his brother, who is seriously ill in hospital. It has some wonderful characters, including a brilliant talking parrot, and a protagonist who has both desires, driving the story, and a deeper need that he must resolve. Plenty of adventure and plenty of depth wrapped in a very enjoyable and well written narrative. I really liked this one and it is thoroughly recommended for young readers or anyone who enjoys stories intended for younger readers.

Swashbuckling adventure like a modern Peter Pan-esque story. These is a sassy talking parrot, sword fights and outsmarting the bad guys...and lots of magic!
Max boards a famous mystical pirate ship of the O'Malley's in his brother's place...because Christopher is in hospital and has been for a long time.
Mainly a very excitable book but there is a tiny bit of sadness.

Thank you author, this book is really really good. This book is about pirates - Max goes on a journey with Ruby and Ashir and Captian O'Malley and all the rest of the crew, and defeats the dreadmaker and then goes home and then next time Christopher also comes to sail on the Stolen Sunrise. My favourite part was the end. I wish this was an infinite book.

An absolutely brilliant piratical story. It had shades of Pirates of the Caribbean, but then more on top. I loved it. It has everything that you want from a pirate story: fights, creatures, whirlpools, bad pirates. And magic. So much magic. This book will.not disappoint anyone.

Pirates of Darksea by Catherine Doyle follows Max who's brother, Christopher, introduced him to the story of Captain Thorn O'Malley of the Stolen Sunrise two years ago. Now two years later Christopher, is stuck in hospital his latest treatment not working and getting sicker, and Max is offered the chance to visit Darksea and Captain O'Malley's ship, just without his brother.

I have read from Catherine Doyle's co-written teenage books before so was excited to read from her with a younger target audience and as a solo writer and she did not disappoint.

I was hooked from the prologue and could not put the book down desperate to know how everything would go for Max. I read it over two sittings in one day due to a prior commitment but if I had the chance it would have been all at once.

I loved nearly everything about the book, including the pirates, magic, adventure and characters. Max was an extremely likeable young boy who you couldn't help but root for and accompanied by Ruby they made a team that you supported and hoped who get out of every situation they ended up in. It was great to see how strong their friendship ended up during the story too.

The pirates and magic made a great addition to the overall theme and story, with characters who had a huge personality and you just wanted to learn more and more about and a world that's magic had constraints and couldn't just be used to fix everything. The adventure was great to read about and had me loving exploring Darksea.

The themes that were explored in this book were also really key and ones that I would say have a high importance. The ending was really well done, and I liked how Max and Captain O'Malley's final conversation went, I think it was definitely a lot better than just using magic to fix the issue.

Overall an easy 4.5 star read that I loved and makes me so interested in reading more of Catherine Doyle's work. Highly recommend.
