The news has made headlines—"Korea and Japan join hands to exterminate the terrifying magic beasts on Jeju Island once and for all!” It’s a monumental moment for the people of the country…and it has absolutely nothing to do with Jinwoo. Instead, the newest S-rank hunter’s number-one priority is bringing his recently recovered mother back home where she belongs at last. When the situation on Jeju Island takes a devastating turn for the worse, though, will the country's top hunters be strong enough to save the day without him?
Summary: This is the fourth book of the ‘Solo Leveling” light novel series. The events in this book take place immediately after where the last book left off.
Positives: + I am delighted that crafting has been included in his world, cracks me up. As an avid crafter in video games, this has always been a bit amusing for me, so unlike actually creating something from your hands IRL. + I love that this book elaborates more on the hunters around the world. Interesting to see what the book Korea thinks about various other countries. I was cackling reading about how the USA handled their own hunters.
Final Thoughts: OOOO i like the arc that this book covered in the story very much. I wouldn’t say it's my favorite of the 4 books out, but maybe second? More awesome new companions, more elaborating on world scale politicking, and of course more growth in ability. Those last few lines though.. What a hook for the next book. Fully intend to continue with the series and impatiently waiting for book 5.
I think this is my favorite novel so far. I'm surprised at how different the Jeju Island incident is from the manhwa/anime. Only a tiny group of ants actually had wings, and none of them made it to the mainland after Beru was killed.
I've been ambivalent about Jinwoo Sung since the start of the series, but midway through the previous novel, I've started warming up to him. He seems to be more considerate of others, and I like how he hasn't allowed his successes to get to his head. It's kind of funny how he doesn't understand how much his presence affects those around him. 4.5 stara
Starting from this volume anime is no longer covering my back, so my anxiety is kicking in as it always goes with Chinese or in this case Korean novels. They love drama so much I have to take breaks from reading! But despite some obvious flaws I'm still enjoying it so much I'm pretty sure I'll start manhwa as soon as I finish volume 8😁
Here wraps up the Jeju Island arc and some new content sprinkled in with the new guild setup stuff. I believe we're almost caught up with the manga here and will be once the school raid is over, next volume. I can't wait so I'm staying up late to binge on! Lol
Kind of annoyingly xenophobic. Very conservative in general. All women either exist to be protected or to lust after the mc. Also seems like the main conflict isn't even established this far in.

The long-awaited Jeju Island Arc bevins. Then it concludes not long afterward. As I figured, it's very much a dickride of Hunter x Hunter, including having the Ant Queen birth a powerful new Ant King to lead their people. Chugong fuckin' has the ant king walk past the Hunters just like Meruem (lmao). And this dude has a Skill letting him absorb and learn from eaten enemies...! But in a weird twist, Chugong does the complete opposite of what Togashi was aiming for with Meruem: the Jeju Island Ant King ain't shit compared to Jinwoo, and he gets dabbed on almost immediately upon meeting our hero. No nukes required. Togashi made a twist on Cell's drive for Perfection by having this impossible-to-defeat enemy; Chugong makes his Ant King feel even weaker than the Cell Juniors Son Gohan cut in half with his kicks. Very odd choice. There's a sense of HYPE as we build toward Jinwoo's arrival on the island, then... that's it. No climax, not really. I kind of felt nothing toward the Ant King fight. BUT... we tease a return to the God Statue from the OG Double Dungeon, so I'm definitely HYPEd for that.
****
It's funny how certain Americans are so focused on virtue-signaling that they trip over themselves and get upset about the wrong things. There's a review here calling this volume xenophobic. Because the Japanese are depicted as cartoonish bad guys. The Japanese who... subjugated and marginalized Koreans for decades...? I'd think this reviewer is being alt-right and would similarly complain about neo-blaxploitation poking fun at white people, like e.g. Shuri calling the CIA dude a "colonizer" in Black Panther, but... this same reviewer continues on to... lament the conservatism of the novel...? The novel where... the marginalized Koreans are able to band together in national fraternity after proving their strength against historic oppressors...? What. Why does this website attract so many idiots? Or... "why do stupid people complain about silly things in light novels?," is probably the bigger question.

I want you to be with me until the end, or something like that.
Solo Leveling Volume 4 is the fourth instalment in the portal fantasy series by the same name. Written in third person POV, we continue Jinwoo Sung's journey. Jeju Island has proved to be a threat to Asia with Japan and Korea teaming up for the fourth (and hopefully) final raid of this S Rank dungeon break. With Jinwoo officially S rank there are those with their eyes on him...but with his ultimate plan to recover his mother finally in motion Jinwoo takes a step back. Can Japan and Korea's top hunters manage without him?
What I enjoyed most about this chapter of the series is the marked transition we see here. Jinwoo finally achieves what he wants but now he must decide what he will do next. We get this really beautiful moment for Jinwoo before launching into an epic battle arc and the repercussions of it.
We also get to see other hunters in action in this book as well as introductions to hunters from abroad that really open up the story and world. We come to understand how much this is not just about Korea and Japan. I felt the new personalities and characters shake things up and have me excited for what they offer. There are plenty of unanswered questions from this book (the system, the strange creature/person found in the gate, the demons, etc) BUT we are moving into the next story arc where a lot of this will be explored.
I don't want to spoil much as this series really unveils a lot as the books progress. I will say if you are curious - this book stops where season two of the anime and volume 7 of the manhwa ends.
Honestly, please go read this series for me. I want more people to talk to about it.
The books are so much better than the animated show.
Pros:
1. I love how we see the MC face somewhat challenging foes in this book. I enjoyed reading a fight that had some tension and back and forth to it.
2. Chugong does a great job of introducing the other hero agencies across the world. He realistically showed how the philosophy/economy of each country would cause them to run their hero agencies.
For instance, China copied other hero agency technology, and the United States attracted heroes from other countries to join their agency as a "melting pot".
3. The potential love interest gains traction in this book. The MC and this potential partner interact in ways they didn't in previous books. I love how Chugong stayed true to each character's personality when writing their interactions with one another.
4. I love how in-depth and well-thought-out the political dialogue is in this book between world leaders.
5. Without spoiling too much, the author stays true to the book title "Solo Leveling". We get to see our beloved MC overcome adversity on his own, even when other "teammates" are involved.
04/07/2025 4 ⭐ I fear I'm quickly coming up to the point I've read up to in the manhwa, and I really don't know if I should pause here and binge the rest of the light novels after I finish the manhwa later this year. I hate making decisions! Someone, please tell me what to do!
I didn't really like it much. It was just an anthology of Mr. Perfect solving every problem instantaneously. The early volumes had an element of struggle but it's completely gone in this one.
Ant King shows up and butchers all the S rank hunters. Jinwoo shows up. I say "heck yeah, finally Jinwoo is fighting something that is on his level". Lol nah. He wins in two paragraphs. The books started pretty great but have rapidly devolved into the "Jinwoo is perfect show" where he never fails at anything that matters, everybody loves him and wants him either romantically or in their guild, and he always gets his way. There was an ENTIRE CHAPTER devoted to online forums talking about how cool Jinwoo is. Bro is the biggest Gary Stu.
Hopefully it picks up and he has to actually struggle again? At some point? Because currently, the series is already over and there's nowhere for it to go. He is on top of the world and is Mr. Perfect, so where is the conflict?

Man, we finally got to see the difference of power between S rank hunters. Also, since it had been so long since I read the comics I was basically in the dark about who makes it.
But what I like as we go on is Jinwoo. This is still a power fantasy, but unlike the others that seek to become rulers, masterminds, or get revenge, are hero just wants to get stronger. Honestly, his one minded focus and good attitude are what makes him so great. Honestly favorite moment is the famous trope of guy not picking up signals that the girl is into him. Hae-In out there trying to get closer, and my man is like, what scheme is she planning her heart is beating faster as if she's nervous.

After playing the game based on this part or arc of Solo Leveling I decided to read the novel and I have read the previous ones from audiobooks and digital forms like this one. This series is one to truly cherish as this arc of "Jeju Island" or the "Ant Extermination Raid on Jeju Island" if you wanna be technical is a pivotal moment for seeing the most powerful hunter be tested truly on their skills. Of course some could say it was worth a wait but others would be sad to see this book and remind them of issues but read it to find out. I recommend it to teenagers as it has a few words of inappropriate but more when fighting occurs or issues happen between characters involved.
Honestly I'm impressed the story is still going strong for how.... uncompelling the world is. I don't hate it or anything. I just based on how the world is designed I kinda expected this would peter out by now and it hasn't. It's almost like they have one good arc and they're stretching it out. Buuuuuut the stretch out isn't making it worse. The Jeju Island stuff happened. We got a hint of the mega players waiting in the shadows. I swear one of them was JInwoo's father but I kinda lost track. I swear that was something that happened in book two and it's kinda fallen off.. I think.
Several comment after reading the 4th book: - Jin-woo starting to become more likeable for me and not just a cocky and stiff kid. Its because of cha hae in. Waiting to see how this couple's story progresses. - Beru, in my imagination looks like Cell from dragon ball. Curious to see what it actually look like in anime.
Overall enjoy the book. New character and new clue to the overall mystery. The story getting more interesting.
The light novel is much better than the anime. The author's definitely know how to write a cliffhanger at the end of each book.
My main complaint is that the book feels pretty unbalanced. We'll go for over a hundred pages without Jinwoo interacting with another character, then finally get some character-to-character plot development. The opening arc was all about saving his mom... who then had maybe three pages of presence in the rest of the novel. There's nothing I hate, it's just not as solidly written as I feel like it should be by volume four.
Easily the best volume I've read so far. The Jeju arc was epic, especially when Jin Woo appeared to save the S-rankers. I got goosebumps and my heart was pounding as if I'm one of the viewers of the live broadcast. It's always satisfying and exciting when the main character revealed their true prowess to the public. It's a scene that I will never get tired of no matter in what series or books I'm reading. Revelation scenes are always the best! Now on to the 5th book!
As a Min Byunggu stan, I am in tatters on the floor, obviously, even though this is the third time I'm experiencing this story because I watched the anime and read the manhwa first. I was especially unprepared for his mum to appear. Wails. That said, I prefer the adaptations' take on his death and brief raising as a shadow.
I know the plot is very generic but I honestly really enjoyed this book I know the characters arent written the best but no story is prefect
I really enjoy the light hearted moments like when Jinwoo was teasing Haein Or when that worker wanted jinwoo to sprain his ankle A story doesn’t have to be perfect just entertaining
I just love this series - this volume really started exploring how other's perceive our Hunter Sung and how he is going to be interacting with the life outside of the dungeons. The Jeju Island situation played out how I fully expected to in such a satisfying way.
