Potions and the Pleasantly Poisoned by Eloise Everhardt
4.70 rating
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily. This is a delightful cozy mystery with witchery thrown in to boot. I enjoyed the subtle tension throughout, and the occasional red herrings. Add that in with an animal rescue location started in the town, and you have a purr-fect situation. There was no sexual content, nor was there any graphic violence even though there was definitely a murder, . . . or two. The ending was most satisfying. There were hints of things to come in the next volume and I believe this would be a fun series to follow. I highlighted some text, which is available on Book Sirens. A fun, quick read.

This is a wonderful witch cozy mystery! Dani has to go manage her grandmother's estate after her death and, of course, finds out that her magical powers will come out. She has no idea what to think but soon realizes that magic is always useful in a murder investigation!

First of all, I want to thank Booksirens for giving me this book for free and I really appreciate it. Next is the author who writes this book. Thank you so much and I enjoyed reading your book:)

Potions and the Pleasantly Poisoned is such a nice book although the chapters are easy to read and a fast-paced book. So who's a fan of mystery and witches books? Probably, you will love this one! I like fast-paced books so I easily read the book. The writing, plot, and characters are good. I am not a really fan of witches but kind of. The book just caught my attention to its cover so I hop in! I will definitely recommend this book to my friends and readers:)

Potions and the Pleasantly Poisoned is a cozy witch mystery that follows Dani as she learns she is a witch. As she is learning this, she works to try to use her new powers to help solve the murder of her childhood friend.

This book was exactly what I think a cozy mystery should be. A quick and easy read with heartwarming details (kittens), and a straightforward plot.

You are not going to get tons of plot twists, be prepared for a quick solution to the mystery once our FMC is on the right track.

Overall I would say 3.5/4 stars

I really enjoyed this cozy magical mystery! It had some of my favourite elements

✅ Cozy mystery
✅ Magic and witches
✅ Small town

I was drawn into the story quickly and it moved along at a good pace. I like Dani and enjoyed meeting all of the supporting characters (especially the kitties haha). I look forward to reading more about Dani’s journey learning about her newfound magic and solving more mysteries!

For now, the short story ‘Foresight and the Fateful Ferry’ will have to tide me over until book 2 is released :)

What a delightfully magical mystery. A second chance or a new beginning. A choice of happiness that’s what’s important to know about Dani and this story. It’s a bittersweet mystery as she loses a friend so close after her gran. Yet she gains so much at the same time. I loved the small town and the friends new and old. The kittens were just an absolute joy. A quick yet intricate read and a great beginning to a new series!

This was certainly cozy. I love getting heroines who are older, established women. Dani being 40 when she discovers her family’s secret of witchiness added a really intriguing touch to this mystery.

I thought I knew who had done it, but then of course I was wrong. Definitely not ready to be a crime-solving witch yet, ha. The twists and turns kept me glued to my tablet. I had to know whodunnit.

There were so many layers to each character, particularly Dani, our leading lady. I enjoyed the hint of romance, but I mostly appreciated that romance was nowhere near being in the front of this read. I liked the familial feel of Dani’s friendships, the love and grief she had for her Gran, and the kitten who quickly stole her heart.

I’m eager to read the next installment of Dani’s story!

Potions and the Pleasantly Poisoned is the first book in the ‘A Williams Witch Mystery.’ It stars Dani Williams, a witch, although she doesn’t know it yet. This is told in first person from Dani’s pov.

This is the first time I’ve read a book by this author. I’m usually hesitant to read new-to-me authors, especially in the cozy mystery genre since many aren’t that good. But I enjoyed this story. The blurb does a good job of describing the plot so I won’t go into it much. Dani doesn’t know she’s a witch until she returns to sort out her deceased grandmother’s estate. She finds a note and diary from her grandmother telling her she’s a witch, and explains why she was never told. Now all Dani has are instructions in the diary for all sorts of spells and warnings. Now that Dani’s grandmother has passed, the spell she used to protect Dani from the terrible nightmares she used to have is gone, and now they’ve returned full force.

I liked that Dani wasn’t made out to be just a nosy woman who got involved in police business. She had visions of harm coming to a friend and when that friend died, she wanted to know how the vision could help her figure out what happened because she had ‘feelings’ that told her the death was no accident.

I did wonder about some consistency issues. The most obvious was at the end when the culprit did something to Dani’s car to keep her from escaping. The culprit left Dani for quite a long time and Dani never heard anything from the car alarm before it was disengaged. No beep, no hood slam, no door slam, nothing, and I found that farfetched.

There is one thing the author added at the end of the book. She’d gift a short story bonus book to anyone who joined her email list. There was a link at the end but it didn’t work. I searched the web, and the author has no blog. There’s a Facebook page but it’s not really used. Her amazon page has no email addy to contact the author, just a listing of her books. It sounds like there’s no way to contact the author and she isn’t gifting the short story to anyone. She should remove that info if she’s not going to gift a story.

Overall, I found the plot of ‘Potions and the Pleasantly Poisoned,’ interesting and I liked the main character. I give it, 4 Stars.

Thank you to Eloise Everhart and BookSirens for this free Arc.

Having only read one cozy witch mystery before, the cover for Potions and the Pleasantly Poisoned by Eloise Everhart was what had me picking it up.

✍🏽📖 The Reading Experience

This is a short novel, so I finished it in a few hours, helped by the easy style and fast pacing. The mystery itself was well executed. There were several viable suspects, though I managed to clock who the murderer was early on—a rarity for me! It's a nice, clean read with just a hint of romance.

📚 The Story

The story follows Dani as she comes back to her hometown of Point Pleasant upon her grandmother's death. As if that wasn't bad enough, she's starts having strange visions of a woman collapsed on the ground, apparently dead.

She soon discovers that these visions are actually her magic coming back to her, and that's what she's been seeing was going to happen. Only, it's too late. Now, while coming to grips with the fact that she's a witch, Dani must try to get a handle on her new powers, while simultaneously trying to find the killer.

🪄 The Magic System

The magic was straightforward and fits the genre. Dani's magic is more focused on visions and a magic akin to psychometry (being able to see the memories of an object) there's also there's some beginner-level spells that are perfect for keeping a low profile in a sleepy town.

👥 Characters

There's not much for me to say in terms of the characters, except that Dani is a likable enough protagonist. Her struggles with her visions were compelling, specifically how she pushes them to see what she wants to see, as opposed to what she's allowed to see.

The cover suggests cats are involved, and there are friendly felines, Star and her kittens. However, I was disappointed that they were just normal, friendly cats— nothing actually magical about them.

✔️ Final Thoughts

While I enjoyed the book, it was a little less 'magical' than I was expecting. Hopefully, in the next book there'll be more magic as Dani continues her training. Nonetheless, it's a nice, easy-to-read cozy-witch mystery. 😊

What would you do if you unexpectedly discovered you were a witch? That's the situation Dani Williams faces. She's already dealing with a divorce, lost job, and the death of her beloved grandmother. But, a witch? Seems this was one not so little secret her Gran kept from her. Then, a friend is murdered. One she'd just seen the day before. Even worse, she realizes that the vision she saw while driving there and almost hitting a deer may have foretold the murder. How's that for a burden to carry?

Dani's life has suddenly been turned upside down. She's always had good instincts, insight if you will, but this is way, way beyond that. Fortunately, she's back in a place she's familiar with and has friends, even if, okay, one of them is the top suspect for the murder. She's dealing with organizing her Gran's office with the help of the way pregnant Olivia, and discovers she has skills there that might play into investigating alone, magical or not. Her initial tries of casting spells found in the journal Gran left behind were promising but shows that she still has much, much more to learn. How can Dani navigate this situation alone? How would you handle suddenly elevated senses that allow you to sense everything to a heightened degree? How does one learn to control magic you never knew you had? Maybe more importantly, will it help her avoid danger and to catch a killer? There's already one unsolved mystery in town she knows about. She's already getting threatening notes. Good thing one of her friends is now with the police.

Bottom line, though I'm always wary of books with a paranormal element, this one captured my interest from the beginning. The human element prevails and the characters are likable, even the suspects, and we're exposed to a bit of their backgrounds as the story goes along. There's still lots more to learn, of course, and I look forward to following this series as it grows and develops. What other secrets are hidden away? Thanks #BookSirens for introducing me to Dani and her suddenly magical world. Will that adorable kitten have a role in future books? Oh, I hope so.

First of all, I want to thank the author for offering this advance copy to read.

Dani has had a rough go of it lately, a divorce, becoming a single mother, the recent loss of her grandmother, and now the loss of a woman in the town she grew up in. As Dani is going through her grandmother's things, she finds information that she, like her mother and grandmother before her, is a witch. This information is put on her right before a woman in her town dies, leading Dani down a path to use her newfound magic/skills/knowledge to investigate this murder. Along the way, we find information on Dani's past, and join her on this journey.

At first, I did find some of the sentences lacking what I felt could use more descriptors to create more vivid images in my head, but as I continued I felt as though it gave the story the lighter feel I was hoping for coming off of my last book read, and a lot of room for the author to grow. Once I got to the conclusion of this story, I felt as though I should have realized who it was all along, but didn't! Kudos to the author for that, it was a good twist. More information than I thought I originally needed earlier in the book really ended up being crucial at the end.

Constructively, I would argue that some of the characters seem a little all over the board and we don't get enough backstory on them, and the friendships that were supposed to have been there for a while seemed to really be lacking, seeing as they knew so much about each other, but then at some points didn't know such obvious details about their 'friends' lives.

This story is perfect to curl up with on a lazy rainy afternoon, and I look forward to Dani's next story... I need to know more about this character and I hope the next book can give me some of the back stories that I was so desperately wanting!

Although I did receive this advance copy for free, this review is being left honestly and voluntarily.

An absolutely delightful– or should I say magical?– mystery from the start. Cozy (mystery, fantasy, I’m not picky) is my genre of choice at the moment and this book from Eloise Everhart did not disappoint; I’m absolutely delighted that it’s part of a series AND other books have been written so I won’t have to wait impatiently for the next story.
Dani William’s life is in a bit of a freefall when her grandmother dies, leaving everything to her. Going back to the small coastal town where she spent childhood summers, Dani’s to-do list grows from practical matters like getting the business in order to sell to include a few surprises: namely learning a huge family/personal secret and stumbling into a murder investigation when an old friend is found dead. Without spoiling anything, she is in over her head on a number of fronts but fortunately her inheritance includes a very useful journal left by her grandmother to guide her along the way.
The book was a perfect balance of warm hug and excitement and truly nailed small town life down to the characters (some stereotypes exist for a reason) that exist in every small town I’ve spent any time in, including the one where I grew up, and the degree of familiarity that makes the people almost like family including both the fondness and frustration of knowing everything about each other. The characters were believable and likeable (or love-to-hateable in some cases) and I’m excited to see them develop more in the series. Overall, excellent first book with good room to stretch and grow.

Dani Williams, a 40-year-old insurance adjuster, gets called home to Point Pleasant, Washington, to settle her grandmother’s estate. She thought she knew everything about her grandparents, but what grandma failed to tell her is that she was a witch, and the skills are matrilineal. That means Dani is a witch too. She uses her skills as an adjuster to find the real killer, all while trying to adjust to her supernatural abilities.

I went back and forth on this one. Sure it’s been done before, but Dani does have untypical skills (at least she wasn’t a baker or restaurant owner) and I learned things about insurance adjusting, so I kept going. I decided I liked her attitude and how she didn’t let people push her around. And she mainly relied on her practical skills, using her newfound magical ability as a backup. Plus there’s a cute subplot about rescued kittens, one of whom looks to be a recurrent character.

The story was well-told, and while Dani did take some stupid chances, her heart was in the right place. The ending was way more exciting and action-packed than I thought it would be, and there was a nice hint of romance to come. This was a light, engaging read that I ended up enjoying way more than I anticipated and by the end, I liked the characters enough to keep reading in this series.

This was a “I can’t put this down” book! I was fully engaged in the plot and with the characters. Eloise Eveshart created a sound structure for her plot, which moved apace. Her characters were well formed and believable and I was kept guessing who the murderer was until it was revealed. The relevance of Peter’s disappearance many years’ previously, along with Jessica’s well-kept secret, pulled all the threads together. I loved the paranormal aspect, with Dani discovering she was a witch, and how her growing talents were now emerging, along with her discovery that her grandmother had left more journals for her to discover. This informed me that there will be further stories for me to enjoy! Star and her kittens helped to lighted the mood and I was delighted that Dani adopted Charlie; after all, every witch needs a cat! Although this book can be read as a stand-alone, Dani’s decision to stay in Point Pleasant; the fact that she is looking to start up a business; her burgeoning relationship with Chris and the mystery of what Betty knows about Dani’s “secret”, means there is lots more enjoyment to come. Potions and the Pleasantly Poisoned is a charming and delightfully witchy start to the Williams Witch Mystery series. Eloise Everhart blends small-town intrigue, magical discovery, and a dash of humour into a cozy mystery that’s as comforting as a slice of Gran’s apple pie—if that pie came with a side of murder.

Dani Williams is a wonderfully relatable heroine: forty, freshly heartbroken, and suddenly thrust into a world of spells and secrets she never knew existed. Her journey from grieving granddaughter to amateur sleuth with magical powers is both heartfelt and entertaining. The mystery unfolds with just the right amount of suspense, and the paranormal elements add a whimsical twist without overpowering the emotional core of the story.

Everhart’s writing is warm and engaging, with vivid descriptions of Point Pleasant and a cast of quirky, lovable characters. The pacing is brisk, the plot is clever, and the magical realism is woven in with a light touch that makes the story feel fresh and fun.

If you enjoy cozy mysteries with a supernatural flair, strong female leads, and a touch of family drama, Potions and the Pleasantly Poisoned is a delightful brew you won’t want to miss.

Following the passing of her Grandmother, Dani has returned to Point Pleasant to handle her Grandmother's estate. Although she expects it likely will not be a pleasant trip, her world gets turned upside down first when she discovers she is descended from witches and has recently received her powers and second when her friend is found dead and she finds herself in the middle of the investigation. Can she help find the killer before she becomes a victim herself?

Potions and the Pleasantly Poisoned is a very cute short murder mystery novel. At 166 pages, the plot is well developed and has good pacing. The characters do get introduced quickly and at times I found myself getting the names mixed up.

Although I did identify the killer early, Eloise Everhart, did an excellent job introducing reasonable doubt. It was still a satisfying read and you got to watch Dani start to understand and develop the sight and new spells.

If you're into quick murder mysteries in a small town, it's definitely worth a read.

Thank you to Eloise Everhart and BookSirens for the advance copy.

Potions and the Pleasantly Poisoned by Eloise Everhart was okay. As a cozy mystery, the plotline sounded interesting and I looked forward to reading this book. But once I finished, I felt ... let down by the story itself.

In a 6 month period, Dani lost her husband thru a divorce and her Gran thru death. After temporarily moving to Point Pleasant to settle her grandmother's estate, Dani find a letter and a journal of spells from Gran, learning she, Dani, is a witch! A witch with no training to understand spells, visions, touches, etc.

Right after coming back to Point Pleasant, Jessica, a friend of Dani's, is murdered and Dani feels she must investigate Jessica's death herself, as the sheriff says Jessica's death is an open/shut case.

Dani uses her newfound witchcraft to solve Jessica's death.

The ending felt a bit rushed to me. It also felt like a cliffhanger, at least in regards to Dani's potential love life.

Dani does find a hidden paper in her grandmother's journal saying "1 of 7", so I assume Ms. Evergart has or will be writing at least 6 more books with witch Dani as the main character.

I really enjoyed this book about a 40-something protagonist who goes back to her small home town when her grandmother dies. Dani was a very relatable character, and I enjoyed all the friendships she was able to rekindle when she moved back home. The mystery had me guessing right up until the reveal, and I found it to be a satisfying and surprising outcome.

Dani is older and also seems to be a bit smarter than some other younger protagonists in this genre. She doesn't just go running into trouble herself, and she tells people where she's going to be and what she's doing. Having a support system for the main character is a really appealing aspect of this book.

The book is a standalone mystery, but ends with a teaser of what Dani might get up to in the future. I am excited to continue reading as I really connected with these characters and the setting. Also, having a cat cafe in the story was a wonderful addition! I've enjoyed days spent reading at a cat cafe myself.

Dani Williams has had a rough couple of months. Her marriage is over. Her grandmother died, leaving her a house and a business on Widbey Island. She arrives at her grandparents’ house in a pouring rain to find a bedraggled cat and her kittens waiting for her, along with the shock of a lifetime. Dani is a witch, as her mother was, and her grandmother, and generations of women before her. The knowledge is slightly unnerving, but Dani will eventually figure out how to use her powers, just as she will figure out how to reaclimate to living in a small town. Then her friend Jessica is murdered and Dani decides the police aren’t taking the case seriously. If you are looking for a quick read that doesn’t take itself too seriously, you may have found it. Not only that, this is the first book of Dani Williams’s adventures with her new powers. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

I'd give this 3.5 stars.

As a cozy mystery, Potions and the Pleasantly Poisoned is a quick and easy read, with good world building and a good variation of characters to like - and dislike. Extra points for the adorable kittens being a big part of the story. The enchanting and witchy vibes are less witch-like in the sense of magical powers. For about 80% of the book, it didn't feel like I was reading a story about magic until the last bit where everything truly unfolded in a rapidly pace. That was also the bit that made me sit upright, suddenly there was so much action. So while fast-paced, do keep in mind that it will seem slow due to this.

Despite this, I do feel that the protagonist will delve deeper into her magical abilities and I am looking forward to see how it will unfold in the second book.

Magic and Murder in Seattle

This was a good cozy with a different sort of twist - instead of a nasty person being murdered, it was actually a decent person who was a friend of the “sleuth”.

Dani, the amateur sleuth, is newly divorced, 40, and out of a job. She returns to Point Pleasant, WA to deal with her beloved grandmother’s estate, she starts seeing things and feeling things that don’t make sense. Then she learns that she is a witch and her gran had been suppressing her powers. Now, she not only has to learn how to use her new powers, but also help solve the murder of a good friend. While searching out the perps, she comes to realize that she has more friends there than in Spokane…a great house in her gran’s Victorian home, and the possibility of a job—and a cute cop guy. But someone doesn’t want her there and especially doesn’t want her looking into her friend’s murder. Thankfully, there are others who do want her to stay around.

Starting over after your divorce AND learning you’re a witch? Well that’s one way to put a twist on it.

The book starts out with Dani going home to settle her Grandmother’s estate. Her home, business and the building it is in. She has her list in hand, checking things off as she goes. Her Grandmother’s partner? VERY pregnant and sweet. Dani has already decided to sell her the other half of the business.

Then someone she knows is killed, one of her other friends is brought in for questioning and Dani knows she didn’t do it because of a, dream?

She’s going to use everything she has at her disposal to prove her friend didn’t do it and that includes spells, from her grandmother’s journal.

This is a quick, cozy mystery with an amateur (and witchy) sleuth. It is also the first book in a series. I would like to thank the author and BookSirens for a copy. My review is voluntary and all opinions are my own. Happy reading!

Dani returns home to settle her Grandmother’s estate. She is recently divorced, her daughter will begin uni in the fall and she lost her job as an insurance adjuster over ethics with her boss. Whilst cleaning out her grandmother ´s desk she finds an envelope with a journal and letter to her from her grandmother. It seems the women in the family are witches. She was never told per her mother’s wishes. Then the next day her best friend is found dead in her home, assumed to be from the heart disease that killed her parents young as well. But when Dani goes to the house to Check it out for repairs and condition she gets a feeling that her friend was murdered. An autopsy reveals he locked poisoning and later the police find a tea bag with hemlock. Dani feels the police chief isn’t interested in finding out the truth so she starts nosing around. A good read of this first in series. An interesting town, characters and plot.

Excellent, exciting, and just right!

Immediately the feel is good, the tone is right. Well written, and captivating. Funny thing, I felt a bond with Dani right away, having been a claims adjuster too, although Dani is a field adjuster and I was a desk adjuster. In this job, field or desk, you need empathy, and I felt that from Dani too. I connected! I really felt Dani’s emotions, that was well done. The words flowed easily and gave me that much-needed escape. One little thing: I was disappointed when the cats went to the café, and not home with Dani. I’d’ve liked a bigger role for them. But it ended well! The case was intriguing. The Sheriff, with the election coming up, tries denying the possibility of foul play as long as he can, but even he can’t deny it when evidence comes in. An easy arrest then. So Dani feels the need to step up. Great book!

Potions and the Pleasantly Poisoned is the first book in the Williams Witch Mystery series. The series is off to a great start with Dani back in Point Pleasant. The circumstances aren’t great and her trip to settle her grandmother’s estate takes a turn for the worse with the death of a local woman. Dani also discovers her witchy heritage and is quick to use what she can to help solve the mysterious death. She’s sure it’s not natural but the police don’t seem to agree.

Dani is a wonderful character and I’m glad to have been introduced to her and this new-to-me series. The story was attention-grabbing, and the mystery well thought out. I thought I had everything figured out, but I was wrong. The author did a great job with the twists, turns, and red herrings. I can’t wait to grab the next book.

What an interesting and engaging read!

I’m excited to have discovered this author and this is my first time reading her work. As the opening book in the Williams Witch Mysteries series, it revolves around Dani and her grandmother’s death, and secrets that were kept from her. But there’s more going on in this sleepy little town than Dani expected, and the storyline quickly spins into a page turning “whodunnit” mystery.

Connecting with Dani and her new circumstances was effortless. The characters kept me entertained, and I loved the small town scenarios. It took me a while to figure out who was responsible for what was happening to Jessica and why, but when it finally clicked, I was pleased with the outcome.

I am excited to continue this series and recommend reading in order, as the second book builds on this one.

Dani is 40 and her life seems to be falling apart; divorced, unemployed and her grandmother has just passed away.
Setting off to Point Pleasant to settle her grandmother’s estate, she discovers that she is a witch, her grandmother had blocked her powers. So she works on that as she reconnects with friends from her past summers.
When she’s checking out her possible powers, she has a vision of a friend dying. Turns out it was a true vision and now there is a mystery to solve.
This book is a nice little mystery with a learning witch and interesting characters. It’s not one of the best cozies I have read but I enjoyed it. I think once Dani has a handle on her powers the book will flow better.
A quick, light, fun read.
I read this book as I have an ARC for another book in the series so wanted to get an idea what it was about. It looks like I’ll be reading more of this series.

Book Sires eARC. Dani Wiliams has returned to Point Pleasant to settle her grandmother's estate after her death. Dani was close to her grandmother and thought she knew her family so she is shocked when Gran's letter reveals that she is descended from a long line of witches. Although she has always experienced strange dreams she has no idea how to to proceed or use her gift. When she dreams of a murdered woman she sets out on a mission to uncover the culprit. This was a fast paced, solidly plotted cozy mystery but I was disappointed in the lightness of the witchy element. However this is only the first entry and in the closing chapters Dani discovers the journal she has been using as a resource is one of seven. I found Dani to be an engaging characters and would join her as she seeks to uncover the location of more journals and develop her craft further. A light cozy read.

This was a cozy mystery about a woman who has recently lost her job, her husband, and her daughter is moving off to college. Her gran passes away and she inherits her home and business. She knows the town and her gran's home well because she spent a lot of time there when she was younger so she still has good friends and some acquaintances there. Unfortunately there is a terrible tragedy shortly after she arrives and Dani also finds out from a letter and book left for her by her Gran that their family is witches and have the sight. Dani sets out to learn more and see if it can help her get to the bottom of the terrible murder. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
