The covert first mission of the re-formed Birds of Prey has established their beachhead…in Themyscira! What could be so important to Black Canary that she’d risk the wrath of the greatest warriors on Earth?!
KELLY THOMPSON has a degree in Sequential Art from The Savannah College of Art & Design. Her love of comics and superheroes have compelled her since she first discovered them as a teenager. Currently living in Portland, Oregon with her boyfriend and the two brilliant cats that run their lives, you can find Kelly all over the Internet where she is generally well liked, except where she's detested.
Kelly has published two novels - THE GIRL WHO WOULD BE KING (2012) and STORYKILLER (2014) and the graphic novel HEART IN A BOX from Dark Horse Comics (2015). She's currently writing ROGUE & GAMBIT, HAWKEYE, and PHASMA for Marvel Comics and GHOSTBUSTERS for IDW. Other major credits include: A-Force, Captain Marvel & The Carol Corps, Jem and The Holograms, Misfits, Power Rangers Pink, and the creator-owned mini-series Mega Princess.
Kelly's ambitions are eclipsed only by her desire to exist entirely in pajamas. Fortunately pajamas and writers go hand in hand (most of the time). Please buy all her stuff so that she can buy (and wear) more pajamas.
This new Birds of Prey team have to sneak into Themyscira on an extraction mission. Why sneak in? Aside from alerting an entire island filled with armed and trained Amazons, season warriors all, they are hoping to avoid the involvement of one of the top superheroes on Earth, the Amazon princess who can go toe to toe with Superman. You know who, and the Birds will certainly not be welcomed for their little secret invasion.
With a team that continues to wonderfully bounce off each other and a setup that promises action, this issue serves as fun filler with a small side of stupid.
The most impressive part of this fun is Harley is actually funny. That big Bi----Bisexual line got me. Overall fun storyline, and now Wonder Woman is involved it should get even better.
Should have known seeing Wonder Woman on the cover this would be peak, and I was completely right this series continues to be amazing. But right as we get this series started it seems that the concern the time traveling Meridian brought to Dinah about a force trying to take her sister, Sin, as a host has never been closer to her than on Themyscira as we can see that it had already taken over the Amazon Penelope but doesn’t see her as a worthy vessel. And I can only imagine it will keep hopping from one host to another until it lands on Sin. But the BOP have not somewhat of a wall, the wall being they have Harley Quinn the responsibility of getting them on Themyscira and in return she gave them King Shark and his ability to command all the giant sharks that swarm the island. Good thing they thought their scuba gear, except Barda who has no need for that. The plan is insane, but after holding on for dear life in a net I side of a giant shark and landing safely on the beaches of Themyscira, even Dinah has to thank Harley for putting this together. But as they look around it seems that just as Meridian showed up to greet them they also lost a bird as Zealot is no where to be seen. But passing through a few trees to the next beach over they find zealot performing some kind of blood ritual with a few magic worms before caking their sliced open arm in the sand on the island and finishing the ritual. She reveals that she just made a pact with the island and can no longer die while there nor kill anyone else. She tests this by immediately driving a sword into Harley Quinn…who thankfully doesn’t die. Glad that’s working.
So the current plan, find Sin as fast as possible and get her to Barda as fast as possible to teleport off the island as fast as possible. Unfortunately it won’t be as fast for everyone else because they don’t matter, only Sin. The group splits off into groups of two as they sneak around the island and stealthily take down amazons along the way. Harley and Dinah are able to sneak into some of the main pretty looking buildings, Meridian and Zealot are able to use their skills to take down some amazons hidden in the trees, and Barda and Cass get their own taste of tree amazons…except they also come face to face with the creature trying to get to sin! It detects the mega rod Barda brought with her, then almost as of it possessed the trees it was able to twirl them into a giant beast that stole the mega rod from them then dipped out…oh no, we really need that. But it’s Dinah and Harley that have the ultimate victory, this far as they are able to find Sin chilling out in her room in the main hall. They don’t have much time to explain as the emergency bells start ringing, someone obviously noticed something is up, but they need to her sin out of here now.
With the emergency bells ringing you know what that means…Diana is also aware of the trouble on the island which is why Oliver, and the bag of tricks they got from Constantine to outfit his arrows, is currently in Washington DC with Diana in his sights to slow her down as much as possible. He immediately begins by sending an arrow with a magic purple grail that actually breaks wonder woman’s skin…but doesn’t seem to actually do anything. Ollie tried to zip line away but as Diana’s tiara breaks his line, he realizes that it’s not working. Using a foam arrow he is able to encase himself in a ball of foam to break his fall, but the only thing that will be braking soon is his bones as Diana approaches, none of the other tricks from the bag seem to be doing anything and as Diana tosses him around she realizes that he is only trying to delay her from getting to Themyscira. Which is why the end of this issue has Diana, who is rocking the curly hair hard, there way too soon.
Dinah: “Wonder Woman. Everyone is obviously afraid of Batman. And they should be. Despite everything, everyone is also afraid of Superman. As they should be. Everyone just loves Diana. As they should. They should also be very, very afraid.”

Every issue of this book continues to deliver - upping the ante in this chaotic rescue mission. This is a fun team-up book with each of the characters showing up and making up part of the mosaic. There are nice beats throughout, fro the revelation of Harley Quinn’s plan — traveling inside a Megaladon! — to Zealot’s protective spell.
There’s some good synergy with Tom King’s main WW book, too, that I hope will keep up. Diane is having a moment right now.
Birds of Prey #3 felt a bit slower than the first two issues. Thompson’s banter and character moments are still solid, but the plot treads water more than it moves forward this time. There’s some fun setup and nice beats with the team, but not much actually happens.
Romero’s art and Bellaire’s colors still look great — vibrant and stylish as ever — but overall this one felt more like a bridge issue than something that stands out on its own. A decent chapter, just not as punchy as I’d hoped.
Art style is peak, and the writing continue in quality. Thompson should be writing way more stuff, this is very interesting in a way that really fleshes out characters and gives them personhood and richness. I want more. can’t wait to be caught by like tomorrow haha
4 stars. Finally! A good issue in this series! I thought this was a lot of fun and Diana is here! Love her! Can't wait to continue on and fingers crossed that this series is on the up from here.
